Title: The founding of Hickory Flat. The Law and Indians... Threadomancy...
Post by: Za Zjurman on December 05, 2012, 02:09:24 PM
So it is time for a new project.

After seeing some beautiful examples of Old West towns on this forum I really wanted one for myself. So I did the following:

I bought some Black Scorpion miniatures at Crisis.
I printed the following rules to give them a try: A Fistfull of lead and Blackwater Gulch.
I bought some buildings from Sarissa.

The plan is to make a small skirmish table (2 by 2) over the following weeks (or months :D).

Well all this said and done here are some photo's of the early beginnings of the town called Hickory Flat and the soon to be inhabitants.

The Town

The Rules

Step one will be tomorrow, then I am going to play-test the rules with a good friend.

I am intending to keep you all updated over the next few weeks with the progress being made.

This should be interesting. The buildings internist me greatly.
I have been giving a lot of thought recently to doing a weird west game using strange Aeons rules ( or LOTOW... Undecided) mainly because there are so many great minis out there for the old west. Those black scorpion outlaws are cracking. I'm quite jealous of your box of goodies.

Aahhhh, the birth of a town.   I love the look of these laser cut buildings, kind of wish they were about before I started building my own town!

I doubt you' stop at 2'x2', no one ever does.........

Nice stuff, are they all Black Scorpion minis?

Hi all,

I will start this weekend with the first building(s). I must say that they are well packed and smell very good. they are worth the money IMHO.

Nice stuff, are they all Black Scorpion minis?

Yes, they are all Black Scorpion minis. They are nicely detailed but I am still not sure how to clean the mold lines. I bought a cardboard nail file at the local drugstore. These have a very fine grain and hopefully this will work.

Thanx, we are going to try them tomorrow. Reading through the rules it looks very straightforward, easy and most importantly fun. I'll let you know how things went on.

As a fellow Black Scorpion/Sarissa owner...I applaud you sir!  I'm actually about to place an order for the rest of the Black Scorpion line (I have most of them).

I'm a bit sad they went to resin though.  I love my metals.   Looking forward to seeing your progress!

(PS: I also want to see your water tower completed, as I may buy one...or build my own)

Well yes the water tower. Disaster struck yesterday. When putting it together I used to much force and it literally disintegrated into peaces (beyond repair I am affright  >:( :(). Not sure yet what to do but I can tell you it is fragile... Lets just hope this isn't how the rest of the project is going. I probably going to order a new one someday.

Just played the first game of "A Fistful of Lead".
* Easy gameplay.
* No discussion about the rules.
* A good quick reference sheet.
* A first game played in an hour.
* And most importantly, a lot of fun.

Now onto building and painting a town.

Keep you posted,

Thanx for the ideas, please keep them coming. The water tower itself is still untouched, it is the beams that where so fragile that they totally collapsed. I think I am going to scratch build some myself. But it was just a feeling of total AAAAAAAARGH #$@$%&*

Don't fret - that's the easy stuff.

Every worthwhile hobby shop has a nice set of basswood sticks of wood - pick one up, cut/saw it to size.  Other option is to simply put a base on it, and place it on top of a building (some buildings had water towers on the roof).

Part of the reason I haven't purchased a water tower yet is because they look pretty simple to make.

Or buy a simple and cheap resin one from Frontline, they are great.
Title: Re: The founding of Hickory Flat. Update Vintage Wallpaper
Post by: Za Zjurman on December 07, 2012, 07:03:36 PM
A small update. I spend a few minutes on "ze internet" and I found some nice vintage wallpaper samples. The inside of the Old West buildings is bland and without details to say the least so I decides to cover the walls with wallpaper. Sorry for the not so good pictures but there was no daylight left when I arrived home.

I also bought a peace of 28mm thick MDF for the table. After the game yesterday (which I won  :D :D :D) I decided that 2 by 2 is big enough. I also bought some roundwood to fix the water tower

Za

As a fellow Black Scorpion/Sarissa owner...I applaud you sir!

I on the other hand are not.  Lovely sculpts but too dag-gummed large to fit with my decades old collection of Dixons and others.

BUT...

If you are using the larger figures, the founder of Blackwater Gulch had all of his sculpts done to match BS in size / heft.  He's done some Kickstarters to get different posses together, and if you are so inclined, you might want to keep your eye open for future ones as I believe you can get some good deals as well as some KS unique figures.

Cheers,

JJ

My buddies all use different manufacturers, and while it may look a little silly in hand to hand combat - only a few times has it looked downright comical on the board.  Certain companies produce really small miniatures (Knuckleduster are quite tiny by comparison).  At the end of the day though, they all look fine.

I don't like many of the Blackwater Gulch poses yet - the models really let it down.  I like movie-esque stuff, but some of the poses are downright stupid. :(

I'm hoping for better on some of the later posses.

I just backed the last project, so more Old West lead coming this way lol

Well that for me is the most important, if the miniatures look fine and you have fun, the scale doesn't matter that much.

Hi Elbows, Thanks glad you like it and it didn't take long. Just print some wallpaper, cut it and glue it onto the wall. It took me 30 minutes for the first building. I just a glue stick. Thats all and makes a real difference imho. The glass is made from a cover where you put paper in to protect it. Don't now the word for it in English but I hop what I mean. I also glued this on the inside with the glue stick.

Well I made some progress yesterday evening. I finished the first building, a few slight mistakes but overall I'm very very pleased. I hop you like it. C&C more then welcome.

Nice work with the wallpaper and thanks very much for the link.

Hi all,

It was a busy week at work so I couldn't do as much as I wanted to. Yesterday I finished building #3 an #4 for just got a red base coat (it's the saloon). I also ordered some signs from a small company called Tricity laser. They look great on the screen now I just hope they also look great in real life  :D.

Building 3

And a slightly warped photo of the three finished buildings together.

