Title: Scratch built Triffids.
Post by: mattblackgod on September 16, 2012, 10:49:32 AM
Get yer hedge trimmers out....the TRIFFIDS ARE COMING!

I am slowly moving into a Retro (1980's) British Post Apocalypse setting borrowed from V_Lazy_Dragon on these pages. What British setting would be complete without giant carnivorous plants that moves about?? So I set about making my own versions of Triffids from scratch.

Made from plastic straws, cake candle holders, wire tie wraps for food bags, plastic bases and good old greenstuff putty! Simple, cheap n cheerful!

These would also fit in with the alien jungle table I am building for VSF and Sci Fi. I like hidden dangers to keep the game interesting.   lol

I just got caught up on the PA board, i was just about to say why didn't i see those over there. I now see them over there so you was being sneaky i see. :-)
These look wicked kool indeed. I like them a lot. Nothing like taking scrap junk and turning it into something productive.

I had asked over on the PA boards as well. Are there any WIP's out there to look at. To see the basics before you added paint or whatnot would be great to look over. :-)

Nice Triffids, by the way Matt, who makes that female miniature with the two pistols standing on the left of the last few photos you posted.

Thanks for the comments.

Grimmnar - I plan to do a tutorial to make these. The method is simple and it could be used for different types of plants.

Marauderman - she from the Girls with guns range (blister 4 or 5) from Amazon miniatures. I think they are OOP now.  :-[

Nicely done.  The use of cake candle holders as petals is inspired.

What fun!

Is the fallen tree trunk your own work, or a commercially available piece?

The fallen tree trunk is a resin piece but I forget who made it. It is part of a destroyed forest set. I think the company went under a couple of years back.   :'(

Thanks; what a shame, it's almost as nice a piece as your triffids!

likewise, even worse when I went to a hobby and model show at Wembley conference centre as a young nipper, walked round a corner into a lifesize fully working and MOVING triffid. Took off like a rocket and it took my dad over half an hour to catch up and find me  lol

Hello Matt

I do love a good killer plant film... and i have a soft spot for Trffids. Not alot of models around, When the WSD 2 pack is back in stock i like to buy some.

I was looking in my pet store at the plastic plants for fish and then of course i see your amazing work.

I like to try and have a go myself.. is it a bendy straw for the angel of the head..? and i think my second question Mark is about the petal.. it started off as a plastic cake one but what did you add to them please..?

But i do look forward to making my own soon..
Thanks for reading Matt

They are standard plastic bendy straws. Cut the straight bits and put over a old screwdriver. Use a lighter to melt one end (outside). You don't need much heat. Don't let the lighter get too close. One straw will make a few so you have time to experiment.

The petals are standard birthday cake candle holders. The straw should slide into where the candle sits. Trim the spike back. Wash all the plastic bits. Give all the bits that will need gluing a light sanding to help them stick.

Take a couple of wire food bag ties. Double over and then double over again. Twist up. Leave a few bits sticking out. These you can trim to look like leaves. Spread one end to make roots. Glue to a base (use hot glue as its may be easier than superglue). The other end super glue to the Spikey bit of the candle holder (against Hotglue may be a alternative). Bend the wires ties 90 degrees to make the flower head look outwards. Glue the straw into the candle holder.

Make some green stuff strands and use then to make roots and help hold the candle holders in place. GS paint was used to blend it all in but isn't necessary.

Simple. Honest. Post some pictures as I would love to see others work.

Hi Matt...

At last I have got my bad ties and the correct flower petals form ebay.... I also picked up some GW liquid green stuff i thought would cover the bad ties very well... just need some plastic bases and some standed green stuff, which i have not used before.

I brought some CP triffids, but its was around £22 for 6, so I hope my build go`s well.

Looking forward to finding out how they turn out....

Wish me luck

Love these guys!

Played a convention game with 15mm Triffids once. Can't remember where it was, Kelham Hall maybe. I don't remember much about the game other than it being difficult.

What rules were you thinking of using for this?

Cheers.

These look the business! They seem surprisingly easy to build too! How long did it take to make that batch pictured?
