I don't know if this is the right board to post this on or if The Wickerman can be classed as a horror film? There's not really much in the way of blood and guts!
I was asked recently if I could make a model of the wickerman pyre that's in the dramatic scene at the end of the film. I could only think of two ways to try and make one and I didn't fancy learning how to weave! ;) The only way I could think of doing it was to make a foam former, stick on lines of solder wire to follow the contours of the statue and act as the cane frame, and then cover it in green stuff which is score to look like bundles of wicker woven into the canes.
Here's the one from the film...
Here's the ideas I had for my own version. I think I'll just stick as close to the original as I can.
....and here's where I've got so far....
This is blue foam cover in red clay to make it harder, solder 'canes' on top and green stuff for the wicker.
...and about 3/4 completed body...
I'm going to sit it on a plinth type stone base with steps on. There's going to be a cage in the centre of the chest, I'll make the frame/bars for it separate. The cage will fit a standard based 28mm figure.
Hope you likey!
-
That looks great mate :-* :-*
How much 'green stuff' have you used lol
Are you going to sculpt the head mask as well?
cheers
James
-
Great idea mate! Looks Brill look forward to seeing this finished ;)
-
Wonderful looking piece, that will make a superb centerpiece to a gaming table. Are you making it as a master for casting or a "one off"?
-
very good start... is this for casting?
two points though - of course the Wicker Man is a horror film and that picture is from the abortion of a remake which is barely even a film... lol

-
Nice ;)
-
Wonderful stuff Andy.
-
Fantastic!
-
Another great build you talented bugger but you must be raving bonkers to use that much greenstuff. 'tis not the cheap option.
-
Please take photos when you set it alight,.
And...

-
Very cool. And usable for many different time periods. I was just reading a Slaine comic with a Wickerman.
-
What a great project, Andym: I'm really looking forward to seeing how this works out.
(Oh, and I don't think that "horror" means the same as "splatter": some of the best horror movies don't have much, if anything, by way of blood and guts: see, for example, Robert Wise's The Haunting, James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein or even Hitchcock's Psycho.)
-
Very cool!
-
Saw a film with that statue, quite a weird film but it's ages ago when I saw him. But I think I can remember that some sort of cop was sent to an island to investigate something and there was some folklore dancing involved. Can be totally wrong of course lol
-
Very nice work Andym.
The sculpted thatching is incredible! :-*

that occured to me a while ago when I was watching In The Mouth of Madness... horror has given way to splatter and gore nowadays

On the off chance that Belgian isn't joking:

Thanks guys!
Hopefully, all going well, this will be cast when it's done. I'm not actually using THAT much green stuff, it's only a top layer. I got 36inches worth of the stuff for £8 off of eBay and I've only used about 8inches of it so far!
Dr The Viking-that Iron Maiden poster looks great! I might see if I can have a wee added extra for my client by making that face! That's cool! I might try an extra mask as well, but I'll see how I get on.
Just on a side note, I see it's on ITV4 tonight at 9 if you live in Britain( .....and don't worry EG it's the original one! ;))
-
Great stuff! Wouldn't it have been easier just to make it out of wicker?
-
Sigh!
-

110% Agree - They rarely make Horror Movies anymore, just gore and splatter movies.
-
Interestingly, Edward Woodward's is the only performance I've seen; have Nicolas Cage on disc somewhere, but not spun it up yet.
We older, parochial Yanks tend to think of Mr. Woodward as 'The Equalizer'.
All that 'wicker' out of eight inches of ribbon? Outstanding! However, stretched that thin, and I can suppress my worries about top-heaviness.
Now, you need a Christopher Lee fig, and, of course, a dancing Britt Eklund... lol
Doug
PS I actually like a bit of splatter and gore, but even that can be 'ruined' in the wrong hands, and most are, you know.
-
This is really looking brilliant so far, I'll be following this with interest. This would be a great piece to cast in rigid foam with resin details.
There was something in the Warhammer backstory about how Nurgle worshippers used wickermen in their sacrifices and how Papa Nurgle resembled one. I've always imagined one with arms and heads sticking out like the sacrifices were prisoners in a cage. Maybe I shouldn't be imagining stuff like that. Maybe I need to listen to less Iron Maiden...
-
very impressive :)
-
That's really quite amazing!
Now who makes a 28mm Edward Woodward?
-
Great stuff! Wouldn't it have been easier just to make it out of wicker?
I don't think the feel/scale of the wicker would have felt quite right and also it would be a bugger to cast!!
I've maaaayyyybbee gone a wee bit off track here, but that picture of the Iron Maiden Wickerman that Dr The Viking posted is cool!
I'll make this an alternative head and if my client wants it, he's more than welcome to it.
Thanks for the encouraging comments guys!
-
OH!
I'm always glad to be of service. Viking Derailing Inc.
...and now I'm hoping it be cast?
-
You genius!
-

