Painted these up for myself over the past couple of weeks. Had them since I was a teenager and they got stripped years ago with the intention of doing a better job of them. Got quite a few others as well so I might add a few more to them to create a little warband (not that they'll ever see action though).

Brilliant figures. And and amazing paintjob you put on them! :-*
-
I agree. Really nice paintjob. And great miniatures. I hope to see more of them... ;)
-
In my top five favorite figures, simple, well posed and you've done a cracking job on them :-* :-*
cheers
James

Superb brushwork on some classic minis.

Definately agree there. I think that's what attracted me to them back in early '90 something.
By the way, does anyone know if Foundry's HYW stuff is the same size as these? I'm guessing they are as they're Perry sculpts as well and I think I recognise a few Bretonnian bits used as dollies (a few knights legs here and there) but I'm not 100% sure.
-
Amazing! Your painting is so great!
-
Your brushwork is BRILLIANT..very nice bases also. I love way you did the wood on the shield. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Great paintjob. Wery crisp and with nice color tones.

I believe they are a decent match with the Citadel ones being ever so slightly larger it not worryingly so.

Might order a pack then and see how they look. Cheers :D
Thanks for the comments everyone.

Those are really lovely. Great colour tones :-*

Mein Gott! Those metals...! :-* :-* :-*

Simply gorgeous brushwork!

They are some great, classic sculpts.
Please, Sir, paint some more.

Although my photography skills are more down to luck and chance. lol
The reds differ a little between the two models but here's the recipe for the blue and red knight.
Base coat GW old Mechrite Red, initial highlights done by adding VGC Bloody Red and light highlights by then adding GW old Dheneb Stone. Just need to be careful to not over do the light highlights otherwise the whole area ends up pink rather than red. I don't know what the current GW equivalents are like in comparison to the old foundation range but if I were to replace them with Vallejo I'd suggest VGC Scarlet Red and VMC Stone Grey (Vallejo's Opaque range is hugely disappointing as far as colour matching goes with the Foundation stuff!).
The armour recipe probably sounds more complicated than it is. I used a base mix of VMA Steel, VMC USA Olive Drab and a bit of black. That was then just highlighted by adding more VMA Steel. I used a number of washes though over that. I treated it like I would if I were painting grimey, dirty armour but didn't take it that far. I use different combinations of VGC Charred Brown, Imperial Blue and Cobra Leather which when mixed give purplish and greenish browns. I thin them down and wash the armour but wipe away excess from the main surfaces. Afterwards a quick glaze of black/brown wash (I use the old GW washes) helps add extra shading. I then went back and picked out the lightest highlights with VMA Steel again. A bit convoluted perhaps but it's really not as much messing around as it sounds. Honest. ;)

Fantastic!

- D'oh! I forgot my shield!
- Hang on, I'll get it.

Stunning as always!

Working on a third knight now. These are a joy to paint with them being nice simple models. Good to relax with after painting more complex pieces during the week. Might have this almost finished tomorrow. The only pain in the arse is the shield which being the old sort has a bloody great hole through the middle which will need filling and sanding once it's fitted.

Looking good dude! How do you get the edges of that red stripe so perfect and even? You must have a steady hand.

I pencil it in to give me a guide, which helps a lot.

BEAUTIFUL paint job! :o :-*
Please keep the great work ( and post pics for us to drool over).
Thanks for sharing.

The metal is simply fantastic! Could you quickly explain how you paint such nice contrast on the armour parts?
Thanks!
-
Cheers chaps :)
The metal is simply fantastic! Could you quickly explain how you paint such nice contrast on the armour parts?
Thanks!
The colour recipe is a few posts up ;)
But it's just simple layering and washes. This came together pretty quickly to be honest so I think I'll stick with this way of painting metallics for a while. I think adding the olive drab to the base coat and using the colour paint washes is what is helping to get that contrast. The next one I paint I'll try and remember to take stage by stage photos.
-
These are fantastic!
I am definitely going to have to try that metallic technique. Thanks for posting it.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Ugh... mastic.