And the wallpaper in building number 4 : The Saloon

Any thoughts about adding some interior window features like frames, sills, sashes, etc? If you're going to play in the interiors, I think that might make a huge difference in terms of the overall realistic look.

My buddy runs the Tri-City Laser Old West stuff - it's pretty good, and the signs are quite good.  I have a baggie of them.  The only thing I don't love is that he uses wood instead of MDF, so paint is a bit of a pain.

Looks like a fantastic little town.  The water tower looks a treat.  I'm going to steal your idea to place slats on the roofs of my buildings.  I've been trying to figure out what I wanted to do with them.  Some dirt, debris and slats is probably just the ticket.

It has been really busy at work the last few days, so I struggled to make any progress. But I finally finished the fifth building. I also spend some money. There are some beautiful 4ground carts & wagons coming my way and a box full of Imex cacti. And I must admit that I ordered the BattleFlag gallows. Hopefully this all arives soon so I can make some progress during my holiday.

Thanx, I'm glad I could give you some inspiration. My buildings were all painted with cheap craft paints and I used a lot of washes, thats all. You can get great results with washes  :D.

I received the building signs from TryCitylaser. they are great. I painted them up an glued them to my buildings. I really really love them, they give an extra touch to the buildings. The batteries from my camera where down tonight so I will take some pictures tomorrow. I also received the gallows from Battle Flag. Also very beautiful.

I hope to take some pictures soon.

I...did not fare so well.  I painted my buildings up but didn't prime them before hand (thinking the thick craft paints would cover well...NOPE!).  My buildings came out okay I guess...but I just suck at painting big flat-sections.  I made up some of my own washes, to no real benefit. :D

I didn't prime my buildings either. I just drybrushed the buildings heavily and then gave the building a watered down black wash. (the new wash from army painter dark tone). then I weathered the building by using a brown wash (strong tone by army painter). Then I slightly dry brusher the building with a grey color, dust like. These washes saved me really on many occasions. ;D

The last building is finished. It is the biggest one I bought and I made it the general store. I also painted and added the signs on my buildings. The board is becoming more and more finished. I only need to paint the water tower, finish the gallows and add some (a lot  ;D) of "detritus".

Building #6 finished.

Groove51 and I played another round of "A fist full of lead" this morning. It was another great game and we had a lot of fun. I must admit I lost and the indians took over the town of Hickory Flat. So I am already thinking of revenge.

The General Store is wonderful.
Full of character and period feel.

The town is shaping up so well.

Now please stop right now, as I am finding Old West harder and harder to resist, and you are not helping!

Thank you very much Mason. And yes I have to stop right now because I'm finding more and more cool stuff I like and want  lol. I promised myself to buy no extra's anymore for this table. I'm awaiting the deliveries from 4ground and Ainstey and that's it...  :P 8)

Wonderful looking buildings, nice kits but finished really well.

However some of the flat roofs did look a little plain. Tar paper was seemingly often used for roof covering and while I am not exactly sure just what this is some of the model railway groups get very excited about it from time to time, suggesting various things to represent it including masking take, crepe paper, pastel paper and tissue paper, especially the stuff for covering model aircraft. The only one of these I have tried was masking tape which was some years ago and while it looked fine at the time it has subsequently started to peel so I cannot recommend it.

What I did make was a water tower, the drum was balsa planks glued round a cut down Pringles tube on a balsa platform, the supporting from being made from strips of wood. Very easy and quite sturdy but then it is based on a bit of 6mm MDF which adds a nice bit of strength, I suspect that the uprights might have been inserted into holes drilled into the MDF and then squared off to receive the uprights. I cannot remember but it is a technique I have used elsewhere and can recommend if you can accept the 6mm MDF base though it should also work with thinner material.

Za, if you ordered from 4Ground, I imagine you have some wagons inbound?  They're simply brilliant.  I think you'll see why I believe 4Ground is head and shoulders above everyone else.  Really squared away outfit.

Your signs look great, way better than the prototype stuff I have.  I guess again I can't complain because mine was free!  Glad to see Lee has done a lot of work upgrading his stuff.

I gave the, indeed very plain, roofs a lot of thought and then decided to just glue some coffee stirrers on them and add some sand to represent dust. It "breaks" the surface if you understand what I mean. And I can really recommend Sarissa buildings to anyone who wants to have good quality buildings for little money. With a little effort and paint they look great IMHO.

Yes I have some wagons coming my way. two of the bigger General Purpose Wagons and four (yes four) smaller ones. I can't wait to put them together and get them filled with the Ainstey scenery.

The sign from Tricity are just great, they look even better in real life then on my photos. The greatest thing of all is that you can ask for custom signs. They have a standard pack which I ordered but I just needed an Undertaker sign, which turned out beautifully. Good speedy service and very good value for money.
Painting them up was also easy, I darkened them with shoe polish, then drybrushed them with some cheap craft paint (burned umber), then drybrushed them again with brown mixed with white. Then I gave the signs a good black wash with make the letters pop out.

Yesterday I started painting up the Imex cacti I bought on Ebay. http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=602 (http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=602).
The cacti are great (the big and small ones), the rest is kind of useless unfortunately (way to small to be of any use). I will use the small cacti for basing the models bases. But still a lot of cacti for a fair amount of money.

Za

Thank you very much Tomitchoe.

Well things slowed down a bit the last week due to Christmas and a two year old girl with the flue. I did find the time to paint and weather the gallows, the cacti (they still need bases though) and a few tombstones I bought from Tricity.

gallows

cacti (not the best of pictures)

tombstones

the buildings nicely tucked away in the closet

I also started cleaning the Black Scorpion miniatures... I bought their resin miniatures at last Crisis and was very happy with them but now I am not sure, they need a lot of work and looking closer at them some of the casts aren't that brilliant. So a lot of sanding, swearing an greenstuffing ahead of me the next few days.

