Title: Shoot N' Skedaddle - SNS PDF version available for $7, rules free online.
Post by: Elbows on December 16, 2012, 10:20:42 AM
I tried out my own Old West rules set tonight.  It worked great...and I actually had a good time, even playing solo!

I've temporarily named the rules set Shoot N' Skedaddle...and don't ask why...no reason.  Here are a couple pictures.  Ignored the red tokens - they're wound markers.  I have a bunch of proper markers on the way.  I originally built this Old West terrain and painted up some 30+ models for LOTOW...but it became abysmally boring.  I hope to keep playtesting these rules, as they are quick, and a blast.

Note:  Because this was a simple playtest, I skipped putting furniture in all of the buildings.  This adds a bit, but I was being lazy!

The table, 6'x4'.

The scenario:

Lawmen have been holding David Sloan (wanted thief, murderer, and defiler of women) in a hotel near the Sheriff's office, under guard.  It is the morning of his hangin'.  The local Business Tycoon (crime boss) has come searching for Mr. Sloan, who works for him.

Game Notes: My game can be played using random cards.  In this instance, I used my random cards (currently on the way to me, so I used the "random" function in my photo gallery to "draw" cards) to determine a crew of 6 individuals for each side, Lawmen and Outlaws.  I drew the characters, and then drew random weapon cards...then picked appropriate models.

Left to Right - Lawmen:
Townsperson w/ twin heavy six guns.
Gunslinger w/ twin six guns.
Cowboy w/ six gun
US Marshal w/ heavy six gun
Townsperson w/ six gun.
Cowboy w/ Derringer and sawed off shotguns.

Left to Right - Outlaws:
Cowboy w/ six gun.
Townsperson w/ six gun.
Cowboy w/ sawed off shotgun.
Business Tycoon w/ carbine.
David Sloan (starts game under arrest) w/ six gun
Hired Gun w/ twin six guns (the Business Tycoon brings a free Hired Gun to your posse - hence 7 models instead of 6)
Cowboy w/ twin heavy six guns

Lawmen start in top floor of hotel, with gallows across the board.  They must move David Sloan to the gallows and hang him.  David Sloan can reduce the movement of the Lawmen by struggling (something he did quite well!)

Outlaws start in two groups of three (not included David Sloan in custody!)...each at a road entrance to the board.

I was using my reproduction Old West playing cards which just arrived..pretty slick!

OUTCOME:
It was an absolute slaughter.  David Sloan put up a serious fuss, and they only made it halfway to the gallows.  In the meantime though, almost every other model was wounded, and the Outlaws were cut down by better dice rolling, and serious firepower.  In these pictures...ignore the red markers, as they're simply wound markers.  The game played fast, smoothly, and fun.  Because only 13 models were involved I kept "special" cards to a minimum, with only one special card per turn for each side.  A turn involves two activation cards for each model.  During the game, the only one of note was that a Townsperson joined the Lawmen during the height of a firefight.  He fired once...then ate a sawed off shotgun to the face, dead instantly.

I've already picked up a couple of things I need to edit, but they're minor.  Hope it's this fun when I play my buddies.

PS: Forgot to mention...the Business Tycoon and one cowboy (both wounded) managed to flee the premises.  The Lawmen let them go, and David Sloan neck was broke a few minutes later.

Elbows, the rules look very promising and I love your table. You can never have enough buildings. Where did you get the trees?

I will have the rules available eventually via PDF...and I have all of the cards which will be available via Gamecrafter...but as you know, buying single copies can be expensive.  Right now the assorted card decks and such are about $30.

I will have the card images available in the PDF, or via email etc.  May be a while though, as this was the first playtest.

While the game is not intentionally solo, the activation is done randomly by playing cards, and the creationg of your posse can be randomized.  Likewise, special cards are drawn from two separate decks, so this is also randomized.  The tactics of moving your models still come down to you.  So it is very suitable for solo play, but it's not fully automated.

I'll be adding more characters/weapons/rules etc. eventually, as I have no Indians etc. currently (but I have Indian weapons...I suppose I wasn't thinking).

The trees are normal Woodland Scenics, and I just stretch lichen over them...they fall apart sometimes due to handling, but "meh".  I'm too lazy to try gluing them.  The sad part is...this is about half of my buildings!  The others are Tri-City laser and are currently being painted.  I actually have too many "normal" buildings, so I'll be making a purchase of a train station, livery, church, some adobe cantinas etc. to really flush out the place.  I'll also be grabbing up some of the GF9 badlands rocks, to go with my desert hills, so I can do some stuff out in the middle of nowhere.

The full rules will have a campaign system available, but it will be very akin to something like LOTOW - involving towns/cities and shops.  Models taken out of action at the end of the game will have the ability to hire doctors of different skill for different costs, etc., recruit new members, and advance their profiles through career points.  It will be a bit simple, and not overly in depth.

Chapter Dos: The next Slaughter

So, having such a fun game last night, I decided to test the random-ness of the game...and ran the exact same scenario again this evening.  Same idea, same objectives, but again with randomly created sides.

The Lawmen this game (left to right)

1) Pinkerton with Sixgun
2) Soldier w/ Carbine
3) U.S. Marshal with Buffalo Gun (!)
4) Townsperson w/ pair of heavy sixguns
5) Gunslinger w/ sixgun
6) Townsperson w/ pair of sixguns

The Outlaws this game (left to right)

1) Bandit with sawed off shotgun.
2) Cowboy with sixgun
3) Hired gun w/ sixgun
4) Townsperson w/ pair of heavy sixguns
5) Tycoon w/ sixgun
6) Hired gun w/ pair of sixguns
7) Thug w/ heavy sixgun (David Sloan...for the hangin'!)

Picking random characters and weapons yielded some interesting combinations --- as luck would have it I still didn't draw a number of other "eccentric" characters.  There are around 45 character cards, including a lot of special characters.  Some character types are prevalent (cowboys and townspersons).  Others like the Drifter, Crazy, Priest, Sawbones etc. are much more scarce.  I was surprised I drew the Marshal and Tycoon again despite this.

Pics of the game...

The townsperson hustles Mr. Sloan toward the gallows...he put up less of a fight this time.

The alleyways between buildings became choked with gunfire...

A wounded townsperson tries to shoot the Tycoon in the back of the head...unfortunately the Tycoon kicked in the door and shot him dead immediately after...

The Marshal sat atop the roof of the Sheriff's office and gunned down numerous Outlaws with the slow but brutally lethal buffalo gun...

The gunslinger was given a sawed off shotgun by townsfolk...he dove through a window (injuring himself in the process) and fired into the Outlaws below, failing to kill anyone!

As the game drew to a close, the Lawmen hustled David Sloan toward the gallows...the Outlaws fell man by man...

The Outlaws were gunned down almost to a man...and slowly quit the effort.

Overall, the game played very differently, which was great.  It was absurdly brutal this time - constant gunfights at close range, almost every single model on the board was either injured or killed.  The best part, the entire game took about an hour or a little over.  It plays very quick...but yet maintains enough interest, and fun.  So far, looking good!

Rules probably won't work for me (too many figures in my wild west variation) but I love the name.  And nice terrain - but put some paint on those buildings (unless the town is too cheap to buy a paint brush!).

If painting it is daunting, paint it like Largo in High Plains Drifter!

The buildings in this town will have the roofs painted, but that's about it.  The other six buildings are being fully painted, so that the town will end up a mish-mash.  In all likelihood, many of these will be replaced by some new buildings in the future.  But for now, it'll stay as is (minus roofs).

I was screwing around with some other terrain pieces...including my piss-poorly painted Tri-City prototype buildings.  I'm not stoked about them, but it allows me to field a gigantor city if needed.

I messed around with some GF9 river pieces I have.  I may paint them up to match the board and do some monsoon-season scenarios.  Ignore the poor layout of the board.  I crammed almost every piece of terrain I have into this shot.

I played a game against my brother the other night, using the exact same scenario, added an additional Outlaw to the scenario.  I lucked out and drew a far better posse, and won for the Outlaws.  I also used the "Drifter" for the first time - the purpose built best character.  He was able to kill numerous guys before being subdued.

Update: The first edition of my cards arrived today from Gamecrafter.  Sadly I've already decided on some changes, but I needed to see the cards in the flesh so I can adjust the size of fonts etc.  As I mentioned earlier, the game is playable nearly solo.  The card drawing aspect is optional, but makes it very quick to start a game...draw some character cards and some weapon cards and deploy your models - done.

The weapon card deck has everything from knives to gatling guns (scenarios only!)

Each side (Outlaws and Lawmen) have a special card deck, with dirty tricks, and special tactics - these can be drawn between 1 and 4 times per turn - depending on player preferences.  4 times per turn would be a bit chaotic.  I've been using 1 per turn.

Character cards deck.  This includes Lawmen, Outlaws and Neutral characters.  Neutral characters can join either posse, whereas the Lawmen and Outlaws can only join their respective posses.

Each character has a poker card on the bottom - this is the activation card used for that character.  In the activation deck, each character will have two poke cards matching his card.

I've included blank weapon cards, special cards, and character cards - as well as dice, with stickers to form your own scatter dice.  The stickers can also be stuck to the character cards if you feel like making up your own special characters etc.  Overall I'm very pleased with the cards.  I'll be making numerous adjustments as playtesting continues, and eventually I'll have a completed, polished, and finished "game" set.

When everything is said and done, I'll eventually put it up on Gamecrafter, but realistically - it'll be more than anyone would want to pay.  Ordering one copy of just the cards, dice, and stickers is around $29.00.  I will however release a PDF sometime, and make it free ---- it'll have lists of items/characters, etc. so people can still play, just without the simplicity of having the decks of cards.

So, eventually...free rules PDF, and optional cards, but I can't really justify the cost to anyone.  I build my games for conventions and me and my buddies, so I absorb all the costs of buying the "expensive" decks  lol

As someone that likes to try new games, but living in Mexico means I have to translate all cards for my mates to play with, this is what I usually do:

I make a document (word or pdf) with the cards and backs, and print it B&W in color paper.

Then cut it and slide the front and back into a "card sleeve" to have my deck of cards.

If I want to change anything, its as simple as printing a new page, cut it and change the front part of the card.

Actually there are card sleeves with colored backs if you want to skip a step.

The result can be as good as you want, and for a favourite game, you can prin the pages in full color.

These decks has seen quite a good use, and when you don't play a game anymore, can take the old card out and change them for the new deck for the game in turn.

Hope that helps.

Anyhow, I'll wait to see your "free pdf" rules posted here someday.

Best wishes.

What I do for VC is I have a full set on my PC set to print on single page label.  I bought an educational supplies box of blank playing cards a few years ago with about 500 blank cards.

All I do is print them whenever someone adds a new gang or we add new characters, cut them out and stick to the cards.

Made a 1200 mile round-trip journey to hang out with a buddy of mine whom I haven't seen in six years or so.  He'd been cut off from proper gaming for quite a while too.  I sought to rectify that.  We knocked out four games of Shoot N' Skedaddle.  Excuse the small number, and poor quality of the photos!

We played four different scenarios...with two wins a piece.  As we drew characters, it was random who would be Outlaws or Lawmen.

Scenario 1: The Hangin' of David Sloan
This was on the same town/scenario I've now played 4-5 times (I wanted to repeat the same game to see how random it was, or what I really needed fixin').  My buddy drew Lawmen, so I played the Outlaws - bent on saving poor David Sloan from a hangin'.  It...didn't work.  My Outlaws were gunned down quite badly, and my buddy was clever about the route he took when dragging the prisoner.  He also decided to knock the prisoner unconscious (the prisoner resists movement randomly each turn - the Lawmen have the option of knocking him unconscious).  This scenario ended with my last model, a wounded doctor (of all people) taking a hostage.  He then decided to flee and tried jumping through a second story window onto a produce stand below.  He died in the process.
Victory: Lawmen

Scenario 2: The Drake's Branch Bank Robbery
I drew Outlaws again, and this time I had to get my two bank robbers off the board, as my other Outlaws came into town on horseback to aid me.  I lucked out and shot up several of Danny's Lawmen before he could react.  A horrible stalemate fight existed in the middle of town, which saw four or five models just tirelessly shooting and attacking each other, with little result.  In the end though, too many Lawmen were shot dead and my Outlaws escaped with their loot.
Victory: Outlaws

Scenario 3: Prison Break
I drew Outlaws again (seeing a trend here?).  In this scenario, Outlaws entered from three sides of the board, against only three lawmen.  The lawmen however could run to the local buildings, and shout for help (passing a Guts test would yield a character card for the Lawmen).  While half of my Outlaws made it to the jail - a set of sturdy Pinkertons and a recruited bounty hunter shot down my outlaws left and right.  The firefight ended up around the jail, but poor luck and poor timing meant it was not to be.
Victory: Lawmen

Scenario 4: The Strong Box
The last Old West scenario (we played two Pirate scenaiors, and some Victory at Sea as well!) was centered around a full gang of Outlaws in a centralized Hotel.  They had to steal a very heavy strongbox and get it off one of the main road points.  The Lawmen were scattered around the town.  While it initially looked like the Outlaws would have a fair go at it - Lawmen had been placed randomly, leaving one board edge defended by a single US Marshal...luck intervened.  I drew a Lawmen card (yep, I was lawmen for once!) which allowed me to make a board edge off limits to the Outlaws, hah!  This meant the Outlaws had to exit the board edge heavily covered.  It became a slaughter...with Lawmen perched on roof tops and the Outlaws slowly dragging the strongbox through a withering hail of gunfire.

