Title: Old School Fantasy Painting Log (Updated 24/12/20)
Post by: ilikepaintinglead on August 14, 2012, 01:45:35 PM
Hi all I thought I'd create a topic to showcase some of the things that I've been painting and keep everything together in one place and hopefully tempt some of you to come and check out my blog as we all know the more page views and followers you have the better it makes you as a human being  :P

Anyway first up are some picks of some ruined temple type terrain I created recently from packing materials nabbed from work:

I should hopefully have the time this week to sort out a tutorial on the creation process later in the week.

Anyhow I also finished off the start of a small beastman/were warband hanging out in the ruins

There's more detailed shots of each mini up on my blog if your interested.

Also finished up a couple of other fantasy mini's:

Not bad at all!! In fact - barring the base type which I'm not too keen on - I'd say you hit the nail on the hammer!  :-* :-*

An EXCELLENT PROJECT! The Old Minis & new terrain look TERRIFIC. You've got some thingies in there that were popular when I was still considered young. All VERY WELL DONE!
If possible, a long view of the gaming board would be cool.

Very nice...those scarey creatures look right at home in that ruin.

Well played sir!

Thanks very much Dr Viking and Blue  :D

@Deafnala - At the moment I don't really have a gaming board, these shots were all taken on the coffee table in my living room on-top of a painted towel:

Here's a shot of the rest of my terrain on the towel so you can get the idea:

I had the same reaction when I saw it used on someone's blog. So simple and cheap and it folds away nicely.

You just paint the towel with wall paint!?

Do you start from a green towel!?

I started with a brown towel (from Primark) and highlighted up through the greens using cheap acrylic paint from 'the works'.

Very nice terrain and modular. I tend to overthink terrain and then I went and picked up the GW Terrain Book from circa 2008 for $2 at a con and saw some nice, simple solutions like toweling. Unfortunately this lead me to more thinking. I made up a 4 x 4' gaming mat made out of felt with foam applied with spray matte medium and it works great but was a little awkward to negotiate in our d&d game where, after character sheets and drinks are accounted for we don't have 4' across. Am now thinking about smaller pieces of felt with pieces of other materials (here's where towels may come in) to cover the edges where two felt mats meet. Anyway, what you have there looks great and an ideal size for an rpg encounter.

BTW who makes those walls? I foolishly made 5 6" lengths out of real stones which look great but not worth the effort. Am looking around for some.

Nice work - love the towel idea but I think you're wheat fields turned out really nice too. Must try that one day.

The beastmen are excellent too - good mix!

@ Spooktalker - Sorry I'm not sure who makes the walls I got them in an ebay lot that didn't say.

Also if anyone's interested I've posted up a tutorial on my blog on how to create the ruins:

Although they make me wonder where all the years have gone, the Old Minis look WONDERFULLY WELL DONE. Unlike moi they've gotten better looking with age...at least the way you've done them up.

I think he needs some wode type warpaint but I'm undecided for now.

Again more scrap polystyrene covered in polyfilla this time mounted on an old 12" so it's fairly large

Here's a a couple of arty close-ups:

I've not been hugely productive lately but I did manage to finish the Dr Willetts Workshop house that I bought after seeing the review here on LAF

Awesome little model that was really easy to paint.

I also finished off a ton of baggage and barricades from various different manufactures including Ainsty:

Thanks very much, It's just getting closer and closer to March of Next year when the Reaper Bones Kickstarter ships and I've set myself the task of making a dent in the Lead mountain before I get buried under a pile of Bones :) At the moment I'm not making as much progress as I'd like and part of my current challenge is that I'm not allowing myself to purchase any new mini's which is really starting to hurt.

I can't really take credit for the flowers I bought them at a convention, you can get them from Antenocitis workshop though:

It's only paint on the towel no flock, and so far it's holding up pretty well there doesn't seem to be any 'flaking'

You should be able to buy whatever size you want from a fabric shop/seamstresses you know the kind of shops that have the huge rolls of material?