Za

Hey, how old are your resin mini's?

I bought some about a year ago - they were so horrible, I emailed Black Scorpion, complaining, and sold them off.  They shipped me a small sample of four "new" resin minis.  They're 15x better.  Clean, proper resin sculpts.  They apparently revamped their whole resin process.  The previous ones were chalky, flaked apart, had exposed wire guides etc.  This about ruined me since my Black Scorpion Old West guys were metals before (and fantastic).

I don't know how many you bought, but snap some pics, and I'll take a peek - see if they're the old ones.  The new ones are quite good.

Hi Elbows, I bought the miniatures a month ago and I'm just a little bid disappointed about the amount of time it takes to clean them. They are not bad but certainly not brilliant. A lot of filing and using the old greenstuff (I'm not that good at using greenstuff  :() Ah well just need to be patient (but again not good at being patient  ;D)

On the bright side about 10 minutes ago the doorbell rang and my order from 4ground arrived. On first glance  :-* :-* :-* :-*. I must say just over a week from ordering to my doorstep with christmas in between. Respect. Keep you updated

Thanx Mason

Well I mentioned the arrival of the 4ground wagons yesterday... My lord are they beautiful  :-* :o :-* yust gorgeous. I spend a few hours yesterday evening putting them together. They are so nice, everything fits perfectly together and there were some pretty good building guidelines included. If you want wagons buy the 4ground ones. For gameplay it is also very useful that 25mm bases fit in the wagons. For painting I think I just put some shoepolish on them and a bit of weathering. I just love the color of the burned MDF on them.

I also finished the cacti yesterday, I based them and put some ArmyPainter tuft on them. I never used the tuft before but I really like it.

Still in their packaging

If you need cacti I can recommend the Imex ones (the rest of the box content is useless beacause way to small, but the cacti make up for that).

Thank you for the compliments. I can certainly recommend the wagons they are just brilliant. For now I stick to these buildings. A good friend of mine, Groove51, just bought the Sarissa Hotel, Church and a few smaller buildings, so we will combine in the future. Also no horses and mules for now, I started on painting my models first. I played a few games with a finished town and very grey models  :D.

A western town really needs the gallows IMHO  ;)

I finally cleaned up some miniatures and started painting on the outlaws. The first three are finished and I found a little surprise in the bit box (inspirited by Digits cemetery).

I made up some rules for little Herman the Vulture:
If a miniature is wounded and comes within 1 inch of the Vulture role a D6.
On a roll of 1 the Vulture is attracted by the smell of blood and attacks. You suffer 1 wound.
On a roll of 6 the Vulture also attacks and he picks out an eye. For the rest of the game you have a -1 penalty fot shooting on the to hit chard.
On a roll of 2-5 the Vulture is startled by the sudden noise and flies away.

Groove51 and myself are also thinking about a weather list. Before beginning the game you have to roll on a weather chard with different types of weather. This is still under construction though.

Za

Yes please. Groove and I were just thinking about how cool it would be if a sandstorm would run through town, or very heavy rain :D. I just re-read the Bloodbowl weathers chart and it gave me some inspiration but I would like every input you guys can give me.

Great stuff!
That vulture is a nice touch.

I just couldn't get myself painting the outlaw gang and I wanted something easy to paint as a start and I remembered I own a "TombKing Screaming Catapult thinghy unit" with a vulture. I couldn't let that one pass. Although I have to admit I only remembered the vulture thanks to Digits graveyard (thanks about that  :D)

Ok. Vulture rules being added to my FfoL games.

:D Thanks for that. I just thought that the vulture needed some nice rules in the spirit of the rules you have on using civilians in the game. Groove51 and I really love your rules. It is the first game we played in many years in which we don't have arguments about the rules (which we usually solve with rolling a D6 and 1-3 would be option A an 4-6 would be option B). When in doubt we can manage with just some logic "what would they have done in real life..." .  They are straightforward, fun, open to your own tinkering, fast and easy. We played 4 games now and every time something nice and funny happened. We can play it now with only using the very good Quick reference sheet.

Za

It is a Black Scorpion Model actually. From the Tombstone 7 set. They don't seem to sell on their website though. I bought it as a metal set from Battlield Berlin a few weeks ago. Black Cat Bases also sell a lot of animals. They also do nice dogs.

Hi All,
It has been a while, lost some of the mojo on this project but yesterday Groove and I did a little game of Ffol and the mojo came back. I'm currently painting the Ainsty detritus. I also finished the Weather Chart (still open for suggestions though) and added some rules for the dog "Old Woofer"

Regards,
Za

Weather Chart:
Roll a D6 at the beginning of the game.

1: It is a nice sunny day in Ol’ Hickory Flat.

2: A major sandstorm hits Hickory flat. After a long dry spell the winds pick up and Hickory flat disappears under a cloud of sand. Visibility is next to nothing.
Apply the following penalties for shooting*.
- Add +1 for to hit on short range (6+)
- Add +2 for to hit on long range (10+)
*The penalties do not apply inside buildings.

3: Its raining cats and dogs. After the last dry spell it finally started to rain but the rainfall is very heavy this year turning the dry streets of Hickory flat into enormous mud pools.
Apply the following penalties for movement*:
- All movement is -1”.
- You can only move once per turn. The mud makes running impossible.
* The penalties do not apply on solid ground i.e. inside or on top of buildings and on pavements.

4: Dawn. It is early morning and it won’t be long before sunrise. It is still dark though in round 1 and 2.
Apply the following penalties for shooting*:
- Add +1 on the to hit rolls in turn 1 and 2 (6+/9+).
* It is very early in the morning so all the shops are closed (and dark) even the Saloon and the Sheriff's Office. The penalties also apply inside buildings.

