Title: MacLAM 2012
Post by: oldskoolrebel on June 16, 2012, 10:47:34 PM
Well that's day 1 of MacLAM finished. Fantastic games played with some really nice people. There seems to be something peculiar about that date (It seems to be living up to name given it by a certain individual, "a fucking catastrophic date"  lol). Several members had to pull out for various reason last minute, and one of the organizers, AndyM, came down with a bug and couldn't make it! It's  like the Bermuda Triangle of the Gaming World!

We had a variety of games on offer today including; VSF, SCI-FI, American Wars of Independence and Pulp. I'd like to thank Kestrel, Gamer Mac and Bill5549 for running games today (especially poor Bill who came all the way from the East Coast to run a game and had to leave after lunch!).

The following is the only picture that I managed to get of the Aquanauts game. As you can see there is much pondering as to what the next move will be.

Meanwhile over in America, my patriots where fighting the British... sorry being slaughtered by the British.

^The very friendly Bill5549, umpiring our game.

^The Finger of Doom (See these guys they're pure mad mental so they are)

^My Right Flank

^And it's great disappearing act!

I'm not really a huge fan of 'big' battles but I thoroughly enjoyed this! Really good fun despite my inability to roll the required numbers. I really like the system (Black Powder? By Warlord Games?). Pretty simple good fun. I loved the command rules; really good fun, despite my army running away most of the time!

Ran my pulp/Cthulhu game. It pitted 4 teams against each other; Germans, Mikatonic University, The Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh and Foo Manchu's dastardly Chinese in a race to find a rare copy of the Necronomicon. The game seen the teams fighting the local militia, skeleton warriors, angry snakes and Archaeologists!

Favourite moments included; Lucas, the German NCO planted dynamite at the gate of the militia compound only to activate an encounter resulting in him being surrounded by beggars, preventing him from moving and being blown apart by his own dynamite. The Incredible, Invincible, Abdul who survived everything that was thrown at him. And finally the Chinese player's inability to roll anything above a four (And blaming it on his orange dice!). As usual I got so caught up in the game that I never took many pictures (in fact only one)

Well here is looking forward for tomorrow; some gaming in space, on a zeppelin and possible fighting werewolves.

Cheers
Andy

HAHAHA!!!

That is a brilliant idea for an encounter! Did you place actual beggars there or just tell the bloke that he was done for?

Wish I was gaming and not sweating the trembling terror over modern physics exam sweat today. Brr!

Nope I was pulled completely randomly from an encounter deck; which only added to the hilarity! Originally the encounter was meant to be nothing more and an annoyance; you lose your next turn, but cannot be targeted because of the mass of bodies etc. However I ruled that the soft fleshy bodies where little protection from an explosion!

Ooooh Modern Physics you say? Best of luck!

It is looking like you guys are having a great time.
All the games look superb and you have pulled it all together really well.
Well done!

All the best for the rest of the weekend and I am sure that, like me, everyone is waiting for the rest of the pictures with great anticipation... ;D

Was looking forward to giving Nemo an outing again.  >:D

Seems you had tones of fun!!

By the way what ruleset did you use for the pulp scenario? Did you use made up rules?

There seems to be something peculiar about that date (It seems to be living up to name given it by a certain individual, "a fucking catastrophic date"  lol).

I being more diplomatic suggested, "The Scottish LAM"

This is very nice looking. Every country should have a LAM !

Well I for one am waiting for Canada to hold a CLAM - I might not be able to make it, but I just like the name. lol

I'd just like to say a big thank you to Andy and Andy, I mean Colin for running this weekend and making the coach trip up from Bristol so worthwhile.

As to games, what can I say other than I've played the Aquanaughts game before, but I'd forgotten just how impressive it was in person - Plus, thanks to some judicious alliances with a son against his own father and a few lucky dice, I managed to pull off a win for the Barracudas - So to those that said the Barracudas could never win, I say you've not been sneaky enough! lol

I missed some of the excitement at the Egyptian table, but could tell they were having fun, plus it was fun coming over towards the end of the game and by helping run NPCs ruin the Germans' chances of winning the game, when it looked like they might run away with the game.

It was good to see the Zeppelin again today and with the game opening with one of the Americans sneaking up a ladder behind a sentry and throwing him out a nearby window with a cry of 'No ticket', will tell you just how Pulp it was. Whilst we Robbie's Rangers may have stopped the nefarious scheme of dropping a bomb in New York, sadly the zeppelin was crashed into the Empire State Building and the current whereabouts of Robbie and his Rangers is unknown.

I've run games on both days and I've been pleased to see that space dogfighting has proved popular. On Saturday I ran a couple of one on one games, but today it was Cylons vs Humans - Whilst the humans started well and dropped one raider at the end of the hour we had the dramatic finish of two vipers being destroyed and the third firmly in the sight of all three Cylon raiders.

I also ran a 4+ and Fudges game, which proved a little more competitive and whilst technically all sides could win it ended with a convincing win for one of the marquis forces who not only retrieved numerous resources, also found a crate marked 'TANKS' which actually had the Imperial Empire's secret doomsday weapon concealed within it.