Doug
I'm making up a base to put it on. This is only a start. My plan is to make a kind of pyre to surround the stone base and steps leading up to the statue.
P.S. The base will hopefully look a lot better when it's finished!!!
-
(http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv179/andym2105/c77470dc.jpg)
EDDIE!!!!
When it's cast and for sale I'll get one off you for my mate at work (we're big Maiden fans and try to go to their concerts whenever they play in England. He likes his horror films as well :D ).
Great work Andy you talented so and so ;D
cheers
James

Ooh, is this for casting and (with luck) sale, then?
Now who makes a 28mm Edward Woodward?
A Killer B "Geezers!" policeman, perhaps? Not very nice minis, though.
We older, parochial Yanks tend to think of Mr. Woodward as 'The Equalizer'.
I'd have expected that wargamers, of any age and nationality, would think first of Callan.
-
Andy, I bow before your talent :)
-

Personally I always recall the awful joke about no "d"s ::)
-
I'd have expected that wargamers, of any age and nationality, would think first of Callan.
Oddly enough, when I think of wargamers, it's the Lonely character in Callan that first comes to mind. lol

Well, Proust always maintained that the sense of smell was the most evocative.

Don't think it got play in the US. At least, I don't recall it, and the whole Danger Man/John Le Carre mash up seems like something I'd wish for. I followed McGoohan through DM (SA) to The Prisoner, gladly, and rather a Alec Guinness' George Smiley fan, though I've not seen the most recent incarnation.
The Equalizer, on the other hand was rather a hit for at least a year or two. (Quick look at IMDB) Four seasons broadcast suggests that.
Listen, even if the Wickerman is restricted to just the commission, which I'd understand, as the Eddie head seems a side project,
I'd be hoping that might be available!
Well, Proust always maintained that the sense of smell was the most evocative.
Oh, boo!

Ah, well if you do catch up with the feature film of Callan, or the pilot episode "A Magnum for Schneider", on which it is based, you'll find that our assassin anti-hero uses wargaming as a means to get near to his victim: they play a Napoleonics game, and then a refight of Gettysburg.
Bob Cordery's blog has images of both games:

Andym, still there? Are we fruitlessly hoping for our own wickerman, or parts thereof?
SteveF: Didn't the movie Ronin kick off a whole 'tabletop within a film' discussion? I would have put up a few episodes of The Avengers as near misses.

Missed that one; reminds me a bit of the scene from the movie Great Catherine, though I never was the fan of Jeanne Moreau.

Really beautiful work! Richard

I'll do my best! ;)
I redone a wee bit of the head and added on more of a neck. I wasn't happy how it sat.....
I've also done a bit to the normal head. I'll sculpt a cage door in the centre. One that can't be opened on the model!
The body is also been elongated and I've started a cage in the bottom part of that too.
Cheers for the comments guys!!
-
And he's back!!!
;D ;D
:-*
OK I can't even spot the change in what you've done, but I love it all the same.

Doing well indeed!
I was fine with the first version, though hard to tell without more shots from other angles. You are probably correct for a wickerman, though. Standing proud, and all that.
Cheers for the comments guys!!
Good gosh, those that can, do, those that can't, put on these silly little skirts and shake pompoms.
And if that isn't a disturbing image, I don't know what is! lol
Doug

You Sir, are a busy genius! Love it!

It was green last time!!! ;) :D

Very good model, I like the wicker effect your getting using green stuff but that was never possible with what I had in mind last year after making my Stonehenge but I got waylaid then in April Uncle Mike made a commit on his forum so I went ahead and made it have finished it just painting it up now.
Should be on my Blog next week

Cool!! Post us up the finished article when your done! I'd love to see the results!

Fantastic!!!
-
I could easily see myself painting up one of those in a lava scheme and have as an end of level monster in a pulp game :-*
-
This just improves all the time!
I'd love to use the eddie head on it. Not quite sure what game I'd use it in... But I'm sure I could come up with something :-)
Cheers

I'd love your opinions guys!

Andym your wickerman is coming along nicely. It looks great. :-*
jnr, your wickerman looks good too. It's hard to believe it foam carved!

The original Wicker Man film is one of my favourites and both projects featured in this thread are a great homage to the film.

I like the one by jnr as well.

Any news on a release of Eddie the Wickerman?!
-
I've been working on it recently bud. I didn't think it looked too different from the last pics so I've not added an update yet...