5: Dusk. It is late in the afternoon and it won’t be long before dusk sets in. It will be dark from round 3.
Apply the following penalties for shooting*:
- Add +1 on the to hit rolls in turn 1 and 2 (6+/9+).
* The shops close in round 3 so the building will be dark. Apply the penalties inside buildings. Note that the Saloon and the Sheriff's Office are in full business and are fully lid so the penalties do not apply inside the Saloon and the Sheriffs Office.

6: It is a nice sunny day in Ol’ Hickory Flat.

Herman the Vulture:
If a miniature is wounded and comes within 1" of the Vulture role a D6.

Finished painting the detritus. This is the last of the distractions... I have to start painting me some Cowboys.

Some barrels, Sacks and crates. I glued them into the carts. The one bottom right needed the base finished (which I did in the mean time  ;)).

Some "fresh" fruit, veggies and fish for the store (again glued to the cart)

The town safely tucked away in the cupboard  :D.

Now it is time for some sleep  ;D and I will try to start work on the Earps tomorrow/today  lol

Beautiful work!  Now let's see some proper cowboys and such!

Thanx Elbows, the Ainsty stuff is very good and it adds something to the table. Cowboys are next because I have a finished town but almost no inhabitants... Hickory Flat is a ghost town right now  8) Anyone know how to make some tumbleweed  lol

Great stuff, Za.
Those small 'filler' pieces of terrain are what really helps bring a table to life.
 :-*

Between yourself and the other fellas on here, you have made me take the plunge.
Some Cowboys were bought a while ago and last week saw me purchase the town of Angel Falls from Bobble.
I will be making some small alterations during the next month to make it all fit into my terrain set-up and will post it up when its done.
And, of couse, add some more to it!

You are all very bad boys on this board.

Thanks, all the detritus is very nice but I also like the fruit and fish the most. You will see it in the flesh soon  :D. After the last game the outlaws sought shelter in the saloon and your Pinkerton will have to drive us out to get your gols back  ;).

I hope to start some work on the buildings soon, as the lack of good light makes it difficult for my eyes to handle painting miniatures, but buildings are easier being so big.
 ;)

As for Cowboys: i went for some foot and mounted Foundry figures being sold on the Bazaar.
A little on the small side, but should be fine.

I absolutely agree with the detritus being a huge component to fleshing a table out.  I always set up my tables in a certain order: terrain (hills/rivers, etc.)...major buildings...then major foliage and then detritus to flush it all out.

I have the same ainsty stuff and have done mine up in a very similar fashion.

Mason, I have some left over Black Scorpion Cowboys. They are resin and to be honest not the best of casts (that is why I bought them again in metal  lol). It are 12 or 13 miniatures and 1 is missing a hand. You can have them if you like. PM me your address and I will put them in an envelope (just refund me the postage).

Very nice PJ on the detritus Elbows. I see we both like our apples in red  lol. Love the idea of the market stand type of table.

Za,

Sucks that you got some of the poor-resin cowboys.  I did too - sold them all, and just re-ordered in the new resin (much better).  If they ship me old-resin ones, I'll be returning them.  Black Scorpion was good about sending me a free pack of 4 miniatures to show me the new resin.  The old ones I purchased were nothing short of...white, chalky and crumbly.

The new ones are more Forgeworld - darker grey and much better casts/quality.  I still don't like resin, but my latest order basically gives me almost the entire Black Scorpion range. (gulp)

The irony is that I too have that stuff from Ainsty (food in crates pack).
I bought it last year at SELWG for 1920's Strange Aeons and Pulp gaming, but I had better base in such a way as to be used in any genre, as it can be.
Good thing that I had not gotten around to it yet.

Ainstey is the best. I took some photo's. Off course after the game because I forgot to take some during the game.
Not that good in writing AAR's sorry...

In the middle of the board there was a stranded card with gold. Groove51 played the Pinkerton trying to take the gold to the bank, TBC the Indians and I played the Outlaws. The objective was to pick up as many loot as possible and take it to the nearst table edge. Groove and I dashed towards the loot and killing each other in the mean time. TBC was more patient and killed us one by one and the Indians took the loot and the women (without suffering any casualties). Lets just call it beginners luck ::). Just to let you know, not one peace of gold left the board  lol.

Those look great! I definitely need to start acquiring some extra bits for Calamity.

Thank you, but be careful before you know it you bought a lot more then you might have anticipated  lol

Those luggage are so nice that they're now on my "shopping list". Nice work with them Za.

Thank you, just drop 6milphil a PM it was a nice and quick purchase.

Finally I got my figure painting mojo back (well sort off), so I finished a few civilians for a game coming up this weekend. The pictures were taken with to much light (they did get a coat of matt varnish, it just doesn't show :D)but I hope you like them anyway. C&C more them welcome.

I need a drink Ace...

Thank you all for the kind remarks.

The mailman brought me some nice packages today. Some nice shingles from war-bases.co.uk. (cheap as hell but very nice and useful) So spend most of the day putting shingles onto my sloped roofs. Fiddly job but it really makes a difference, will take some pictures this week if I have time. I also received my Sarissa train station and corner hotel. The station is already put together and is patiently waiting for some paint  :D. The hotel is a really big kit and it looks like you need to have some patience to put it together  :( Which I lack. I will restrain myself and will finish the station first.

Oh and I can officially claim to be a owner of a cow herd of some 50 cows  o_o

I really like your paint work on the Undertaker but within the context of the Old West he really looks out of place. He would fit in much better in a 1920-1930 era pulp game. I think its that his coat is a little to short and he should be wearing a vest. He just looks to modern for my tastes. Still great work!

Bullethead

Thank you very much Bullethead.

@Mason The Undertacker is perfectly sutible for Strange Aeons (BUY IT, BUY IT  :D)

I have been busy the last week with a lot of different things for Hickory Flat.

