Here's my take on the Hylas-and-the-Nymphs theme from Blackwolf's project. I hope I changed it around enough so noone is offended by this bland stealing of ideas ::)
It is intended to go on my industrial table (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=20523.0) from a few years back. Anyway, here are the first few pictures.
Basic construction without any nymphs. Pump, tank and pipes are resin casts, but I did the masters, so they should probably count 8)

And another picture, complete with half-naked girls splashing around.

You guessed it, the water will be all dirty and full of goo and other stuff. The modelling challenge with regard to the contest theme will be the splashing (well, shambling quickly towards this Hylas character) of the girls, as well as one or two jets coming from the pump.

Bloody hell, Jens! :-*
-
Great idea Jens. I am sure it will be lovely.
-
A very interesting take 8)
Who are the minis by, please?
-
lol Brilliant!
-
I bet this will be weird :)
-
Awesome idea, Jens, silly and brilliant :)

A very interesting take 8)
Who are the minis by, please?
Zombie vixens I think Steve.
-
You've got a bit of a sick mind there :D.
Can't wait to see the finished piece...
-
Off to a good start, it's gonna be a corker 8)
cheers
James

Yes, zombie vixens. I just bought a box for my swimming pool build too. They are pretty gruesome. I need to model a rubber ring around one.
-
Looking good.
:)
-
Thumbs up! I was hoping someone would do water nymphs or industrial spill. I did however not foresee the combination. A splendid idea.
-
That's gonnae be good!!! :o
-
Really look forward to what you will be doing... ;D
C'mon, splash it Baby...!
-
Very promising ... ;D
-
Coolest of ideas that!
-
Thanks, people!
In the meantime, I have replaced the Styrodur base construction with something made from MDF. I haven't entirely settled on what material to use for the water, and without Styrodur, the options of either using something solvent-based or this hot-melt stuff are still open.
Started painting the machinery bits as well:

Different angle. You can see Hylas on the cork in the right-hand corner (one of my own mediochre miniatures, slightly converted).

The final layout of pump, pipes and tank is still not settled. At the moment, everything is still blutacked together for me to play around with ;D

And a close-up of the rungs that lead onto the platform. I used staples for that, pretty easy to do. The handle bar is made from brass wire, bent into shape and inserted into pre-drilled holes.

Next: more wheathering, and stuff in the pool 8)

Ooh, that's so great :-*
-
Great conception,lovely!
-
I'm really liking what I'm seeing, Jens :)
Knowing your previous standards, this will be extraordinary :-*
-
Ürgs, 3 weeks with almost no visible progress, and only one day to go...
Slowly getting there nonetheless. Here are the girls in various stages of completion:

And a shot of the overall layout.

Obviously, the water is still missing, which worries me a bit, since there is no time to experiment - the first try will have to do. Wish me luck o_o
-
:o
This is looking really good as it is.
:-*
Good luck with the water.
It deserves to come out well.
:)
-
I've been too scared till now to try water effects for the same reason - but the construction is GREAT! good luck for everything!
-
oh, boy, that's so amazing!
-
That's too good :-*
-
Dam! That's good!! :o
-
Much better job on the vixens than the ones I've done for my entry. I went for a blotchy purple due to the water immersion. The lighter colour looks loads better. Then I melted them with varnish :)
-
Looking extremely good as always, Jens! :-*
Damn, this competition will be a tough one with so many fine entries!
-
Thanks, people!
I couldn't resist to take a few more pictures of today's progress :)
Dry-fitting the ladies:

Closeup of the pipe. Water was made from fishing line coated with PVA; I had hoped to produce something transparent, but in the end it became a standard drybrush, covered with high-gloss varnish :? Still looks ok-ish, I think.

And now the moment you've all been waiting for: water! I settled for the Noch hot-melt stuff, mainly because Mrs Zafarelli still had some left over from a diorama project, and it is not as smelly as the polyester stuff (my second option). Don't really like it though. It needs to be heated to 180°C, and I burnt my fingers even though I was wearing thick leather working gloves (had to soothe them with a cold bottle of beer ;D). It also doesn't flow too well, and produces a noticable "lens effect" around the miniatures and the walls. Dying is apparently only possible with the appropriate Noch stuff; I tried acrylics, which produced little lumps and a lot of foam. So I settled for several layers of hot-melt water, each one covered with a layer of acrylic washes. I used the GW variety, and am fairly pleased with the result.

And a final overall shot:

I'll spend the rest of the night adding ripples, waves and splashing produced by the bathing ladies, and some other last minute addtions. I hope I won't get disqualified for being too diorama-ish. It's still supposed to go on my industrial table, you know ;)
-
Superb Jens :-*
I think it's going to be between you and Blackwolf... ;)
-
Fantastic :-* :-*
cheers
James

Phenomenal entry, absolutely love it!
-
I really love this :-* so similar to my entry, and yet so different; fantastic!
-
Excellent – just love the water. :o
Blodwin
-
Impossibly cool!
-
:o :o :o
Bloody amazing!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Wow.
This really looks the part, man!
I would not worry about getting disqualified because this piece is supposed to be used on a gaming table, is it not? I really look forward to see the finished piece!
-
Looks absolutely amazing!
-
sweet piece.
Love the chemical swirl in the water.

Disaster struck this morning, when I tried to speed up the drying time of the sculpted waves using an infrared lamp. Stupid as I am, I placed it vertically in front of the lamp. Of course, the main body of water started to melt again (hot-melt, remember? I didn't.), and almost flowed out of the basin. I noticed it just in time, so the worst could be prevented, but I was pretty appalled by the result. Thankfully, another half-hour under the infra-red lamp mended most of the damage, and also produced a few rather nice effects in the water.
Anyway, pictures are sent. I refrain from posting another teaser picture and contend myself with looking forward to see all the end results next week 8)