The Outlaws had tried to grab a cart, but the US Marshal shot dead that attempt.  A determined Thug in the Outlaws gang was dragging the crate himself when he finally succumbed to gunfire.  It was very close at the end, but the luck was not with the Outlaws.
Victory: Lawmen

Overall, it was a blast.  We established rules for mounted models, etc.  It worked out very well and each game had fantastic flavor, a lot of eb and flow, and lots of screaming, shouting, and cursing... lol  As Danny will attest, in this game there is NEVER a sure thing.  That's what makes it so damn amusing to play!

Elbows,

Where did you get the artwork for the weapons cards? I have been trying to come up with something similar for my Desperadoes game, but I can't seem to find any decent pictures. Yours are exactly what I have been looking for!!! Could you possibly direct me to the location of those? Or tell me how much you would charge for a copy of yours? Either way I would be immensely greatful.

      Thanks!

Jim,

All of my stuff is just put together in MS paint using images from Google.  I just pick decent images with all white backgrounds (since I have zero photo editing software).  The fonts are downloaded for free from www.dafont.com ---they have an entire Old West section.

The other marshal badges and blood splatters are again just from google.  Slap em together in paint, using the guide sizes from Gamecrafter, and load them to the site.

If you want I can toss a bunch of images into a folder and email it to ya.  No big deal.

Last minute decision, I will be attending Siege of Augusta in Augusta, GA.

So if anyone happens to be going, look me up.  I didn't get to register to host, so I will be gaming Friday/Saturday as tables allow.  I'll be trying to host 3-4 games if time/space allows.

Convention Report:

I attended Siege of Augusta this Friday/Saturday and had a blast.  Conventions are tough for me since I work night shift Sun-Wed and then try to manage to be awake and alert for the weekend.  I arrived late Friday evening, and ran two games with a group of guys who I'd actually gamed with previously up at the Triangle Simulation Society conventions.  They run some insanely cool 1200's Moors/Christians skirmish games (they ran one Saturday afternoon at Siege).

I only got it one game Saturday afternoon because I only managed 4 hours of sleep and had a drive ahead of me.

Friday night we played "The Unfortunate Hangin' of Mr. David P. Sloan" two times - with players switching sides.  Again, due to the random characters/weapons...while we played the same scenario, each game was incredibly different.

As usual, I forgot to take pictures.  I only have a handful from the second game.  I did have a lot of people taking pictures of the game on Saturday (and one guy was blogging about it while he played, I'll see if I can track that down...).

First Game, Friday

The Outlaws drew excellent characters and weapons...the Lawmen (myself and a player)...not so much.  We had a couple Lawmen and a handful of cowboys and townspeople.  Not what you want facing the "Drifter" and Bounty Hunters, etc.  That, however, is intentionally built into the game.  There is every chance you could end up with a posse full of non-combatants.  This was the first time the Outlaws beat the Lawmen to a pulp in this scenario.

In this scenario, the Lawmen have to drag Mr. David P. Sloan to the gallows and hang him from the neck.  The Outlaws have to stop it.  This was completely turned on its head when the Outlaws drew a special card (each character activates twice per turn, and each side has two "special" cards per turn)...allowing them to make a character on the Lawmen's side betray them!  Needless to say they chose the Townsperson escorting the prisoner!  A couple of coins dropped in his pocket, the Townsperson changed allegiance immediately!  The nearby Lawmen opened fire on them, as a Bounty Hunter and Pinkerton tried to hold out against the encroaching Outlaws.  Slowly but surely, the Outlaws (having stolen horses nearby) were galloping full speed into town, shooting everyone.  The Pinkerton was hit with a shotgun slug and killed instantly.

The Bounty Hunter on the Lawmen's side put up a valiant fight but succumbed to massed gunfire.  The Outlaw "Drifter" sat back in the shadows, gunning down enemies with his lever action.  The lawmen in the center of town soon found themselves surrounded.  They managed to convince a local townsperson to join the fight.  Sadly by this point, they were being gunned down mercilessly.  They had gunned down the traitor and Mr. Sloan.  The wounded Sheriff was then about to confront the "Drifter" when he was shot in the back...and dropped dead.  When the smoke cleared, Mr. Sloan was dead...but the Lawmen had all been gunned down.

Second Game, Friday

Players switched sides, and another played joined - taking my place.  Both sides drew good cards, with the Lawmen drawing numerous rifles and carbines - giving them a distinct range advantage.

Within the first few cards, two of the Outlaws were gunned down immediately by rifle fire.  (In pity, I gave the new player two more characters for the next turn...from another board edge!)  The Outlaw players (having learned from their opponents) ran for the corral and stole horses immediately.  Immediately following the death of their two comrades, the Outlaws sabotaged the Lawmen, detonating a stick of dynamite hidden in a barrel nearby.  This killed a Pinkerton outright and wounded the Sheriff.  Two gunfights erupted - one by the gallows, and one by center of town.

Near the gallows, lawmen start gunning down Outlaws in proper order.  A Bounty Hunter never makes it into the fight as he gunned down while clambering over a fence.  A prospector (having stole a horse) rides up, throwing a stick of dynamite, blowing up the gallows and injuring a lawman.  A Cowboy joins the fray for the Outlaws while a Thief runs through the gunfight undetected (he is in disguise).

Across town, the "Crazy" working the Lawmen struggled to get his head together (failing NUMEROUS activations...for which he has an 80% chance of success!).  By the end of the game, he finally gets his sh_t together and runs into, calling out the last Bandit - engaging in a showdown.  He guns him down instantly.

Meanwhile, while the gunfight near the gallows is in full swing, the Thief sneaks up behind the Lawman escorting Mr. Sloan...and fires a sawed off shotgun into his back at point-blank-range, killing him instantly.  He prepares to uncuff Mr. Sloan (and give him his weapons!).  However, lawmen nearby immediately start opening fire.  Mr. Sloan decides to do the only thing a hand-cuffed man can do: run.  He runs and hides in a corner behind a fence.  Unfortunately the law finds him...and they bring bullets.

Sloan is gunned down, cowering in a corner, like the rat he is.  A brutal showdown between a cowboy and lawman (in which the Cowboy desperately unloaded his shotgun and two derringers before being shot in the head!) continued to reduce the Outlaws.  The last remaining two Outlaws made a run for it.  One guy on horseback managed to escape...running off the board of his posse's earlier demise.

The game ended with the wounded Sheriff (yep, he was wounded first turn...and slinked around the ENTIRE game, wounded...a rather serious disadvantage) engaging the Thief in a showdown.  The Thief never had a chance, and dropped dead the second his sawed-off failed to finish the Sheriff.

Third Game, Saturday

Being in the middle of a busy convention, this was less easy for me to catalogue.  It was a different table set-up and the scenario involved a group of Outlaws trying to escort a lockbox out of town.  The lawmen were scattered around the town.

Highlights:
-A Bounty Hunter failed numerous turns to get the guts up to actually shoot at the Outlaw Priest...he just couldn't do it - and in turn was gunned down by the Priest.  Moments later, a Pinkerton, having no such issue...shot the Priest dead instantly with his sixgun.

-A Lawmen cowboy took...perhaps 20-30 shots, each narrowly missing or avoiding to wound...and in a bloodbath like this game, that never happens!  He must have been walking on water.

-The Outlaws never got the lockbox anywhere.  They threw it out of the upstairs window (to save time, dragging it down the stairs!)...and never picked it up.  They had made a run for a couple of horses though...(the box was extremely slow to move in person, so they were allowed to grab horses or wagons if they desired).

-The Sheriff met his end in the middle of a street, victim of a Cowboy's shotgun to his face.

-The Outlaw's Thug was hit numerous times, and managed to keep moving (he ignores the first wound...suffered one...then had his wound removed with a special card...then was wounded...then was killed!).  This prompted the Lawmen to ask if they could shoot him in the back of the head while he was down on the ground...as they knew there is a single special card allowing the Outlaws to bring back a dead model.  I allowed this.  They weren't taking chances!

-The previously impervious Cowboy (Mr. Walks on Water) dove over a fence, shooting at the Thief.  He missed, and then managed to demand the Thief face him in a showdown.  The cowboy was wounded in the first exchange, so both models were wounded...engaging in 5-6 turns on shooting.  When the smoke cleared, the Thief was dead.  This reminded me of Open Range, when the two men (both wounded) have a shootout at about three feet, on the floor of the Sheriff's office...

By the end of this game, the Outlaws simply took too many casualties, and too many Lawmen were in good positions with rifles.  It was a valiant effort, but ended poorly for the Outlaw players.

Overall the games went well, and I found a few small rules I need adjust, adapt (or create!).  Everyone seemed to have a good time.

Wonderful table set-up and AAR.

I know your pain with the work hobby split challenge.  I also work Sun-Wed night shift.  I assume you're 12 hour shifts as well?  48 hours before the weekend is a pain but it looks like you find time for completing projects.  Unlike me.

Actually at the moment, I'm technically "part time" as I work 9 hours four days a week...so I'm not as bad off as you.  Also, being "part time" means I can get time off easily if needed...but the job is not gainful.  It just sucks getting tired or headaches in the middle of the day if I keep switching back and forth.

My motivation comes in waves of: zero...or 150%.  So on a given weekend, I'll do a ton of work, or none.  I get burned out quick (doing this Old West stuff while on hiatus from my Robotech game...and when I tire of this, I pen stuff for my Pirate game...) :D

As mentioned in my Macross thread, I've been fooling around with GIMP software (free Photoshop simulator).  It's been tough learning stuff myself, but it has been giving me more opportunity to put more polish on the cards.  Here is an update sample of the cards.

I've also redesigned a few characters, and created four groups now.

Outlaws
Lawmen
Indians
US Cavalry

The normal Old West games will be predominantly Outlaws/Lawmen.  The Indians and Cavalry have their own Character cards, weapon decks, and action decks.  Any one can be used against each other.  Likewise, you will be able to mix in individual models if you wish.  This will allow me to play Indian raids on railroads, Cavalry hunting down bandits etc.  It opens up the game a bit, since I have some buddies who have been jones-ing to get some indian models.

The cards are taking a bunch of time, but I wanted better/more interesting presentation if I put them for sale on gamecrafter.  So far, so good - just a lot of work.

Thanks D, I'm only concerned about how well Gamecrafter will print them out.  I'll probably print a very small test sample as opposed to ordering the full deck, at least at first.

The characters are about 80% complete (game includes roughly....35 types of characters), and then I'll start on revamping weapon cards, and action decks.

Update:

Weapon cards are under way (there are...25-30 different weapon cards)

I am also building a train platform, a water tower, a camp manager's shack, and some proper desert based tree's (desert bases, instead of the Pirate trees I was using earlier).  Lots of wood sawing, and gluing going on!  Hope to have a good bit more terrain, and then pick up a train.  I'm also going to work on a number of large campsite tent buildings, etc.

Well, I'll say this: I'm blown away.  I ordered a scant handful of test cards from Gamecrafter using the new images I put together (which involved numerous curse words, shouting, and hitting my desk as I tried to learn GIMP (cheap free photoshop) by myself... :?

End result is much better than I expected.  Now, as a disclaimer - I've already started editing the ones I have done (matching colours better, and verifying costs of characters, etc...so the final result will be slightly modified).  Sorry for the piss-poor photos.

New card vs old card...more vibrant, interesting, and most importantly - better organized and easier to read.

Lineup showing the five types of characters (Neutral, Cavalry, Outlaw, Lawmen, Indians)

The back of the standard deck.

The backs of the Indian and Cavalry decks (will be selling the Plains Wars stuff as a smaller cheap expansion, since I want to keep cost down on the original game)

New weapon card - will be re-doing some of these, as the "special" font and rules are too small.

Back of the weapon card...already changed the design, but it will be similar.

Overall, I'm shocked at how excellent the printing is from Gamecrafter.  Once I type up the rules booklet/pdf, I'll be able to put Shoot N' Skedaddle up for sale on Gamecrafter until I find another avenue of production (if I decide to pursue it).  So, a couple weeks and it'll likely be available.  Overall, very happy!