In the first place I finished another model.

Billy Bob

He is versatile because he can be used as an outlaw a bum or some poor cowboy.

Secondly I mentioned earlier that I bought some shingles from Warbases. I did the Undertaker with it and I like the finish. Much better than the lasered 2D effect that it had originally.

I also received my ERTL cows. I am halfway through filling my Corral. I just removed the worst flash and gave them a wash of Gerophone Sephia, or whatever it is called. (Mind you not all of the cows are finished in the pictures).

I also received my package from Sarissa with the Corner Hotel :D and the station. I restrained myself and started with the station (actually I am a bit scared of the Hotel. It is a big kit and very beautiful and I don't want to screw it up). I ran out of luck because I didn't buy enough shingles  >:( so one half of the main roof is without shingles... It is a very lovely kit.

And finally I have to use a bigger table for all of the buildings to fit. So I tinkered around today with a possible layout on a 2X4 table. The train is a 6 euro toy I just couldn't leave behind in the shop  ;) In the second picture is the ground-floor of the Corner Hotel.

As always C&C is more then welcome.

Well that is it for this week. Tomorrow (actually today  lol) Groove51 and myself will visit TooBooCoo to play one or two games of Fist Full of Lead. I will try to remember to take some pictures.

Thank you Elbows. He is from a BlackScorpion set no longer made (Tombstone 7 IIRC). Well it is not on their website anymore. There is also a dog, a paperboy, a drunk and a guy with a guitar in it. It is a shame because it is a nice set. I bought it a few months ago from Battlefieldberlin, they retail BS and I emailed them if they had any miniatures in metal left. This was one of the sets I could buy in metal.

this is the dog in the set.

That was quite an update, Za!

The Bum (I think that name suits him best...) is a lovely sculpt, gotta love those strides, has a great paintjob and those cows work perfectly.
 :-*
Ertl, you say?
Have to keep an eye open for some.
 ;)

The Undertakers does look so much better with those shingles.
 :-*

Have you thought of making some shingles yourself?
A simple matter of some card strips and cutting out the odd angles.
 ;)

That station and hotel are on my list of possible future purchases.
The way you fellas are going I will probably be corrupted into buying everything anyway, so I do not know why I am bothering to say 'possible'.....

@ Mason: Thank you very much for the compliments. About the shingles, they came lasercut on an A4 sheet of cardboard for only 2 pounds. As I have a busy job and family life I tend to make the hobby as easy as possible and for this kind of money I just thought to give it a try. http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=107_119 (http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=107_119). It was a win win situation. very cheap, saved a lot of time and just a brilliant product  :D.

The cows I bought from ebay, they are only available from the states. They are useful but they are cheap plastic farm toys... but put close together they look nice enough. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PACKAGE-of-25-1-64-S-Scale-ERTL-HEREFORD-Cows-Calfs-Cattle-NIP-/400459744840?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item5d3d42c648 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PACKAGE-of-25-1-64-S-Scale-ERTL-HEREFORD-Cows-Calfs-Cattle-NIP-/400459744840?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item5d3d42c648)

And like Elbows said... STOP RESISTING BUY A LOT OF OLD WEST AND BLAME ME  lol

@ Treebeard: Thank you and yes there is more to come. This started a few months ago as a smallish project and it just seems to keep growing...

@Bellygrub: I am glad I could inspire you. I would love to see your work here on LAF

TooBooCoo, Groove51 and myself had a great game today. TBC made some pictures (as I forgot my camera off course  o_o) as soon as I get them in I will post a short AAR. It was a real fun game with some brilliant twists and turns (and a brutal murder on a damsel in distress)...

The shingle certainly adds something as well, another job to add the list!

Za: I AM going to give in soon, no doubt about that.

Now watching those cows on my ebay and fully sympathise with the time issue regarding the shingle.
At that price it would be criminal to say no!

Once the small matter of Salute and smattering of VSF Japanese are out of the way I shall be making a move into making some scenery for Old West to add to the buildings that I recently bought.

I think that you may be surprised how quickly my town will come together once I get started.

Here is a picture of them painted.

Today we played a game of Fist Full of Lead. Last time TBC won with his indians and Groove (playing Pinkerton) and I (playing Outlaws) got beaten. We decided to continue this "scenario" this game.

TBC and his Indians captured the two women and the loot and hide in the saloon (bad call... firewater...). The Pinkerton and the Outlaw entered from the other table sides. The Pinkerton wanted to rescue the women I wanted the gold...
To make a long story short. The Outlaws entered the saloon an masse and the indians seemed to be all drunk. TBC rolled 10 to 15 ones on shooting resulting in as many reloads (taking a full turn to reload so that is really really bad). It was hilarious. The Pinkerton also screwed up and it seemed like the Outlaws would win the day.... But then the chances took a turn to the worst. I wanted to "clean" the room and one of the hostages was in the way. I shot her and rolled a maximum damage (full-blown headshot)... bad for the karma. From that moment on the Indians sobered up and shot the Outlaws one by one. The Pinkerton managed to rescue the other hostage but in the end they also got killed by the Indians... again. (bad luck in close combat there Groove)
Most hilarious moment was when one of the Pinkerton got wounded within 1" of Herman the Vulture which meant he smelled blood. Groove rolled a six and the Pinkerton lost his eye to Herman, we named him One Eyed Jack.

In the end the Indians killed us all again and still own Hickory Flat. It took them a few rounds to get sobered up but then they hit everything.
We had a lot of fun and it was a great game. I must admit I am not that good at writing AAR's but I hope I captured the most important moments of the game.

TBC took some quick pictures (Thanks for that). Just to give you an idea about the layout.

the start of the game, where the Pinkerton are behind the buildings on the right and the Outlaws advance on the left towards the Saloon.

It is getting crowded in the Saloon.

All in all a really nice game and we had a blast.

