Title: Salamander space marines
Post by: voltan on October 01, 2012, 01:41:07 PM
Old school womble painting, the start of yet another project, but this one should last a bit longer as it's part of a group of friends building armies up.

I've got another 15-ish beakies to paint aswell as two rhinos and a predator, along with anything else I end up panic buying ;)

Very, very cool. I've always had a soft spot for Space Marines from this era. The rank insignia are from the little red booklet, aren't they? That little thing was as a bible to me back in the day and I still treasure it. Good to see you've used the original Salamanders scheme of a very dark green. Later, the Dark Angels usurped that colour of course, when they dropped their original black scheme.

In fact, I've built an Imperial Fists army, with miniatures just from the late eighties and early nineties (up to 1992) and the markings from my little red bible.

But if you really want to do that awesome Tarantula and those Beakies justice, you should have used one of the old Dreadnoughts. You know; the Furibundus pattern (or that other one known as an 'Eddie') ;)

I'll be watching this thread; very cool indeed 8)

+++EDIT+++ Edited out the many, galling spelling errors. Must have been the enthousiasm. yeah; that's it... ::)

yup, using the little red book, always wanted to paint a salmanders force using this scheme since I got it and only reacently thought I could actually pull it off.

As for the dread, I had it already and that's why it got added  :) Though it'd be good to just use the classics I doubt I could afford it or have the time to hunt them down.

Very nice! I too have a soft spot for the old beakies from 1st edition and have a bunch in the painting queue myself.

Here is a silly question, but one that gives me serious trouble on account of color-blindness (color-insensitivity is really more appropriate)-what color is the basecoat? :) :) :)

The base is coat d arms panzer grey and it's mixed with coat d arms US dark green for the layers up to pure dark green for the highlights.

Man, those are great.  Those were the models when I first got into WH40K as a kid.  I miss Mk-6's etc.

Gotta love the old beakies! Love the Tarantula weapons mount too, I'd beat up several close relatives for one of those.

If you keep an eye on e-bay you can sometimes get a bargain, I've 'accidentally' won another for under a fiver including postage.

Lucky Git.... :D

I have entertained the option of using the plastic Space Crusade ones in the past, but since then, I've acquired some of the old metal ones, so it's a non-issue for me now.

Still; those SC Tarantula's are dirt cheap, and whilst the aesthetics are somewhat different from the RT/40K look, they're not that far off and actually look pretty good...

If I was not broke, and I didn't hate most resin models (for gaming), I'd be damn tempted to start investing in the gorgeous Horus Heresy line from Forgeworld...and then go back, and dig up 2nd edition rules for 40K.

I have got a couple of those old plastic beakies and perhaps a few sprues with bits on. They are unpainted- which is odd because I have had them for 25+ years. I guess if I havn't painted them in that time I probably never will. PM Me if you are interested and I will pop them in the post.

Finally managed to paint something else for this, I hate xmas, the photo makes it look a bit lighter than it is, but I'm too lazy to get a better one. ;)
I got some more figures and vehicles undercoated today so hopefully I'll get moving again.
As a bit of history, I bought this rhino nearly twenty-ish years ago at the Harrow games workshop and when stripping it back to the plastic, there was at least 5 previous paintjobs  ;D

@Rob
Sorry, never saw your post, are the bits still available?

Nice.

I've still got the old space marine paint set and several pots of that old Schooll green black salamanders colour, those old beakies bring back plenty of memories.

Cheers for sharing.
