Title: Prof's Horrors (upd.15.05) - The Bedlam Brotherhood
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on December 01, 2012, 07:33:03 PM
A few weeks ago after reading of another inspirational Jet&Tenz "Chaos in Carpathia" battle report; I've purchased the PDF version of the rules and started reading. Actually I've played CiC vs. Tom (Mike D. Mc Brice) already but as usual I didn't really know the rules, just did all that what Tom said :) Anyway, I've liked the game and now I wanted to play it again. And to read the rules this time, of course.

Actually I've collected quite a bunch of Gothic Horror figures as you can see there http://witchhunter.net/galerie_gothic_horror.html, though this time I've thought it would be a good idea to create a whole new gang. So I've decided to try it with Romanian Vampires from the Tom's list (http://www.tag-web.de/gothic-horror/carpathiawarbands.pdf).

As the gang size will be 350 GBP, I wouldn't need too many vampires, they're actually cost quite a lot. I’ve checked my lead pile and found out that I was crazy enough to buy (decades ago) all (these days available) Westwind Gothic Horror vampires. And that’s a lot, really.

Anyway, after some painting I’ve got enough to present you my new beginning on this board. Hope you like them.
Here comes my Vampire Lord (what a sculpt!) with his faithful Hunchback Servant. The hunchback is a great touch, I very like the idea of a slow-minded and crippled little guy following his master and ready to die serving him.

Another Vampire Lord, just in case I need two of them :)

Vampires. Not that strong as the Lord but still very dangerous creatures.

Acolytes. Or lesser Vampires. Nice way to involve all the brides into the game.

And some shots without terrain

(http://www.witchhunter.net/images/carpathia/vampires/ romanian_vampire_lord_1.jpg)

(http://www.witchhunter.net/images/carpathia/vampires/ romanian_vampire_lord_2.jpg)

Now I still need some Cossacks to complete the gang. They’re already on my desk. Not sure if I will manage to paint them for my first game next weekend, but if not I could still take some Foundry Cossacks.

That’s all for today. Back to painting.

Wonderful Alex. Lovely painting on those figures, and some fine pieces of scenery (of course).

Igor here, says: please say hello to his cousin... They are almost identical twins  ;)  :D

Outstanding!!! The painting is top notch! What line are the lesser vampires from? They look awesome.

Once you get the rules down be sure to check out Jet's secret objective cards. They add a whole new element to the game!

Cheers,

Tenz

I totally overlooked the Concubines. Jet runs romanians and doesn't use those models. After seeing your handy work I'm inspired to get the models and start the warband.

Glad to hear you will be using the cards. You won't be let down. Feel free to drop us a line if any questions pop up.

Lovely, lovely work, Professor. It's tipped me over the edge into finally getting the CiC rules. Like you, I've found Tenz and Jet's batreps inspirational (and maddening in their quality)! Thanks for posting your work. Can't wait to see your Cossacks. (Oops, that sounded suggestive.)

Good to see you back in the Gothic Horror vein Alex.  :)

Lovely stuff, I especially like the graveyard. ;D

You have inspired me to dig out my figures again, now to try and organise a game between now and the New Year. :)

Good to hear that, Esienfaust, it's definitely a nice set or rules. Cossacks are coming, though I'm still a bit hesitate about color scheme.

Thank you. Btw, the Brotherhood isn't painted by me but by Christian Weiss about 10-12 years ago, he really did an awesome job on them. I just rebased them. These days we were trying to play Vampire Wars, but the rules just didn't work. Glad I've got some using for the Brothers again. I will make some proper photos of the whole gang and post it here, too.

Small update, the Vampire Form of the Beast/Bat. Actually it looks more like a beast with wings. Beasts in the Tom's rules are only allowed for the Nosferatu. Romanian blood suckers aren't able to switch to a beast and have to be turning into bats. But till I find a proper bat, this one will have to work for my Romanians.

WIP shot of the Cossacks. I wasn't able to find another colour scheme as this blue-red-black one. It fits them and their character just perfect. So the guys now just are looking similar to Westwind or Tom's ones :)
First time I've seen the sculpts of these Cossacks, I was a bit sceptical, odd poses, motions. But now as they're painted, I just have to love them. Westwind's magic..