Za

I declare this an 'Ingin Town now!

I must admit, there were a few moments when my drunk Braves just couldn't manage to load more than one round in the rifles... but then they got the show rollin!

It was a great game, and first I thought the Outlaws would do me in, and then when a wounded One Eye Jack decided to slap around one of the Braves.... things could have turned against me again... But all was 'saved', but not if you ask the town folks... >:)

Thanks for a great game guys!

If ever there were a case of "this town ain't big enough for the...three of us..." that was it!  Sounds like a good time.  I love One Eyed Jack.  Whenever possible, I like the "creation" of characters by accident and I like using them in future adventures.  The Old West was unique in that it was very possible to run into the same folks months or years apart - just by pure luck, so why not?

I know, late to the party, but I just have to say -  half way through with filling your corral with cattle?  Looks pretty full to me.  But not for long.  One of them "dawgies" is going to push some of those boards out and then they'll be heading from greener pastures.  Now don't go rebuilding, but beef cattle are strong enough to push those boards out, nails and all, and then there will be hell to pay.  That's why corrals are built with the boards on the side of the post closest to the cows - so they don't push the boards out.  Well, actually, the better corrals had boards on both sides of the posts.  And, yeah, I've been doing my research.

But otherwise, nice work as always.

The town wasn't big enough and I got kicked out for the second time. The animals and civilians in the game get involved as our models get within 1" of them. We roll a D6 and a 1 is mostly negative and a 6 positive (except for the vulture... he just loves blood). One Eyed Jack has a -1 on to hit rolls for the rest of his (short) life  lol.

Maybe I'm just cheap, but I don't understand why gamers don't make their own buildings anymore.  I have been soundly bitten by Old West Fever, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay decent money for buildings.  I can see spending the money if it is a club project or a demo game for a show, but for a weekly get togehter, I'd rather spend the money on more figures.
Just my few cents for what they are worth.

I hand build a lot of stuff, but the pre-made buildings save me a lot of time --- and I don't think I'd save much money buying the materials and spending the time making them.  The quality is often quite a bit better than what I'd manage.

Unless it's an interest of yours - you don't save much actual money.

When I get the time.... my plan is to make a bit more of a 'ghost town' 'abandoned town' that looks a little more decrepit.  I lived in Arizona and have some great pictures of abandoned towns that are perfect inspiration.  That said, I think I can really only do it by scratch build....

I personally have very limited time for the hobby, and the MDF buildings I've purchased are a doodle to put together and they look so much better than anything I could scratchbuild, never mind having to invest much more time.

I DO really appreciate scratchbuilt terrain, some people are amazing at it, but I would like to have time to play as well...

Saying that, I've done some very basic ruins and other stuff for my Post-Apocalyptic gaming that I'm very happy with, but at the moment, Sarissa and Battle Flag are more than welcome to have my hard earned money.  :D

I suppose there are a few differences.
1. I am retired, so I have the time
2. I use terrain building as a breather from figure painting or when I am waiting for figures.
3. I am cheap, I will actually make my own cactus from pipe cleaner and tumble weed from lichen.

Nick you are not cheap  :D and if I had the time I would make my own town.... But for me there are a few pro/cons.

Cons: Own builds are more fun and yes you can really call it your own town but it takes a lot of time to scratch build a town. (which I don't have)

Pro's: It saves time (I have a two year old toddler a busy job and my wife has an even more busy job) The time the Sarissa buildings save me is more then double worth the money.
The lasered building are really really nice.
I have no scratch build talent whatsoever  lol

Its like Elbows says. Its more of a time issue than not wanting to build your own town.

Za

Hi all,

it has been a few weeks... Real life took over with two funerals, the flu and an ear infection  :-[.
Finally I found some time to start things again. I finished some more detritus and the train station.

Some nice woodpiles from Ainstey

Looking at them I thought I can do that myself so here are some homemade piles waiting for some paint

I finished the station... I slightly overdone the weathering IMHO but then again we are in a desert  :D

And some impatient civilians waiting for the train.

C&C as always more then welcome.

Next up is putting together the corner hotel. I just gave the ground-floor some shoe-polish and a wash of bedab black.

Regards,
Za

Your work is very good.
I You allow for a tiny comment.
I understand that the walls are meant to be painted in red paint and the roof tiles are shingles/shakes.
In this case, unless I am unfamiliar with the habit of painting shingles, if the shingles are meant to be natural weathered wood color, they should be weathered darker and greyish, not reddish. Plus the red tones are too close and they make a blocked visual of the whole building, instead of stressing the composition. If they were painted, this would probably be a different colour alltogether or the same red tone, not a different one.
So it puzzles a bit

@Gutbukkit and @Mason Thanks for the kind comments.

@former user Thanks for the compliment and yes you are right about the shingles they are a bit to reddish. Normally I use a very dark GW brown (Rhinox Hide or something it is called  o_o... who comes up with these names anyhow) but the bottle was empty and I used the darkest brown I've got by Army Painter. It unfortunately turned out more reddish then dark brown. Maybe I repaint them when I buy some new Rhinox Hide...

Shingles painted with Rhinox Hide as a base color

that'd be much better
You could dilute black wash and add a drop of blue and then give it ochre and white drybrush
would bring the building out better

Fantastic stuff Za!

Thank you very much Shawnt.

I want to thank you former user, I felt there was something amiss with the station and I thought it was the weathering but as you said it was the color of the roof. I faced the minions in the local GW store (no I don't want the starter box for The Hobbit  >:( I just want some paint) and bought some Rhinos Hide and immediately repainted the roof and the result is much better.

I had  a lot of work to do this weekend (correction work as I am a teacher) and I started a little project to avoid work... o_o lol (don't worry I finished the corrections just now).

