Title: Painting red hair
Post by: KeyanSark on February 18, 2008, 02:51:42 PM
Hello:

Maybe this has been covered/answered yet, but I'd like to ask the great painters in the forum how did you paint realistic (I mean, not blazing orange) red hair in your miniatures.

Keyan, I have had some luck starting with a dark red brown for the base, then a dark/burnt orange for the mid, followed by a copper highlight. I hten use an orange ink glaze and touch up with some med orange final highlights. Variations of the colors will yeild differing shades of "red".

I have used GW paints: Scorched Earth, then Bestial Brown, then Beatial brown with orange, then more orange/ Bestial Brown plus a touch of bleached bone for highlight.

I tend to use a lot of brown as well as some earthy reds.  Orange I use spareingly unless I'm doing a blond/red or a strabery blond.  If you want some good visual refference for painting red hair check out some of Brom's artwork.  He paints a lot of redheads.

Too orangey?

That was done with a base coat of bestial brown, then highlighted with bubonic brown mixed with fiery orange, then fiery orange on it's own, and final highlights with yellow.

Then the whole lot was given a wash of thin chestnut ink to help definition.

Any use? I'm interested to see how yours work out now.

Well, here is the result... My version is inspired in the Kill Bill Bride, although I finally decided not to paint the black lines in her outfit. The base is a resin one casted in a local shop in Madrid.

Nicely done. I would have never thought to paint her up as the Kill Bill Bride. The hair looks good, red but not orange.  :)

Lo siento amigo,

There are a number of 'well-known facts' regarding those people blessed with hair the colour of an autumn sunset that are accepted by all non-ginger members of UK Armed Forces involving the effect of full moons, teeth clicking, conduct during card games and the aforementioned urine thing.

Enough said least I cause offence to any strawberry blond members of the forum

Un abrazo,

Janner