Title: Re: Bloody Aftermath...(Shoot N' Skedaddle) ***UPDATE: New cards!***
Post by: Elbows on February 12, 2013, 03:51:36 AM
As it stands now, I'll be planning on making the rules available for free...though to be honest, without the cards they're not quite useful.

I will sell all the assembled cards (characters, specials decks per faction, weapon deck etc.) as a lump set on Gamecrafter for whatever reasonable price I can manage.  I'm debating trying to get a small loan from family or friends (or my credit card!) to buy a bulk set, so I can reduce the cost.

So, you could download the rules for free, and check em out.  If you're interested you could buy the cards.  Unfortunately though the cards really ARE the game.  I'd likely also buy several copies and sell them at conventions etc.

The other option would be to assemble all of the card images in an additional PDF and sell the PDF for a very small sum (a couple bucks)...allowing players to print their own cards, etc.  Not really sure just yet how it'll all work out.

Update:

I'll be attending (and hopefully hosting!) Spring Fever up in Raleigh NC from March 8-10th (hosting hopefully on 8th and 9th at some point).

I've just ordered a batch of the Version 2 cards (with new characters, weapons, and modifications to character types etc.).  Hope it all works out well.  Need to knock out some terrain and a few spare models in the next few weeks before the con.

I'm also planning on trying to attend GnomeCon in Savannah, GA sometime in April.  No definite plans for that just yet.  So, if anyone is going to these cons, look me up.  Heck, bring some cowboy minis if you want - I'll let you use them!

 lol

Some Perry cavalry I had hacked up into cowboys real quick for a game a while back - decided to put some paint on them.  Not the best conversions (I don't even know how to use green stuff!) but as mounted stand in's they'll work.  Will be finished by tonight.

Renedra "plank fencing".  Like the other Renedra fencing, not my favorite stuff - but very cheap $4 per batch of eight sections - so $4 for the amount used on the corral (two sprues-worth).

Avilable from Architects of War stateside, or Renedra themselves abroad.

Also tossed together some prototype dice from Gamecrafter.  The indented dice with custom stickers - created a scatter dice, and two random test dice.  This is for randomly determining the difficulty of a test, OR using the dice to mark an adjusted attribute - it can be placed over the attribute on a character's card.  The Gamecrafter version will ship with six dice, and stickers to match --- also a large amount of additional stickers which can be used on the provided blank character cards (allowing players to create their own characters for scenarios, or fun).

Spring Fever - Raleigh, NC

Well, I'm ashamed to say that once again I failed to take nearly enough photographs.  I saw a lot of folks taking pictures, so if I stumble across some, I'll post them up.

Friday
Friday I arrived early, and it was pretty slim pickins for most of the afternoon.  I only ended up running one game when everyone started arriving in the evening.  I ran the same scenario I've been running (Lawmen attempting to hang a criminal while his gang seeks to free him).

A view of the town...

Main street...pre-carnage.

The Outlaws had a hell of a time this game.  It was the most lopsided game I've seen yet (one of the perks of the SnS system!).  Right at the outset, one of their best models, the Trailboss has a stroke of conscience and quit the gang...not before shooting one of his companions in the head and riding off.  The remaining Outlaws were gunned down, while the town continued to hamper them.  One wounded Outlaw was handcuffed by some angry citizens, etc.  The only chance the Outlaws had was a disguised Thief.  He managed to get to the soon-to-be-hanged fellow...but revealed himself when he shot at one of the Lawmen.  He died in a hail of gunfire.

The Outlaws called it quits as every single dice roll, and card drawn turned against them.

The Thief reveals himself, and bites off more than he can chew.

Saturday
Saturday I ran an alternate game - a four-way fight.  One small band of Lawmen had to escort a "wanted" man out of town, while three other gangs sought to abduct him.  The game went well, and while it started slow (the Lawmen were lucky enough to hear a distant train, and began retreating toward the train platform, everyone else giving chase).  Toward the end, everything came to a head, with massed casualties.

This time a Thief stole a horse and went running through town as fast as possible, hoping to surprise the fleeing Lawmen

Enemies were appearing out of every corner, bush, and saloon

The lawmen make a fighting withdrawal

At the end of the game, all four gangs/posses engaged in a up-close brutal gunfight, resulting in the death of the sought man.

There was a rather large amount of mayhem toward the end of the game.  Overall, pretty fun.  It was the first four-way game I'd played, so it gave me a lot of feedback of how to adjust to it etc.  There were no major issues though, which is a plus.  Had to create a few rules on the fly.

I had planned to run 2-3 games each night, but the small crowd, and my own exhaustion meant I only ran the two.

Update: I have been in touch with Chessex dice, and if I decide to produce the game, they've given me a cost - allowing me to provide 20 dice (5 of each one that you need) per game.  So, if I can produce a large number of games, I will be providing dice in the finished product...hopefully.  Time to consider a small kickstarter.

PS: I have also been in touch with the Bicycle Card company, and have been given bulk prices on their 1890's vintage card sets...meaning the "full" game will also feature two poker card decks.

PSS: I'm talking to my buddy Lee about providing acrylic tokens as well (though if this proves too costly I'll look for some other way).

Sounds like you have things well in hand if you decide to do physical production. I would still be in for a PDF version, just provide a template to make stickers to go on the dice with the PDF and we can all go out and scrounge blank dice to put them on (and yes Chessex makes blank dice too!).

The dice you'd need are available straight through Chessex - nothing fancy.  The special dice are just an option.  For normal gameplay you use simple D6, D8, D12, and D20's.

The dice I made with the stickers etc. are for creating random test rolls, or marking modified attributes on your character cards.

As it stands now, it should end up being thus:

1) Free PDF of the rules (though without the cards, it's not overly useful...but you will be able to peruse the rules before buying anything)

2) Simple set, just the needed cards, and rules.  You would thus be providing your own dice, poker decks, etc.

3) The full set, cards, rules, tokens, dice, poker decks, and a few added bits.

To be honest, with all of the Old West games coming out, I may not bother - but it never hurts to look at my options.  Even if I produce a large run to drive down costs, this would end up being a not-for-profit game.

At this point, I'm very much considering leaving it all in the hands of a small kickstarter.  I'm meeting up with my mother (super financial guru/cpa/accountant etc.) to really put all of the numbers together to make sure I'm not missing anything.  See what she thinks from a financial perspective.

Worst case scenario - it'll be available somehow...so don't fret.  I just really think if I do it right and get enough ordered I can provide an entire game with all of the tokens, cards, dice etc. needed for a very reasonable price.  The quantity discounts from my suppliers are upwards of 50%, so I will be selling the extra components in the game at far below what the average gamer would be able to find.

It'll be a lot of work for no real profit, but it'd be nice to share it with the gaming community.

What do you guys think would be more popular?  Just the necessary rules and cards...or a fully fleshed out offering, including vintage poker decks, tokens, dice etc.?

Think around $25-ish for the cards and rules...and around $40 for the cards, rules, 35 acrylic tokens, two decks of 1895 cards, and 20 chessex dice colour matched to the game cards.

Tough question. I'm usually more than willing to get a set of rules that tells me what else I would need especially if its stuff I'll probably have laying around already. However, Wild West games are really about the atmosphere so I would likely throw in for a full set of rules and accessories.

Yep, that's actually why I'm torn about putting it all together.  The full set would be giving buyers the stuff they need at significant cost...BUT...the stuff required is pretty easy to buy, and plenty of people will have stuff which would work.

This is the 1895 Expert Back Deck from Bicycle which would be included (two decks actually)

^A similar set of tokens would be included (number to be determined, but five designs, around 35 or so tokens)

^20 Chessex dice which are colour matched to the cards in the game.

Prices would include shipping to the U.S., and I guess an additional charge for customers abroad.

^And of course the primary decks (40+ Characters, 60+ Weapon cards, and each special deck consisting of 30+ special action cards)

A small quick-rule book, and the PDF download for the full rules (including minor campaign rules, and likely a few scenarios).

The only remaining question would be blank cards.  I may make this a small separate Gamecrafter purchase, but I can provide blank character cards, weapon cards, and special action cards...along with dice and stickers (which can actually be used on the blank character cards etc.)

What about doing it this way. Option 1 being the rules and the cards at price A (approx $25). Option B being the rules and the cards plus accessories at price B (approx $40) and Option C being just the accessories (say $20). That way there is added incentive to take Option B and go for the whole thing right off the bat.

You might consider adding cardboard tokens that have to be cut out with Option A as well.

That's my two cents worth at this point. I'm still in search of rules so I'm likely to be investing in and trying out several rule sets to be used with Calamity and your's intrigues me a lot. I see myself definitely attracted to Old West games that involved card decks, it just has the poker hand feel to it, much like the original Deadlands.

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning toward.  Having two options.

The biggest draw to my game (in my own horribly biased opinion) is the ability to play Solo, and the ability to create a game out of nothing in moments.  Random characters mean it's quite simple to simple set up a table, agree on a number of figures...draw them and start playing.  No need to build or create gangs, use army lists etc.  I've always been a huge fan of card-driven mechanics, and random chance.

You should see the gamers at the conventions eagerly reading each character/weapon they draw.  Even once the game is started, the special deck can often throw the game completely on its ear.  Include poker-card-driven activation and you can see how players are really along for the ride...and must make the most of it!

I think this system makes it rather unique, and quite a laugh.

Sounds like the plans are more or less in place, at least in your head, and your ducks are in a row. The question now is when do we get to shoot the ducks!

Working on that.   lol  (actually working on assembling the rules PDF which is a slow goin' process...)  Unfortunately I can run the game because it's all in my head, and seems bloody simple till I start typing it up...

I understand that dilemma Elbows - showing someone how to play a game and writing the rules are two very different things.

Really like how SnS looks and sounds - very interesting concepts.

Been there as well. Used to playtest rail games for Mayfair, deciphering the rule as written and what the actual intent was can be interesting to say the least!

^The finished small corral.

UPDATE: Also started to paint the Flying Tricycle Sheriff's office...it looks much better spray'ed.  I think I may start a slow campaign of eventually replacing all of my Old West buildings (actually taking time to paint/assemble properly...).  This will definitely happen if Dead Man's Hand is using 4Ground for pre-painted buildings...as I love that company.  I'm just really not enjoying the painted buildings I've done.  Poor colours, poor paintwork, and the buildings were pre-glued prototypes etc.

I'm guessing that 4Ground is the company that Great Escape is working with as well. They really are the only major laser cut building manufacturer that hasn't entered the Old West field. I have a some of their 15mm buildings for my Flames of War games and they are definitely my favorites. I need to try and save some room in Calamity for those buildings.

Need to put a corral on my to-do-list.

Well here's the thing...I can recover maybe 50% of my cost by selling off what I have.

I really want to buy a bunch of interior bits and actually spray/paint interiors before assembling etc.  I don't think I have the skill/patience to do wallpaper though! :D  Also, when I bought my Sarissa buildings - they were it.  They had three sizes, and different fascias.  I really want more variety in my buildings.  It'll be a very slow process - just buy and build a couple at a time, and eventually cycle them out.

I decided to playtest and record a game real quick so you can guys can get the flavor of the game a bit more.  Everything in the report is a result of the game rules.  This'll be in two parts as I had to take a break in the middle.  This also shows how suitable the game is for Solitaire.  I had set this up to play with my brother but he didn't make it over...so I played myself and had a good time.  :D

_______________________________________________________
A Couple of Horse Thieves

I decided to play a small scenario of Shoot N' Skedaddle which I'd showcase on here and my blog.  I was using a pre-determined town.  I would choose six models for each side.  The Outlaws would enter at three separate road entrances to the board.  Their goal would be to obtain three horses from the board and exit off a distant board edge.  I placed three horses on the board.  The six lawmen would be deployed randomly between six buildings.  Any Lawmen cards (specific to the Lawmen posse) drawn would start in the Sheriff's office.

I drew my Lawmen posse first:

1) Townsperson with Sawed off shotgun (a great combination, as the sawed off helps marksmanship...something the average Townsperson does not excel in!)
2) Hired Gun with a Buffalo Gun (the most devastating rifle in the game!)
3) Deputy with a Sixgun
4) Soiled Dove with derringer and disguise.
5) The Drifter with a carbine and a pair of sixguns...this would likely be an absolute monster in the game.  The Drifter is the purpose-built best character card to draw.
6) Hired Gun with a knife, derringer and heavy sixgun.

This was a very random, exciting draw for the posse.  I then selected my Outlaw gang:

1) Gunslinger with a knife and sixgun.
2) Soiled dove with derringer and disguise...(potential for a cat fight!)
3) Townsperson with a carbine.
4) Gunslinger with a pair of sixguns (this could be deadly!)
5) Townsperson with a knife and repeating rifle.
6) Indian scout with a stick of dynamite and a carbine.

