Title: Space guys (Painted squads page 15)
Post by: PF on October 27, 2012, 08:38:00 AM
Hello,

Here's a project I am working on those days:

http://15mmspaceopera.blogspot.fr/search/label/New%20federation%20project

Thank you for watching and letting me know what you think.

Great looking aliens (and human troopers).  :o You usually do 15mm figures, but these are 28mm, right?

Exquisite sculpts! Very unique and creative. They look like they would scale perfectly with Infinity models.

I've also loved your stuff, so it's great to see you here too. I really like the work you're doing at the moment, is it for anyone in particular or just for your own amusement?

Predatorpt: Yes they are.

Dijit: I do them mostly for my own amusement but I wouldn't mind selling them if I got an offer. Sure thing they'll be cast so I can have a few squads for my games.

Why don't you try to do your own miniatures line? Maybe do a kickstarter/indiegogo campaign to launch it? I think I'm not the only one who would like to field a force of different alien races - a true Alien Legion ;)

They are good, very good, but... "something" about the body/suit strikes me as odd.  No oidea what yet, but will keep looking.  Might just be me on Corporate/Federal Monday Morning from below subpar.

Gracias,

Glenn

Post by: PF on February 12, 2013, 12:10:28 AM
It's not you Conquistador. The limbs were pretty thin before I added armor plates so the anatomy is a bit wrong for a human (tho you might find someone actually built like this considering the variety of human bodies).
Since this project is mostly about aliens, I hope the model will look better with a thin humanoid face or helmet.

Well, if you were thinking about something else, let me know please.
Title: Re: Space guys
Post by: Conquistador on February 12, 2013, 11:52:48 AM
That may well be it.   :)

You are right, I need to shift from human to humanoid alien in my evaluation of the figures.   ::)  In that sense these are fine.   :-*

Possibly the bulk of the upper body/armor in comparison with the arms is what seems askew too.  See second sentence again.

Keep up the good work.

I think it's a coin flip between putting these into production and having a unique force of figures that no one else has.  Alien  boutique!   lol   ;)   :)

Gracias,

Glenn

I generally like the quality of the sculpts and I do appreciate the intention to introduce more aliens in 28mm since the available ranges are a bit thin in that deparment.
I also understand that humanoid aliens are a bit more accepted due to the TV/Movie overkill for having to cast human actors  ;) and thus make rubber forehead aliens  ;)

Nevertheless, I am personally more kind of a "hardcore SF" fan, and would love to see more non-humanoid aliens but I undertand this is more difficult to achieve

The vaguely ameobic thing towards the left on that pic reminds me rather of the Dralasites from Star Frontiers - they were rather groovy non-humanoid aliens in my opinion, though attempts to make them as minis are a bit problematic - this one that I found on the web is not too bad, but when I tried to make them they looked like a pile of blu-tac with an ammo-belt.

Thank you all for your comments.

Honestly, I like that character but I'm not sure about it turned into a miniature. Also, I think he is still a humanoid in shape.  Perhaps with some texture or more like the one raising arms at the bottom of the drawing?
But I will make at least two non-humanoids. My "plan" for the squad being:
-two humans (male and female)
-two humanoids (two arms and two legs but not human proportions)
-two non-humanoids (hopefully weird or very weird)

Here are some non-humanoids I made in the past:
At 1:100
http://15mmspaceopera.blogspot.fr/search/label/Non%20humanoid%20alien
This one at 1:56 tho he could be used for any scale

Let me know what you think please.

I acually have that one, tho I know him as "Woglin Zadaggle" from ZombieSmith A7D12 line:
http://www.zombiesmith.com/products/woglin-zadaggle

Did you do the rest of their non-humanoid "travellers" too?

Anyway, I certainly wouldn't mind shelling some filthy lucre hard-earned cash your way if you managed to get some of the humans (and see no problem with the "stealth suit guy" being baseline human so no rubber forehead alien head on him plz) and non-humanoid aliens to market. Obviously subject to usual caveats such as cost etc.

Woglin Zadggle is a slaefo. I mean that's how Zombiesmith called it. Mine is usually called the cyber-snail victim.

Did you do the rest of their non-humanoid "travellers" too?

I made them except the greys, the big bot and Robert Smith. Plus some others Zombismith hasn't released yet.

Still unsure about the price since I don't know if I'm going to produce them myself or not and how much they will cost me. Hopefully I'll be able to propose something for a reasonable price (well not like 10 EUR a guy +shipping).

