I've just finished my first set of terrain boards. 15 blocks in all, which should allow for different set-ups. All carved and painted XPS. First real use of an airbrush as well - I still need some (or rather a lot of) practice.
The intended use if for Cutlass/LotHS or Mordheim. There still must be be added some buildings and stairs, bridges, jetties,....
The google sketchup design was the following:

This set-up is very similar to the one in the following thread, the level of detail and finishing in my boards is much, much lower.

It took me about 7 afternoons from start to finish (since I didn't find XPS sheets in the required thickness, I had to glue two sheets together, which was quite time consuming). Here are some views from different angles (clickable to get a larger view). The whale is recycled from my LPL6 entry

The whale is a stroke of genius.

Today I finally finished the first building - made of MDF with plasticard roofs, Zvezda and TM Terrain windows. The bricks at the bottom and the chimney are inscribed XPS.
I probably add som Ivy aroud the entrance to break up the monotonous front. There are also some shutters for the Zvezda windows.

Really nice board, especially texture FX. If I could advise something, you should try to work on weathering a bit. Use diferent juices you can see in real harbors : brown, black, green. For brown, strong coffee or tea works great. For other things, diluted paints or inks (no need for hobby grade paint or ink) will work.
Finally don't forget to put a coat of matte varnish (spray) on them, since washes and coffee/the are not that stable in wet environement (= for example if you accidentaly throw your beer on lol )
Keep the good work ;)

Yup the wale is great, and the rest looks really good as well. Just an FYI oregano looks great for Ivy at that scale ;)

Lovely!
Where's the whale from?!

My weathering skills are not up to speed yet - mostly I succeed in making thing look dirty (in an unrealistic way). I'll practice some more on smaller pieces first. Are there any good tutorials available on line ?

I have a commercial product from following company (the 1:45 scale looks all right scale-wise by my standards) : http://www.mininatur.de/products_catalogue.php?lang=en
It probably will turn out to be oregano, but for 4€ for a small pack, it's not breaking the bank.

It was a childrens toy I picked up in a thrift store - a hard plastic whale, which snapped together its jaws when you pressed on the dorsal fin. I cut it in half, added some greenstuff to fill up the holes where the screwe were visible, based it and gave it a quick paintjob.
I have no idea who was the manufacturer - there were no recognisable markings on the beast.

Schleich have one in 1:32 scale, discontinued from the info on this page, but maybe you'll find one on Ebay