Such a convincing victory not only allowed him to unite the planet behind him (and beating his main opponent another marquis leader in a race for resources), but allowed his planet to force the Empire and Republic to fight their galactic war elsewhere.

All in all I'd have to say I've had a great time and I'm looking forward to seeing what pulpy goodness tomorrow brings - If I had one complaint though it would be that I have done a lot less drinking than I would have expected hanging about with Glaswegians. lol

By the way what ruleset did you use for the pulp scenario? Did you use made up rules?

The rules where a homebrew system, very similar to the goal system but sufficiently different. To be honest I love .45, it's great for pulp gaming with my regulars but in my opinion it's a poor choice for convention gaming. When I get this system (cunningly entitled 'my pulp system) fine tuned I'll be using it for all my convention pulp gaming.

... coincidently I also have a system that seems to work for gothic horror that is loosely based on savage worlds, but is quite different from my Pulp system.

MacLAM, eh?

And not a kilt in sight.  >:(

 ;)

I'll wear one next year if it gets more people to attend. I've been told that I have nice legs for a kilt... lol

Day 2

Sadly we were down on numbers, and still no sign of poor AndyM. However as a consolation prize Mrs Gamer Mac made us some very nice cakes; Thanks again Mrs Mac!

^ Shortbread, Scones and cake! Oh how we were spoilt!

And for those of you who are interested; my MacLAM display board. It did get abandoned today, since we all knew what was on as only one game at a time was ran.

The first game of the day, seen Robbie's Sky rangers attempting to stop a German Zeppelin from dropping it's payload over Now York. I dutifully assisted Gamer Mac in running the Germans. Kestrel's report above is pretty concise.

^Yup thats right; it's a zeppelin made out of cheese! Well not quite. The cheese wheel is actually a template of the gas bag to show LOS. (Who's got the crackers?)

After storming on board the Zeppelin, Robbie's Rangers discover a British dignity who needs protecting.

The brave Jamie takes on the entire German bridge crew single handedly

Metalface arrives onboard via jet pack. Tis time for the players to squirm!

Our next game was Kestrel's excellent Frak all toasters, dog fighting in space. I'm not going to lie I never thought that I'd fancy this one, but boy was I surprised. A fantastic little system, a real gem. I'd happily play this one again!

Well tomorrow is going to be Pulp Monday with a few linked scenarios following the commandos in an attempt to prevent the Germans from developing a new 'super' weapon.

Again I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'd just like to thank everyone for attending.

Cheers
Andy

Concise it may have been but, I realised immediately after posting that I missed out loads of other cool moments, like one of the Rangers grabbing a jet pack and attempting to go outside and fly round to the front of the zeppelin and force the pilot to stop at gunpoint.  lol

Me to. The trips I have done so far to *LAMs have always topped my already high expectations. Logistics from an island in the Baltic and when small off-spring are involved are difficult factors, but if you plan for another one it is a destination VERY high on my list.

Time for my photos.
We had a very good time over the weekend and played some fun games.
Thanks for everyone who turned up to add to the fun. Thanks to oldschoolrebel for doing most of the organising.

First off some pictures to prove that it doesn't always rain in Scotland. They were taken today right enough and it was pissing down the other two days :D

Well I'm home now, so I'll see what's on the camera - Might take a while though as I promised Oldskoolrebel the first of two MacLAM battle reports would be put up today, should be plenty of pictures with that though.

Once again I'd just like to thank Oldskoolrebel for making me feel so welcome in Scotland and gamer Mac for his patience with me, as I appeared to be unable to get his name right for the entire weekend. ::)

As a bonus for me I was wondering how the dogfighting game I brought would go over and judging by the response I'll be bringing a version of it to BLAM for people to play.

Blimey. Well that has to be the best view from a LAM yet!

Like so many others, I'm really sorry I couldn't join you. I love Scotland, and it's no great trek from London really. But alas, coming just a month after the long weekend of the GLAM in Kiel, there's no way I was going to be able to get a second three-day again pass so soon. But yes, I really hope that with a different slot in the schedule I'll be able to join you next time. I do love a good LAM!

Really hope you didn't catch a cold on the costs with a lower than expected turnout, and that this gives you the experience you need to go on and run an even bigger and better event next time :)

I  love Scotland

Can we get t-shirt of this made  lol just kidding!

I'm going to be honest from a personal point I felt this too- i'd have loved to have made it to Kiel but there was no way this year, both financially and in terms of passes. Also if I'm going to be honest work wise the MacLAM date is smack bang in the middle of my busy season, so I'd love to move it too.

The cost was reduced for us by the park. They know my face because I do quite a bit of work there and often use their venue for running first aid course etc. They cut the costs really low because we had fewer people than expected. Fantastic of them, but probably something that can happen only the once. Hopefully next year that wont be an issue.