I think I have all of the nonhumanoids they've released (I'm considering the ones labeled as Cyt humanoids tho, mileages may vary), including Robert Smith. They are all very nice work 8)

I can accept a bit higher price if you are selling from EU than if you are selling from US but maybe a tenner for a 28mm human is indeed a bit steep, nice as your work is. Might be quite acceptable for a complex and/or large nonhumanoid of course.

They are awesome as usual! But in the first pictures, the shoulder pads seem too big. The knee-pads are great.

I have made another pair of shoulder-pads. There are slightly different and shorter but wider. The painter just told me he was prefering them so I should be able to show them soon.

This.

Also, the back posture of the guy with backward-pending knees is a tad too straight up. I do believe that from the biomechanical POV the back should arc more. It's quite common to just to alter the legs tho so I suppose few people will care much.

They're all from the same army/corps/squad. That's also why they wear more or less the same armor.

Auxiliary scout (same army too but not same squad):

Post by: tnjrp on August 21, 2013, 10:53:13 AM
I could certainly find use for the scouts, moreso if there'll be more than two poses, but they aren't my favorite "space guys". I don't think digitigrade feet and human hands go all that well together -- tho I suppose I may be in the minority with this as well, see for example
http://elementgames.co.uk/images/products/6712/6695-chaksa-auxiliars-box-of-4-tohaa-large.jpg

Also, the more @ double knee the arrangement becomes, the more the upright posture becomes problematic to maintain. But we've had that discussion already.

Please, please, please let them stay within the EU so I can get my hands on them! They're just about the best to have happened to 28mm sci-fi for ages!

What about the caterpillar one by the way? Is there going to be multiple stances of that race as well?

Post by: Ajsalium on August 26, 2013, 03:11:08 PM
Wow! That last one is perfect!

I already liked the faces of this race. Alien yet human enough so that they can show proper emotions. Agresiveness being the main one!

But the pose of this one... A scout. No foot on a rock, no weird acrobatics... Just a scout doing his job. And his job ain't pretty.

This is a must have.

The last guy you posted doesn't appeal to me as much as the previous ones...and I really don't care for the head.  the whole model looks a little tiny bit too stiff?  I can't really explain it.  Overall, not bad, and not something that would stop me from purchasing him in a blister with other minis.

I think that the problem is indeed in the head- the teeth just look wrong, a bit too cartoonish for the style of the figure.

Thanks in advance for your time and comments. Have a good week!

PS: The rock isn't really part of the model.

These are great.

What's happened to them?

Did anyone buy them up to get them into production?

If not why not? I needs them my precious, I needs them ;D

The worm and the four-legged guy look really spiffy 8)

Humanoid troopers look to be good sculpts too, I like the action poses on #1 and #8. But it's a really contested market so I still lack enthusiasm for them.

There aren't that many humanoid aliens on the market from what I know unless you mean humans.

Just a modification of a previous sculpt I had shown. I didn't like the head and thought the hands were too big:

Contrariwise my experience is that a vast majority of "aliens" in scifi games are humanoids.

Hopefully they'll go into production one way or another but those were more test casts to see what needed to be reworked, added, get multiple limbs I didn't want to sculpt x times because it's boring and pointless, etc.

Technically great as usual 8)

The trooper looks good overall, tho the arms seem a bit too "tagged on". I suppose the idea is to give it an insectoid feel but still. Some sort of socket joint would work better.

The gun is IMCO too over the top in size, especially so the perforated "melta gun" whatsit at the business end. Obviously it would be easy to remove tho so it's not a huge problem, and some folks might well prefer a bit more massive weaponry than what's been shown so far.

That is a beautiful design, a bit alien but still plausibly "technological". Maybe you could add some elevators (gouvernails de profondeur) to the tail, either in a t-shape to the tip of the rudder or replace the vertical fin with a v-tail, slightly inclined towards the rear?

One thing, though, I'd like to clarify my preference for a V-tail, as a T-elevator might make it look too similar to the Space Marine "Battle Bumblebee" aka Stormtalon. Damn, now GW go and ruin tilt-engine VTOLs for us, too.  lol

I think it's mainly due to the large engines. Could you replace those with swooping wings, maybe angled downward, which have the engines integrated? That would improve the alien aspect.

Two sets of arms is certainly a little excessive from the production point of view but two optional heads might be a nice incentive if these are sold individually. One alternative to consider when marketing these would be offering "mixmaster" versions of minis where you can pick any extra bitz that fit a given body for a higher price.