I assembled the activation deck and rolled to deploy my Lawmen posse.  I also placed two Outlaw models at each of the three road entrances I had chosen.  The Lawmen posse was reasonably well scattered around the board.  The Drifter was placed in a perfect Hotel with lines of sight around the entire board.

I checked everything and began the game.  The outlaws began running into town.  The Drifter fired off a shot from his carbine, and surprisingly missed the Indian Scout.  Nearby one of the townspeople in league with the lawmen grabbed his sawed off shotgun from the counter and bolted out the door to help.  A friendly soiled dove also ran into the street, spotting an Outlaw gunslinger.  She pushed up her corset and sat, waiting.  (The soiled dove has a disguise, meaning she cannot be attacked until she takes an action against her opponent...allowing her to set a trap and ambush unsuspecting models).

One of the Outlaw gunslingers walked over to the nearby horse and mounted it, ready to make his getaway.  I'd have to balance the desire to win the scenario, with keeping the Lawmen outgunned if possible.  The other Outlaw gunslinger spotted the mischievous looking Soiled Dove and chose to follow his buddy behind some buildings.  Discretion might be the better option here...a casual stroll down main street could end badly.

Across town a loyal townsperson fired his sawed off shotgun at an Outlaw Indian Scout.  Despite the large blast of pellets, only one struck home, wounding the Scout.  Around the town the Lawmen posse was pouring out of buildings in search of the troublemakers.  The Deputy knocked out one of his office windows and fired at the Indian Scout who was now hobbling with blood pouring from a wound.  The Outlaw's Soiled Dove put on her poker face and ran toward the Sheriff's office, hoping to plead for "help" from the Deputy.

The game began to get a bit more interesting...

The Outlaw gunslinger who had stolen a horse decided to simply run for the board edge.

Nearby, his associate, the Soiled Dove managed to recruit an accomplice (one of her customers perhaps...).  The Townsperson willingly joined the fight on the side of the Outlaws.  He drew his sixgun and walked up to the door of the Sheriff's office.  As luck would have it I drew the new Townsperson activation cards twice in a row.  He carefully slipped into the Sheriff's office...and unloaded his sixgun into the back of the Deputy, killing him instantly.  The Soiled Dove grinned, and blew the Townsperson a kiss.

The Indian Scout cupped a hand over his wound and looked for a place to hide.  As he stepped forward he dropped dead.  In a distant Hotel window, the Drifter grinned, chewed on his cigar and reloaded his carbine.  The Lawmen attempted to turn one of the Outlaw Townsperson with a special "Snitch" card but failed.  The Townsperson decided the greed and money of his current company was better.

A moment later the Drifter struck again, striking a Townsperson with his carbine...wounding him.  The Outlaws began to panic, seeing more and more Lawmen returning fire.  The remaining Outlaw Gunslinger on foot dove through a nearby window, preparing to assault the Drifter's Hotel room.  The Drifter fired again, missing the wounded Townsperson.  He spat his cigar out.

Nearby, one of the Lawmen's hired guns ran and mounted one of the free horses, preparing to give chase to any Outlaw who chose to flee.  As the fleeing Outlaw gunslinger galloped through a mining camp, a weary miner fired a shot at him, striking him in the back.  He gasped and fell over his horse, urging it on.  Back in town the Drifter spit as he fired two more times at the wounded Townsperson, missing.  (This is shocking, considering the Drifter has an 80% chance of striking when shooting...)

In town, the Lawmen's Hired Gun galloped full speed after the fleeing mounted Gunslinger.  The Lawmen's other Hired Gun settled into a window with his large buffalo gun, resting it on the ledge, and crouching into a firing position.  The Drifter, already down on his luck, started coughing as he realized the Hotel has been set ablaze by the Outlaws.  He choked, and suffered minor burns.  (this was an Outlaw special card which came in quite handy...it wounded the Drifter and he is forced to flee the building next activation!).

In one corner of the board two opposing Townspeople engaged in a lengthy gunfight.  Townsperson models are very poor shots (just laypeople picking up guns and giving it a go!).  The gunfight was going on the second turn (several activations) with no injuries, despite using sawed off shotguns and a repeating rifle!

The remaining Outlaw Gunslinger in town saw the Hotel ablaze, and knocked out the nearby window, drawing his sixguns and firing both into the Drifter's window.  He struck with all four shots...and then failed to wound with ALL OF THEM.  While he was doing this, the Lawmen's Soiled Dove walked into the room behind him...

In Shoot N' Skedaddle the goal result is always 5+...

Sometimes you just don't have the luck do ya? lol

The Gunslinger gritted his teeth and unloaded the rest of his pistols into the Drifter's window.  The Hotel was fully ablaze now, but the Gunslinger saw a bloodsoaked arm drop limply out of the window.  He grinned.  The Gunslinger almost shit his britches as two Derringer rounds shattered the rest of the window.  He dropped to the floor and spun around, spotting the Soiled Dove frantically reloading her derringer.

The Outlaws were moving in force toward the horse corral.  The Soiled Dove carefully snuck into the fence, preparing to steal the horse.  Two Outlaw Townspeople joined her, firing wildly at the Lawmen's Hired Gun who was riding by.  Other Outlaws were heading their direction to help.  The Lawmen's Soiled Dove ran out the door before the Outlaws could shoot at her.

In the middle of all of this, the Lawmen's Hired Gun stopped his horse, dismounted and called one of the Outlaw's Townspeople out.  The Townsperson hopped the fence, and the two engaged in a showdown (a brutal simultaneous gunfight which doesn't stop till someone drops!).  The Hired Gun drew and both started shooting.  It was over in seconds.  The Townsperson dropped, two large Colt-sponsored holes through his chest.  The Hired Gun spat his chewing tobacco out and reloaded.  He dropped on his butt as an errant bullet from the surrounding gunfight struck his leg.

He staggered up and fired at the nearby Soiled Dove as she stole a horse and made a run for it.  He heard her scream as he fired...

PART TWO: THE PLOT THICKENS (OR GOES ABSOLUTELY ASTRAY!)

(Note: Nice thing about the game is that you can "pause" it very easily...just return to the game, draw the next card and keep playing, no real need to keep track of anything.  Tokens keep track of any special conditions on models.)

The first card I drew when returning to the game allowed the Soiled Dove to flee the board with a second horse.  The Lawmen were hurting and the Outlaws only needed one more horse to steal a perfect victory (though they'd already essentially won the scenario!).

The valiant Hired Gun, grabbing at his gut wound watched as the Soiled Dove galloped off into the dust.  He slumped against the fence and started stumbling back toward his horse.  On the other side of the corral a Townsperson was looking for him.  The Hired Gun hid as he crawled along the fence.  Down the street the remaining Outlaw gunslinger grabbed a hostage.  The other Lawmen Hired Gun grimaced as he looked out the window and saw the gunslinger hulk away, behind his meat shield.

The Hired Gun with the buffalo gun ran and angrily kicked out a window, standing on the porch roof, waiting for a shot.  Sadly, as he did this, the other Hired Gun working for the Lawmen decided it was better to switch sides.  He was swung to the Outlaw side of the game.  This would likely prove the final blow for the Lawmen (who's posse now consisted of a hiding Soiled Dove, a hapless Townsperson and one remaining Hired Gun...)

Then the impossible happened.  As the Hotel blaze continued, smoke and flames licking from the windows...the door to the back staircase burst open.  Bloody, jacket blackened by flame, the Drifter stepped onto the porch clutching his carbine...(the Lawmen had drawn their special card allowing them to revive - albeit wounded - their last casualty!)

The Drifter wasn't finished just yet.  He stumbled down the stairs, and fired his carbine at the Gunslinger in the street...narrowly missing the hostage.  He set his carbine down and drew his sixgun, firing, striking the Gunslinger.  The Gunslinger lost his nerve (and via a special card...) decided to flee the game.  A nearby Townsperson huddled next to the Drifter, reloading his shotgun.

Bullets impacted all around them as the remaining Outlaws fired in vain.  The tide had suddenly turned back AGAINST the Outlaws!  In the main street the Lawmen's remaining Hired Gun leapt from the porch and took cover near a building, his buffalo gun waiting for vengeance.

The wounded Outlaw Hired Gun (having recently turned on his Lawmen buddies!) struggled up onto the remaining horse, preparing to make a getaway.  As he did, the burned, bleeding Drifter walked slowly in the street, dropping his carbine at his feet.  The Hired Gun looked over his shoulder just in time to see the Drifter draw both of his sixguns, slinging lead violently.  The Hired Gun fell dead from the horse...and the horse took a round in the flank, bleeding.

There were two remaining Townspeople working for the Outlaws.  One was in a shootout, while the other snuck for the final wounded horse.  With the horse wounded it would be limping, meaning there would be no quick getaway, but a full victory was still possible!  This was further enforced when a simple Townsperson managed to shoot and kill the Drifter...finally putting him to rest properly.

At this point in the game...

1) The Outlaws have two Townspeople...one is on the last remaining horse, and trying to get out of town.
2) The Lawmen have a Hired Gun, a Townsperson (wounded), and a Soiled Dove frantically running after the fight!

I drew an Outlaw special card which allows them to betray one of their own...in exchange for some bonus activations.  The fleeing mounted Townsperson turned on his buddy (leaving him in the clutches of the Law!) and used a bonus activation to flee.  I shuffled the activation deck.  The Lawmen had ONE chance...draw the Hired Gun first and shoot the fleeing Outlaw.  I drew the Outlaw card first and he galloped off the table!

OPINIONS:
Well, this was easily the most "ridiculous" game of Shoot N' Skedaddle I've played.  I was literally laughing to myself as I drew some of the special cards that caused the game to go back and forth so quickly!  I had never used Soiled Doves before, and found them quite interesting.  Horrible at gunfighting, but they allow a lot of unique strategies.
Before finishing the second half of the game, I had all but written off the Lawmen.  Then the Drifter came back and started gunning down people.  This was a perfect example of the goal of Shoot N' Skedaddle: it's impossible to call the outcome.  I hate games where you can mathematically determine the outcome (ie. "Well, I know for a fact I can only go this far...and I won't move until they do, etc...").
I had a good time!  That's all that matters.  The game was an absolute riot.

How long did this game took you?

It took perhaps...4-5 turns (each turn = all activation cards drawn).  If it wasn't for the typing up and taking picture, it would have been a 1.5 hour game.  Maybe less.  It of course, also depends on the violence of the game, and special cards (some cards add models, some remove them...some revive them, etc.).  This one had more sneaking - due to the objectives.  A small 5 v. 5 gunfight could easily be resolved in 30-40 minutes, etc.

My convention games run perhaps 2 hours...with 8 models per side (normally four players).  This is due to the rules explanations, convention chat, chatting with passers-by etc.  When playing with people who knows the system, it's much quicker.

Been working on the rules...will definitely take a few revisions, but here's a sample page

+I'm finalizing some additional special cards.
+Adding the Shoot N' Skedaddle name to card backs, since it's not on anything!
+In addition to the full rules PDF, the cards will ship with a smaller quick reference guide so you don't have to print out stuff - read the rules once or twice, and use the quick reference booklet while gaming.  This should be full colour, 12-16 pages or so.
+Attending GnomeCon in Savannah, GA for some final play-testing.  To be fair, playtesting has been great so far, so there "should" be no major changes.
+Once rules are done (could be a little while) I'll do the final math and see how to try the kickstarter.

Have also figured out that while I don't have stuff to do stretch goals...if the kickstarter makes enough, I can enlarge the order, dropping the price, and thus I can include an additional set of blanks etc.  This is hard to do solo while working, but rest-assured it will happen eventually!

I agree, I'm eager to see the final version and would certainly back a kickstarter for it.

I also just created a TurnStyle Games YouTube channel.  Once rules are close, I'll be posting videos of gameplay, examples of rules and such.  Pardon the horrible voice though!  lol

I'll try  lol  No cool miniatures or buildings for me though, so I don't know how excited you guys could get over some rule snapshots!  :D

I may try to knock out some introduction videos here shortly.

That's the thing, I like the looks of the preview page a lot, so more teasers like that are nice treat surely.

By the way, will the cards be sized so that they fit nicely into some card protector sleeves?
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle - Rules in progress --- also attending GnomeCon (Savannah GA)
Post by: Elbows on March 29, 2013, 08:05:58 PM
Yes, and no.  The basic weapon and special cards are normal Poker sized cards (so I assume they'll fit into sleeves nicely).  The character cards are Tarot size...so, I'm not sure.  I don't know how strict Tarot card sizing is, and if anyone makes protective sleeves for them.  The cards are nice and robust (not as robust as proper poker cards though).  They shuffle well, but aren't as flexible.

