I decided I wanted another pub for my Victorian layout before I start working on some shops. Unfortunately commitments outside the hobby have piled up leaving me no time at the workbench, as a result I almost lost my wargaming mojo (sounds like a confession to Wargamers Anonymous doesn't it). Anyway, some recent great build projects (namely AndyM's, Jimbibbly's, Trull's and Pappa Midnight's) have fired the old mojo back up so its back to the workbench.
The pictures of the work so far aren't exactly exciting but I know if I post the project on here I'll stop mucking about and get it finished. I've only got one evening a week I can spare at the moment so bear with me.
I'm going for a corner pub, the sort that would have been prevalent in Victorian London and alas now being demolished on an all too regular basis. The build is modelled on this pub which stood on the Old Kent Road:
A lot of thought and planning has gone into this one and I decided I would build and paint the main sections before fitting them together as it will be too fiddly to paint them otherwise. I made these templates to start with (thinking of making some more and having them as generic starters for future builds):
These will make up the ground floor sections and as per the original pub will stand forward of the main structure. They are cut and styled from styrene sheets and mounted on foamed pvc. The columns are plastic half rods from Plastruct:
Four sections painted and ready for some weathering. You'll see on one of the bar sections I'm experimenting with half frosted windows. Svennn suggested using A4 document wallets and it works for me (cheers old fruit :)):
This build will be quite detailed so I'm going to be more adventurous with guttering etc. With that in mind I bought a pipe bender and its my new favourite toy. I'm using brass rods inspired by Trull's recent build thread:
That's it for now, I'll try and update each week, hopefully you wont find it too tedious to follow.

That's it for now, I'll try and update each week, hopefully you wont find it too tedious to follow.
Quite the contrary, if your posts resemble this one.
-
Excellent work.....I'll keep watching this one!
-
You have done quite a lot already. I will repeat myself and say the sections should have been moulded before you painted them though ;D ;D (I could have knicked some for my project ;))
-
Bloody hell, Thunderchicken!
That is your mojo returning with a serious bang.
:-*
What a great start. I will be watching this with great interest.
Even greater interest than usual as I grew up within a few minutes walk of the Shard Arms.
It is, as you say, now gone. Along with almost every other pub on the Old Kent Road.
:'(
It had several attempts at 'rebranding' before closure, finally being called 'Cockney's'
just before it closed..... ::)
What you cant see in the picture is the old water trough that was outside.
It must be behind the car that is parked outside.
It was still there right up to the 90's.
;)
Thanks for the memories....
:)
-
What is the source of your exterior brickwork? Is it plastic sheeting?
-
Nice stuff TC - keep up the new mojo
Shaun
-
Feck sake, that's a start and half!!!!! :o :o :o :-* :-* 8)
-
Feck sake, that's a start and half!!!!! :o :o :o :-* :-* 8)
Sneaky little bugger ain't he ;D
That looking great TC 8) The colour for the brickwork is particulary nice :-*
Where did you get your pipe bender?
cheers
James
-
Thank ye chaps! :)
Svennn, I know, I know but I got all impatient and wanted to paint them.
Alfrik, they are embossed plastic sheets (styrene). I buy them from two UK manufacturers direct - Plastikard and South East Finecast but I know you can get them through third parties such as Antenociti's. For my builds I use 'O' gauge 7mm. I'd be surprised if you cant source some in the U.S.
Jimbib, they are made by a company called Dubro (Du-Bro). I got mine on e-bay but it looks like there are none listed in the UK at the mo, plenty in the U.S where they come from.
I'd bookmarked these sites in the UK if that helps:

-
Your builds just get better and better,I love the little touches, especially the plastic wallet for frosted glass is inspired, good old Svenn. :)
-
Some start :o :o :o :o
That looks great :-* :-* :-*
You should have got molds made, they would have sold well.
-
Outrageous! :-*
-
I'm speechless... :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Very cool build. You need to check your emails though.
-
Very nice Neil. Your buildings just keep getting better 8)
What did you use for the decorative brickwork at the roofline? It it wooden beading? It looks very effective. :)
-
Thanks again chaps. :)
Paul, they are from Fenris and come in very handy indeed. Of course you'd have them scored out of the blue stuff in minutes ;)

-
That's cracking!
-
That is going to be a seriously nice pub!!!!!! :-*
Excellent work, I'm looking forward to seeing this finished.
Regards
PM
-
That's lovely. Can I have my wake in that place when I die?
The Shard Arms, it must be the place where the expression 'Liquid Courage' was coined.
-
Thanks chaps.
Hammers, hang around till closing time and there'll probably be a fight in the public bar.
Mason, thanks for the heads up with the water trough, I think I'll add that. I'm using a bit of artistic licence for rear yard but hopefully I'll do it proud. If you look on Google Streetview where the pub used to be there's a block of flats but interestingly they've got the same footprint as the pub.
-
Blimey! I remember that pub, I think the Irish footballer Eamon Dunphy once owned it.
It was a bit of a shit hole, unlike your model which is looking superb 8)
-
Alright I got this one!
People! Stop cluttering the man in flatter!!!
He's obviously won the lottery and is employing the people that would normally be lining up for work but no taxes to build his little Victorian dream haven.
I mean, really, should talent just have suddenly plummeted in his lap over night?
HA! Bastard!
Yes I really am just being jealous of his marvellous work
-
Brilliant work!
-
Hi all, a quick update. I've been busy with a new job and much welcomed overtime but I've finally had a chance to return to the build. It's slow progress as it's my most detailed build yet along with a bit of a learning curve trying new techniques. I'm hoping to have it finished in the next few weeks.
There's only one pic of progress but it gives you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve. The first pic is from my original post, I've been working on the section in the top left hand corner which will be the rear of the pub :
Here's how it looks now, a bit more weathering needed before I sign it off (sorry the pic is so big but Photobucket is a bloody nightmare these days):
More updates soon.
-
Only just spotted this, very nice indeed. Always glad to see some of our architectural bits getting an outing :)
-
And very welcome they are too! :)
-
It looks bloody gorgeous so far.
And, as Bugsda has mentioned, so much better, and cleaner, than the original!
You had better get weathering!
;)
-
Really nice worked. Very, very impressive. :)
-
Looks great Neil :-* :-* :-*
Where are the pipes from?
-
Smashing job :-*
Excuse me, gotta pick my lower jaw from the floor.
-
Where are the pipes from?
I think they are real pipes, he has just shrunken them....somehow.
::)
They are rather nice, aren't they?
-
Terrific work Cheeks. As much as I want to see it finished I suggest you keep with the patient approach as it is paying dividends.
-
Oooooh, cracking!
-
Makes me think of that rub-a-dub where we went to lunch Thursday before BLAM. The Windsor? A proper Victorian establishment, that.
-
I heard his twin did all the work on this one. ;)
Absolutely stunning, I can't wait to see this finished, but as Bago said don't rush it. ;D
-
Thanks chaps :)