I've just realised I've painted the gauntlets on these wrong! After all these years I've only just noticed that the back of the hand and wrist is also armoured. You were all just too nice to point it out weren't you? ;)
Oh well it's a quick fix.
-
It seemed churlish to mention the gauntlets when the figures (including the new one) were so beautifully painted. ;)
Also, some gauntlets did have cloth or velvet covering on the hand and wrist bits (technical term escapes me at the moment), often red, green, blue or purple.
-
I love how you paint your miniatures. The colors you use are spot-on and the blending is seamless. I also love how you paint your metals. Over-all, nice crisp paintwork!
Excellent job.
-
Gorgeous! I'm rather envious on you, both for owning these models and painting them to a very high standard. :o
Actually, I'm hoping for the new management at Foundry's to discover the moulds for these in their pile sometime soon…
-
And he's done!
I've got another two knights prepped and ready to go so I'll work through those when I can and then I might look at doing some retainers. Got archers, crossbowmen and a small selection of retainers with various weapons (there's a cannon and crew too but that's not really warband fodder - yet) to pick from. Picked up a pack of Foundry HYW civvies that are a good match for baggage train types as well. I'm holding off on doing mounted knights and yeomen as they're a bit more time consuming.
-
:o
Stunning!
Bloody gorgeous, too!
:-*
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the band...
-
Finally managed to finish another knight.
The ermine are decals so I can't take any credit for those unless you count how much faffing around they took lol
(http://stonecoldlead.webs.com/photos/undefined/bretonnian%20knight%20greatsword%20montage%20small.JPG)
-
Were they individual stickers? or a sheet for each "square"? I know decals can be a pain in the ass!
Blue
-

Blue
I printed out a strip and managed to apply them as such on one quarter but the other quarters all needed them to be put on individually. A lot of faffing around but it worked out alright in the end.
-
Another wonderful addition to the warband.
:-*
And extra kudos for having the patience to arse around with the decals.
;)
-
"Faffing" counts; I'd never have the patience or dexterity to apply teensy little decals like that. The quality of your brushwork & basing are also REMARKABLE...WONDERFULLY WELL DONE!
-
Yep, but the missus aint going to be happy about the flowerbed he's stepped on ;)
As said elsewhere - lovely work 8)
-
Proper tasty.
-
Been a while since I posted anything in this thread but I recently finished off another knight. He'd been sitting on my desk half painted since last year so I finally got my finger out and finished him off. Here's a group shot of all five models so far. I'll post a few more pics of the new guy later (he's the Mr fancy pants with the the blue and white lozenge heraldry) when I've got a little more time to faff about with them.
-
Spectacular! They look great all lined up like that. Now they need some comical Orcs from the mid-80s to fight!
-
Sweet!! :-* Cracking as always!!
-
Another stunning miniature!! that group is one of the best I have seen!! :o :o
-
Faffing about is good :) Lovely work :-* :-* :-*

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Here are better pics of the new knight.

THAT IS BOSS!!!!!!!! :o :-*
I love your weathering and shield damage. I keep forgetting to try that in my excitement to undercoat models so i have something to paint ;) Next time.... :(
What is your 'dust' recipe for the bottom of the shield? Dry brush? Splatter? Chalk?

The grimey bit is a wash, or couple of washes. Just some GW Agrax Earthshade, a spot of Nuln Oil and a spot of VMC USA Olive Drab to make a murky wash. I sometimes add other colours but that's the simple recipe. Just wash and stipple the paint onto the lower portion of the shield and build up layers to increase the strength of the colour. You can use a thicker wash (by adding more paint or just using dilute paints instead of GW washes) to give a more grimey effect. The important thing is to avoid leaving a tide mark when the wash dries.
Something else that would be easier to demonstrate if I had a camcorder. ;)
-
I have no words, amazing.
:o

Wow, stippling! Thanks for the answer. I had never thought of using that water colour technique before on minis. Now to try that myself! Thanks!
-
Beautiful & amazing paintjob! Simply wonderful to watch :-*
-
Wonderful ! :-* :-* :-*
-
I've started to do a few retainers to go with the knights. Thought I'd kick off with some double handed weapon sorts as I knew what colour scheme I wanted for them (based on an old colour scheme I used on a knight casualty back when I was a teen). One down, one underway and three more sitting on the desk... famous last words?!
Nice and easy to paint up though so I may well stick to the plan. Might be time to rename this thread.
-
Those are awesome...
:-*
-
Very nice, a joy to look at and definitely an inspiration.
-
Top notch painting :o
-
really great painting! and some of the best brettonian figures GW ever made
-
Amazing, absolutely amazing painting, I can not imagine the amount of time it took to paint all those blue diamonds on the knights tunic! I love your painting style, very inspirational (meaning I aspire to one day paint as well as you).
Cheers,
Damien
-
I finished off the second axeman and I've started another from this little unit.
If I can keep on track with things I'll do the remaining two retainers I have with doublehanded weapons.
It seems there are another 4 such models which I'd like to get hold of. There are links on my blog and details of what I'm after.