Finished this fella last week, early citadel pre-slotta pirate type dude and my first attempt at dark skin:

Also started and finished a scratch built Nurgle type beast, he's mostly milliput and green stuff apart from some Rat Ogre Arms and a couple of GW heads:

I'm really happy with how he turned out as he's my first major scratch build, and my first attempt at large style display base.
If you're thinking of doing any big basses I'd highly recommend checking out the tutorials on the Massive Voodoo blog as they were a fantastic inspiration:

Thanks everyone:

@ Scurv: Jesus man thanks very much your humble opinion means a lot, you have more faith in my painting than I do :)
@ Thantsants: Earthy I can do, if someone asked me to paint a nice clean High Elf, I'd probably have a fit.
@ Damien: The straw took forever to attach, it's just piece of Door mat attached with Matt Varnish, The Dwarf is an ancient Citadel Pre-slotta mini that came as part of an ebay junk lot. I think he's a variation of the mini in the bottom row in this pic
http://www.solegends.com/citcomp2/citcomp2022-01.htm
@ Dr. The Viking: Cheers, attaching the straw was a pain in the arse.
@ DeafNala: Cheers I love the older Citadel Fantasy sculpts, like you said they have a ton of Character.

Again thanks everyone, I should have some TSR sahuagin mini's to post up later in the week so keep checking back

Hey y'all I'm back with some new stuff, sorry for the delay but sometimes life kicks you in the nuts and you need a little while to recover, so anyway here's what I've been up to.

Now to the painted stuff, first up we have a really early Citadel CO3 cleric (second row down)

A few new things for your perusal:

Really early citadel Cleric:

Some Em4 proto-shoggoths:

I think this guy needs a little more work there's something not quite right about him, maybe needs a little more shading

Weird Earthdawn beastie:

I can't really get the purples to photograqph correctly he's coming out a lot more muted than the 'real' thing.

Howdy everyone, sorry for the slow amount of updates recently but I've not really had much in the way of updates to show off. I recently sort of completed my attempt to undercoat and base everything I own ready for paint slappage but ran out of space about three quarters of the way through so there are still a fair few mini's languishing in drawers.

Hopefully now I can pick up anyone of a ton of mini's and just crack on with painting something, which is what I did:

From left to right:
Citadel C34 Fire Elemental, Dreamblade Gutsoup Golem, Dreamblade Hulking Brute, Grenadier Copplestone Barbarian, Grenadier Ghost and finally dungeons and Dragons plastic mini with a little conversion work.

I love these Citadel elemental's that were released in the early eighties and would love to own the whole set but sadly I'm not the only one and they always seem to go for a little outside my price range on the old ebay, I only managed to get hold of this one as it was included in a bulk lot and didn't even appear in the ebay picture.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3699/8953216870_4c6162bb31_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/8953216870/)

Next up we have the Gutsoup Golem from Dreamblade, really simple paint job that was mostly achieved with washes, glazes and thinned down paint finished off with a healthy dose of tamiya red and clear for that wet look. If you're in need of some crazy monsters check out the Dreamblade range as they always seem to pop up on ebay for cheap and paint up really well.

Another Dreamblade figure this time a Hulking Brute, I'm not to sure on this guy I think he needs some kind of tattoos or scarification to break up all the flesh.

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2893/8953174468_9e16923636_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/8953174468/)

Grenadier Copplestone Barbarian, really simple paint job and a ton of Tamiya clear red. You can still get this guy from EM4:
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Infantry.html

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3734/8952007517_c028a2b45e_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/8952007517/)

I think this guy is a dungeon and dragons pre pained mini, He originally had a small hook like weapon that due to the bendy nature of the plastic that these figures are made of was completely ruined. I removed the hook and drilled through the hand and added the cocktail stick and wire club.

Grenadier Ghost, insanely quick paint job I just fired some watered down blue over the grey base coat added some fluorescent yellow to the face and left it at that.

Let me know what you think

Isn't the miniature above the ghost from the Pathfinder Runelord campaign? I seem to remember that one. He's one of the incestious half Oger hillbillies...

The boxes/trays on the wall are these:
http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/html/onlineshop/rub/aTrayLarge16.php

I got mine from Hobbycraft in the UK when they had a buy two get one free deal going on, I think you can probably get these trays in the US too if that's where you're based. I was over the moon when I found these as they're perfect for 28mm mini's, you can fit 5/6 in each section if they're on 30mm bases

What did you used for the miniatures trays on the wall (square plastic ones), please ?

I really like your minis too  :o

Cheers everyone for the great feedback, I've managed to slap a little paint on some figures this week, and made a little progress on the Mega mini's goblins that I purchased a while back after I heard they were closing down their shop. I would link to them but it looks like Mega mini's has taken them down and sold the molds onto Midlam miniatures:
http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/news/news-30.html so hopefully they should appear for sale very soon.