I´ve recently done a vampire-gang too...uhm, nearly done. I used the same colour-scheme with my cossacks, but did it the other way round: blue trousers und red tops. Reminds me to finish them at last and put them on the table  :D

Magnificent! I'm going to have to get those Cossacks one of these days. Will you field one as the Cossack Hero character? I think it's a smart move if Cossack henchmen are going to be fielded. For that matter, the hero is quite skilled at shooting and combat in his own right.

I’m still thinking about this. That’s my list for the moment, we’re going to play 350 GBP:

1 x Vampire Lord (75 GBP)

1 x Hunchback Servant (12 GBP), Axe (3 GBP)

1 x Vampire (65 GBP)
   1 x Sword (8 GBP)

2 x Acolyte (2x42=84 GBP)
   2 x Sword (2x8=16 GBP)

1 x Cossack Guard (5) (36 GBP)
   5 x Muskets (5x10=50 GBP)

Total: 349 GBP

I could take out an Acolyte (42GBP+8GBP) and put the Cossack Hero (38 GBP) giving him a Pistol Heavy (11 GBP). He’s not that good at Resolve and Fate but I would get a nice improvement of my ranged combat power. Maybe a good idea playing against the Brotherhood.

Very nice warband! Love the Bat Vampire!

Henchmen groups work best when 6 or 7 models strong. Having 8-10 henchmen models for each group in the collection gives you most options.

The Romanian Vampire list is very flexible, I've used many variants in the last months of testing. It's nice if you can suprise your opponent with something he hasn't expected. It's also nice to have an opponent who tries something new from time to time.

1. Classic Dracula Vampires
-Vampire Lord
-Vampire
-Acolyte
-Hunchback Servant
-Cossach Hero
-Cossack Guard

Variant: leave out the Vampire and add 2 Accolytes, that's a the very classic Dracula warband. Dracula and his three brides with some Cossacks.
Most people use lists similar to this one, preferably a Vampire heavy variant. It's the first that comes to mind.

2. Cossack Heavy
-Vampire Lord
-Cossack Hero
-2x Cossack Guard (8-10 strong) (1 unit armed with muskets and hand weapons, 1 unit armed with sword and pistol)
-fill up with some Accolytes or a Vampire

That's a very shooty list and can be a nasty suprise if the opponent is equipped for close combat. It's also very difficult to reduce big henchmen groups using ranged combat. Just make sure the Coccack hero stays in range to use his "boss" trait.
You can even shoot into close combat to support the Vampire Lord as he's pretty save from ranged weapons.

3. Vampire Heavy, lightly equipped
-Vampire Lord
- 6 Accolytes

Makes a very fast warband and it's very hard hitting is you can keep charging. Take care your opponent doesn't manage to pin down the Accolytes because they are not very good once stuck in close combat. It takes some manoeuvring to get most out of the Accolytes, that's charging from combat to combat making best use of the leaving a multiple combat rules.

4. Vampire Heavy, heavily equipped
-Vampire Lord
- 2 Vampires
- 2 or 3 Accolytes

Playing only 2 Accolytes gives you enough money to equip the Vampires with the maximum number of additional traits. Fill up points by purchasing a Hunchback Servant if necessary. It's a very small list with possibl only 5 models but the Vampires are very strong when fully equipped.
You can also replace one Accolyte with a Cossack Hero who is a more flexible model.

Some great hints, Tom, thank you!

I still have some Cossacks on my desk so I surely will try with larger Cossacks groups later. But that Dracula version is quite nice, so I’ve rewritten my list. The one Vampire is out, the Cossack Hero is in and I gave Dodge trait to the Lord and Acolytes, just to make them a bit more resistant to ranged weapons.

1 x Vampire Lord (75 GBP)
    1 x Extra Strength (+1) (8 GBP)
    1 x Dodge (5 GBP)
1 x Hunchback Servant (12 GBP)
    1 x Axe (3 GBP)
2 x Acolyte (2x42=84 GBP)
    2 x Sword (2x8=16 GBP)
    2 x Dodge (2x5 =10 GBP)
1 x Cossack Hero (38 GBP)
    1 x Pistol Heavy (11 GBP).
1 x Cossack Guard (5) (36 GBP)
    5 x Muskets (5x10=50 GBP)

Total: 348 GBP

I also would like to try the Version 3 one day, a Lord and a bunch of Acolytes, that should be a great fun.

