I couldn't find an earlier post by me on this project which is odd but maybe I didn't make one :)
The Gladiators for this were pushed to the front of the queue by this year's LPL which always ruins my schedules. But, no matter, we're back where we should be again and with the miniatures already done, so there's a bonus!
Anyway, I started on the arena a while ago and today I made the actual structures for it. There'll be more details once I write them up and the main building might get a Romanesque roof too, I'm undecided at the moment.
here it is so far:

Those in the know will recognise the basic layout of an arena for Red Sand Blue Sky by Two Hour Wargames which is my chosen rule set for gladiators.
The project and pics of the gladiators and animals etc is here:

Looking forward to seeing the dice towers

Thanks :)
Here's the write up so far:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR lol

Lovely to see this rolling again, it was searching for arena ideas that led me to your site in the first place! I do like the idea of not having a big empty wall around your arena, it'll set it out from the crowd.
Have you thought about Red Sand Black Moon so some of your fantasy figures can get in on the action?
EDIT - where did you get your panther from? The only big cats I can ever seem to find are reaper lions.
-
great start, Paul, definitely looking forward to more.
-
Lovely project so far!

It's from Northstar.
I'm sure the arena will see more action than just gladiators at some point.

Thanks for sharing your take on this topic here. It's a great start, not the least for a good choice of rules. :D
Looking forward to how this progresses (and knowing your other projects, it will efficiently).
-
Wicked cool :D

I've painted the buildings.
I'm going to make a roof section for the main building and add some patchy grass to the edges of the tiled area and then everything should be pretty much finished.
-
All done.
I added a roof to the main building to keep it in line with my original sketches.

And added some static grass to the board.

Looks good Paul 8)
Can I ask if you do all your sketching on a computer?
cheers

Thanks James :)
I use my iPad, one of the reasons I got it was to be able to draw stuff again. It's very easy to use. The Arena sketch was done in 53 a Microsoft planning/ideas app but usually I use a note taking app called Bamboo Paper. It's just for idea scribbles really, the stylus doesn't let you be too precise so you have to allow yourself to be a bit 'loose' (couldn't say that on Frothers :) )
I have some RPG and games ideas stuff on my deviantart page here:

Bamboo paper eh? I'll have a look at that, it might prove useful :)
Thinking about it there'll be a PM on its way soon...
cheers

Hey... out of interest, have you been speaking to Kestrel of the Revs pirates recently? He was talking about an idea when he was at MacLAM that's quite similar to this...
Stunning work as usual. I love how prolific you are. Your games always look as though they're great fun!
Cheers

Some great ideas you have come up with.
A fine job on the Arena. Looks good.
Maybe seeing what you have done will get me to work on my guys.
-

Nope, not a word.
-
Inspiring stuff. :)
-
Great stuff as always. Here's a weird question. I have Red Sand/Blue Sky, but I must have an older version than everybody else. The version everyone else seems to have involves area movement, while mine has inches and the game seems overcomplex to me to be getting all the praise. Do I have an old version? Its marked 2003.

You've got the old one. The new uses a grid. Great for running a ludus in a campaign, but the actual game play gets tedious quickly. Sameish short bouts, over and over.
-
That's what I was afraid of.
-
I'm writing my own gladiator rules anyway because I enjoy such things :)
-
It staggers me how quickly you complete your projects, and to such a high standard too.
-
That's very kind but there's not much to this one. A dozen or so figures and three simple buildings don't really make for much work :)
-
Well, here we are again.
The 'year of getting stuff done' continues with an upgrade to my Gladiator project.
As was pointed out above, Red Sand, Blue Sky got very stale very quickly and, when I compiled a list of my games at the beginning of this year, the gladiators were scheduled for eBay because I thought an arena fighting game like this didn't have any legs.
However...
There were some things in its favour. it's very portable, the amount of stuff you need for a game is minimal and I really liked the gladiators that I'd painted. I'd also bought a load of painted gladiators of LeadAsbestos and it would be a shame to just flog them on unused.
After looking around I decided that Jugula was the game to try. I stumped up for a rule book and 4 sets of cards so all my friends (and maybe the students at school) could join in and the gladiators were saved (yay!). A quick grid added to the arena and we're good to go.

I am impressed by the fire that burns inside of you; keeping that steam engine churning.
-
Glad to see the gang get some attention. I hope you are successful in finding a fun time playing a gladiator game, as I just haven't found one I like the feel of yet.
-
Jugula looks like it will be ok. I'll find out soon enough I guess :)
-
I found the few games I've played so far were all good fun. I think you made a good call with 28mm for the gladiators though. I wasn't all that impressed with the actual Jugula figures
-
Jugula is a very good game indeed. It's not a great simulation of gladiatorial combat, but I have to say most good simulations of such combat don't make for very good games, so maybe that is no bad thing.
-
We had our first game of Jugula last night. It was good fun and, whilst not a gladiator 'simulation', it is a decent arena combat game with a fairly convincing gladiator skin.

Added some Sagittarii and Velites since Jugula has cards for them.

Nice ones. :-* :-*
From what manufacturer are the velites please?
-
Both sets of figures are Black Tree Design Romans.
-
Many thanks for the info.
Somehow i didnt noticed them and they look great.
Also usefull to transform. :)
