Post by: Paul @ Empress Miniatures on September 02, 2012, 04:54:34 PM
Hi All,

We have just started releasing a range for the ECW. The initial release is 24 packs but cavalry, personalities and more artillery will be added over the next two or three months.

Here are some tasters.

Nice work, they do look to bring something a little different to what has come before.  All the best with them

Oh, those look very nice.  They may even prompt a return to Hobs Hill when my bank account looks healthier.

Well, that was a surprise - for me anyway.
Dear God, the last thing I need is more ECW figures, but there are a few absolute pearls in amongst that lot. Gorgeous - although I do agree with James, a few of the arms look a wee bit stiff here and there. But overall, they look the business in spades. Well done Team-Empress.

Now, the vital question... How do they scale up with other manufacturers?
TAG / Perry sized, or Bicorne / Renegade sized?  :)

Nearer the larger end - not quite as big as Renegade, but not dwarfed by them either  :)

Very nice miniatures, well done Empress. I particularly like the assorted dress styles across the codes.

Cheers,

Very nice. Does this mean you were taking the piss about the Colonial Jazz Age range or is that still proceeding? Moderns getting any love in the foreseeable?

:o No not taking the thingy.

Jazz Age Imperialism is just beginning to be sculpted.

Moari Wars stuff being worked on.

Moderns will get some packs, hopefully before Christmas.

SCW/BCW will get a  some stuff as well.

More ECW due for release over the next two months.

Busy, busy, busy  ;)

Excellent news then. Any chance of some ECW types in shirtsleeves or ragged clothing. Sorry, it's an obligatory question for me, I'd like some for the almost contemporary Dutch-Portuguese conflict. I live in hope.  :)

Good idea,

Quite fancy doing some ragged figures to represent the likes of Essex Army at Lostwithiel  ;)

They can not be E.C.W. as I can not see Derick among them.

Beautiful figures.  Someone on TMP said the tassets were too long, but I disagree (maybe the poster didn't realise they hinge at the waist).

That suggests that the figures aren't based on re-enactors. Most of them don't hinge at the waist.  :D

Excellent models, best ECW I've seen for awhile.

I think its time to invest in a copy of Warlords Pike & Shotte!

First, i think great figures, best for a long time.
But I don't like companies, that release a "million" ranges, but no range nearly complete. It is like copplestone, where no range is complete and every new range kills my hope to get a complete range...
Please, make your other ranges complete...

I'll echo that last sentiment. Please can we have some Frontier Light Horse for the AZW & some Highlanders?

Different ranges, different sculptors though. Paul Hicks is a very busy and very popular chap these days, but the chances he'll get around to filling the gaps in the Zulu War range seem quite reasonable to me (says I who's not privy to Empress' ZW plans and release schedule  lol )

These ECW figures look fine indeed apart from a couple of slightly unnatural arm positions, but as I wrote on the Steve Dean forum, I didn't see that range coming. I appreciate the desire to do something that strays from the accepted view of what ECW fighting men looked like, but the fact remains that there are already about a dozen manufacturers already producing figures for that period, including some very fine sculpts. Not quite up to the saturation level of French Napoleonics but close enough IMHO ;)
Title: Re: New Empress Miniatures ECW range
Post by: Captain Blood on September 05, 2012, 08:31:13 AM
Nor the saturation levels of Waffen SS, fallschirmjaeger, vikings and now - bizarrely - woodland indians! ;)

My initial thought was the same as yours Arthur. Does the world really need another ECW range? (Although, is this, strictly speaking, not an ECW re-enactment range?  ;))

My second thought was - those look blooming lovely figures... I'll order a few packs because I want to paint them  :D

I suppose it goes to show that if the figures are good enough, there's always room for one more range in any market, however overcrowded it may already seem...

Except French Napoleonics obviously, where the saturation is of biblical flood proportions.

Then again, if you've a passion for something then it makes it easier to spend the countless hours required to produce and attempt to sell a range of figures ( I would imagine ...  :) ).

People's mileage will naturally vary on this depending on their commitment to ECW, but this world is still clearly wanting for a definitive range of zombie Viking fallschirmjägers  :D

It's the same with almost everything though, car manufacturers, food providers etc. If they are good enough (and they certainly are) people will buy them  :)

cheers

Nah, they are the exception to the rule, especially unbelievably tall ones. ;)

Sadly, they don't work for me as I prefer the "fuller" Bicorne/Redoubt/ Renegade look and these just look slimmer IMHO. They remind me of 1/72 figures, but just larger if you get my meaning. I for sure think they will find a market because they have their own stylish look which will appeal to many collectors, but just not to me is all.

If a company has a new look or has well done figures then there will always be a market. ;)

No worries Empress you have me hooked on your lovely Spanish Civil War range! :-* :-*

Ah, sorry boys, bit of an in-joke...

We discovered at GLAM in Kiel back in the Spring that Tobi (Green Knight here on LAF) had made some excellent and inexpensive samurai buildings, very.. erm.. closely modelled on Jimbibbly's own hand-tooled Oshiro Models range...

It was quite interesting watching James' face as he played a samurai game across terrain using cut-price copies of his own buildings :D
How we laughed...
(Actually he took it all in good part, and there were a few genuine Oshiro pieces on the table too :))

Anyway, I digress from the topic... Sorry Empress ladies. And Keith.

Going back to the figures... ;)

Really nice, I have seen a couple of these in the flesh (the drummer and officer based on me...  :D) and i like them a lot. A purchase will be coming up.
Really looking forward to the cavalry, I need lots!

Few ranges out there actually catch the right look of the ECW as we understand it now.  This is one of them, perhaps the first to really do so.  I have ordered and eagerly await arrival.

Sure they are not cheap, but when you have to pay Griffin's costs (you get what you pay for) It is a reasonable amount. Metal roughly £22 per kilo as well.

I speak from experience having used Griffins services, who are the best, it ain't cheap.

So good luck to this range, I'm hooked. :)

Beatiful figures.  Problem is that they are pretty expensive and up against the Warlord starter armies in plastic, which work out around 30p a foot figure, so can't justify it.

Now if you were to add more colonial stuff, like NWF, Indian Mutiny, Sikh Wars etc, that would open my wallet!

Well I've received my packs, and have to say they are superb  :)

A wee bit stiff in the arm in one or two poses, but I can overlook that because the fineness of the detail and casting is exemplary, and they simply ooze period authenticity.

And they're at the taller end too, so should fit very well with my extensive Bicorne / Renegade ECW collection. That said, they are defintiely not as chunky, so don't think they will be entirely incompatible with some of the slighter build ranges like TAG or the Perrys.

I can't wait to paint a few. if only I didn;t have about 150 other figures already in the queue...  ::)

Maybe an LPL entry or two though, next time round  ;)

Saw them at Colours at the weekend and the detailing is sublime, especially on the tassets  8)

As we've mentioned, some of the posing is a bit off but I would imagine that will change with the newer figures.

cheers