Overall the quality is great, but cards are only ever indestructible...as...cards.  :D

Well, looks like they exist from a couple companies.

http://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Flight-Supply-Tarot-Sleeves/dp/1616614439

The Gamecrafter based Tarot cards are: 2.75" x 4.75" or...(tappety tappety tap) 70x120 mm --- actually matches the linked ones perfectly.

SOOOOO...yes.  Yes you can.  lol

Maybe before you launch your kickstarter you could contact some companies that make mdf buildings and get them at a discounted rate for stretch goals

That would be cool if you could pull it off, however, I think keeping the KS simple is a good thing too.
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle - Rules in progress --- also attending GnomeCon (Savannah GA)
Post by: Elbows on March 30, 2013, 07:26:47 AM
Yes, I had considered contacting either a building company or some miniatures companies - but the reality is that the kickstarter would be very small...and a one-time production of perhaps 300 units or so.  I did contact Knuckleduster (since he sells my buddy's TCL buildings) but did not get much interest.  Lee from TCL will be doing the tokens etc.

This will be a very simple kickstarter.  That being said, if it ends up being funded or goes well there may be more stuff in the future (or simply kickstarting another run of the games etc.).  Right now that's all getting ahead of myself as I don't know if I can find 300 interested customers!  lol  I'll actually be investing several thousand dollars myself, so I'll end up with a couple dozen copies myself which I'll sell directly at conventions etc.

Post by: Heisler on March 31, 2013, 12:04:38 AM
I don't think you will have any problem selling 300 units with a KS. The production values are high and the playtesting is virtually complete. I think the Kickstarters that bother me the most, and which I don't support, are those were they haven't even finished the development of the game or can't even show off concept art for miniatures. I'm only going to support something that looks like its pretty much ready to go to production. You have done the production research and the product is essentially ready to go to press. I certainly would jump on that!

Well, we shall see.  I'm not entire sure where to even advertise once the KS starts.  I'll have the YouTube videos (introducing game mechanics, and showing samples of play) and then...maybe a facebook page or something.  I'm working hard on the rules, but it's annoyingly tough to put a simple concept into freakin' words that someone would understand.  I think the YouTube videos will be a big aid...since I can explain the game in 5-10 minutes at a con, but it seems like a heck of a lot of typing to get the same message across to someone from zero.

Will keep you guys updated...probably a few weeks before it's all done and ready to go to the KS.

Advertising Kickstarters is inherently difficult. You pretty much have to depend on word of mouth. You hit the bigger forums with a posting and gently nudge your existing supporters to spread the word through their blogs and their own social media contacts. Just watch your overseas shipping costs, that seems to be the real killer right now especially those that got caught by the US increases after their Kickstarters had ended.

Cpt. Jake - I'll be running a game (or two) each evening, 3-6 on Friday and I think 6-10 on Saturday.  Just arranged it with Mike.  Hope to see you there.

Heisler, yeah at this point I'm not sure how I'll be handling international shipping as it's pretty darned expensive.  The difficult thing for me is that this is a non-profit project, so if I get my numbers wrong, I eat the difference.  Luckily it's a small amount of product which can be shipped in a small package...but yes, USPS is going up nearly weekly.  I think I can manage it, I am afraid that the additional cost of international shipping will scare off some buyers.

At the end of the day I'll give it a swing, and if it fails - the main components will still be available, just at a more expensive cost to the consumer.  Time to get back to work!

Sounds like a plan. I guess I would just take facsimiles of all the components so you at least have an idea of the weight of everything. Then you can get a reasonable idea of what the overseas shipping will be.

No fancy pictures unfortunately - but rules are zipping along quite well.  I'm doing the rules draft on Word so I can edit it more easily.  I kept having to change/delete or edit the pictures so I'm going to wait till the draft is finished - then transpose them onto the nicer images format.

Nine pages down and many more to go!  :)

Bump.

Need some input from potential buyers of the game (or just input in general from Old West fans).  The "full" version of my game (assuming a kickstarter succeeds) will feature two identical poker card decks.

What do you guys prefer?  I am looking at two options.  I have bulk pricing on these from Bicycle - Vintage Expert Back Decks from circa 1890's.

http://www.bicyclecards.com/products/playing-card/bicycle-expert-back-deck

They have a nice fake patina to them, and are more similar to normal modern playing cards.  The other option (awaiting bulk price) is from US Games Inc. for their 1864 Poker Deck.  These are a bit more proper looking, with square edges, and no stamped numerals, so you have to count up the suit icons yourself etc.  These are the ones I use and I really like them.  At the end it may come down to price, but what do you guys prefer?

http://www.usgamesinc.com/1864-Poker-Deck/

They have a nice hand-painted look to them, with a very light beige back.  Which ones do you guys fancy?

PS: Updates, I've found out how to trim some of the costs off the Gamecrafter system, and have figured out how to offer bonus unlocks if a kickstarter is succeeding (as money/sets go up, my cost goes down, and I'll throw in more characters, blank cards, etc.).

why not one deck of each. If that is not possible I like the bicycle ones the most but that is because I own a few decks myself and I think they have a great finish and a very good quality.

Za, for my game two identical decks are required.

The finish and quality of both decks is superb.  The 1864 decks look a bit more the part.  I'll snap photos of both side by side.

***BONUS ANNOUNCEMENT***
While jotting down the example scenarios I'll be providing in Shoot N' Skedaddle's rulebook I decided I will use some of our very own Lead Adventure forum town names...so you may find a scenario set in Obsession, or Calamity etc.  (only six scenarios though, so not everyone will be presented!)  lol

Either deck works for me.

At gnomecon, do you need any figs or terrain or anything?  If so I have a decent set of buildings (or figures) you can borrow if you want.   I'm not sure I can make the times you mentioned.   I am a 'geographic single Dad' and Friday evening will be really difficult, I have to pick up my daughter from the bus stop at 4pm and it would take me until about 5 to get there.  I may be able to make the early portion of the Saturday night, but no way I can stay through 10pm.

Having said that, I can drop off (or you could pick up) anything you need to borrow if it makes your travel/set up any easier.

Thanks for the offer but I'm well stocked.

Regarding the times -- I'm not sure if I have someone after me on Friday, if not I can hang around (or grab another empty table).

The times on Saturday are just the times I have the table space for.  I will probably run one or two games, and no one "needs" to stay till 10PM etc.  Just swing by and see what's going on.  Not a big deal.  Heck if the scenario is going too well or too badly we can toss you in with a couple of characters as reinforcements.

Some photos of the cards in "real life" settings.

So you can see both are nice cards (both have excellent finishes and printing).  The 1864 cards look more rustic (apparently these are the ones commonly used on movie sets for the era etc.).  The Bicycles have a nice dirty faux-patina though.

Both decks look very nice, but 1864 deck does have more the feel of the era to me as well. Are both decks normal "paper" cards or either/both with "plastic" finish thus making the cards less easy for wear and tear?
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle - GnomeCon - and vote for the cards you like!
Post by: Elbows on April 09, 2013, 09:17:22 PM
Both are heavy duty normal playing cards, not prone to tearing etc.  The Bicycle cards are much more "slick" out of the box.  Both would last you forever.

BUMP: I got in touch with the company who produces the 1864 deck.  The price is a tiny bit more, but is very doable.  I'm leaning toward this deck simply because the Bicycle deck really looks like "dirty" modern playing cards, as opposed to period pieces.  I'm leaning toward the 1864's.  Will grab some more feedback on my blog/facebook/TMP etc.

Minor update: weekend...time to crank out some more pages of the PDF.

Also, I have ordered a decently large amount of acrylic for tokens --- for my buddy to cut up so I can see how many tokens I get per sheet, and how much it'll all cost.  This means if the kickstarter doesn't meet its goal, I should have several sets of tokens available for anyone who picks a copy up off gamecrafter etc.  They'll also be good tokens for generic games too, so I may have some spare sets if this thing doesn't take off!  lol

Actually, I'll be starting it within 2-3 weeks as of now.  I was waiting to finish the rules, but then I realized that the kickstarter will probably be set for 2 months, so I can "finish" them in that time frame no problem.  My only issue right now is squaring away the amazon payment thing (linking it to my bank account) and squaring away the tax circumstances.  All of the "pieces" are done.  I'll need to do a quick intro-video etc...but it's pretty much good to go.  Just have to find time to hit up the website, do the final math (waiting on cost of tokens) and post it.

The college I work for lets out in three weeks - so that would be the latest (I'm unemployed over summer!).  I've also found a couple of ways to trim costs on the gamecrafter side of things.  I expect between $25-30 shipped for the basic set, and $45-ish for the full set with dice, etc.  I will have a couple options for buying a pair of sets to save you on shipping.

In addition, I figured out how to do "stretch" goals.  I'll be setting my kickstarter aiming for 200 sets.  For each additional hundred sets ordered, my price goes down - so I'll add more cards/characters/blanks to the game itself.  These will be minor things (a handful of extra characters etc.).  But by starting modest, if it does well enough you will get some extras as my price drops.

Just depends on when I get the time.  It's a bit frustrating having it all in my head...and yet it takes so long to put on paper!  It'd have been easier if I had just done a Microsoft Word file or something...but making the PDF images is time consuming, not to mention if I change my mind I can't edit...but have to essentially re-do the pages.  I've redone just about every page I've put together 2-3 times.

 lol

Currently sitting at 14 pages, with many more to go.  I'm getting into the meat and potatoes though, so - we'll see.

Capt,

I ran one game against a fella, and then a hectic game of 6 which started at about 11 o'clock tonight!  I guess I didn't get to run into ya.  I was hanging out at the next table over, at the Gnome Wars game for a while.

I also got a game in Friday but it was...less than fantastic (the players were teens who had no attention span, but luckily quit halfway through the game!)  lol

I tried...

My daughter and I got there at about 12:00 Saturday and intended to stay for just a couple hours so we could get home, take care of the new puppy, feed horses and other critters, and then head back down to Gnomecon for 18:00.  Instead, she started playing Gnome wars and was having such a great time we didn't leave until after 16:00.   BY the time we got home and cleaned up after the puppy and got all the critters fed it was way too late for me to head back there...

Mike Baker said your set up looked great and chuckled as he described your Friday night game.   I told him to tell you I was sorry I was gonna miss the Saturday evening game.  I REALLY wanted to see how the rules played and get some Wild West gaming in...   Seems life never goes as intended.    lol

Glad Saturday went better than Friday for you.

If you're going to be playing/running a game in the area again, let me know and I'll try hard to link up.

Hey no worries, Brian and his gal (Gnome Wars) are the folks I hang out with at cons normally.  They've played SnS numerous times --- I actually showed up at GnomeCon around 1800 on Saturday, ran a game --- then played some Gnome Wars (played a bit Friday too!) and then we played SnS again late that night.

No worries.  I'm stupid and didn't take any pictures (except one!).  I saw some people snapping photos, but I never find them online, so who knows.

The later game was run with 6 players (3 per side) doing a Horse Thief scenario...it was mayhem.  I'm afraid to admit that almost every horse was shot to death...I think the 18 characters was a bit much.  Perhaps with seasoned players it would work, but I really think 6-8 models per side is about as far as you'd want to push it.  We also ran four special cards per turn for Outlaws and Lawmen...which made it extra-hectic (on purpose).

For cons, I'll probably stick to four players.  It was utter mayhem, on a cluttered table.

Hey guys, I'm going to be slowing down a little bit on the pdf...I have a group of gamers who'd like to proof-read my stuff, so I'm going to do a quick n' dirty Microsoft Word file for proof-reading.

If anyone is interested in helping, just PM me your email address.  Once the rules are polished I'll convert them all to the prettier/neater PDF style.

Also, more good/bad news.  I've found I can get the Gamecrafter price down a good bit on the SnS decks, so I may not have to bother with a kickstarter (it would essentially be for cards/dice/token and some cost savings if I did).  So...I'd say 95% of my cards are complete, so this could be on sale via Gamecrafter pretty soon!  (here's hopin.)

Also fixed my computer (so far...) only took $240 worth of gubbins.  :-[

Great eye-candy on that table. Your photography splendid and the figures are well done. I'd be interested in these rules as a solo gamer.

Managed a game today with board-member Froggy.  A simple 6v6 Horse Thief scenario.  It started off a little slow...then went nuts.  I thought I had the game in the bag at the end of turn two...and then everything went sideways.

First outing for three of the new DMH buildings...(others under construction)

A Hired Gun sat in the Barber Shop most of the game, gunning wildly at anything that came in range.

A ridiculous gunfight and bloodbath erupts 13" from the table edge that the Outlaws need to exit with three horses...

One of the Townspersons on the Outlaws side...who struggled to run all game...then stole a horse...then rode like hell...then was gunned down and put out of action...who then came back....and then grabbed three horses and almost escaped with them!

