Title: Perry plastic pikemen
Post by: Totleben on June 14, 2012, 08:19:25 AM
I am trying to build mercenaries with levelled pikes from spare arms of the perry WotR plastic boxes.

Are there long 1mm gauge pikes from any vendor? Preferably plastic. :)

Warlord GAmes sell packs of 50 pikes, you need to bare in mind though that the pikes your lads are armed with are quite short in comparison to pikes normally used on minis, though a pair of tin snips would cut them down easily to the length you want.

I am sure other companies like Perrys or Foundry will sell the pikes (Gripping Beast may too) but you could use florist wire as an alternative? I did for my ECW armies as pikes were available ready made back in the day :)

The standard steel pikes that are sold by many manufacturers are relatively thin and look different to the plastic ones.
I often use 1.2 mm brass rod which is very similar to plastic pikes in thickness.
I can buy this in the local DIY stores.
I flatten the end slightly with a hammer and grind the end to a point. (But remember to blunt it slightly to avoid injuries).
These are all home made brass pikes.

Nice looking unit there Mick - I especially like the clever use of the double depth bases to accommodate the pikes. Nice idea that works very well.

How about using styrene rod from your local model shop. You can get it thin enough to look like brass rod and all you have to do is taper the ends.

I use it for my ECW pike.

cheers
