Title: T&T in Darkest Africa using small units
Post by: DonVoss on August 29, 2012, 10:46:15 AM
Inspired by driscoles and his postings about small unit-gaming, I builded two forces for darkest africa.

First my belgians, pretty much as driscoles suggested them.
-heroe
-2 scouts
-4 man squad trained askaris
-2x3 man squads one raw askaris, one veteran+leader
-5 girl bagagge

And the salvers following Ibn Ibn Ali.

-heroe
-4 man squad with swords and a shotgun
-4 man squad with muskets
-3 man squad with rifle, musket
-5 camel bagagge

...and a small steamer.

I am really looking forward gaming these...:)

Cheers,
DV

Great work!! I'd also be interested to see how these small games play out.

Do you modify the rules at all? I imagine units would be suppressed out of existence in short order!
Title: Re: T&T Colonial using small units
Post by: Plynkes on September 05, 2012, 10:46:14 AM
Not necessarily. If the units opposing them are also small then they won't be taking as many hits as they would in a game with big units.

Little bit of Thread-Necromancing here...:)

We managed to play our first 2 games of T&T-small-units on friday.

I did not manage to scale a full AAR but shot a few pics.

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a602/56er/2014-06-27205103_zps67235a93.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/56er/media/2014-06-27205103_zps67235a93.jpg.html)

We played first an 1 on 1 to get a feeling for the small-rules, and in the second game, we tried out a 3 players match.
Initial Setup.

Sorry for the blurry shots: the belgians.

And Native band, led by a white eccentric explorer.
Mainly Wargames factory minis.

The steam tramp station.
PlastCraft japanese buildings with some sing posts...;)

And my arab slavers. Lost two games, but had great fun...;)

The rulkes worked really well.
We houseruled just the heroes (only 2 hp, never more than one attack) and the CC. Failing your moral test resulted jusst in an retreat.

Not that it helped my arabs... :D

So overall highly recommenden: try it out!
Excellent for painting up a sidetrack kind of warband and start gaming immediately... 8)

Cheers,
Don

Hey Don, looks great!

We already played a lot of games with very small units due to limited space and up to 6 players since I first read about your ideas here!
I also like your new mat, only the water could use a glossy finish!

To limit the heroes hitpoints and fighting abilities worked good as well in our games!

Is there a link to the discussion on using smaller unit sizes? It looks very interesting and something I'd like to try out.

Its not realy a discussion Ray but you can downsize the Unit to a Single man and play very small but exciting Games. I also do it very often this way.

Ah, right. Makes perfect sense really. Thanks for the reply Driscoles.

I've had the rules for a while but haven't played in ages, I'm looking to do some smaller scale Colonial wargaming and this seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.  :D

I builded a paddlesteamer for my small unit T&T gaming.

Here a few WIP pics:

First off I scraped a bit of plastic without a bigger plan. Just going along as I build it.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS1_zps3023d51f.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS1_zps3023d51f.jpg.html')

Next was some heavy glueing....

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS2_zpsb228498d.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS2_zpsb228498d.jpg.html')

And after that...some more glueing.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS3_zps9435d5c1.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS3_zps9435d5c1.jpg.html')

I added some  Renedra fances for speed.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS4_zps4c3b3764.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS4_zps4c3b3764.jpg.html')

And added a few matches to get a little bit more live in the build...;)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS5_zps17648ff6.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS5_zps17648ff6.jpg.html')

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS6_zpsba3daed6.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS6_zpsba3daed6.jpg.html')

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS7_zps64e8cc58.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS7_zps64e8cc58.jpg.html')

Primed it heavyly in Black (here are the first steps).

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS8_zps34618d06.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS8_zps34618d06.jpg.html')

And a little bit of WIP painting..

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/TS9_zps55771d12.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/TS9_zps55771d12.jpg.html')

Lots of things to do, but I hope you get a first impression...:D

Cheers,
Don

Inspiring!

Especially like the idea of using renedra fences. I have been holding back on building a steamer because I couldn't find a good way of doing the fences.

Title: Re: T&T Colonial using small units
Post by: DonVoss on September 13, 2014, 06:24:41 PM
I managed to play another game of T&T-small units.

This game was more on the obscure side of colonial adventures: the courland colonisation of gambia in the late 1650s. Sorry, if this fits more in Pikes and fluffy shirts, please move it Björn.