On page one of this thread I mentioned I ruined the Sarissa water tower  >:( It was just to flimsy. Now that my train station is up and running I decided I really need a water tower so I scratch build one using some glue, paper, and some coffee stirrers. This is the result and I must say for a quick build (1 hour or so) without a plan it turned out quite OK (it is just a tad on the big side being slightly bigger than the Sarissa one).

Hope you like it C&C as always more then welcome

Thanks guys for the compliments on the water tower, it was a nice little project and I'm getting more and more pleased about it.

I just played a game of FFOL this afternoon and Groove and I had tons of fun. I made a different set-up for my town. I made the following table.

The train station, water tower and the HF Corral

I played the Outlaws and Groove played his Pinkerton lead by one eyed Jack (lost his eye to the vulture in an earlier game). My objective was to steal the cattle and the Pinkerton had to stop me.

I made a template that made it possible to play inside the train carriage.

The game was hilarious mostly because there was a possibility of a stampede.

The Stampede rules:
If shots are fired within 2" of the Corral or if shots are fired into the Corral role a D6.
On a roll of 2-5 nothing happens
On a roll of 1 and 6 the cows panic and there is a stampede.

Roll a D3, this is how wide the stampede is. (I use 40mm Hexbases so on a 3 the stampede is 3 hexes broad.)
Than roll a scatter die and a D10. The cows run D10"
If the cows run into miniatures roll a D6, on a 6 the miniature jumps into safety just in time. on a 1-5 roll on the to wound chart.

(I hope this all makes sense, it worked for us though  lol big time  lol)

In turn one the outlaw stormed the train and stunned the Pinkerton sniper on the water tower.
In side the train the outlaws reeked havoc with some very well placed shotgun shots. Billy Bob rushed to the Corral to steal some cows. another outlaw was on the roof of the train and shot a Pinkerton through the roof inside the train. Then my luck changed. Another outlaw jumped of the train and broke his foot and was stunned. The pinkerton started shooting at Billy Bob inside the Corral and you guessed it the cows panicked... Resulting an a STAMPEDE.
Both Billy Bob and another outlaw fled the board when confronted with a horde of cows coming towards them.

In the end the Pinkerton saved the cattle and all the outlaws fled or were killed. It was a blast of a game.

Here are some action pictures.

It was a very fun game, it took about 60 minutes from start to finish. We both played a 5 men team and after each round we randomized  movement for the civilians. It got real bloody real soon  :D
The game before this we played with three persons, each with 5 miniatures and it took about 2 and a half hours.

The signs are from TryCitylaser. They sell their stuff on Etsy.com.

It has been a while since my last post. Work took over and there was little hobby time. Today Groove51 came over and we played two brilliant games.
He played his Pinkerton again and I played my outlaw gang again under the lead of Earl-Ray.

Game 1:
The Pinkerton captured Earl's girlfriend Shotgun Sally. They are bringing her in by evening train. The Pinkerton have to escort Sally to the Sheriff's office. Once there she will be hanged the next day. She is sentenced to death for shooting the Sheriff.
Earl rounded up his gang to free Sally.

The train with Shotgun Sally arrived at the Hickory Flat station.

Earl-Ray to the rescue.

But unfortunately Earl and his gang couldn't stop the Pinkerton from escorting Sally to the sheriff's office.

Angry Earl retreated with the remainder of his gang and made some plans to stop Sally from getting hanged.

Game 2:

Save Sally from the Gallows.

Sally is being escorted to the gallows.

Earl and his gang enter the town.

The Pinkerton shoot their way to the gallows with Sally.

Unfortunately Earl came to late (again) and Sally got hanged by 'one eyed Jack'. He has to find a new girlfriend.

But Groove: be aware Earl will be back and he will be after the loved ones of the Pinkerton.

All in all again two brilliant games with some brilliant twists and turns.

My holiday starts next week so first up on the to-do list is building the Sarissa Corner Hotel. Next is painting some miniatures ;D

Great thread, Za! Where'd you get that train?

The train is a 6 Euro toy from a shop called "Action". I just gave it a spray of matt varnish to isolate the factory paint and dry-brushed it with some browns and greys.

I finally started on the Sarissa corner hotel i bought a few months ago. It is a beast of a building and quite a tricky build. So I took my time and thought it through properly. I am quite pleased with the finish. It is a real eye catcher. It will also be the last building for Hickory Flat (or so I promised myself  lol).

I have been waiting for someone to sell this kit to me and you have certainly done that.
The attention to detail has certainly paid off.
Now, I have always had a reservation about using too much MDF pre-made stuff in my (planned) town, but you may well have just twisted my arm enough on this one to make me go MDF over scratchbuilt adobe for the saloon.

That looks great! Wish I'd bought that for my saloon instead of the scratch build I am stalled half way through finishing. Love the wallpaper. Is it home printed or preprinted craft paper? I've found some paper in the shop where I work with a similar pattern I was going to use on mine. Fantastic job.

Thanks Mason. This saloon delivers great value for money and makes a great centerpiece on the table.

Gutbukkit. the wallpaper I found on a blog and I just printed it on normal paper. I glued the paper on the wood with a glue stick.

Thank you very much TBC, I hope we will have a nice game tomorrow.

Great set up you've got there. Good job on the corner saloon too.

With this setup I can play the train-station setup on a 2X2 table and a small town setup on a 2X2. Tomorrow I am going to play the whole town on a 2X4 table. Like this (sorry for the crappy picture)

Quick and easy is what I like cos I don't want to see another coffee stirrer again (well for a little while anyway)! My original interior plan was wooden planking but I'm going stir crazy sticking those darned things in. Pun absolutely intended.

Well..... it seems that the Bad Boys of Sage rode into Hickory Flats and took over....

The boys not only put down the gang that formerly controlled the town, but those Pinkerton detectives that arrived by train at the same time we arrived....left on the next train in pine boxes....

GREAT game guys!