Highlights:
-One of my Hired Guns fired...no less than 12 shots (six activations of shooting!) at one damn enemy...and despite a 50% chance per shot - MISSED all of them.
-Froggy was using the "Crazy" who has a 20% chance of not activating...he did this three times in a row!
-A wounded Cowboy demanded a Showdown with one of the fleeing Outlaw Soldiers.  Despite being wounded and a much worse shot...he managed to gun down the Soldier, effectively saving the game.
-A Pinkerton was blown to pieces by a stick of dynamite thrown by a Bounty Hunter who had injured himself by diving through a window onto a porch awning...
-The Bandit killed a Lawmen Indian Scout with a single shot of the Buffalo Gun, ending his game early.
-Using two Cowboys I spent a lot of time lasso-ing Outlaws...trying to keep them from moving off the board.

My MVP goes to "Gordo" the fat Mexican Townsperson who had an incredible game...he couldn't run to save his life...but boy could he ride a horse!

To elaborate a bit on Senor "Gordo".

Froggy drew a Townsperson armed with a shotgun.  I selected the overweight Mexican for this task.  While running on foot he managed to roll 1's and 2's on his D6 (meaning he was running...barely...).  Upon stealing a horse, and rolling a D8 while running...he started rolling 7's or 8's - hauling significant amounts of ass.  A Hired Gun shot him dead off his horse as he galloped by.  Shortly after, Froggy drew the only "revive" card in his special deck.  "Gordo" hopped back up, got on his horse than galloped over and grabbed the reigns of the other two horses (Outlaws need 3 horses to win the scenario).  He was literally 12" from the edge of the board (an easy gallop with all the horses in tow).

Luckily for me...he was shot dead again (by the same Hired Gun..who could have sworn he shot a similar looking fellow a few minutes ago!).  Townspeople normally suck.  They have no real fighting ability and are normally cannon fodder.  But not Senor "Gordo"...the surprise hero this game.  :D

Hey guys, I've got 10 pages of the PDF set in a private photobucket account.  PM me if you're interested.  Should have another 4-5 pages in the next few days.

Already getting some feedback.  PM me for account link and password.  It is not a full rule set yet, but you can start getting an idea for the process.

I'll ask for feedback to be provided via PM as well, just simply list questions or content corrections according to page number.  Thanks guys!

Update.

After getting feedback from numerous people, the rules have been temporarily placed in a Microsoft Word document which is easier to email and review (photobucket diminished the quality of the images).  I have also changed the wording of the rules...less charm...more concise.  I'll be emailing those who've asked to view them within the next day or two.  Finally making some progress into the meat of the rules.

I've also reviewed and edited all of the images for cards, and have modified the characters list (40 characters of 29 types).  Added several new characters, and a couple of weapon combinations.  I've edited the special decks as well.  Everything is becoming finalized.

Thanks for bearing with me guys, it's been much more work than I thought.  I'm shocked when I see my image folders with over 300 images I've been compiling... :?

I've also made a lot of progress on the simple, yet entertaining campaign rules.  It'll be entertaining between games I'm sure.  In addition I reviewed real-life prices from the Old West and have edited the cost of characters, equipment, etc.  Sorry, no teaser pics lately!

It's an impressive endeavour you're making here Elbows! I just won my first batch of Old West figures on Ebay and I've got a few buildings so I'll be looking at S&S with great intetest! Are you looking to get a European dustributor for hard copies, cards, etc.? The rules could be sold as a PDF but the cards sound great!

As it stands now, if I can reduce the price enough I'll skip the kickstarter and sell directly through www.thegamecrafter.com.

If they ship internationally, that'd be great.  If not, perhaps I can investigate shipping costs and arrange a way to ship internationally.  The rules will be free, but unfortunately they're a bit useless without the cards (all of the primary game mechanics are card driven).  I may email the Gamecrafter fellas and see what they say.

If anyone has had some time to read through the rules, please let me know - I've sent out a half dozen copies and haven't received any feedback (good or bad).  I've just done the horses and wagons rules and I'm currently working on the campaign stuff, along with an entire revamp of the cards.  I'd like to see if I can finish this up in a couple weeks (doesn't look like I'll be going kickstarter, but it'll be available anyway).

Feel free to PM/email or post in this thread.  I'm looking for content critiques and spelling/typos/syntax/confusion stuff.

I've heard good things about Game Crafters but have never used them myself, so I'd be interested to hear how that goes.

Okay guys, I'm churning through the final version of the cards - this may be up on Gamecrafter within the week.  Initially I'll just email guys proof-reading sets of the rules while I start the laborious process of creating the full rules PDF.  It'll be completely playable, and I'll probably solicit feedback etc.  I'll post up the price and link to Gamecrafter when it's up.

Initial release will be the primary card decks only.  No kickstarter, no cards/dice etc.  The Kickstarter would have been neat but likely unsuccessful and a whole lot of work with zero added profit etc.  I'll post a quick list of the things you'll need to play it.  Stay tuned!

I'm trying to squeeze in more work as I am taking some online college courses at an accelerated level which is sapping a lot of my time!  lol

For those curious, in addition to the four primary decks of SnS cards you would need the following to play a game:

-Miniatures and terrain (obviously...)
-Suggested on a 4'x4' or larger playing area (movement and shooting is far-reaching)
-2 matching decks of poker cards (I'll post links to my suggested decks if you're interested)
-5+ of each of these types of dice: D6, D8, D12 and D20
-A CD or DVD for use as a blast template
-Some tokens/chits/counters (these I will actually have available for sale, a limited run which my buddy is cutting for me...prices and availability later...but any home-made tokens would do)
-A couple of tape measures

So, nothing that most gamers don't have laying around.  Heck, playing cards can be bought for what.. $1 a deck at the local gas station? (or should I say "petrol services...")

Once its up on Gamecrafter I'd like someone to see how much it costs to ship abroad.  I'll keep you guys posted.

I have the proof-reading set about 90% done (more than enough for you to play the game).  Producing the actual PDF will be a bit time consuming, as it'll end up being 30+ pages and each one is an image I have to create.

So, once the cards are up, the game is ready to play - if you're willing to cope without "pretty" rules.  The rules will be a free PDF download (hopefully hosted at Gamecrafter along with the cards).

Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle - Cards Finished - Ready for Order (shortly!)
Post by: Elbows on June 18, 2013, 08:11:41 PM
Update: I just ordered a set of the final cards (Gamecrafter requires the author to order a complete item before putting it up for sale).

Good news: I'm happy with the final cards and product.  30 Characters and 21 different equipment/weapon cards.  I have "most" of the rules fleshed out in the draft and have contacted somebody on here about finalizing a process to put them in PDF (this will still take some time).

Bad news: Gamecrafter is pretty pricey on shipping...meaning I ended up paying $28 for a shipped copy to me, at cost.  The cards (just shy of 200 cards) will be available for $25, but the shipping is around $7 cheapest in the US.  I don't know how awful international shipping will be.  The only promise I can make is that you will eventually have a nice pretty PDF rulebook of 30+ pages in addition to the cards.

I'll post a link once I get my copy of the cards and give them a once over.  For those with various editions of the proof-read rules, shoot me a PM and I'll get you the most up to date list...in fact I'll just create an emailing list with all of you guys and keep you up to date.  While the game is complete, if a couple of you guys get to gaming and playing and figure out some issues, I can address them in the final PDF - failing that, a simple FAQ/errata page.

Gamecrafter produces these decks in single batch orders, so you get put in a small printing queue.  This can take a couple of days to a week to get yours printed.  So, here's hoping in a week I can give it all the go ahead.  Sorry the price didn't turn out better - that was even with me chopping a bunch of fat (figuring out how to maximize cards according to sheets).

I will also make available an add-on pack shortly which will include a large number of blank weapon/special/character cards, some stickers for use with them, and some dice which come with decals allowing you to modify traits mid-game.  In addition to this, a token pack will be available in very limited quantity from myself at a reasonable price, once my buddy with his laser shop gets them cut out.  The tokens will be a single run, and will be approximately 30+ tokens in five types/colours.

Just so I am clear, the rules themselves as a PDF are free?  The cards etc. cost money.  Will it possible to buy a hard copy of the rules rather than a PDF?
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle - Cards Finished - Ready for Order (shortly!)
Post by: Elbows on June 19, 2013, 12:14:10 AM
Yes, the only purchased material will be the card decks themselves (consisting of four separate decks).  The rules will be a free downloadable PDF.  There will be no hard copy of the rules.  I have zero funds and it's just me producing a game in my spare time.  This is why it's taken me 8 months just to get them all sorted.  Now, I can't say that in the future I may not seek to publish them somehow, but as it stands now: free downloadable rules and you just buy the decks of cards.

The rules may seem lengthy when you read through them, but once you play a game or two they come pretty simply.  It's not one of those things where you'll be plowing through the rules constantly.  I had the option of putting the PDFs into a booklet to sell with the game, but it added too much cost to the game.  The game will not even ship with a game box etc.  It's just the decks of cards shipped directly to you.  I've cut costs as much as possible to get the most bang for the buck.

The other required stuff to play a game is mentioned above, and that's all up to you guys.  Most of it is simple gaming stuff that most guys should have handy, or can be acquired very cheaply.

PS: Until the PDF is finished, players can contact me directly via PM for a word document which contains the rules, minus the pretty pictures and diagrams.  This should be more than enough to get people playing.  Later when the PDF is completed you can download that as well. I will not be advertising the game beyond this website until I have the full PDF completed.  However so many guys here know about the game and have been following it, that I'm comfortable emailing you guys the temporary rules etc.

Further updates:

My copy is on the way from Gamecrafter.  It has a timer on my product which is counting down from 9 days and 12 hours currently...this means I can not list the product for sale until then (this gives me time to receive my copy, view it, verify it is correct etc.).  I have decided to use a simplified Word document for the PDF.  It will still feature all of the pictures, and images, though it will lose a tiny bit of its flavour.  I will be making this available in two forms, one with a nice parchment background, and another version with a white only background, which will be more suitable for those of you wishing to print it.  So, a pretty PDF for the computer/tablet, and a less pretty one for printing.

Luckily, by using this format I can actually include hyperlinks in the PDF itself which will link to my blog, YouTube page, email address for questions etc.  I ordered some lights to help light my table for further videos - I'll be doing a dozen or so short, concise videos which demonstrate how most of the key functions of the game work.  The PDF will also include a direct link to the Gamecrafter page which will be where the game cards are available.

I've put together an email list of the guys who have asked for proof-read copies.  Most of you guys have various versions as I was churning out more and more stuff while I was emailing them.  You guys will get a full blown copy of the PDF in a week or two hopefully.  This depends on my online classes and how much time I have to spend on them.  Since most of the rules are already down in writing it is a pretty simple cut n' paste operation going on here, with some formatting, adding pictures etc.  Thanks for being patient guys!

Thanks, they're really the only tokens you'd need for the game.  They cover the major conditions your characters can have:

Wounded (blood splatter)
Shocked (yellow triangle)
Moving Fast (orange double arrows)
Hiding (blue circle)
Empty (black shell)

Looks like I'll actually have a TON of these available (bought 4-5' square of each colour...and they're small tokens).  I'll be buying them in batches, and if no one wants them for Shoot N' Skedaddle I'll just sell them off on ebay.  Should be maybe $10 shipped for a batch of 25-30 depending on how I pair them up.  I have to get the costs from Lee at Tri-City (he charges by the hour, so he'll let me know how much it costs to cut a full 1' square sheet etc.).

I figure tokens can be used for a boatload of games, so why not.  lol  The initial acrylic order I made was when I was still considering trying the Kickstarter.

DICE FOR SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE

For those who are interested in buying some matched dice (dice which match the colour/type on the SnS cards) I'll list the Chessex types here:

PQ0608 Black/White d6 w/ #'s $0.55

PQ0804 Red/White d8 $0.55

PQ1202 Yellow/Black d12 $0.55

PQ2005 Green/White d20 $0.55

I'd suggest 5 of each (the most dice you'd roll at once would be five).  I have about 20 of each, but I run conventions so I bought a bunch to have two boxes, and some spares in case people wander off with them etc.  You can order them directly from Chessex.  I don't know if any shops sell individual Chessex dice directly.

IMPORTANT: These are in no way necessary...but just an added bonus that the dice will match the icons on the cards for character stats and weapon stats etc.  You could use any dice you have on hand.

Gut...they "could" be shipped worldwide...but as with all things, it gets silly expensive the way USPS is running right now.  I don't know if I could make it worthwhile to ship a small envelope of plastic.  I'd be happy to do so, but I'm afraid the cost would be silly.

The other interesting option would be a bulk purchase by a handful of UK players of several sets of tokens - I'd ship the whole package to one person and he could toss them in a local envelope to the others.  I dunno.  lol

When I see the international shipping charges from the U.S. I'm not surprised why no one buys stuff from here.  It's simply ridiculous.  :?