I need to change the body where it joins the arm. It needs to be bulked out a little to make it a seamless join.
-
This is still one of the coolest pieces I've seen. Finish it! Finish it! :D
-
Actually, I can see a difference. Not sure a third of year's worth... lol
Of course, I TEASE!
Just, do toss a crumb or two, now and then.
Thanks!
Doug

I'm nearing the end of this, but I'm not quite happy how certain parts are working out!! :-[ It's the doors, I'm not sure wither they should be smaller or a different design or something.... ???

Should the door fit inside the opening in the chest? Should I redo it different somehow? Any help would be appreciated!!
Cheers!
Andy
-
Not much in the way of advice I'm afraid mate but it does need to be a lot slimmer, I think a re-sculpt could be in order.
How about just using fuse wire for the door?
cheers
James
-
How about just using fuse wire for the door?
Perhaps solid wicker at the bottom, wire cage at top. If on the outside, needs to look really strongly attached. Not really a volunteer resident, mind you.
Doug
-
Can't you make a version with a sort of platform with rails and some levers so you could put a mahmoud there controlling an alive version of the wicker monster?!?!?
-
You could inset it and maybe make the bars thinner - largely from wire with a bit of gs?
-

Diffinatetly a re-sculpt then!

I could maybe just do a set of wooden bars, no wicker.....

Do you not think your a bad influence enough!?!? ;) Don't worry it's in the pipeline. I was thinking of a balcony with some sort of control panel with wooden/crystal joysticks at the front!
Thanks for the help guys!!
-
After looking at the face of this awesome creation, I have to ask, are you an Iron Maiden fan? :D
-
That's was Mr Dr the Viking's suggestion! ;)
Right, my solution to my wee problem. Would wooden bars look good enough? I've made the shape of them out of plastic rod, slightly bent at point to make them look irregular....
...then cover it with thin Green Stuff to make the bars look like wood(still WIP)...

Damn, where's the Like button? Oh, wait, this is as social a media as I do, so what do I know about Like?
;)
Works for moi...
Doug
-
Thanks Beast!
I've being trying to do wee bits of this through my lunch breaks when I get a chance. The doors ain't really worth showing, but I've started a mask for the basic wicker head to bring it more in line with the traditional 'Green Man'...

Cheers guys! I'm nearly finished this, the only thing I'm still struggling with is I've been asked by a couple of people to do controls, as if its some sort of fantasy walker, but I can't seem to come up with a decent design!! :-[ It has to be something to fit in the chest space! I was thinking of some sort of balcony with a control panel?

I've still to add wee bits to the 'Green Man' head.
-
Just do something like a plasma ball but a bit more fantasy looking, as it is fantasy, it can be powered any way you damn well please :D
cheers
James
-
That is a cool toy!
-
The faces are great but something is not right with the arms, they look a bit short.
-
For controls it would be neat to have a replacement hand holding a miniature version of the wickerman, along the lines of a voodo doll. Even better if it was on a robed cultist wearing a mask to match the green man face :)
-
Many pages ago you put a picture of a base you were making... Any chance of a peek at the model on that?
It is a lovely rendition of a wicker man. :-*
-

I don't know if I can change that at such a late stage Colin! The tops of the arms are a moulded fit at the arm pit area, if I put an extended section in there, the insides of the arm will look funny! :-[

The more I thought about the base the more I didn't like it. If it was cast it would be a BIG heavy chunk of resin!
Thanks for all the helpful comments guys!!

How long before we can buy a casting? This would be perfect for my current project.

o_o Saw this at claymore on saturday and was very impressed but yours is way to hot to handle, love the fire effect :-*
-
Wow, that's brilliant. The heat effect looks very real
-
The fire effect is gorgeous! I may need to get one of these as a center piece for my witches coven.
-
The glow! The infernal glow! :o
Heck with falling behind on finishing projects; this monster is part of me falling behind on purchases! >:(

Very nice fire effect on that. Well done. That would look so great looming above trees in a gaming board.
(Makes me remember Space Quest 3 on the purple planet with the giant robot monster when you see it in the distance for some reason, well no other reason than it is big.)
-
That paintwork really makes him shine! not just the glow (which is GREAT), but the actual wicker colours too!
-
now I know why I don't paint! inbetween you and Dags, im not worthy.

Sounds like you don't troll this place enough; my list of despised competence is long and honorable.

Thanks gents! Well that's him finished! I made a base out of bits of blue foam and plastic card. The stuff that's supposed to hay is cheap house hold paint brush bristles.

Saw the big bugger on the Ainsty stall at Britcon. Great model and you've done a great job of painting him.
