Title: Italian Colonial Troops question
Post by: Corporal Wissman on July 01, 2012, 03:43:39 PM
I don't know much about Italian colonial troops so I was wondering if someone could help me identify what these units are.  ???
I'm pretty sure that the cavalry trooper is not a Spahi as the Italians formed those post 1910 and this illustration is dated 1896.
The infantryman in white may well be an askari but I don't know who the chaps in blue are

The infantrymen are Bashi Buzuk, first organization of local troops, not askaris. Askaris were first organized in 1888. The far right infantry is a soldier of Bande Armate, like local militia.
For the horseman I try to let you know something soon.
The soldiers depicted are not referring to 1896, in that date there was the battle of Adowa, and the dress and equipment were completely different.

Thanks for the reply :)
I wasn't aware of the bashi-buzuks and I thought it was in 1896 because that is the date indicated
Many thanks again

Nice pictures,  :D
Thanks very much

Stuart

The cavalryman on the illustration is not an askari cavalryman then, it'd be nice if someone could identify him.

Stuart,
considering the period of the illustration around 1880-85, I presume could be a local cavalryman of some Sultanate.
do you know the name of the artist ?

Ok, I am afraid I don't know who the artist is as the illustration is from an internet archive of different collections

The cavalry in question is the Eritrean hawk cavalry technically Askari. they had six squadrons and are made in 28mm by castaway arts.