I completely understand. Even home shipping is damned expensive these days. I do buy stuff from a couple of manufacturers in the States (Brigade Games, Red Box, Armorcast) but only usually when I have a bulk order or shipping is on promo.

Thinking about the tokens, I can probably get similar from Fenris Games or Dead Mans Hand tokens have most of what I'll need. It was just a case of supporting the venture at the source which I try to do as often as I can.

Eh, no big deal.  The only reason I had him cut some out and I ordered some acrylic was to have demos on hand if I had pursued the Kickstarter (one of the game packages would have come with tokens etc.).  Now that I have the acrylic etc, I'll just cut some out.  I may have him just use some of it for other tokens for other games etc.  They're not overly unique...just convenient.

I'll be making a whopping $2.29 per copy of the game which sells, and I'll be making maybe $1.00 on the tokens  lol  This is not much of a money making deal here.  :D

Well I should get my cards in the mail shortly...and I received a big honkin' box full of plastic this morning...

The tokens come with facing paper on them, which needs to be removed.  I'll probably do this as I sell each set.  That's a LOT of fingernail work...(around 3,000+ tokens...)  I'll do the math and come up with a token pack which will sell for a very reasonable price.

Token sets now available to buyers in CONUS (International orders, contact me to see if it's worthwhile).

50 tokens for $20.00 shipped.

For each additional set of tokens add $12, as the shipping/package/trip to the post office is saved.

I have plenty, so no one needs to buy them for solely SnS purposes.  They could be used for a number of other games I'm sure.

GIVEAWAY CONTEST...OR...LOTTERY!

As I'm making minor changes to the decks from this set (some are rather trivial), I will be ordering one more final set of cards.  I've decided that since this forum has been so receptive and helpful, I will be picking a name from the hat so to speak of the people here who offered to proof-read my rules.  The lucky person will receive a free set of SnS cards courtesy of...well...me.  lol

I believe I had about 8-10 people proof-read them, so your chances are good.  I'll dig up the email list tomorrow, let you guys know who's in the running, and then pick a winner! (and I'll pray you don't live in Australia!)  :D

I'm still butting my head against the wall trying to sort out two final characters, and then the cards will be on sale officially!  PDF is being worked on still, and will lag behind the release of the cards.  I'm also going to try to update my blog, and start tutorial videos (a living rulebook so to speak) sometime in the next few days, depending on my class work load.

Hah, I will ship even if you live in Australia Furt...

To answer the previous question, yes the cards are standard Poker size, and standard Tarot size.  We looked into it earlier in the thread, and the sizes match commonly available boxes as well as commonly available protector sleeves (they even make them for the Tarot cards).

I've cut up the slips of paper and will draw a name from a hat (or box...) shortly!  :)

Pocoloco, no need boss.  I'll pack it up when the new set of cards arrive (I revised the set, and ordered some spare replacements, so I can assemble two complete decks and get one of them in the mail to ya) with some tokens.

Just PM me your address.

Cheers!

PS: Cards will be available within a couple days - I'm waiting for TGC to ship my set, then I'll fix the order (removing the spare replacements) and it'll be finalized and published.  Rules can be emailed per request for anyone interested.

https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle-basic

Here is a link to the game via Gamecrafter.

I am working on the final PDF rules, but a temporary version can be emailed to anyone who purchases a copy of the game prior to me finishing them.  As mentioned earlier, a $20 package of 50 tokens is available to anyone who enjoys the game enough to invest in some.  The $20 includes shipping to all CONUS addresses.  I would ask that people post pictures of the game as they receive them, as I want to ensure that the quality level remains high from Gamecrafter.  Any issues with printing/quality etc. should be reported to Gamecrafter, but please let me know as well.

I want to make sure Gamecrafter continues to put out a quality product, as my purchases have been excellent.  Please let me know if you have any issues purchasing it.  I'll be mailing out Pocoloco's copy in a week or so, so hopefully we'll get a review from him at some point.

(back to grinding away on the PDF).

PS: Thanks for looking and for being helpful and encouraging!  You guys even get a mention in the rules, how about that?  lol

I got all excited, went to place my order got to the shipping page and...ouch! $50 USPS priority shipping it initially put me for, first class is $25, as much as the product itself. Unfortunately this means, for the moment, I cannot afford to support this great venture and get those lovely cards. I will try to get them when I have a bit more cash.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - Officially for sale!
Post by: Elbows on July 09, 2013, 08:38:43 PM
Well, if that's how much they want to charge, I'd say screw em.  Tell ya what, I will let you know how much it costs to ship a copy to pocoloco.  If it's reasonable ($12-15) I'll see about putting together a small international group buy for you guys, so I'd order a set of 5-7 of the game, and ship them personally.

I hadn't tried (obviously) ordering anything from Gamecrafter internationally...that sucks.  It's a stupidly small parcel too (four decks of cards).  That's a shame.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - Officially for sale!
Post by: Gutbukkit on July 09, 2013, 09:55:32 PM
Cheers, i appreciate it. It would be great if something could be worked out. Obviously only worth it if there are enough people internationally who want the game (I'm sure there are) and postage individually is good.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - Officially for sale!
Post by: Elbows on July 09, 2013, 11:34:30 PM
Yeah, I'll do some research, and I'll go and pick up some very small boxes (just enough to fit the game and tokens in).  Perhaps I can throw in tokens at a reduced cost, to make it a bit more worthwhile.

I'll do a test run with Pocoloco and let you guys know how much it is.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - Officially for sale!
Post by: Elbows on July 09, 2013, 11:59:27 PM
UPDATE:

So...I looked it up on USPS's site and if I purchase postage online I can ship a 1 lb. (I think the game weighs less) box for $14.63 USD...apparently anywhere.

Assuming this holds true, I can consider doing a batch of say 10 SNS games...also making tokens an options, for a bit less than Gamecrafter charges.

$25 SNS + $15 shipping + $15 if you want the 50 tokens as well...? That's probably the best I can do.  I can only drop the price if we had a huge order (ie. several hundred copies) of SnS, something I'm not financially able to do right now.  The pricing changes a bit between countries, but generally would be around the same.  So if I get five or more people interested in buying a set, let me know and I'll put something together.

PS: If anyone wants to buy a couple of sets for them and their buddies etc., that would reduce overall cost too.

Post by: Gutbukkit on July 10, 2013, 12:07:05 AM
Nice one, cheers for the update. I'll ask my gaming mates if they want a set. I'd definitely be interested in a set of all the cards and a set of tokens.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - Officially for sale!
Post by: Elbows on July 10, 2013, 12:19:46 AM
Well, I'll give it a while and see if there is any interest.  At five or more sets, I can make an order - maybe I can even order them at my non-sale price of $20.93...so I can recoupe the cost of shipping and buying boxes...we'll see.  Anyone else chime in, I checked and Australia and Botswana are both about the same to ship, so the offer stands for pretty much anyone if you're abroad.

You don't have to buy the tokens at all, I just threw the idea out there if it makes it more palatable in making an overseas purchase.  (I know I only buy stuff overseas if I'm spending enough to think it's worthwhile!) :D

And of course, everyone is encouraged to wait and see what pocoloco thinks when he gets his copy.

I don't know how cheap postage is in the UK, but yes, if I was to send one larger box to one person, shipping would be cut down dramatically --- but I don't know how much you guys pay the have stuff shuttled around that little island of yours.  lol

I'd imagine a larger box with 5-6 decks/token sets would only be $20-25 total...so if it would be cheaper to split it up once there, you guys can let me know.

PS: On Page 20 of the final PDF... :`

Just a request - if anyone orders a copy, please let me know.  I have listed a price at $24.99 but I am unable to "publish" my game because I refuse to add a box to the game (which adds $5 to the cost...for something NO ONE will use).  I'm curious if I'll actually get any money if it's not published, even though it lists a profit of $2.84.

Please let me know.  I'd actually be fine even if they give it to me in store credit, as I'll just turn around, buy copies myself and then sell them etc.  But if anyone buys a copy, please let me know, so I can see how this works.

The first of many videos (it's tiring and annoying to make these in my cramped freakin' apartment...).  I'll try to get around to actual gameplay videos in the next few days, but these should introduce some of the concepts.

The videos are being kept as short and concise as possible.  When the gameplay videos are posted they will likely miss some of the minor special rules, but will essentially give you an idea of how the game plays...STAY TUNED!

Yeah...seen some issues with it from other people too.  Here's the thing.

It's not "officially" published.  In order to publish it, I'm required to add a box to the game - a useless addition of $5 I refuse to do.  CptJake was able to buy it somehow, so I'll see what I can do.

^This is the same link, but worked a second ago.  I don't understand why.

OHHHH...I changed the name of the game title, so perhaps that ruined the page.  Try it now, if you'd like.

Okay, if you guys get a small UK "group buy" going, I can do the following:

$25 per set of cards (normal price)
$15 per set of tokens (since they'll be shipping together)
$25 international shipping for one box (to be distributed by one of you guys)

And I'll let you guys work out the local postage between yourselves.  I'll order the sets of cards at my discounted rate of about $20.93 so your payment will cover the cost of me having the stuff shipped to my house, etc.

If anyone else is interested in a group buy, I'll arrange something similar depending on where you are.  If I wasn't broke with a piss poor job right now I'd actually just spend $3-4K and buy a hundred sets of the cards so I could actually make some damn money off of them.  lol

I have some serious classwork for tomorrow and the next day, but expect more videos and a more finalized PDF early next week.  I'll be sending out a preview PDF to the mailing list in case anyone gets the cards early.

There's one deck available on amazon.co.uk for £5 (not much use as you need two decks). The bicycle expert deck is readily available on eBay for £5. That's where I got mine as I prefer the bicycle deck for the "dirty" look.

Well, I can source them for about $7.50 per deck here...so if you're willing to pay $15+shipping (whatever it costs for them to mail them to me) then yes, I could put it all together.  I do not have a source for cheap ones.

Looks like you have some sources:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/1572810963/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

They are as cheap if not cheaper than any way I can get them here, without a big bulk purchase.

I searched "1864 Highlanders" for your reference.

Yeah, I have both Bicycle and Highlanders and really prefer the Highlanders.  Much more of a replica deck.  You'll dig them.  I take both sets with me when I travel (two is one, and one is none and all that...).  I try to keep backup stuff for most of my games in case I lose stuff or someone gets sticky hands around the game table.

Well, lets see who is in as, in an ideal world, we need at least five of us to make it worthwhile.

I am assuming that Malamute, Gutbukkit and myself make three.
Anyone else?

By the way: Tokens are not my thing, so I wont be needing any of those.
This may mean we can get another person in on the order.

Well, just let me know guys - if it becomes more than 4-5 I may have to bump shipping, as each set of cards is 184 cards and not exactly "light" so I don't know how much weight will affect it all.

If it ends up being 10-15 guys, it'll definitely be more for a total charge of shipping (but likely remain relatively cheap per person).  I may link the TMP thread over here, not sure if anyone is interested over there (probably the same crowd).

Well I just spent way too long designing a box...so that I can publish the game.  Guys are still encouraged to click on the direct link.  The boxed version will be $29.99 and you get nothing special, just a foam framed box to hold your cards in.  I had to order a copy of that version (it's called "Boxed Version" imagine that!).  Eventually that version will be placed on the gamecrafter site so if people google and find it, it will be available for sale.

Everyone is encouraged though to buy the non-boxed version for $5 less...unless you love boxes.  I'll post pictures when my copy arrives, it looks like a neat box.  I also may take some boxed copies to conventions to sell them directly, if people are interested.

I don't mind doing redistribution.  Won't be able to do it for a couple of weeks though. I'll have to wait till payday and for my reenactment weekends to be out of the way.

Fine with me too.

So we need at least one or two other people. ???

Not essential, but splitting the postage that way would be nice, and makes sense as we will still have to pay for shipping within UK.
(Hopefully they will fit in a large letter slot...works out nice and cheap that way... ;))

Cool, mine still haven't been printed yet (well the new set I had to order).  It normally takes 4-5 days for them to print stuff (since they're made to order, they're placed in a queue when ordered).

I really hate the videos, but since I said I'd do them...I'm doing them.  lol

Good, glad everything is visible.  I know the pics are bad...I'll work on those!

So, Crancko asked me about solitaire rules, so I'd like to solicit some opinions.  While the game itself is randomly driven by various card decks, what additional solitaire capable features would you guys like?  A table to roll on for the "opposition" to see what they do?  What kind of solitaire mechanics do you guys like best?

I'd be willing to add some ideas to the rulebook for sure.  I think the game plays well solo...but a player is required to act on behalf of each character it draws.  If you'd prefer more autonomous play, I'd like some ideas and I'll work out a table you can roll on to aid in solitaire gaming.  Shoot me some ideas guys.

