Title: Pulp African Hut
Post by: marianas_gamer on October 07, 2012, 12:26:38 PM
Since I'm I am going to run several scenarios in my Pulp game in Africa I decided that I better have some dedicated terrain features.  The first piece that I am planning is a large hut.  Now right off the bat I want to emphasize that this is for a Pulp game and is not historically based like some of the beautiful work that I have seen from people like Plynkes.  Like much of my terrain features I am basing it on a cork topped coaster that I purchased at Home Depot.  The posts are chop sticks that I bought when a local Chinese store went out of business.  I plan on using the carved ends of these chop sticks for future projects as well.  The walls are made from a woven plastic and fiber place mat that I *acquired* (ahem) from one of the local places that we have brunch on Sunday, much to my wife's chagrin  o_o (I tipped extra I swear  ;D)

Here are the posts cut to length and a few in place

Here is the entire interior framework finished.

Here is where I am to this evening with the wall starting to be glued to the structure.

I am planning to finish with a thatched top using the towel technique that was recently laid out on the LAF workbench section.

Curious to see it painted!

It looks great so far, and well spotted.
The sign of a good scratchbuilder is finding objects that would of much better use on the gaming table than their original designer intended.

Well done!
 ;)

Your a worse klepto than my mother, if you took her anywhere near a pub she'd fill her handbag with glasses.  :o

It does look good Lon, so it was probably worth the risk to your good name  ;)

Well, I finally got some time to work on the hut again.  The walls are up and I have scratch built the door from some split bamboo from a sushi mat.  The undercoating has been particularly hard because we have had weeks of rain as two typhoons set up over us and dragged in feeder bands of rain.
Here is the undercoated hut
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC00438.jpg)
Here is the door
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC00437.jpg)
I plan on attaching a bracket so that the door is free standing and so can be removed to indicate whether it is open or closed.

Great work with those "lifted" mats.

Waiting to see the end product.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the nice comments fellows.  After a long day of meetings about fuel pipelines and "pigging" (don't ask) I felt the need to retreat to the more genial landscapes of Pulp canibals.  So here is the hut with the first coat of paint on the base, posts and walls.
and here is a shot of the interior
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC00440_zpsc54c9e73.jpg)
Here it is with second coat on the walls
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC00441_zps593806fc.jpg)
And again an interior
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC00442_zps803c80a5.jpg)
Hmm.. I see that those interiors are pretty damn dark.  I'll try to get some better pictures under natural light. I am really liking the texture of the mat as the paints are going on

That's looking good  8)

Might I suggest you make the entrance a bit more ragged so it looks less like its been cut with a knife/scissors etc.

cheers

This mat is great (as is your hut so far) , you could also use it for fences... i'd go there for brunch again...  ;)

I had some time this weekend to work on some gaming stuff so I decided I better raise the roof on this hut.  I had seen this tutorial http://ryan.skow.org/city/greentree/ThatchedRoof.html  posted here previously and decided to try the towel method of thatching.  This is my first attempt at this and so far it is going pretty smoothly.  The first thing that I had to do was make the underpinning of the roof. This was done using a conical frame from card that was reinforced with a circular base of foamcore. Here is the card cone before it was glued.
and here it is pinned and gluing (the schmutz is because I was undercoating some jungle trees at the same time and the spray paint got all over my clumsy fingers - no alcohol was involved - I swear  lol lol)
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC02955.jpg) Here is the base being glued to the cone. the cone is in one bowl with another smaller bowl on the base to force it down into the cone.
This provided a surprisingly sturdy construction. I then started to glue and pin strips of towel to thatch the roof.  (http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC02959.jpg)
So here is how the hut looks now with door undercoated and propped in place.  I hope that this addresses your comment Jim. (http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC02963.jpg)  and here it is with some minis for scale. (http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/DSC02964.jpg) Next I hope to get some more work done on the roof and finish up the door.  Then some interior work and the basing.

Thanks all. Eric, I am only planning to do the one at this point but I probably will bash up an elevated grannery as well.

This looks great...from personal experience you always need more than one ! Can I suggest you start on the other 3-4 you will need now for your village and 'cut the corners'.

Eric,  you are a very bad influence  lol lol
Here are the latest upgrades.  I coated the roof with PVA and then put three coats of paint on.
Then, I painted the base of the hut.
Here is what the hut looks like now.
All that is left is finishing the door, working on an interior fire pit, and gluing the static grass on the base.

Had a nice long weekend so I started an elevated grannery to go along with the hut.  It really isn't quite as crooked as the photo makes it look, I swear  lol

I'm hoping top work some more on the hut but expect to be dragged off for a day at the beach.

Oh, how terrible , I hope my sincere sympathy comes across as I watch the cold rain drizzle from a murky London sky  ;)

Looks good Lon, did you have to go and rob another restaurant or did you have some matting left over?  lol

Chris,
When I set out to do something I try and do it properly.  I snagged two of the mats.  My wife was well and truly mortified to find it in her purse for the *second* time when we made it home from brunch  lol lol.  So far I have only used up about 1/2 of one of them.

Excellent forward planning Lon, you should be able to get a reasonable village going before you have to go a'plundering again  lol

Ged, Malamute and me are going out for a Thai in a couple of weeks, I'll be sure and wear my shoplifting coat  ;)

Malamute,
No I'm actually a pretty law abiding citizen...but those matts were way too tempting  :D ;D
Here is a  view of the pretty much finished hut and grannery.

and another

Now I have to figure out what is attracting my Pulp adventurers...Hmm, I may have to figure out how to model a diamond mine now.

Looks great - but I still think the 'village' needs a few more dwellings ;)
