This is part of a project I've started with a friend based around the Scottish campaigns in the English Civil War. I've decided to build the forces of that wily commander Montrose and my friend is building the Covenanter's.
My Montrose(ish) army isn't an attempt to exactly replicate what the forces of Montrose looked like, but rather a melding of Scottish and English together so I can use it as both a Scottish Royalist army and a Northern English Royalist army. I like the history of Montrose and Rupert so I'd like to use it for both. Basically it will be my own impression with quite a few liberties taken. Hopefully the end result will still be convincing enough to not totally offend the purists out there.
I'm starting off with a regiment from the rock hard Irish brigade in which I mixed Bicorne's Irish and English together which gives them a mixed and slightly ragged appearance (except the officers) which I feel they probably looked something like that. The Irish were noted for using a half pike, but I prefer the full pike and so went with that. They also wore a greyish top and white leggings(many did any ways) of which I included in the mix, but I changed the top to mostly green for two reasons. The first is I'll have plenty of grey to do when I do the regular Scot units and well......they are Irish and green just darn well belongs!:-)
The figures are from Bicorne and the English figures are simply superb(best ECW around IMHO) and the Irish figures are pretty good too if not quite as good as the English figures. I painted them using AP with highlights added. The Flag is from Flags of War and while it looks wonderful it's a little small for me, however I heard he's now making them bigger and so I probably replace it with a bigger one.
God save the king!

I have a vaguely similar idea for when I get to ECW. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks and interested in seeing what you come up with. :)

I am also working on a similar project.
another topic I will have to follow. ;)
are you planning some highlanders too?
-
Yes, I will have some highlanders, but just one or two units max as they really can only be used for when playing Montrose and not Rupert, because this army will like I said will be doing double duty as both a Scottish and northern English Royalist army. ;)

How do Christopher. Like your angle on the the northern campaigns. Two for the price of one. First Irish unit looks superb. The Trojans now live in Moscow I am informed, becoming well travelled. Cheers.
-
Thanks guys!
I'm well thank you and hopefully you are too. Moscow you say! Well that's a long way away from Greece and Turkey! I hope they are packed in fur as most only have a simple loin cloth! lol
Cheers

Some more Irish ready for battle!
Figures are Bicorne and flags are from Flags of War new larger ECW flags.
I'll be doing some Renegade and Redoubt figures for the Scots part of the Montrose army next.

I don't know anything about this period, but your figures and basing look awesome. Have fun using them in games. Thanks for sharing.

Ever seen a figure you had to have? Well this was one for me and it's from Redoubt miniatures. It shows what a commander is often doing and not always charging down the road.

I always thought that that was the most dangerous type of soldier - a British officer with a map....... lol
-
Rather nice he is :)
Must remember that Redoubt have a few gems in their vast, sprawling ECW range...
If only they used photos instead of those strange line drawings on their website, they might sell a few more figures!
-
Generally speaking I really do like Redoubt miniatures, but it is true you don't really know what your going to get until you get it! ::) :)

No pics at all of the Irish has always put me off.

Great unit, very well painted.
"I feel they probably looked something like that"
I don't think they did though. They would more likely have been very ragtag!
-
New unit!
Marching under the banner of "For God The King Against All traitors" over and "God Save The King" under comes Lord Huntley's Strathbogie Scots Royalist regiment supporting Montrose fight for the king's cause in Scotland during the ECW.

Just getting into this period and these are truly inspirational.
As far as Redoubt are concerned it might be worth a message or two to perhaps persuade Trevor to change his sketches for colour pics as I do know that he has an extensive selection of pro-painted models which are always on display at the shows and have encouraged me to spend a small fortune on his FIW range.
Cheers
