Title: Woodland Indian skin colour?
Post by: Mindenbrush on June 18, 2012, 12:43:40 PM
With the introduction of Muskets and Tomahawks reviving my interest in the F&IW with the added bonus of the AWI and War of 1812, I started looking back through all the lists of flesh recipes that I had saved over the years to see which one I liked for Woodland Indians.

I though Tom Weiss's figures looked good and I believe his colours were based on his Caucasian flesh recipe and omitting any further highlights after the 2nd.
Base coat = P Red-Brown
Main colour = Dwarf Flesh (GW or VGC) + VMC Dark Flesh + a little bit of P Red-Brown.
1st highlight = VMC Flat Flesh + a bit of Dwarf Flesh (GW or VGC).
2nd highlight = 1st highlight + small amount of White (VGC)
For further highlights add extra white to the mix.

I have also seen many others such as Captain Blood's which to me seem 'browner' rather than 'red' (I understand 'red' is a bit of a missconception).

I started 1 figure last night as a test using Plaka Red-Brown Base, then the Foundry Woodland Indian Triad but it looked too 'red' so I added thinned down some Foundry Chestnut C and a final highlight of thinned F.Chestnut C and VMC Ivory.
The figure looks better but I am still not sure, any suggestions?

Looks like a bit more in depth searching has solved my problem.

Tom Weiss's method is good and there is also:

Base GW or VGC Beast Brown, 2:1 mix of Beast Brown and GW/VGC Bronzed Flesh, 1:1 mix of previous, 1:1:1 mix of the previous plus ivory.

Variation of above - Base of GW Beast Brown (or it's VGC equivalent) followed by a 2:1 mix of the beast brown and dwarf flesh (I now use VMC red beige instead of the Dwarf Flesh). Then a 1:1 mix of the same followed by 1:1:1,  the same plus ivory just for final highlights.

Model color 940 saddle brown,Model color 818 red leather , Model color 981 orange brown , Game color bone mix.

Thanks Lance, appreciated and will add the recipes into the Painting Sticky on Steve Dean's Forum.

I contacted your USA outlet, seems they will not be at Historicon but do they have stock yet?
