Title: 15mm gladiator sculpted and painted
Post by: Diceplague on August 07, 2012, 01:26:03 AM
I just read the "Red Sand Blue Sky" from the 2 Hour Wargames and I'm dying to start playing it.  As I have no miniature gladiator I decided to try and sculpt some in 15mm. This is the first, a hoplomachus (maybe murmillo) gladiator. It´s my first 15mm and I can say is hard as it can be to sculpt this size. Modestly I believe It nicely depicts a gladiatos. What do you think?

I'm sold. This is respectable work. How long did it take you?

Very nice! I've seen may 15mm sculpts that aren't anywhere as good.

Can I give you an advice? Swop the shield and sword. The sword should be on the armoured arm.
Also if you want any more info on gladiators - my lifelong study subject- please don't hesitate to send me a pm.

Thanks WillieB, I appreciate your help. I donīt know squat about Gladiators and Iīve only start sculpting them for my gaming sessions of Red Sand Blue Sky. After Iīve sculpted this mini a friend told me that hoplomachus usually carries a spear and I didnīt know that. Iīve sculpted using the description from de rules and they donīt mentioned any favorite weapon or something for the hoplomachus so...

Iīll try to be more "accurate" with other gladiator classes from now on and Iīm really glad for you help offer(thatīs what I like in this comunity everybody is so kind spending their precious game time helping another gamerfella'   :) . Now I got 3 more on the way and I hope they will be ready next week.  ::)

Good effort here. I couldn't do that. :)
If you want cheap information on historical gear, you might refer to Crusader's gladiator range (http://www.crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=1&sub=27&page=1). At least the first six codes (that's ANG001 onwards) are fairly accurate in equipment detail.

Thanks Mad Doc! The gladiators from Crusaders are awesome. 28mm? I can´t say for sure...

Thanks Cyber Alien I just started too. Let me share 2 of the best lesson I got on net:

1- Sculpt a lot of minis. Some will be great some will make you lose sanity points. Don´t you worry. Enjoy the ride.
2- Remember that they will be painted. Try to visualize how they can be painted. The paint job can hide some flaws and save your hard effort.