Courland builded one or two forts at the gambia river but was attacked by the durch in 1659.
I would never have managed to build a proper foce for both sides, but with T&T small units I could it...:D

So here are a few pics of the game.

First the dutch. The uniforms are perhaps a bit late on them, but I am not to picky with that...;)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG1_zps200af4b8.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG1_zps200af4b8.jpg.html)

Captain van Tromp, hero
6 trained Pikemen, leader
3 veteran musketmen
3 trained musketmen
3 trained deckcrew

We palyed on a very small table 60cm x 120cm. With the dutch starting on the gambia to the right trying to wipe out the smaller courland troop.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG3_zps291abba7.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG3_zps291abba7.jpg.html)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG4_zpsa201902b.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG4_zpsa201902b.jpg.html)

But the gouvenor of the courland, Otto Stiel, is negotiating with King Kombo, chief of the local triebes.
So the warriors of King Kombo join in the fight.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG6_zpsea1cae6c.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG6_zpsea1cae6c.jpg.html)

In the mean time the courland pike are still in the camp. Getting their meal ready...:)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG5_zps5d76aa2d.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG5_zps5d76aa2d.jpg.html)

Over all it was a fun game wich took us just over an hour paly. Enough time for a good talk, some wine and pasta...

And here is the reason why it took me 2 weeks to get the thing on the net...:D

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/KiG2_zpsf4cf70fa.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/KiG2_zpsf4cf70fa.jpg.html)

Smart thinking!!

Give kitty something important to do, makes disturbing the gaming table less likely!!

A very interesting side of the colonial wars.

Is there any information on the forts themselves?

I use normal boards, gaming mats with big flock on it and lately a new version with limited flock. A kind of light weight version:

Okay, with the new Congo book out now I am kind off hooked in the heart of africa again.

And painted up some minis.

Here is a new faction for my ongoing multiplayer games...
...the crew of HMS Argus.

Again for T&T small units, pretty much as driscoles suggested it originally.

Captain Cutter, Hero
4 sailors, Trianed, inkl. Leader Mr. Barnes
3 sailors, trained
2 stokers (hope this is the right term), trained
Midshipman Fox

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/da13_zpszbfnjqxd.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/da13_zpszbfnjqxd.jpg.html)

I painted the sailors with different outfits, so one could tell them easier apart....;)

4, 5 or 6 years ?

Thanx, Björn.

We had a few losely narrative connected games in the last weeks with T&T small units. And they worked pretty well...lots of fun... :)

Just to give you folkes a few impressions, here are a few bits of the "campaign".

Map of the area, where the different factions are starting their adventure...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/K1_zpsf4cav0ae.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/K1_zpsf4cav0ae.jpg.html')

And a few game shots of the last weeks. Sorry no AAR.

First game we played. 4 players with one game master...
Over all goal was to get the old steamer working again to get upstream...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/da7_zps6u3vywjs.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/da7_zps6u3vywjs.jpg.html')

Second game, more or less the same scenario with different players. This time 3 players.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/d1_zpsdmyulg8m.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/d1_zpsdmyulg8m.jpg.html')

Different expeditions fight it out.

Lots of encounter markers are to be resolved.

In the end a lot of chaos from the encounter markers like wild animals and scavvy natives roam throu the expeditions. Great fun... 8)

And the game we played out tonight....

Players where asked to get in the great old wall in the middle of the table...while grabbing all kinds of gods, like ivory and crates.

Focus point was the great ancient wall...

They look brilliant. I am glad I could help you....but I feel guilty too....
For how many years Iam promising to write something official for T&T small units ?
4, 5 or 6 years ?

Sorry mate.

That really would tip me into wanting to try out the rules. Am a big fan of rules catering for relatively limited numbers of minis!

Argonnor !
Actually you can play the basic T&T rules with 13 miniatures.
Two units with 5 figures each, 1 Leader, 1 Hero, 1 sniper !
You can scratch the sniper and or the leader and game with 11 figs.
T&T is on the market for 9 years now. Do not wait and Card activation is popular at the moment  :)

Definitely makes it more interesting - I had the impression, T&T was more about large skirmishes with small armies.

I may get the rules somewhen this winter, then, as I feel an urge to get back into interwar/pulp/cthulhu/horror somewhen soonish.

EDIT:

Read the thread on the Colonial Supplement - just got another reason to have a look at the rules, as I am in the midst of a Victorian/Steampunk Colonial project (painting some Zulu for IHMN atm), and I actually haven't found the rules I want to use for larger engagements, yet...