Btw, almost forgot,  this Boss trait, it’s Cairo one. I don’t have the Cairo book, what exactly is this trait?

Just to point out, I'm pretty sure you only have to pay for one musket in a group, so 10GBP instead of 50 GBP. Check your rulebook to be sure. Spend the extra points on vampire abilities!

You're right, thank you, I've missed it:

Henchmen groups purchase ranged weapons just as character models, but they need pay the cost for the weapon only once

Now going to write the list again :)

For the Boss trait see the warband list, the rules are in there.

Acolytes can't take extra traits, they are not Vampires. Only the "Vampire Lord" and the "Vampire" models can take extra traits. The "Vampire" trait makes a Vampire.
Also note:
Quote
Each trait can be purchased only once for a warband.

Acolytes don't realy need swords, they have their claws and teeth. They can use swords and profit from the +1 D cc defense rule but it's hardly worth the cost.
A sword for the Vampire Lord is an option if you have the spare cash or depending on what you intent to do with him (or any of the Vampires). The bonus dice for parries can help them survive. It's still expensive.
Better give the swords to the Cossacks and the Hero. Every model should own a close combat weapon. Cossacks are excellent close combat fighters.

Also remember that the Vampire Lord with +1STR also add +1D bonus to his DR-Pool.

the new list so far, more Acolytes and another extra feature for the Lord

1 x Vampire Lord (75 GBP)
    1 x Extra Strength (+1) (8 GBP)
    1 x Extra Agility (+1) +8 GBP
    1 x Dodge (5 GBP)

1 x Hunchback Servant (12 GBP)
    1 x Axe (3 GBP)

3 x Acolyte (3x42=126 GBP)

1 x Cossack Hero (38 GBP)
    1 x Pistol Heavy (11 GBP).
    1 x Sword (8 GBP)

1 x Cossack Guard (5) (36 GBP)
     1 x Musket Rifle (10 GBP)

Those trees are really great. Can't wait to see the dark forest in all its glory.

By the way, my Vampire Lords has the exact same three upgrades as yours. Works very well I find. Well, actually, my lord was seriously weakened by a stake last game and barely came out of it alive.

I think Iron Will is the best trait for a Lord, combined with Vampiric Might and the ability to drind blood it makes him nearly indestrucible even if you have a bad dice roll. Terrifieing Aura is also great but you have to remember to use it and it doesn't help much against a Bruderschaft Warband.

Stakes are the one thing Vampires should be afraid about, there's nothing that helps against them. It's difficult to score a sucessfull hit with them though. It's always a pleasure to see the Vampire players face go pale if you have a good attack roll using a stake :D.

The Priest comes with a dagger and doesn't need a spear. He might want to purchase a 2nd trait instead. Also the Priest doesn't need Holy Water because he isn't able to hit anything with it. Better give it to another model.

You could get a 2nd dog to accompany the Grossmeister. Dogs are also good to keep the Priest save if the scenario requires him to get into the thick of it.

The Ordensbruder entries need to choose their free traits.

Yesterday Westfalia Chris and me played Chaos in Carpathia. Bruderschaft(Chris) vs. Romanian Vampires (me). It was a great fun, though we needed a bit of time for reading the book, looking for special rules and trying not to forget anything :)

Still have to sort out the pics and write down some words about the game. Though don't expect a report a-la-Jet :) I'm not that good in English or storytelling.

Here a little teaser, Bruderschaft is ready for their mission!

What a shot! Nothing beats photos of top-notch minis on a top-notch table. Now, enough of this teasing nonsense - Let's see the photos. I'm very curious to see how your Romanians worked on the table against the Brotherhood.
Title: Re: Somewhere in Carpathia (upd. 10.12, Bruderschaft vs. Vampires Battle Report)
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on December 10, 2012, 03:02:01 PM
Okay :) let's try to write a battle report. Didn't do any since ages, to be honest.

How told already, Westfalia Chris and me played a Chaos in Carpathia game recent weeekend in the deepest basement of the Witchheimer's manor.  It has snowed once again in the South Germany, so we had a perfect weather for gaming.

