Title: Silent Invader's Build: Urban Stream/Sewer (5/1 - with miniature)
Post by: Silent Invader on November 17, 2012, 07:32:14 PM
My build will be inspired by this:

An open sewer section to become part of a post-apoc urban 'winter' board

That will be a very useful piece of terrain. Do you know where you can get 28mm sized shopping trolleys?, that would be great!

I was thinking initially of car body repair mesh but that's a diamond mesh so it would look wrong. I'll bet it's a difficult thing to make. Like you say, wire round a shaped block is probably the best idea. Having seen your WotR masterpiece this project will look great.

I am wondering if I can make one by wrapping wire around a block  :)
There is one in etched Brass. Can't find it at the moment though. Remember it for being very expensive, and that it was on the same homepage that did firestairs for buildings (H0?).

You might be able to get a shopping trolley from a dollshouse website thing.

I found this on US ebay:

 http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=160842241240

It's a Monopoly piece so may be too big.

I was trying to post a photo of a wheely bin earlier, hence the cock up with the image. What about a half sunken bin that could be used for cover? I've got some somewhere if you want one?

I'm guessing it's not problem if some of the water is iced over.... it's still water, right?  :) ;)

Yes, I think we have stressed that several times. Water in any form. Im fact we are hoping for people to make attempts at water in various forms and degree of agitation.

I came across the perfect material for your trolley, and for wire fences. It comes from portable gas stoves... it's a very fine mesh that I picked up in a camping store. I was thinking about how you could make this on the way into work this morning... If you made a template that folds up into the shape of a trolley (like you make a cardboard cube in primary school) you could add a few more details with armature wire etc. I'm sure you'll find a way to put it together but I thought that mesh would have been perfect!

If you have a belt sander and some time, you can just clamp the pipe in a workbench or workmate and run the belt sander along it until you achieve the profile you want. (Cue the noise, dust and required facemask!)

Effing brill.I would, though, solder a thin wire onto the upper edge of the trolley to make it look complete.

Just a quick point- why don't you either solder or crip the leds to the wire?

It's all soldered Andy, I'm just paranoid so I insulated the joins with tape as it's all pretty combustible stuff!   :D

True! the last thing that you want is for it to go up in flames!

Out of interest; why did you go for yellow LEDS?

The leds have a variable flicker and so I convinced myself that the effect is that of a guttering candle!  That said, when my elder daughter came out to the workshop she thought the effect was more like the emergency lights in a horror movie and wondered about a buzzing sound (PS .... there is also a sound generator in the works.... howling winds, running water, etc and now fizzing lights!)

Multimediamodels  :D

Love it  8)

Where did you get your flicker lights from (after something similar myself)?

cheers

Yeah momma, I just saw 'The Road' again and this board is already giving me that vibe.

You have to include the father and the son from Lead Adventure miniatures in your collection.

I've wanted to do a scenario with them for ages and bought them from Alex last year... and as a true collector they're still sat in the blister pack I bought them in.  lol

You could always gloss varnish it and have it as a seeping wall of ice as water drains from the top level.

I agree with Procolo. Although I live in the south of Sweden, there's fucking snow everywhere during the winter >:(
The snow on the wall can be explained with some dry powder snow just getting stuck there by wind and basically freezing in place when the temperature drops :)

I really like the look of this. I did a similar area on amodel railway once and in ngauge (one of the smallest gauges) it was a nightmare for certain details.

As for the trolley. Wire around a block like you suggest would be great and maybe use solder instead of glue for a stronger bond, potentially with some flux, you should be able to get a small amount so as to not hide the details of the mesh effect.

Also if the above does not work, you could get some of the thin mesh from say a fish net (cheap £1 thing) and wrap that around a block of wood, add pva glue to harden it then paint it?
A bit like doing rigging on model ships?
