Title: Painting laser cut mdf buildings
Post by: Dave C on November 08, 2012, 05:28:41 PM
I've been looking around 'tinernet' for any advice I can find on painting laser cut MDF buildings. I've just bought some (from Sarissa) and I'd be interested to hear about the experiences others have had in painting such buildings. For example, is is best to somehow seal the MDF prior to painting and how to paint without losing the fine lasered details? Any information and advice will be gratefully received.

I've sealed some with just some spray varnish and it has worked well enough. Me and a friend are painting up 16 of their Wild West houses for a convention and we forgot to seal them and just just a paint roller before putting them together and it has worked better then I thought but they do absorb absurd amounts of paint.

If you look around, you'll find some threads dealing with this

There is also an article in the latest issue of WS&S - I haven't read it in detail though, but a quick glance made me think it might be useful for you.

I've found that diluted pva acts as a suitable primer and sealant for MDF. Otherwise its like paining a sponge...

As others have said, they do soak up a shiteload of paint! I primed mine wit ha coat of brown (but I do this to most of my terrain anyway), and used brighter colours than I intended them to be. Ended up looking nice and muted, which was what I was after.