The gangs were Bruderschaft (Chris) vs. Romanian Vampries (me). Gang size of 350 GBP. We've also used Tom Weiss' rule additions and band lists and Jason's Secret Objectives. Thanks to both guys, all these additions were working top notch and have helped to ensure the enjoyment of all aspects of Gothic wargaming. Surely, Chris and me aren't experts in CiC, so we needed quite a bit of time trying to use all the special rules we have. Though finally I've forgot to try the blood-sucking or to give some stakes to Chris' warband. Sorry, Chris, such was not my intention, for sure :)

Ok, let's check the photos. The table. 1,20x1,20m. Almost everything terrain is painted by Grimm, my personal hero and an absolute genius if it comes to make and paint terrain. I only have based the trees and apinted that boring shed on the corner. Thanks, mate! The last one he did for me is that middle-age-looking castle, actually a GW piece. Grimm has removed some of the countless skulls and did his best making it suitable for my Gothic and Bruegelburg games. The lovely two "fachwerk" houses manufactured by Pardulon, the company from our own Zafarelli, thanks to him, too! The cemetery is from Armorcast. The blacksmith's shop - no idea, the red-roofed shed - Hovels. many of the trees are from HEKI, a german company, producing them for Railway Modelling. Looking very good and I'm glad that I've managed to get them ready for the game.

Warbands.

Romanian Vampires lead by Vampir Lord, master of Evil, Count Attila von Siebenburgen accompanied by faithful Hunchback Oleg, his brides/acolythes Arachne, Crescentia, Letizia and his personal Cossack guard (Bogdan (Hero), Stepan, Ivaylo, Mihai, Matei and Gherasim). Almost all the models are from Westwind, except of the the Hero, the green-coat-guy, he's from Foundry, I didnt manage to paint the Westwind hero one.

Now the opponents, Bruderschaft, lead by a Grossmeister, sorry no individual names yet, maybe for the next game. They all are Westwind and painted by Christian Weiss (yes, the brother of Tom. I tell you, a very talended family :))

First we did draw the Secret Objectives, the Vampires got the Search, the Kidnapping and the Invasion

The Bruderschaft got the Duell, the Rescue and the Search.

Person of Interest - Martha Karagusza with his lovely children.

Key Lokation - blacksmith's shop.

Eventually we've placed six of the clues on the table, three on each half of the table

Start position of the warbands:

And go! The Cossacks are going to the next hill, trying to find a good position for the shooting.

Two of the Brides are running along the cemetery looking for the clues. The Count, the hunchback and the third bride are aiming the forest, where the naive Martha with her children is walking.

The bunch of brothers is rushing ahead, they have been told a pretty looking widow is in danger and now every guy is trying to rescue her first.

Though the Grosmeister seems to be the speediest one.

In the meantime the Count found the poor woman and told her all the stories about all the pretty things in his castle. The widow is tempted to come along.

The hunchback being a bit slower than his beloved Count is shambling through the forest trying to catch up. "Master! Ma-a-a-aster! I'm coming!"

But the Grossmeister after some spurting is arrived. He lunges out and throws something like a bottle towards the Count. Holy Water Alarm! Count is a bit frightened as the bottle hits him but fortunately he manages his Damage test. The epic battle of Good and Evil begins!

on the other side of the forest the Priest with an Ordensbruder are checking the road. They did spot one of the Brides nearing and the brave dog Bonifacius tries to  defend the priest from the spawn of the Devil. Letizia isn't really afraid of and kills the dog easily. Our first close combat. Wow, the Claws are really effective...

Back to the Main Show! After two rounds Grossmeister has lost all his Vitality points. The teamwork of Count and Crescentia did its best.

But then the Priest appears with the Holy Symbol, his True Faith and a Medical Bag. After some rules checking and dice throwing the Vampire Lord has been driven back and the Grossmeister has been healed. Not bad, old boy!

Some rumbles. Claws. Swords.

Supporting by Oleg the unholy bunch manages to KO both guys. This time definitely.

