Title: Medieval Battle Royale
Post by: Captain Blood on September 23, 2012, 12:36:30 PM
Here’s the battle that Silent Invader and I fought yesterday at Matakishi’s tea party.

Approximately 200 figures in total, all Perry wars of the roses, barring a few from Steel fist and Pro Gloria, depicting a fictional clash between powerful, rival noble forces from Essex (him) and Surrey (me).

York or lancaster? Who cares? This is regional Lordly rivalry, which is much more interesting  :)

The rules were Silent Invader’s own which we were playtesting. Two pages of A4. What’s not to like? They needed a bit of tweaking as we went along, but gave a most enjoyable and flavoursome game.

We’ll be launching these onto the market soon under the title ‘Dux Inarow’ and they will retail at £49.95 between hard covers with 800 pages of army lists and sumptuous photographs, as well as special laser etched dice (although we should point out that the rules themselves will still only run to two pages)  :D

But I digress…

General view of Silent Invader’s gorgeous table… A bucolic English country scene – the peace and tranquility of the grazing sheep and serried corn stooks about to shattered by the clash of steel and flow of English blood.

The forces of Surrey are aligned along the nearest baseline behind the wood; Essex at the far end behind the village. There are only two safe crossing points of the river, a timber bridge and a ford…

Sir Edward Mortimer of Rocheforde on the start line for Essex.

Henry Pierce of Hackneye holds the Essex centre.

The forces of Surrey on the start line, today under the overall command of Lord Lieutentant, Sir Robert Tenchley - whilst Sir Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, leads one banner in the field.

Skirting the treacherous marsh, Surrey rolls forward into the wood…

But wait. What are these on the left flank of Essex? Villainous foreigners, by God! Roger of Flanders and the Company of The Red Feather…

For Surrey, Sir Roger de Brassey’s mounted men at arms hasten to seize the bridge…

Before those dastardly mercenaries can get there… A local priest gives his blessing on their enterprise…

Possibly a bit late for prayer Father…

Alas, the Mercenaries, pikemen to the fore, have gained the bridge first…

Meanwhile, in the cornfield, Surrey’s archers prepare to unleash an opening salvo across the river…

A general view of the right flank, complete with the hovering hand of God…

The mercenaries hold the bridge…

De Brassey’s cavalry wisely veer off and hide behind the barn, letting their longbowmen handle the Company of the Red feather…

Meanwhile, for Essex, Henry Pierce of Hackneye’s small company have reached the north bank of the river… Will they risk wading across? If so, will they get swept away? One can but hope…

Surrey have brought up a brace of small field pieces, but are unable to get a clear shot as their own forces race ahead to the river…

The dash for the ford… Will Sir Thomas Howard’s company of mounted men at arms make it before the approaching horde of Mortimer of Rocheforde?

Surrey brings up mercenaries of its own to support its longbowmen in pouring fire into the enemy holding the bridge…

Bang! Sir Thomas Howard is across the ford and into the ranks of Mortimer of Rocheforde… And long and bloody attritional fight is about to ensue…

Having softened up the mercenaries on the bridge, Surrey’s archers stand aside to let the billmen through to engage in bloody melee…

While Surrey’s mercenaries move to pour fire into the company of Henry Pierce on the opposite bank…

Surrey’s men at arms on foot eventually reach the ford and surge across, just as Essex throws caution to the winds and start wading across the river all along its length…

Suddenly the river is awash with struggling knots of men, the din of battle, and blood in the water…

Pierce of Hackneye actually manages to dash across the river to surprise Sir Robert Tenchley… A pivotal moment of high drama!

But elsewhere, the tide of battle has swung decisively in favour of Surrey. As De Brassey’s cavalry ford the river and sweep around behind the defenders, the surviving mercenaries of the Red Feather are penned back into the bridge house by Surrey bills…

De Brassey sweeps past the alarmingly huge pile of Essex dead off-table…

Whilst Tenchley sees off the assault of Pierce of Hackneye and drives his forces fleeing back across the river…

And so the end game is reached, as the Essex commander makes his last stand…

A hard fought but ultimately decisive victory for Surrey…

Finis.

I was fortunate to be present at the tea party and this was every bit as gorgeous in the flesh. :-*
The whole set up was delightful. I am particularly taken with the buildings, especially the scratch built, yes, scratch built church, it's not a resin model you know. ;) :)

Brilliant stuff :-* ;D

Three cheers for Silent Invader and the Captain!

Just one question. Did the cow that wandered into the middle of the battle survive?

Poor thing...  :'(

Thanks David. That's almost a proper wargame, isn't it?  ;)

The credit really belongs to Steve aka Silent Invader, since the rules, scratchbuilt terrain and buildings, and half the figures are all his  :)

Thanks Richard for the photography and posting this up and of course for the game. Thanks to Matakishi for hosting us.    :)

I should also mention that there a couple of Jimbibbly's buildings in there as well plus some of Richard's hedges, while we both made changes to improve the rules as we went along.

The game took about 4-5 hours of leisurely play with, I think, four decisive events:

1) My slow deployment as my mobs threaded their way through the village and ponds

2) Richard's heavy cavalry slamming across the ford with these six heroic MAA fighting on a narrow front to bring my biggest unit to a standstill with one of it's flanks then diminished by cannon fire

3) My pikemen who held the bridge succombing to arrows and bolts

4) My failed attempt to take out Richard's commander, which resulted in the death of my knight and the breaking of his warband

Well done Richard  :D.  (Harrumph!  :'( ;). )

Up to my elbows in poop, most likely...