Colin & Mason, the soil pipe junctions and fittings are from a company called Forty-Third, all I had to do was connect them together with 1/8" Evergreen plastic rod.
I was worried that 1:43 would look too big but it seems to work well. You can get fittings for 3/32" pipes too if you want something smaller. I bought some of their street lamps as they had the 'swan neck' style I've been after, again I was worried they would be too big but they scale up well in my opinion. Here's a link:
http://www.forty-third.co.uk/43_phoenix_home.htm
In the meantime I'll follow the advice of the wise old men and take my time with this build ;). I'm toying with the idea of curtains, hmmmmmmm...........
-
What a lovely project and great craftsmanship ...
:-*
-
Top notch work TC!! :o :o
-
Many thanks for the Forty-Third tip.
Much appreciated!
:)
-
lovely work.... fortythird is bookmarked...
-
When it's finished, would you embiggen it for me? I could do with another decent pub round here to spend my hard-earned miniatures money in :D
Fabulous attention to detail...
-
Thanks again chaps. :)
I've just ordered some more bits from Forty Third so I'll let you know how they scale up.
Have managed to do a bit more work on the pub and I'm hoping to start putting the structure together over the weekend.
Time to bug me 'ol mucker, bestest mate in the whole world Svennn to make me some signs soon ;)
-
well have noticed the photos on the accessories page are for SandS models... ;D
-
The drainpipes look really good. Nice chunky cast iron looking!
-
well have noticed the photos on the accessories page are for SandS models... ;D
S&S or S&D? ;)
-
lol ooops, your brain does fill in details at times...
-
As long as it wasn't S&M ;)
-
There is (or was, ten years ago at least) an S&M Hardware store opposite the train station in Macclesfield which always made me chuckle slightly when on my way to visit my grandparents. lol
-
Quick update. The building is taking shape so thought I'd post a couple of pics.
As you can see from this one, I'm currently working on the ground floor. The black bits of foamboard in the centre are just to give you an idea of the layout. As per the picture of the original pub on Page 1 the angled wall section will be covered by a sign hence why it isn't decorated:
Here's the side and back. The backyard still has to be walled and paved and you may see on the base the footprint of the out-house; that has been built and just needs to be put into place. I want to add a large painted sign to the side wall, the only way I can think of achieving that effect is to either create a decal and stick it on or make a stencil. Any other suggestions would be welcome.
I'm working on the chimneys tonight so will hopefully have the roof section completed by the weekend. Then I'll enclose the yard which will see the bulk of the main structure complete; that means it's then down to the detail and weathering. My least favourite bit.
-
:o :o :o
Absolutely stunning, Thunderchicken!
You are really rolling back the years (for me, anyway, maybe Bugsda, too...) seeing this.
It looks spot on!
:-*
"that means it's then down to the detail and weathering. My least favourite bit."
I must admit, that is the bit I enjoy the most.
You build 'em, I'll wreck 'em!
;)
-
:-* :-* :-*
-
Fan-bloody-tastic mate!! :o :o It almost makes me want to be 28mm to go for a pint there!!! :D
-
Fan-bloody-tastic mate!! :o :o It almost makes me want to be 28mm to go for a pint there!!! :D
At that size, it'd sure take a job lot of pints to get whizzed! Maybe that's TC's plan: Open for business with 2ml pints at £1 apiece! lol
-
Thanks chaps.
Fram, you could be on to something there.
Mason, you've got a deal. ;)
-
Wonderful work. May I ask where you obtained the decorative mouldings at the top of each wall?
-
Some really nice work on this, as can be expected :)
I bought a book last week and immediately thought of this project!