-
Nice work, SCL.
I love your work with muted colours.
Just sublime.
:-*
Good luck on the search for the other four fellas.
Have you considered putting an advert in the 'Wanted' section of the Bazaar?
I am sure that someone could help.
:D
-
This is making me sweat with anxiety. Lookit the shading on that gambeson! Not just brilliantly blended highlighting but brilliantly placed too.
The axeman's not bad either. ;) Likin' that green, a lot.
-
Ooo :-* :-*
cheers
James

I hadn't noticed the shading at all, my eyes just told me it was correct! Lovely bretonnians :-* :-*

Not only are those bretonnians fantastic but those Sinbad minis are out of this world good.
Cheers,
Damien

Hi, just stumbled over this thread. Those are gorgeous figures, the paint job absolutely brilliant.
Keep on, I will try to follow the progress.

Truuuuly amazing work on those minis :o
-
I am delighted to see you are getting carried away with The Project. These are some of the FINEST Flowers of Chivalry I have seen. The Big Three of brushwork, basing, & color choices are TERRIFIC! FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!
-
With all my 'on the fly' pics I think it's time we had a 'proper' photo of some finished models so here's the most recently finished retainer along with the other two from his rather meagre unit.
I also put together a little tutorial on my basing. It's nothing out of the ordinary but a fellow blogger asked and I thought it was time to do something. It's on my website HERE (http://stonecoldlead.webs.com/tutorials.htm).
-
Beautiful! :-* So much detail - even stubble!
I like the flowers you used on the base - where are they from?
-
Love these guys! My favourite has to be the guy in the middle though (shit they are all amazing) :-*
I hope you have tons more to paint, I can never get tired of seeing these knights.
Cheers,
Damien

Excellent painting!!! Beautiful figures. You have a talent!!! :-*

Thanks! :) I've got some Mininatur ones but might have a look and see if Silflor has some different ones :D

Love your paintjob ! something simple but excellent !!
A LITTLE QUESTION : HOW DO YOU MAKE THE FLESH (colors etc) ???
-
(http://webzoom.freewebs.com/stonecoldlead/photos/undefined/bretonnian%20knight%20with%20great%20helm.jpg)
I just saw this knight ... AMAZING! He's definitely my favourite :-*

I am glad you have a lot more to do, everyone loves your paint jobs.
Damien

Thanks! :) I've got some Mininatur ones but might have a look and see if Silflor has some different ones :D
Those are the same tufts...I think that mininatur is the brand and silflor is the range....or vice versa...:)

If you're UK based then Antenocitis Workshop (http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/wargames-bases-basing/mininatur-silflor.html) carries a pretty full range, although they don't always maintain a full stock. It sells out pretty quickly.
It's also the same stuff sold by Army Painter (I think it's AP anyway), just rebranded and allegedly with a higher price tag.

Oops... I'm a bit tired. ;)
Base colour is VMC Tan Earth with a little VGC Beasty Brown. Then highlight with more Tan Earth and then add VGC Bonewhite followed by a little white for those lighter areas. A glaze of GW old Ogryn Flesh wash and Agrax Earthshade wash at the end helps tie all the highlights together.
:)
-
a big thank !!

Hi SCL,
I'm in Australia, so online is looking to be the way to go! In January they usually have some of the range at Cancon, but not a much as they have in the catalogue. We picked up some ivy this year, which looks great. Might take a peek at the catalogue and see what else that company stocks and see if I can get my hands on some ;)
And thanks for posting up the skin colours - I'm sure everyone appreciates it ... your paint jobs are lovely!
Cheers,
PP.
-
Thanks again PP :)
I found a pack of the ivy in the back of the drawer at the weekend. Something I bought years ago and just never got around to using.
-
Painting Princess I asked the same question as a Pacifically challenged hobbyist. lol The answer for your Silfor product desires is this company based in St Peters, Sydney.

Thanks for checking out my thread :)

A couple of additional retainers done, well, almost. I wish I had more to show in my updates on this project but if I waited until I had a good sized bunch of models to show I'd be doing an annual update! lol
Anyway, these two models are the last of my doublehanded weapon guys. I do have a couple of models I'll add to the 'unit' but they're just sword armed retainers.