Here they all are based up and their flesh base coated along with a Mega mini's Wretch that looks like is still available from Mega miniatures.

So far I've only finished one of the group, mainly as a tester for the rest of the group:

I've tried to go for a more 'earthy' yellowy green on the flesh hopefully to distinguish them from the orcs that I  painted many moons ago. The 'string' on the bow is a tiny piece of wire that drove me insane trying to wind around the bow. The red nose on the ears, nose, knees and elbows is just a mix of watered down pink paint and red glaze.

As Jevenkah was asking earlier here's how I display my finished stuff:

The Display Cabinet is, with all your LOVELY pieces store within, a WONDROUS SIGHT. & the new old Goblin painted up FANTASTICALLY...love what you did with the nose. GREAT WORK!

Speaking of noses: does nose = hooter in British slang? Over here hooters = boobs...two peoples separated by a common language.

In my never ending quest to never paint all my miniatures I had a crazy idea the other day for a modular dungeon system that is easy to store and should hopefully be easy and cheap to make. The crazy idea was to take a normal box file and create a small section of terrain that would hopefully sit next to other future sections and would be easy to rearrange.

Here's the box file as is at purchase:

(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5521/9060022531_f39ab3276b_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9060022531/)

I started by removing the paper holder at the bottom and sketched in roughly where I wanted the sewer channel to go and any doors to be and the rough layout of any walls.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3827/9062247212_f0a208125d_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9062247212/)

This was supposed to be a step by step but I completely missed out most of the steps after this one. I'll try and explain the processes in any future updates and if anyone is not sure of anything just give me a shout.

Here's the box'o'dungeons as it stands at the moment:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7364/9062225700_b3bbb17530_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9062225700/)

The paving is hand drawn onto sections of polystyrene pizza base and then PVA glued over chunks of polystyrene to build up the height.

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7314/9062231526_4386f1d15c_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9062231526/)

It still needs a some work sorting out the gaps and joins between sections and I still have a little more cobbling to finish off.

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2845/9062234376_90df6cd7e6_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9062234376/)

Once I've finished all the stone work I'll have a look at creating some water effects for the sewer channels and some wooden plank walkways/bridges for access to the different levels. I'm still in two minds whether or not to cut holes in the ends of the box so that they match up with future boxes or to leave them as self contained boxes?
The end of each sewer channel could end in metal bars and each section could be accessed by doors to keep each box self contained that way I don't end up losing the structural integrity of the box? Let me know what you think in the comments.

That looks FANTASTIC; even in it's W.I.P. state, it a FINE piece of modeling. It's potential is MIND BLOWING...just looking at it for a few moments was all it took to get the possible expansion ideas swirling. An INSPIRING WORK!

Thanks very much, I can't take full credit as I'm sure I nicked the idea from someone on this forum. I'm hoping to get it finished over the weekend then I can start planning what can go in the next box.

I've nearly finished the first box section I'm just waiting for the varnish to dry and I've got a few little walkways to create but it's pretty much done.

Let me know what you think and let me know if you need anything explaining.

Thanks everyone, I'm chuffed with the result!

@FramFramson, No huge secrets really just polyurethane gloss varnish poured over a mix of sand, grit, other detritus and PVA. I took the pictures last night and it looks like the varnish has shrunk/sank a fair bit over night so I might have to add extra layers whenever it dries which isn't really happening at the moment  :?

How does the lid of the box work? Will it get in the way or are your removing it?

Just a quick update, DON'T use polyurethane gloss varnish for water effects, it looks awesome when it's still wet but as it's been drying mine has started go cloudy and has completely shrunk :'(

I've gone out and purchased some of this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111042007347?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
looking at the reviews online it seems pretty easy to use so hopefully I can save the sewer over the weekend.

@Dijit - I'm still undecided on the box lids, I'd like to keep them that way everything will stack better but they will get in the way once opened, decisions, decisions...

On the box lids, I'd leave them; re, once the Adventurers leave a section the lid is closed again. Members of the party must draw on their memory as to what the area actually looked like AND, if you use a DM/GM, you could add some nasty surprises for a return trip...BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry for the distinct lack of updates recently, sometimes the hobby mojo's not there and I don't like posting if I don't have anything to show off. My creativity was sparked with some amazing recent ebay scores, the first being this huge pile of old school goodness for the princely sum of £32:

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2824/9207051861_eb7bb38d97_o.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9207051861/)

This is how it appeared on ebay so I took a gamble and placed a bid, the lead gods were smiling that day and verily they decreed that the haul was good and the rot nil.
I'll post up separate pics of everything I've sorted out at the end of the post if you fancy a look.