Meanwhile Arachne has captured the Key Lokation

The Cossacks were trying all the time to hit somebody but not very effective. ON their account is the second dog and one or two Ritterbrüder. Also the Ritterbrüder with 8 (!) Crowssbows didn't manage to hurt too many of the cossacks. Bogdan (cossack hero) wasn't bad at all collecting and cracking the clues (two of them)

After seven rounds we've decided to stop. The Vampires got 6 of the Victory Points, Bruderschaft only one and they now have to look for a new Grossmeister.

The game was a great fun. We surely did forget some special rules and things and probably did misinterpret some others. No matter, it was our first game. The "Vampiric Might" was a top notch feature and Claws were deadly. Also the movement of 6 inchs was quite helpful. The Lord with Extra Strength and Extra Agility is a killing machine. The Acolytes being able to use the Vampiric Might trait are very dangerous, too.

Bruderschaft's performance wasn't that good, probably due to the forest between them and Vampires, their only target were some Cossacks on the hill, too far for lots of proper hits. So all the nice ranged weapons haven't been used much. With some more support for the good guys in the battle in the forest we perhaps could have get another ending.

Anyway, good game, good rules. I'm looking forward to more CiC gaming.

Finally a little scene. I didn't manage to try the Shape of the Bat/Beast, too. But the Count was very helpful and took some time for a photo-shooting :)

Absolutely epic game! So good to see the Secret Objective cards being used on such a good-looking table.

Just to clarify a few points:

1. You never revealed your three objective cards to your opponent until the game was over, right? Just making sure.

2. You should look at the "Ending the Game" Entry on page 2 of the Playsheet. If your vampires scored their full 6 VP, they IMMEDIATELY reveal their cards and win the game. So, if you scored 2VP for the Cossack hero finding two clues, 2VP for holding the Person of Interest, as soon as Arachne moved into the key location as the sole occupant, you end it right then and there and win.

Anyway, hope to see you guys playing lots more and posting the photos here. I am painting my new games room tonight so I hope it will be ready for gaming right after Xmas.

Yes, sure!

Well, good hint, thanks. Actually the Vampires got four of the clues. Arachne did get them before she took over the Key Location. But the location has only been invaded in our last round.

Anyway, hope to see you guys playing lots more and posting the photos here. I am painting my new games room tonight so I hope it will be ready for gaming right after Xmas.

Not sure if I will manage to play this month due to Christmas  and so on (though hope so!) but at the latest coming month.

And of course, I will continue to paint and post photos.

Thank you, Aggro!

Finished my Cossacks yesterday. The big guy (perhaps it actually means to be a Gipsy but who cares) will be my Cossack hero.

It's a Westwind figure from one of their Vampire wars packs........ I think. A pack of two vampire hunters and two vampire-types, there are five different ones on their webstore.

So, here are you hiding, Alex!? Since I can't afford to watch all of the boards anymore (too much time needed ...), I missed this new miniature adventure of yours completely. Great work as ever, mate!  :-*

Title: Prof's Horrors (upd.15.05) - The Bedlam Brotherhood
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on May 15, 2016, 08:23:53 PM
For the LPL this time I wanted to revamp the Gothic Horror subject on my paintdesk and my choice felt on the one of the Westwind latest additions to their Empire of the Dead range, the Bedlam Brotherhood.

I always liked the figures of mad people, no idea why.. ) These I loved at the first glance, the characters are so...I don't know, just cool :) and crazy of course..

Btw, here the older lunatics by Westwind (Vamprie Wars range) from my personal collection painted by me 12 years ago. Still very nice miniatures but I like the new ones even more.

Now some shots fron the LPL scene ans around, incl. the Westwind werewolves and vampires (some of them made their apperance on the pages of this thread)

Another stunning entry from this year's colouring-in competition.
 :-* :-*

Now you have me looking at getting these loonies for my asylum when we head off to another Strange Aeons campaign in a while.
As you said, they are rather nice and so full of character.

Wonderful brushwork - I really should get around to uploading my own poor efforts at smearing paint on the fine miniatures from Westwind.

That Westwind Loup Garou model is one of the best werewolf miniatures out there, in my opinion.  He looks like a bipedal version of the werewolf form American Werewolf in London, and always seems to be sneaking.

How did you paint his fur?  Washes?  Drybrushing?  A tiny brush?

Bedlam Brotherhood is as wonderfully painted a group of psychopaths as you could ever encounter (ever hope not to encounter ?).