There are more ramblings and wot-not over on my blog (http://stonecoldlead.blogspot.co.uk/).

As sweet as ever Mr Lead!! :o :o

Another two impressive painting jobs!! :o :o :-*

Loving your paint jobs and all these classic knights! The knight with the spear(?) is my favourite so far.

I was trying to look for the words... and there they are. Your works look so natural and beautiful! :o
-
Cheers all :)
I'm very tempted to actually build up some small units from these various models, say aim for 10 infantry to each one. I'd want some movement trays then though. I'm still holding off on attempting any cavalry partly because they'll be more time consuming but also I'm not sure how I want to base them. Regular rectangular bases look a bit crappy next to the round infantry bases but the larger round bases I have are a just a touch too small (aesthetically more than practically), plus they have much wider footprint which might cause problems if I were to ever game with them. I have experimented with making a rounded end rectangular base which looks a bit better but I'm still more drawn to a round base. I dunno... decisions, decisions....
-
Very nice! :-*

Haha the periodic updates are nice, even if they are small bunches. Always nice to see your paint jobs :)
-
Love what you've done with some classic figures. :)
I'd be tempted to go with 40mm rounds for cavalry. It's what I tend to use for my skirmish figures.

Brilliant painting!

:-* beautiful!
I know it has a name but... A plank with a rusty nail. The ultimate weapon!

I'm digging this corpse of a thread up to try and keep my Bretonnians in one place. It's been a while since I've had anything new to add although I've probably forgotten to post pics of some of my knights over the many months. Anyway, apart from my Bretonnian brigand warband I've also had a these foot knights on the go and the intention was to aim for a ten man unit. Eight knights have been finished and gathering dust for a while but I wanted to add suitable command models as well. Got myself a nice 5th edition musician, started it, almost finished it, left it to gather dust out of frustration at not being able to paint the heraldry well enough. Lots of waffle on my blog about it but I've gone for homemade decals and over painted them. Just need to do the standard bearer now.

Has it nearly been two years?! I'm getting old - but that guy is looking fresh. Nice one.
-
That's a lovely herald... :-* :-*
Your paintjobs are a joy to look at, so smooth and clean!
-
That chap is superb! 8) 8) 8)

Wonderful!

And good to know that you are mortal after all.
Trouble with the freehand?
I feel so much better now.

Freehand is very hit and miss for me. If you want stripes painting, I'm your man! Anything else and I'll probably just end up in the foetal position under my desk.

Hey, I know that position... It gets me through some days at work...and batch painting. :'(
-
Based up the musician and here he is with the rest of the unit. Just the standard bearer to do (working on it now!).

They look stunning :-* :-* :-*

They do indeed.

That is another thing that I wont bother trying to paint now.....
Thank you!
>:D
;)

Wow! I can't get over the depth of color on those coats-of-arms!
Awesome looking unit,
Jevenkah
-
Very gorgeous. I don't think you need worry too much about your freehand... ;)
-
Incredible, really! Your painting is among the best I have ever seen, and these are the ideal models to show off that fact!
-
Damn, that's lovely work.
-
WOW!! :o :o :o :o
Do you actually play wargames as well as paint?
-
WOW!! :o :o :o :o
Do you actually play wargames as well as paint?
I wish. Although even if I did, no chance of using these with most Warhammer players as I've used the wrong bases. ;) It would be nice one day though to get them on the table and rattle some dice.
Thanks for the comments everyone. :)
-
I've used the wrong bases. ;)
They look just fine to me... lol
Besides, there's no such thing as the wrong bases, just the wrong game. ;)

The Knightly Lads are GLORIOUS creations. INCREDIBLY WELL DONE!

Besides, there's no such thing as the wrong bases, just the wrong game. ;)

:o :-* :o o_o Individually they are very impressive...as a group they are Mind Blowing! o_o
Really some of the best painting I could ever hope to see...and on some of my favorite minis ever! Well done!

I'm painting up a standard bearer for my unit of foot knights. I finished the shield off today and now need to make a banner... this could take a while.

As a dane, I strongly applaud this guys choice of heraldry lol
I've been following this warbands progression for a while, and its nice to see it all coming together. I especially enjoy how damn sharp you manage to get your miniatures.
Good stuff