Here's a couple of shots of the first two mini's I pulled out the pile and subjected some brush work. First up we have a Fantasy Specials Female Tortouress with sword from around 82 (I think):

Not sure why I went with the blue on the sword and shield but I think it works really well in contrast with the flesh-tones and the red cape. Not really sure if it's that noticeable but  on the left hand side of the base I've added a tiny little mushroom that I knocked up a batch of:

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2861/9234154218_b4fe1b7b10_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9234154218/)

Next up we have a citadel Barbarian that I can't for the life of me find on Stuff of Legends so I'm not sure what range he's from:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7322/9234149248_c05a5e91f1_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9234149248/)

This week I also came across this great idea from Chris's Gaming Journal that I've stolen, he's basically used a Magic the Gathering card creating program to create cards for his All Things Zombie campaign:
http://cthulhuchris.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/15mmcouk-hooded-executioners.html
I ran with this idea and knocked up some cards using the Song of Blades and Heroes rules and an online warband creator (http://www.wombatzone.com/files/SBHform.html)

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2819/9231356043_4221bdb430_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9231356043/)
P5050054 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9231356043/) by headnhalfilikepaintinglead (http://www.flickr.com/people/96058744@N08/), on Flickr

The idea behind the cards is that I can grab any of my painted mini's dig out the corresponding card and knock up a warband quick sharpish, so far I've got about 60 cards and I've just got myself a printer so I don't have to sneak print things at work anymore and I can churn out cards as and when I finish a mini.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3735/9234130742_3080aa5050_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9234130742/)
P5050057 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/9234130742/) by headnhalfilikepaintinglead (http://www.flickr.com/people/96058744@N08/), on Flickr

The warband creator lets you create brand new creatures and classes and totals up the skills etc and gives you a points cost which I've added to the top right of the card.

Back to the initial haul, I've managed to strip a lot of the stuff already and undercoated and based up some choice pieces ready to sit on my shelves for an age, I'll save listing where everything's from and which range until they re actually finished but as far as I can tell most of the mini's are really early Citadel slotta and pre-slotta:

It is indeed an AD&D Barbarian, there were 5 or 6 variants for each of the three basic designs.

Hello everyone and hows it going? I can't believe its been nearly two years since I've posted anything in this thread. Sorry for the disappearing act sometimes life kicks you in the nuts and other times life tears them off whilst giggling maniacally...

I'm finally back in a position where sitting down to paint is something that I can enjoy again and hopefully I'll have time to get creative again. Most of these bits and pieces have been painted over the last year so they're not necessarily 'new'. It looks like some of my older pictures have disappeared too, I think when I had a purge of my flikr I may have moved some stuff around and screwed up the links, so apologies for the gaps.

Anyway enough waffle here's the most 'recent' stuff:

I've no idea who manufactures this knight but I like the sculpt with his little stumpy legs. I've tried to make the shield look as if the design is painted over old splintered wood by adding tiny little vertical flashes of white over the freehand flame.

Classic citadel knight, I've tried to keep the color scheme the same for this guy and the flame shield knight and copied the 'XXXX' motif on both to suggest maybe they're related.

Lovecraft Gug I think, I have a feeling they're 'supposed' to be grey in the fiction.

Unknown moss figure that I think needs something else doing to it as it doesn't really work. I hate using the term but it doesn't really 'pop'.

Some kind of green wraith I think from Ral Partha

I also made some packing foam terrain, and here's a few group shots:

Hopefully going forward I'll have more things to show you lovely people, cheers.

Hi, like a lot your figures, I think your basing is great.  8)
I like most the non-swamp-thing mini (I'm a big fan of the Alan Moore comic book): maybe you may think about adding something on the background, like a couple o trees with lianas behind him (the model is very flat, doing so meybe could give him a bit of 3D...)

Most recently I've been painting up the cult of the Kracken lord from  midlam miniatures, awesome old school miniatures with tons of character:

Yeeurgh! Suitably creepy - having them without faces adds to their otherworldliness. Nice work on the paint jobs.