Im backing at Squad Leader.  After watching this project develop so nicely for so long, it would be rude not to :)

As a quick aside PF, its probably worth noting that these figures are "heroic 28mm" or "30mm" or something in the description.  Not all gamers know what scale 1:54 is, plus as the URL to your blog has "15mm" in it, those two factors might scare off potential backers.

I hope that it all goes well.  This range deserves to be seen: its lovely.

I am not as familiar with Indiegogo ( first time user) as I am with Kickstarter. All of the Kickstarters that I have done have had free shipping in the USA. I never had to think about additional shipping with Kick starter.

Great minis and I look forward to you making the goal.

I somewhat doubt that but a "racially pure" unit/force would seem to be an easier sell, certainly. I'm not at all sure about the true popularity of the "Alien Legion" approach, despite some people enthusing about the subject on some forums time and again.

All the same, the total for the Shock Troopers is still going up and there is more than 20 days left so it's not quite @ sure to fail yet.

Definitely agree with this. I have a bunch of aliens from other manufacturers and, while they're very nice, I struggle to think of things to do with them other than the Cantina scene in Star Wars. Being able to put together a cohesive unit with ten or so with different poses would be much more useful.

Hopefully the Indiegogo campaign will fund, but there seem to be plenty of small companies out there who manage without it. Effigy Miniatures springs to mind - one guy, small range of figures (granted, he's closed, but that was only because he found full time work as a sculptor with another company :D).

The figures look very nice and are sufficiently different to what's out there that there should be a market for them without the Indiegogo route (personally, I'm in for a set of the loors when they appear).

If it doesn't fund, have you considered trying to sell the masters to someone like Hasslefree?
Title: Re: Space guys ("new" loors page 10)
Post by: cheetor on March 05, 2014, 09:42:14 AM
Its the variety of species all wearing a uniform armour type that appeals to me about this project.  Granted, I dont know if that makes the range more or less likely to sell to the market as a whole, but if this project was a set of nicely sculpted and designed mono-species alien troopers I would have been a lot less likely to pledge.  The Loors do look fantastic too though.

I dont know what part of the market I represent at this point, I do seem to end up painting more oddball stuff on the periphery of the projects that I engage in.  I do know that I will be disgusted with the community as a whole if a small, cool project like this doesnt fund ;)  Im sort of joking about that, but Im sort of not joking too.

"racially pure"

sorry to be a pain in the ass, but these are two words that should never appear in a sentence together (not even in SF unless used critically). Besides, it is also technically wrong (and scientifically debated too). If useful at all, the term "race" is only used for the human species.

please do us all a favour and change it to something like "multi-species", please

former user: I hope tnjrp won't mind me answering to you but I think we're all on the same page. I mean he used " ".

Well, we'll see if the project fails or succeeds and what happens to the loors but I tend to think people are more into units/ armies/ teams of the same species too.

As a painter or gamer, I think it's cool to have different things to paint (and well, my Bronzed Flesh is empty) or different profiles to play with.

Hopefully, I'll find enough people with the same tastes and the project will succeed.

I did not want to imply we are on the other side, I know that we all think the same here about where racists can go (preferrably to hell) - sorry if my post allowed for this interpretation
I am also not on the "political correct"  side either

I simply makes me sick to imagine what visitors this word combination in a search engine would trigger, after all we are in the open on the internet....

While I agree that "single-species" has less of an aftertaste to it and is more neutral, I'd advise everybody to calm down a bit, and consider that all involved aren't native speakers so thoughts might not translate as well as intended.

AFAIR, Effigy used a kickstarter both times he produced new figs.

@PF

I sincerely hope that the IndieGoGo succeeds, but sholud it not, pls consider putting the figs up for pre order and see if you can get the moulds made that way.

I don't really know how much it costs to get a mould made, but there's a lot of interest, especially in the Loor.

If all else fails, then I hope you'll consider selling the line to another manufacturer, for the purely selfish reason that I want to get my sticky fingers on your figs.

I really want this project to go through, and it has very little to do with me getting cool new toy soldiers. I mainly contributed to this because I want PF to have enough starting funds to get his business going. Don't get me wrong, I still want my goodies. I'm just more interested in seeing a talented sculptor kick start his business. (I supposed I could have said 'Indiegogo' his business, but that doesn't make any sense.)

Yes Please

there are by far not enough good aliens available, and a multi-species corps is simply great.
I must say I found the idea with the Lantern Corps not bad either.

Hello,
I backed this yesterday at Section leader level.

I think the "alien legion" theme is great but I fear that a lot of potential backers just don´t know about the campaign.

Perhaps someone could make a post/thread about it on on forums like dakkadakka. Some Tau players might be interested in an alien multi-species squad.

