Post by: fho on July 31, 2012, 08:31:28 PM
Hi,

We had last weekend lot of fun organising a Force on Force participation game in Finland's biggest gaming convention. It was lot of gaming and we estimated over 40 persons attended the demo game. A report with pictures is available in my blog http://maalaus.blogspot.fi/2012/07/force-on-force-game-presentation-at.html

Very impressive.  Good to see your hard work rewarded with so much interest

I was wondering what the level of interest is for miniatures gaming in Finland?  Were there many other games at the show?

Thank you!

The miniatures are in 28mm scale and they are from Empress Miniatures (http://www.empressminiatures.com/) and Eureka Miniatures (http://www.eurekamin.com.au/). The resin vehicles are from Imprint Models (http://www.imprintmodels.co.uk/Shop.aspx) except for hummers which are from Force of Arms (http://www.forceofarms.co.uk/). Scenery vehicles are cheap diecast toys from supermarket.

I would say Finnish wargaming community is quite active but relatively small. You generally find players in bigger cities which has University. Helsinki region has 1 million people and there are three stores which sell miniatures (http://www.fantasiapelit.com/ , http://mygamestore.fi/ and GW Helsinki). Our own club www.nopat.fi has 30+ active players and there are at least couple other well known clubs like http://orc.ayy.fi , http://www.the-ancients.com/gemigabok/ and http://strategiapelit.org/.

The most popular games in our club are Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40.000, Warmachine/Hordes, Flames of War and Force on Force. In addition we play some ancient miniatures gaming and board games. If you widen your search to southern Finland, you can find players for Epic and skirmish games like Malifaux, Eden, Infinity, Dystopian Wars and Carnivale.

The convention had all these presented and there was tournaments at least for Fantasy battle, 40k, Warmachine and Heroclixs. Both Warhammer tournaments had 40 participants and Warmachine tournament had 20 participants. I need to sort the rest of the pictures from my camera. There was other nice looking tables too, which were made by fellow gaming club members from the City of Tampere located 200km north of Helsinki.

Superb looking stuff!! That is how to present a wargame to the public. Excellent terrain, complemented by very well painted figures and vehicles, and an attractive and relevant display close by. Congratulations, I have seen more than a few demo games which could learn a great deal from this presentation, not least being the fact that you interacted with the public and everyone looked suitably impressed by your efforts. Bravo.

Thanks all,

It was great experience and great fun! And actually, when you do something like that - demo game or such - you seem get more out of the Con, compered if you just loiter around and see things. Well, loitering around in Con is fun too ;-). Next year we will do the same with different scenario or maybe a mini-campaing and will also introduce zombie game!

Very nice  8)

If its of any interest by the way, although you guys have clearly put a lot of effort into doing 28mm Moderns, I was informed by another 20mm Modern wargamer that there are plans to have some Modern Finnish in 20mm done (probably by Elhiem) there is a side project going on to do all the different countries in the Scandinavian battlegroup.

But if your interested and I hear anything else i'll let you know.
