Title: Dux Britanniarum Publication Date Announced
Post by: Lardy Rich on July 05, 2012, 12:06:17 PM
Hi all,

I've been a bit quiet lately and not posted any Dux Britanniarum game reports.  The reason is that we have been up to our eyeballs getting to rules ready for publication.  Well, I am now very happy to announce that the rules will be published on the 30th of July.

We are just sorting out details of pricing and so on, the main rule book in hard copy which contains the whole campaign system and the tabletop rules will be around 86 pages with a really nice seperate A3 map of Britain in around 450, the starting point of the rules.  That will retail for just £20.  We are also producing a really nice 64 card deck which incorporates both the decks you'll need to play the game, the Game Deck and the Fate Deck, and we'll be doing the rules in interactive tablet format as well as plain PDF.  I need to get all the pricing sorted out there but you can rest assured we'll be doing some great value bundles and some even better deals for advanced orders.  More on that soon.

In the meantime, here's a picture of the cover to whet your appetite.

You can read a bit more on Lard Island News if you like, Nick has just run an interview with me that he did the other day.  It's here:

After listening to the latest Meeples & Miniatures podcast I would claim these rules for the Ancients subforum. :D
Looking really forward to its arrival, please keep us up to date.

What a shame that the Ancients board ends with the 'Fall' of the Roman Empire, which puts these firmly into the Medieval era.  :D

Not that it really matters either way.

This! I'm even back to lurking around TMP to see if it is out yet! Reminds me of peeking downstairs at 4AM to see if Santa came...

So, is it out yet? ::)

Hello Chaps

You can now place an advanced order for the hard copy or the bundle with the rules and the cards (which I think is the best value).  We DO indeed have a limited edition Arthur, 800 of them to be precise, and we are nearly half way through them already so now is the time to order if you want the man himself.  You can read about the advanced order deals here:

http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/

The cards are really nice, we used them in anger for a game last night for the first time and they really add something to the game in terms of the presentation.

Cheers

Richard

'Warbases' in the UK do Dux Britannarum movement trays with circular holes but they will also do custom made ones with 20mm square holes if you email them and ask personally, so, as I still play lots of Age of Arthur WAB, I need not rebase my models. Very useful that!!

Needless to say, I have ordered the rulebook bundle and have also planned my first game early in August to try it out...  Can't wait!!! :D

I get mine from LITKO, but same idea! I've never been thrilled w/ the squares, and the loose rank mov't trays that fit fender washers are just perfect!

Great news - I can't face rebasing all my WAB minis, especially as I might actually want to use them for that again anyway!

Everyone's a winner!

Just to let you all know that you can now pre-order the electronic version of the rules with a hard copy card set at a discount rate of £18 for advanced orders.  That's either the tablet version or the PDF.  We'll also have a low ink pdf for people who want to save a few bob on printer ink.

Torremolinos?
Sorry, don't get the pun. :-I
However, having just re-watched the video introduction to Sharp Practice I would love to see this continued for Dux Britanniarum. The series greatly helped me (being obviously a somewhat dense non-native speaker :'( ) getting the idea of the game in the first place and now preparing myself to teach it to other people.

Hello chaps

Yes, we still have a few Arthurs left, about 50 to 100 I think, so you definitely got one.

Sorry Doc Morris.  Toremolinos is a popular tourist destination for Brits going to Spain. You could easily convert the campain to the area around Mainz where Rome meets the German tribes.

I see. lol
I'm in the process of collecting maps and other reference materials to match DB's campaign requirements. Maybe I'll go the other way around and attribute the invasion part to the Romans…

I've received my pdf of the rules and I must say I'm really impressed with what's gone into these... far more than I expected and a complete campaign package to boot. I've yet to fully read through them, but from what I've seen so far... it's a winner!

Any reviews on number of figures etc?

I would think that the basic concept would work for virtually any heroic warfare based setting, anything which has the possibility of individuals carving out their own kingdom at the expense of someone else really. So mythic Ireland, Dark Ages Greece, Bronze Age Britain, whatever your mind can stretch it to.

Figure-wise you're talking a leader, 2 sub-leaders and a champion. 12 'elites', 18 warriors and 4 skirmishers, or 6 'elites', 12 warriors, 18 levy and 4 skirmishers. Forces increase in size gradually over time, so initial outlay is relatively low.

You can just play the game as a battle, but with all the additional rules, the degree of immersion possible is quite high. I'm really impressed with them, as you might be able to tell.

 ;)

My GB Arthurians and Musketeer Saxons are the mainstays of my collection. They have weathered many a "gosh, I need to pay for 'x'" storm, and I'm glad I held out!
The amazing thing is the fact that they are nearly all painted! My prep for my first game of Dux Brit will consist of picking the minis out of the ranks. A very nice change of pace there... ::)

For long I thought that IABSM couldn't be bettered. That ruleset really opened up a whole new world to me.
I stand corrected now. An yes, I'm biased as well as this has been my favourite era for nearly 30 years, even when Late Romans and Arthurians simply weren't available.
I've read the pdf all day and felt happier than I've been for long, long time even with a 39 degree fever and shaky legs. One of these days the hardcopy will arrive together with the cards Mine and 3 other clubmembers ( although at least another two bough them as well) and then we're set for years ogf gaming.
Don't mind the many typo's It's the medication kicking in at 3.50 AM lol

Hi lads

The bit I hate about producing rules is the time from when I approve the printer's proofs to when people get the rules.  I spend weeks absolutely wracked by self-doubt, could I have done anything better and all that stuff.  So many thanks to everyone who has said they like the visual aspect of them at least.  I hope the tabletop rules are simple enough to allow fast paced games, but that the card system and the contrast between the Saxons and the British gives lots to keep you interested.

We actually continued our campaign last night at the cluub with two really fast and frantic games.  I hope you all have as much fun with them as we have.

Rich

PS  Never sell your figures, you know what will happen.
PPS  Willie, your stuff went yesterday morning.  I hope you feel better soon!

Ok rolled my Saxons up and  Leader and nobles.
So the first will be Modig the just, at the age of 29, he is known far and wide for being Tall and strong with the constitution of a Bull! He was born to greatness in the Hall of King Osric! (Made up name) So the blood of Gods and kings flows in his veins!  So favored by the Woden is he, that he has amassed a raiders hoard and a few ships so as to transport any and all men who are brave and loyal to the land of the week and decadent Romans and Celts of the Isles of briton!

Suporting his actions in battle is Aldhelm the Silent, He is of the same age and build of Modig, they are so alike in apprance that one would be forgive for thinking of them as brothers, but were as Modig is stout as an old oak, Aldhelm a renound athlete who can out jump and out run any man in the Band.

And in the Vain leading with With the vigor and Athletic prows of a young proven warrior of 19. Sighard was one of the first to join Modigs band in Britain and hopes to gain great wealth and glory in the service of Modig.

I think I rolled pretty good honistly  :D
And now I just need to send an order off and get the figs,

Well, I have chosen the models for my initial warband - Actually, I can do two, depending on whether I want to field a Northern/Western British 'tribal' force or a more Southern/Eastern 'Romanised' force (that's what having WAB Romano-Brit AND Welsh armies does for you!) I think initially I'll do a Romanised force for the first campaign...probably set in Linnuis since I live near Durobrivae!!! :)

I have done my movement trays from 'Warbases' for the initial force and I am in the middle of making my 'shock' and 'shieldwall' markers ('shock' markers also from 'Warbases - their casualty markers that I've stuck models onto...)  I hope to post pics by the weekend, as I have my first game on Monday evening.

So it's all good!! :D Just need to read the rules properly now!!!!!!