I really hope that the campaign succeeds.

This in spades.

That's sort of what I was getting at, as in don't lose heart if it doesn't. PF is a fantastic sculptor - hell get success sooner rather than later and hopefully with this crowd-funding project.

Hello,

I posted an update for my Indiegogo project with a few combinations for new aliens:

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/alien-shocktrooper-squad/x/6453404?c=activity

And two pictures of my first loor with colors:

Thanks for watching (and double thanks for reading considering my english :D )!

..."so you can see some modifications to the squad is feasible" ...  lol

And there are others.;) Not to mention the syntax, the lenght, etc.

Let's say english isn't my native language and isn't taught that much in my galaxy so I suppose I have an excuse.  o_o

I've just pm'd PF, but wanted to add a public thanks for the Shocktrooper and Loor figures that he sent to me, completely unsolicited, at the weekend. The figures, although test casts, are very crisp and should paint up a treat.

A very kind gesture and much appreciated

Thanks again PF :D

Yes Please

there are by far not enough good aliens available, and a multi-species corps is simply great.
I must say I found the idea with the Lantern Corps not bad either.
Could this be solved with a set of arms? To broaden the target group?

Cheers, I personally think it's a  no brainer for lanterns or even non combatant aliens.

Thank you zemjw.

Posted an update with a few more combinations for the squad:

Here's one of them painted: the "death bot" version (body 3 +head 1 +arms 10).

Would love to see a couple of Loors included as add ons.

These would be great for games like Deadzone, Warpath, AE Bounty, Farscape, or Star Wars (the Rebel Alliance included a lot of non-human species).  The variety makes them more appealing to me than if they were all the same species.

Unfortunately, it'll take a near-miracle to save this particular project :(

Hopefully some other way will be found to produce them tho. Perhaps run a Loor-centric IGG project and put some of these out as "stretch goals"?

Well, if this IGG campaign doesnt work out (and maybe it will.  Its not over yet) then keep us in the loop regarding anything else relating to these guys.  I will be mildly disgusted with the miniature buying public if this doesnt succeed :(

Well, maybe if the Loors sell well then the Shocktroopers might be considered at a later date.  I know that I will channel the refunded Shocktrooper cash straight into the Loors at the earliest opportunity.

Hi Guys

I will be taking these Aliens over and putting them into production in the near future

Thanks to PF for a wonderful group of sculpts which we can hopefully give a good home

Now to continue in the spirit of the crowd funding project I am thinking of running vouchers for these in a similar vein to what Micropanzer studio are doing at the moment, which would give you backers the chance to get the original squads you pledged for and a little extra

This would probably run for a month while the moulds are being made and then any voucher holders would get their figures before general release

What do you think

The quads are indeed top of the line, although I'm thinking the worm guy seen on the late IGG project may still be the best of the lot. Don't care that much for the bug chap personally but I do have a soft spot for dogboyz... Even if I tend to try to discourage people from passing "furries" off as xenos. So it goes on my want list.

Great sculpts PF, if these aliens prove to be as popular as I think they might I am sure PF would be happy to do some additions to them at a later date and I would be more than happy to produce them

Also, the voucher scheme on CP Models site mentions "mystery aliens". The dog boy might be one of those, I suppose 8)

Courtesy of PF (and indirectly CP Models) I managed to get my hands on a Loor model.  I got it painted on and off over the last couple of days.  The sculpts are just as nice as I expected them to be from looking at this thread.  My paint job is decent tabletop quality, but I suspect that some of the painters on this forum could do some really lovely things with the crisp, fine detailing.  But if you have been following this thread, then you already know that :)

Although I dont play 40K, I do plan to paint the Shocktroopers and Loor to match the Tau test piece that I painted last year (shown) and the CP Avians that I also painted with matching equipment (also shown).

The associated blog post is HERE (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/04/12/loor-scout/).

Yup, 2nd.

just as I thought, the loor are the true scouts for the Tau.

hmm, I am about to have an epiphany about a tau story that is set on a wilderness planet...
"The last of the Loor"...

My pack of Shocktroopers and Loor arrived this morning :)

After watching PFs sculpting thread for the last year or so I am delighted to finally have the lot in hand.  The little guys (one is a "Lord of Xhaam" and the other is a different sculpt that I had not seen before) are personal favourites.

Cool stuff.  Im very interested to see the paint jobs that these get from some of the big guns around here.

I just received my order in mid USA. The sculpts are very cool and the cast is very clean. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to add these miniatures to my sci fi collection!
I am really impressed with the varied height of the alien models.

Great job.