The Bishop of Carlisle's retinue could have arrived in the nick of time to save the day for Essex  ;)

Mate, the Bishop's bodyguard comprises about 1/10th of the current Muster of Cumberland. Unfortunately it's also the only bit that's painted...  :'(

One of these days I'd love to try the flower of the north against you effete swine from Surrey and Essex! If I start painting now, maybe I'll make it to BLAM 2015.

Thank you chaps. There will be a rematch of sorts in a few weeks time...  :)
(Possibly with even more figures though - I have quite a few more I didn't use. Would like to get the whole lot onto the tabletop... ;))

Wish I could see that first page! For some reason the photos barely load for me.  :'(

Sorry, they are quite large files. I think the pictures are so heavy with detail, that even when I shrunk them down to 800 pixels wide, some of them were still coming up larger than 500kb, which is why some of them are only 700 pixels wide! Couldn't seem to get these down in size any other way, and I'm usually a dab hand at resizing photos...  :(
So yes, unless you're on a reasonable speed broadband connection, they would probably take a while to load up...  :?

I'm going to be looking at an assembly and painting schedule for the next few weeks that - hopefully - will enable me to field say another 30 infantry and maybe 20 horse - I'll have a better idea in the next few days.  Also, I think I will be able to manage another two tiles with sloping hills.  Let's say that I am enthused.  I also have thoughts on a rules mod to speed up melee, which I'll jot down next week.  ;) :D

Oooh lovely  :)
I have a bloody great painting pile to do myself... Including my new longbowmen, the MMAA i have yet to paint, plus assorted artillerymen and men at arms on foot i've had hanging around for months, primed... So all in all i have about 40 foot figures and 8 or 9 mounted to paint...  :(
I might go mad and do the whole lot as one giant batch!
Expect to see me surface in about 6 weeks time!  lol

A tasteless sweater with clouds and hills in the design is not 'a scenic backdrop'  ::)

Captain Blood said: "We’ll be launching these onto the market soon under the title ‘Dux Inarow’ and they will retail at £49.95 between hard covers with 800 pages of army lists and sumptuous photographs, as well as special laser etched dice (although we should point out that the rules themselves will still only run to two pages)"

The scary part is I would actually consider buying these if filled with pics of your minis/games.

Always a pleasure seeing your work.

Will we be able to get our grubby little fingers on these rules at some point?  The size of your battle is exactly what I am looking to game (large skirmish), and looks lovely to boot!  :)

I expect Silent Invader might make his patent rules available at some point...  ;)
Just need to work out how to expand them from 2 brilliant pages into 100 pages of padding, photographs, waffle and bullshit to justify a properly exhorbitant price tag  :D

(Sorry, as you can probably tell, I have something of a downer on the current trend for profiteering from big fat glossy rulebooks!  :))

Thanks to all for the comments. Rematch in a few weeks!

I would really welcome a set of rules that fits onto two pages.

It would mean that you could actually play a game rather than
a) feel like you are revising for an examination.
b) spend hours preparing the game by bookmarking pages
c) spend half of the game trying to find that special rule clarification that you are sure that you saw somewhere.

Thanks for the interest in the rules.   :)

This was the first time they had been played and were tweaked as we went along plus a few more tweaks soon to be made.

No doubt will make them available* after the next battle royale, which should include some cavalry on cavalry action, which is something we didn't get to test before.

 :D

*That's the two page b&w PDF for free, rather than the full colour coffee table edition with swoon-worthy photography!  lol

Will there be a limited edition free figure available only with the full colour set?

Can I do the army lists? I'm sure about five volumes should take us from the start of the Wars up to around tea time on the day of St.Albans in 1455. If they sell like hot cakes, I'd be prepared to do another five books to take it into the day after.

Nah!  They'll be a free download after I've made couple of tweaks following yesterday's Battle Royale II (more board, more terrain, more minis!).  ;)

Report will follow in a few days once I've processed all the photos, and worked out how to reduce them down in size, as my photo editing package seems to have thrown a wobbly and is leaving resized pics at more than 500kb, even when I reduce them down to 1 pixel in size!  :(

Hi Richard..... if you edit an image down and save it but the KB size is unchanged, try opening the image using MS Paint and then selecting save again........  I've had this reduce an image's KB size by 90%.  There's the hassle of an extra step but it might be worth it.

Well, that works  :o
Thanks Steve - what a useful tip!
Don't really understand the vagaries of resizing pics - there seems little rhyme or reason to it. Still, I should now be able to get the pics of Sunday's battle up tonight  :)

I discovered it by chance - back in the day of dial-up Internet, when it really did pay to have the kb size as small as poss!  ;D

How many figs were used, And what was the average unit size?

There were about 200 in this battle (increasing to 300 in the next: see the Redux thread).

Unit size ranged from less than ten to 46. I'm going to post the actual unit sizes (at least for my forces as I don't know Captain Blood's - he was too busy killing mine for me to count!) in the rules discussion thread:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=48144.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=48144.0)

Will be adding to that thread later today.  :)

You've been missing your orgasms...  ;)

It's been here for the last three weeks: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=47708.0  :)

I fear it will be some time before Steve and I get together for # III - we have more forces to build and paint! lol
