Title: Undead for 'Oldhammer'
Post by: Funghy-Fipps on July 17, 2012, 10:07:07 AM
I'm currently starting some small forces for WHFB3, starting with Undead (because that's what I had lying around).  Here is my progress thus far:

More fluff on das blog.

I love them! Very clean and grim paint jobs, I can almost smell the rot. I'm looking forward to your updates!

Cock on.  8)

I have a number of them languishing in my "unfinished 3rd Ed Armies" drawer at home. One day...

Next up is a Corpse Knight (level 20 Undead Hero).  Like the Ogre above he is a another DSA mini now available from Ral Partha (http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/18013-zombie-lord-on-stallion-carcass-p-1062.html).

Very nicely done.

There are some superb minis in the DSA range, (did that ever take off outside Germany?) a bit variable in scale unfortunately but quality of sculpting that is still amongst the very best.

Some great stuff here, looking forward to seeing this develop! But seriously, why WFB?!?!? Kings of War is sooo much better ;)

Seriously though, I don't mean to give you a hard time about rules, but check out KoW if you get the chance.

Again, great figs.

You are batting 1000 of the gate with this one! Love the bug eyes on that one guy. I did something like this for my zombies. Also I am not at all a fan of Klocke but I can't argue those ogres are great. If I ever make another order to RP earope.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Well the 'Oldhammer' thing is a bit of a trend at the moment and I'm a sucker for trends!  But, seriously, I have actually played KoW a couple of times earlier in the year and really liked it: its simplicity and elegance effortlessly kicks the clunky beast that is WHFB into touch.  I have actually been toying with the idea of getting skirmish movement trays - because this would allow me to use less models to represent units - specifically for playing KoW as well.  Third edition WHFB is a lot of fun, though!

GREAT minis & BEAUTIFULLY painted & based! The Almost Dead Guy in the front rank who has managed to hang on to his eye balls reminds me of the Crypt Keeper from Tales of the Crypt...this is a plus for moi.

That bone color is one of the better I've seen... usually they're too brown or too yellow or too something... but that is just right. Gonna have to try to copy it for some undead I've got waiting for the brush.

Nice looking unit.  ;D

Although I must say that the look gives me the idea that you've soaked them in GW wash as the final step. I'd recommend a final hgihlight or something to pick out a bit of the detail. But if it's a 42380 miniature project that may not be as wise..  lol

For the bone: Vallejo Model Color 70988 Khaki basecoat with white added for progressive highlights and then Devlan Wash all over.  Pretty basic, really.

As I find myself embarking on a similar project, I look on with interest!!

You mention ignoring the minimum unit sizes from the Army book: how does this affect game play? I am happy to throw some rules out the window also, but not having played a game of 3rd edition I can only imagine the longevity of the unit is the only variable?

Anyway, definitely looking forward to more. I hadn't perused the RP site in detail before and you've really come up with some gems!

Thanks and keep sharing!! :D

I could be interested too. Here's my question: where can I find the 3ed rules? It would be cool to download something. :P

Nice start!

I, too, am going to be embarking on an Oldhammer project next year and am torn between Undead and Bretonnians.

Nice to see your Undead inprogress, it may help me decide.
 ;)

(Of course, I could do Undead Bretonnians, couldnt I?)

It makes games very quick, actually (especially when one takes into account the Reserves phase too)!  I suppose this can be a good or bad thing depending on your disposition.  Personally I recall friends playing WHFB6 with 2000+ points armies and taking five-six hours to complete a game.  That really doesn't appeal to me at all!  I've opted to build smaller units because 1.  It's cheaper!  2.  It allows for quick, fun games that are over in a couple of hours tops. 3. I can paint units up more quickly and 4. It allows me to build multiple forces more quickly.  Best of luck with your own project!

I think THIS (http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/warhammer-third-edition-rule-book-pdfs.html) might be what you're after!

Thanks for comments all: it really does inspire me get off the X-box and get busy with the hairy wand!

I've only just caught onto the 3rd ed renaisence and loving readign through all the stuff. It was the first ed. I got started on and digging the books out and seeing all the old artwork has been a blast.
I'm looking forwards to seeing how your project progresses.