Cheers again

Andy

Our first game of the weekend was the Aqua-naught game.
This is basically a free for all. Each person controls a single sub or in one case a pair of smaller subs.
We had five players.
The subs used were
The Squid - David
The Prussian Whale - growlergods son
Nemo’s Crab walker - Barry
The turtle - growlergod
And the pair of Barracudas - Kestrel
The first picture shows the “turning into the torpedo” tactic that surprisingly seem to work on both occasions that it was used. :o :o :o

The poor squid sub got sandwiched between the crab and the turtle and got pinched/crushed into little bits. But David the commander of the sub managed to patch enough of the sub together with his last minute repair rolls to keep it afloat for about five turns after it should have been done for.

The barracudas were being really sneaky and kept out of the main fight until the end.
The whale has just fired both its torps at the Turtle. This was a son picking on a father, talk about a grudge match
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/10/1912_19_06_12_12_24_35.JPG)

The grudge match continues as the subs clash. The Squid is now bits of floatsam. Along with one of the Barracudas by this time.

Another view of the same clash. With the crab rushing to join in the mayhem.

Surrounded and not so lucky with repair roles. The turtle in wrecked.

The final battle. With surprisingly, the small Barracuda being the sole(Pun intended) survivor. As the other two sub commanders were basically crap (or should that be carp) at repair rolls
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/10/1912_19_06_12_12_43_30.JPG)

More pics to follow soon

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the games on saturday, lots of fun. Shame I couldn't make it to the Sunday games but I was slightly hung over from my friends birthday night out  :)

Great to see loads of pictures but none of the legend that is the "Immortal Abdul" gotta say, something wrong there lol.

As the relative noob & zeppelin ticket inspector attending the event I'd like to thank oldskoolrebel, gamer Mac & Kestrel for making me feel very welcome and introducing me to some fun new games.

I had an absolute blast guys and don't think I thanked you enough over the weekend!  Fingers crossed the numbers are up for next year but I'll be doing everything I can to make sure I'll be there!

Dave

Glad you enjoyed it Dave, thanks for showing such enjoyment while you were there.

Be warned though, that I'm going to practice my piloting skills for next year and I won't be such an easy target for you next year.  8) - That's right I've put on my Aviators to show I'm serious about being Top Gun. lol

Some more pictures

Next up was oldschoolrebels pulp game. A very nice set up.

I was controlling the Germans

The nice little forge was the starting point for the fez wearing cultists

My officer managed to get the first book, not the one we were after but I tried a bit of sneaky deception and headed to the exit point to draw the enemy teams away from the real objective. It worked because the Chinese turned round and then spent most of the game in a fire fight in that one area

The funniest moment of the game. My NCO was after the real book, we believed was in the police office. He decided to use his dynamite to take out the gate and some of the militia into the bargain. But after setting the explosives and trying to do a runner got mobbed by a bunch of beggars and couldn’t get far enough away from the explosion. Even with the “beggar” body armour my NCO was splattered all over the street. But managed to take out the door and a couple of guards

More tomorrow

No haggis. Tappas the first night and Sunday roast the second.  I am sure we could arrange haggis for next year. If you look closely at the second and third pictures above you can see the little Gits running rou ;D

A picture of Abdul the invincible. A low level character who seem to have a charmed life. Under a hail of fire with not a scratch

Police captain's office containing the thrid book. My officer tried to take him on but failed.

Other pictures of the action at the other side of the table.
I was left with one low grade rifleman who got killed in the final round trying to run off with the main objective book.

Some excellent looking games, I must say.

OTOH, no kilts, no haggis, no blue painted faces...  :-[

 ;)

Yes believe it or not we don't all go around in kilts, snacking on haggis. And the blue paint on the face is tough on the fair skin :D

Next game up is our zeppelin game.

The game set up. The red counters are sentries. The white counters are encounter markers.
There were four players, each had a grade 3 and a grade 1, all members of Robbies sky rangers.
Each player had to roll a dice for a random  starting point.
The story is that the rangers have a time limit to stop the Zeppelin from dropping a huge big bomb on New York. Each team lands a small plane on top of the zeppelin and then abseils down into one of the entry points.

One of the first players into the zeppelin crashes through one of the bedroom windows and surprises a lady passenger getting dressed in her room. The lady attacks with her handbag but misses. I was then expecting the player to hit her back or try and force his way though but instead he grabbed her and gave her a kiss

The cheese as it has been named is used to represent the gas bags within the zeppelin, for checking line of sight.

One of the game objectives was to take control of the bridge but the corridor is a good bottle neck for the defender.

One of the encounter markers was a British diplomat who had to be protected. The room they picked to keep him safe had a guard.

The other objective of the game was to drop the bomb into the sea. The controls were in this room, which lead to a big fight in here

The players managed to drop the bomb into the ocean two turns before reaching New York.

Hi manic _miner. My name is Adam. Going to be using the sea demons along with crooked dices' crab men to make a Blood bowl team.
It's basically going to be a lizardman team with the crabs being saurus and the sea demons being my skink runners.

I'll drop you a pm when I finally bring out the hairy sticks and slap some paint on them.