The boys not only put down the gang that formerly controlled the town, but those Pinkerton detectives that arrived by train at the same time we arrived....left on the next train in pine boxes....

GREAT game guys!

Aaargh I'll be back. The town will be mine again.

Last week I kicked the Pinkerton out of Hickory Flat, resulting in a lawless town. Problem was that more gangs entered the town and "One Eyed Jack" got away and rounded up some fresh Pinkerton. I was fighting a battle on two sides.

Here the train with the fresh Pinkerton arrived:

One Pinkerton took the high-ground (and was useless for the rest of the game  ;))

Earl Ray's gang headed for the station to kill some Pinkerton.

TBC's gang captured the General Store and wanted to shoot off Earls gang one by one. Unfortunately for them Earl sent his trusty Mexican friend "El Gaffe" around the back with a stick of dynamite  :D resulting in one death and two wounded and pinned.

That was the end of the good luck for Earls gang. The Pinkerton killed two (including "Billy Bob")

In the end Earl was the only one left alive of the gang. "One Eyed Jack" tried to kill him in hand to hand combat. Although Earl was mortally wounded he won the combat. TBC also sent a hoodlum in close combat with Earl but Earl won again. Finally he was shot... and the town is still lawless because the last Pinkerton were also killed by TBC's gang.

It was a fun game with some nice twists and turns. (loved the dynamite and close combat gents  lol)

Za

We had tons of fun and it is so much more cool to play on a fully set-up (painted) table. We actually talked about it last Thursday that in the old days we had empty bottles and coke cans as scenery. I like the fact that scenery is much more rated now. And I love the fact that there are more and more manufacturers around that offer nice scenery for a nice amount of money ( being a father of a 2 year old toddler I don't always have the time to scratch build.) The Sarissa buildings offered a nice base and I spruced it up a bit.

Mason, it's even more beautiful in person!  Za and Groove are great competitiors.

Thank you very much for the nice compliment. About being a great competitor: It is about having a good time and a lot of laughter not about winning. If it was about winning I would be a very cranky person  lol.

Finally another update. With Mason going so fast I can't keep behind can I  ;)

In november I bought the 4Ground Building Under Construction. Yesterday I stuck it together and gave it a light weathering and a home made boarding in front of the building. I kind of like the natural wood so I don't think I put more paint on the building. It is a "new" building so the wood is still fresh.

It is a nice two story building though it was a bit fiddly to put together, especially the roof.

Hope you like the building... This really, really, really is the last building in the town of Hickory Flat, I promise  :D

Howdy...

So Life had some big twist and turns for the past one and a half year. So hobby wise nothing big happened and I did not visit LAF. I am catching up now and picked up my paint brush (even thinking about entering LPL10). I finished some models, cows and a wagon with some victims in it. (I have more in store but they are entering the LPL so you have to be patient. All in all Hickory Flat just came back to life  :D.

A drunk, a priest and the store owner:

I paint them with brown shoe polish (the brand is KIWI) and then give them a wash of Army painter strong tone (not the dip but the wash). Then a grey dry brush to represent dust.

Post by: Za Zjurman on January 23, 2016, 02:06:32 PM
A very small update... but one can never have enough doggies in town. I made a special rule for them during play (Ffol).

A dog is a best mans friend:
If a miniature comes within 1” of the dog role a D6.
On a roll of 1 apply the ‘a dog is a best mans friend’ rule. The dog will accompany you for the remainder of the game. In close combat you add +1 to your die roll.
On a roll of 6 the dog bites you in the leg. You get a -1” penalty on movement for the remainder of the game.
On a roll of 2-5 the dog is startled by your presence and runs D10” in random direction (scatter).

Thanks guys. I love a little bit of randomness in the games to. I also have a rule for my vulture.

Herman the Vulture:
If a miniature is wounded and comes within 1” of the Vulture role a D6.
On a roll of 1 the Vulture is attracted by the smell of blood and attacks. You suffer 1 wound.
On a roll of 6 the Vulture also attacks and he picks out an eye.
For the rest of the game you have a -1 penalty for shooting on the to hit chard.
On a roll of 2-5 the Vulture is startled by the sudden noise and flies away.

cheers

Excellent to see you back posting.

I read your thread a few months ago and really enjoyed it.

Just a question on the kiwi shoe polish, when I last polished shoes kiwi was a wax polish, doesn't it repel the water based washes, the army painter wash is water based I think.

Thanks to Mason  ;) I had to make some lampposts. I ordered some lamps from eBay and chopped up some matchsticks. In total I made 6 single posts and 4 double ones.

Here are some pictures:

Unprimed:

Primed (crappy picture):

Hope you like them.

C&C more then welcome.

Very cool, I have some of those lamps on order too and was considering adding some of those to my current lamps as well.  Brilliant minds think alike!  Looking good.

Thanks Elbows. The lamps are biggish but not to big. Just gave them the first coat of paint. Hope to finish them soon. They are a squirrel project because I really should be painting for the LPL  ::)

cheers

I have some on order too, and will probably do something very similar at some point (or not.... ::)).
These ones look great, ZZ, and I shall be watching your progress with interest.

They must be surprised in China. A sudden surge in sales of Lamps.  lol

The first two Lamp Posts are finished. Not bad for an afternoons work.

Not the best of pictures but no daylight and a dying camera battery:

In hindsight they could have been a cm or 2 shorter  :?.

You just need someone with long arms to light then lol lol

Extra clutter is always good, makes the board more believable, have you had any games in your town recently?

It has been a while... I painted these up for the LPL 10 at the beginning of this year. More to come (hopefully). I got some painting mojo back.

Good to see you posting again, your town was a great inspiration to me and a western town is I think the next thing for me to start, once I have finished my Dark Age village.

Could do with some game reports to keep the enthusiasm high. How are you fixed :P