Cheeks, my good man. Glad to see this progressing you talentless git ;D ;)
cheers
James
-
Wonderful work. May I ask where you obtained the decorative mouldings at the top of each wall?
They're from Fenris Games and very hand they are. You can also find them through model railway suppliers but I don't know how they scale up.
Christian, that looks like a decent book. I've still got access to masses of the suff through my uni.
Thanks Jimbib, I've done work on it but will hold back on the pics for now.
-
Another quick update chaps.
Although it doesn't look like much has happened I've been beavering away at new detailing and building techniques which have taken a while to get the hang of but will save time in the future.
Anyway, a couple of pics of the usual crap quality for you below. Chimney's are done and more of the main structure. The white and grey boards will be the signs which Svennnnnn has kindly offered to do for me.
I've still got the rear yard to do and pics of that will be next. After that I'll be adding detailed bits such as lamps and weathering then it's job done and I'll finally bring the thread to a close. Promise ;).

And it seems to be bloody HUGE!
Great work on the bricks, it really shows that you have taken your time with it.
Really looking forward to the man with many 'N'''s signs.
Should really make it pop.

Damned impressive Old Bean. ;D
-
Very talented you are, sir.
-
Thanks very much chaps :).
I was hoping to spend more time with it today but Ive been told I need to take this Christmas shopping malarky more seriously. Hey ho.
-
Very impressive Neil. Top work :)
-
Have you made or will you be making more of Olde London?
-
Incredible work! :o
-
Thank you chaps.
Steve, on top of what I've already built there's a lot planned. Some of it is already on the production line and in various stages of completion including a few Oshiro buildings from Jimbibbly.
As an update to the build Svennn has sent me the pub signs which are bloody lovely and will be added to the pub soon.
-
Sounds great - I'm really impressed with all aspects of the build. Inspiring stuff!
-
Good god just discovered this...lovely
;D ;D ;D
-
Superb work and finishing, TC! Could you give us some details how you paint the brickwork? Looks very realistic. :o
-
Thank you gentlemen. :)
Admiral, bear with me and I'll put some WIP pics together for you.

I think you should give up this new found skill in building things and return to your former favourite hobbies; knitting and flower arranging. ;)

It's starting to look more like a pub thanks to Svennn drawing up the signs for me. I was going to take pics for you but the camera is playing up and they are coming out dark, even with the flash. I'll take more tomorrow when the light is better but here's some (dim) tasters:

Actually, I think your darker/dimmer pictures capture the ethos of the setting/location.

That's a beauty! Richard

Well done Neil. Superb craftwork.

Nice :-*
-
Lovely job Neil :-* :-* :-*
I think this may have been asked before, where are the gas lamps from?
How did you do the white backed sign on the brick work?
The town must be some size now.
What is next in your plan?
-
Thank you gentlemen........ and Malamute ;). Bit of a fail getting the pics done today so will try again tomorrow.
Did Svenn do the adverts as well as the signage?
I think he found them online and sent them to me. They are perfect for the build.
You're still missing the top cornice corner though ;D
I still cant make my mind up what to do with them.
Colin, the lamps are from Langley Models but are HO rather than O gauge.
The sign on the brickwork is a decal. After a suggestion from Svennn I got hold of some white inkjet decal paper from Antenocitis workshop and printed the design on to that. When it is on the wall it's then coated with stuff called Microsol which blends it into the brickwork and gives it the painted on look. Clever Svennn.
Next is a viaduct which I've already started working on and then its down to the river for some dockside buildings. Skrapwelder sent me some of his fab warehouses so they will be put together and painted soon.
I need them all finished for an EotD game I'm running for Westwind at WMMS in March so the clock is ticking :?.
-
Wowee Zowee! :-*

Wow!!!!I wish i could spend that attention to detail ! The only thing wrong with this pub is that you can't walk in and order a pint lol lol
-
Thanks again chaps :)
Have you ???
Aye, got me some arches from Skytrex. Already primed and will paint them up when this is finished.
-
Outstanding Pub. Like all the rest.
Snitchy sends.
-
Hi all,
Another quick update. The backyard is pretty much finished, just the top of the wall and a bit more weathering to do. I'll be adding some straw to the yard too. Before anyone asks I still havent decided what to do with the cornice corners yet.
I've been distracted by another build I'm working on along side this one (between you and me its in the background of these pics but shush, don't tell anyone).
As is the norm the quality of the pics are crap and this week I think I'll blame the perpetual rain and gloomy skies.

Lovely job :-* :-* :-*

Im always looking for a good source for pipe works, might I enquire as to your source for the exterior plumbing? btw it looks great ;)
-
Hi Alfrik,
The pipes are plastic rods shaped and bent to suit but the junctions for the soil pipes, the wall fittings and outlets are from here:
http://www.forty-third.co.uk/43_sdm_buildings.htm
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the comments chaps. :)
