If you know LotOW and/or LotR, you'll get a general idea of it.

As Argonor said, if you know LotR or LotOW, then the rules are nearly self-explanatory. It's a continuation of that same system.

It is a beautiful looking book. Full-color and new artwork throughout, lavish miniature illustrations (with figures painted and provided by many of the fine people here). There are great sections on history of the Golden Age of the Atlantic pirates, and stats for the big name pirates as well.

Tim lavished attention on the rulebook and the content shines as a result. If you knew nothing about pirates, you would come away with a good introduction to the real history and plenty of ideas on how to play.

I am glad to own it. I own enough pirates that I could easily cobble together a few crews, and if I want to run a 20-some model skirmish, I could easily imagine going to this book for the rules.

I'm still waiting to receive mine, but I've got a question in advance:
How compatible are the two Systems?

Means: Will it be hard to play civil war boat skirmishes with the rules or is it really easy to add both rulests together. How compatible is the equipment? Can I buy double barreled muzzle loaded pistols for my Cowboys, or do I have to adjust the cost? Can you play a Pirate Crew against Texas Rangers or is the technology gap to large?

I'd guess the pirates would be cut to shreds by men armed with repeating rifles.

Unless you could engineer a scenario where everyone was very close in and it comes down to melee quickly.

No reason why you couldn't try Civil War riverine games. It would only need very minor [if any] tinkering to get a good game.