I got my cards yesterday (though they may have been delivered Friday).   They came will packed and look great.   I've not gone through them in detail yet, nor had a chance to check out the PDF, but the cards are well printed, and look really good.   The weapons, lawmen and outlaw cards come intermingled so you need to sort them out (took all of a couple minutes).

Now to go through the PDF and see if I can lay out a game this week (may be hard as I may need to travel for work).

Elbows,

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but I have been on vacation and away from my computer for a week or so. I have read through the PDF you sent me, and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I ordered your cards from Gamecrafter two weeks ago and I finally got an email from them today saying they were shipped.(Woo-Hoo!!!) Add that to the fact that my darling wife ordered me about $200.00 worth of custom made terrain for my birthday, and I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!! The suspense is killing me! :o
As soon as I get the cards I will try to run a game and give a battle report.

Colour me jealous...I've been slaving away the past two nights on some small additions to Drake's Branch myself...and still planning my next big 4Ground purchase.  lol  I'm actually excited seeing the "light at the end of the tunnel" for the Old West stuff.  I have maybe 20 more minis to paint, a boatload of horses (argh) and then it'll be done...minus buying up an odd building now and then.  A few more terrain pieces are planned, but I feel pretty comfortable that I've covered all of my bases.

I'm anxious to see results from people getting to play SnS without me present.  I'm sure the games will generate questions etc. that I'll add/answer in the rules.

The game is available now.

CARDS: Available in boxed ($30) or unboxed ($25).

Boxed: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle-boxed-version-

Unboxed: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle

RULES: PDF is about 80% done, but is complete enough to play.  This I can email to you, when finalized it will be hosted somewhere as a free download.

TOKENS: I have tokens available separately, 50 tokens for $20 shipped to CONUS addresses.

Availability overseas is poor right now.  International shipping is a bit insane ($18-25 to ship the $25 item...) so unless you're in the UK where they may be doing a small bulk order, I can't really offer any solutions.  I enjoy the game, but my price point has always been $25+/-.  I can't really vouch for whether or not the game is worth $45-50 shipped to another country.  There are three or four copies out right now with some guys on this forum, so we'll hopefully get some reviews at some point.  Even Pocolocos may have shown up in Finland.

If you're interested in the rules PDF, PM me your email address and I will send you a copy.  I want the rules free so people can read through them first before investing any money.

Sorry for the long absence from the forums Gents (and Ladies), 1.5 months of summer holidays can have that effect and now I need to find my hobby mojo back and regards to that:

See what I got from the post today!

Beautiful, top-notch stuff! I know this will surely make me to do Old West scenery again and hopefully paint some OW types so that I can properly game with the SNS rules. Before fondling the cards too much with my butter-fingers I want to get some protective sleeves from my FLGS to keep those fine and pristine cards as beautiful they are now.

Many thanks for Elbows for such a wonderful prize, I'm not worthy. I think I must name some character as El Codo in your tribute :D

Hopefully I will get hobbying soon enough.

The tokens were a bit of a mistake actually.  I purchased a bulk of them when I was considering doing a Kickstarter...so I ended up with 3000+ tokens, but no kickstarter (which would have included them etc.).  So they're available directly through me.   lol

I just sent a couple of more guys the rules.  So if you asked for them, check your email.

Pocoloco, hope to see a game at some point! Glad they arrived, and glad you didn't have to pay through the nose to get your mits on them!  lol

I recently finished some college courses so I'm hoping to get back to completing the PDF.  Having research papers due really killed my enthusiasm to sit down and type more!  :D

I sold off five boxed copies at the convention, but mostly to buddies who had been playtesting etc.  I hope to have time this weekend to really put in some work on the PDF, as I've become invigorated again with the project.  I was getting "reckless" and trying too hard to put stuff to paper, which ended up with me deleting a good dozen pages.

I do hope to have a PDF copy of the cards available sometime when I figure out how to format them correctly so they print in proper sizes etc.  This will be cheaper than the boxed cards, but will allow people to download and play on the cheap.  The card sets (boxed and unboxed) will remain available.

I picked up a couple of good ideas and errors at the convention...I also learned that when you plan on hosting a Cowboy game, it's often important to actually bring cowboy miniatures with you... :?

The rules PDF will remain free.

The rules PDF w/ cards included in the PDF will be $10.

The card sets will remain available at $25 (unboxed) and $30 (boxed).

Confused yet?  lol (and yes, I had my gladiators with me...just...no cowboys, but I had some buddies there who luckily scrounged up some Old West figures for me to use!)

So, Poco, you're not going to need to buy anything.  You're good to go.  I just wanted to include the option to play it "on the cheap" especially for other international customers.  This will also provide a cheap way for players to play the game, decide if they want to actually invest in some proper cards.  As this is a new development anyone who has purchased cards and feels screwed by the new cheaper alternative on the way can contact me and I'll give you a refund out of my own pocket.  I'm not here to screw anyone over.  I just think a cheaper PDF option is a reasonable addition.

Oh, almost forgot...I snapped a handful of pictures from the convention (forgot to the entire first game, so I only snapped shots of the board).  The second game (the huge one) was played on a buddy's table, since we were sharing.  This table saw lots of action with four different games from different periods being played out on it over the weekend!

The large game started slow (I think a few too many players, some disinterested from the get-go).  It ended up in a ridiculous nail-biter with kids screaming, and a seriously close finish...

Update:

Firstly, apologies for the PDF mailing group...I've been going round and round on the campaign rules.  I've written and deleted them about a dozen times.  Can't find that "got it" version just yet.  I am sitting here surrounded by stacks of notes/paper (crumpled and clean!), heck even boxes and envelopes have ended up with notes on them... :?

I have transposed all of the cards to a PDF version which will be available shortly.  The PDF cards will require 30-35 pages of print, double that if you wish to print backs/fronts.  I do not have the software to prepare the files so they could be printed on double-sided prints.  I will be dropping by the local print shop to test the quality of the PDF version of the cards before putting it up for sale.

While this is not the best solution it will make the game cheaper for players, particularly those abroad.  I hope that with some nice card stock the cards will be plenty useful (particularly if placed in card-holders/protectors).  It will also offer a cheaper option for the stingy types.   ;)  The PDF rules will remain free.

The PDF cards will be around $10, with a discount for multiple copies (though to be fair, I know a file such as this can be easily sent all over the internet...just hope that isn't the case with most fellas).  Will post back when I have tested the PDF quality.

The PDF rules will remain free.

The PDF of the cards will be $10.

The card sets remain on sale from Gamecrafter for $25/$30.

The PDF cards are just to make the game more readily available, though by the time you print the cards out on cardstock etc. it may be as pricy as just buying the cards outright.  However, with it costing me $35 minimum to ship a damn box to the UK, I want to make the game accessible to people in other countries.

Overall not bad at all, on heavy cardstock.  I'm going to see if I can design them so they can be printed double-sided, as they're two-piece construction now.  I've slotted the character card into one of the "gaming tarot" sized sleeves.  The detail is a bit less than the actual printed cards, but is completely acceptable.  The PDF version will be available when I determine if I can set the pages up for back-to-back printing (if anyone does design and can help me, please let me know!)

Um...I'm thinking about it.  I know some of my buddies are going - so I may try to.  Depends on the cash flow, just sheer gas money becomes several hundred dollars from here to there.  I used to live in PA nearby though, so it'd be a drive I know very well.

Also I've never hosted at a big-time convention...more off-the-cuff stuff locally.  I'd imagine I'm probably too late to host (not that I wouldn't still love to attend it).  I'll check it out.

That'd be great to see the game and be able to pick up a set of the cards. I didn't go back through the 19 pages and wanted to ask if you had a link to those cards you showed on the Ep1 video of the 1860's cards? Those are pretty nifty. Hope to see you in Lancaster!

Well, I'm really late to register, so I'm guessing there probably won't be room.  But why not take a crack at it.  I have a buddy or two who are going.  If I go, I will have a couple of boxes on hand (and tokens which are free at conventions).

Regarding the playing cards, there were some links a few pages back.  They're "Highlander 1864" cards.  Easy to google, currently produced by a company here in the US.  I got mine off of some random 'Old West' fan site for reenactors.  They run about $3-6 a pack depending on where you find them.

If you have any issue registering let me know. I am on staff for the convention (I'm one of the guys running the flea market) and I know the convention director. I might, and I stress might, be able to assist if you run into a snag. I know myself and Mr Grub would like a set of your cards.

And thanks for that tip and info. I'll do some searching for the cards.

Ah, I was going to ask - how and where do I access the flea market?  I have a ton of stuff I'd like to get rid of for cheap and ebay-ing just takes way too damn long.  I'll check the site, but that'd be another reason I'd really like to go (heck I may go anyway just to sell stuff and play games).

If I get to host it'll be listed under: "Rough Passage" - American Old West, 1870's as the game title.  It'll be a ferry crossing scenario (been meaning to do some new terrain and try something a bit different).  Just after registering last night I painted up a half dozen of my last figures and started on four more horses.  Conventions are great motivators to get stuff done (especially when I'm hosting/advertising my own game).

This time, I plan on actually bringing miniatures... >:( lol

If you don't pre-register you can purchase a table when you arrive. The Saturday afternoon session normally has open tables for purchase. The cost is 20.00 per session. There is a Friday afternoon Flea Market Session, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon although the Saturday morning is normally booked by now. I always preferred the Saturday afternoon myself for selling. Hope to see you there.

Well, no word back on whether or not I'll be hosting at Fall In! or not.

Question for the players...do you guys prefer maps with your campaigns?  I've been hemming and hawing over my campaign system...which has now been through numerous drafts.  I'm torn between requiring a simple map (easily drawn up by players) or not.  Any preference?

The overall campaign process will be very simple, but the campaign map use would make it a bit more strategic from a campaign side of things (requiring players to attempt to outmaneuver each other on the map, etc.). :?
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - PDF version printed for previews...

It depends how the map is to be used. Will it be a more localised map with key strategic features represented or a broader outlook with different towns? An example map of either would be great but as many peoples towns will be located in various locations in the US, a map to suit everyone may be difficult.

I guess what I'm trying to say is yes I like maps but as an example of how to set up my own.
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - PDF version printed for previews...

The map would be something like this (I would provide a couple of sample maps, but mainly the players would create their own map prior to the campaign):

The idea being you have three sizes of "locations": camps, towns, cities.  There are three methods of travel: roads, cross country trails, and railway lines.  A campaign turn would involve players secretly noting down the movement of their posse or gang (different types of travel being different speeds/etc.).  Movement would be revealed and any location where opposing posses/gangs meet a game would take place.

This would open it up to numerous posses/gangs partaking in a campaign (either free-for-all or team based).  Also I allowed posses or gangs to split up if desired.  Each type of location determines the ability of a posse or gang to recruit new characters or buy new weapons.

A very simple concept.  Following a game, resolution tables handle the development or fate of characters depending on whether or not they were taken out of action.  By using a map, players can create more of a sense of unity to their games, and the locations could also provide the impetus for designing scenarios...allowing the players to create the narrative.

Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - PDF version printed for previews...

The alternative would be abstract, simply rolling a dice to see what kind of location you enter etc.  I am thinking the map is more entertaining.  I think I'll pursue this angle a bit more.  Damn PDF is going to be 70+ pages by the time I'm done... :-X

Elbows: nice map, I like the style.

Three sizes of human habitation seems like too few. There is a really big jump from camp to town. Howabout: Camp, Outpost, Town, City??

Symbols improvements occur to me:
--Camps: hollow black outline star.
--Outpost: solid black star.
--Town: Hollow Gold Star.
--City: Hollow Gold Star inscribed in Black Circle.
Different symbols would save having to put "(Camp/Town...)" etc. under each place name.

Also, what about a fourth method of travel? Cutting across county/blazing a new trail (instead of following an existing trail). If somebody tried to go strait from Moore Station to San Cristobol, for example.

Yeah, the map is just a sample.  I expect plenty of people will either scratch them down on a piece of paper or create nice big cork-board maps, etc.  I will probably do a better image for the map.

Regarding the number of locations...three is simple and fits with the dice scheme which they apply to.  The type of location only serves to identify how many characters/weapons a posse or gang can recruit/purchase, and what kind of medical care is available (there are four levels, one of which is free).  The vast majority of the campaign stuff will come from tables (I love me some random tables...heck I love EVERYTHING randomized when possible).  As with everything else, if players want to add on heaps of detail etc.  I've got zero problems with it.

As far as cross-country goes, the dotted lines already represents a hardship.  Using a cross-country trail requires a roll on the cross-country table which is rather hazardous (50% chance something awful happens to ya).  Though in theory the players could feel free to draw dotted lines from every location to every other one (or simply use this as their own house rule).  I wanted to limit some of the locations so that players can hunt each other down, and corner each other.  While I've yet to play a campaign myself, it's a pretty brutal campaign.  Thus I like to give players the actual chance of winning a campaign.

So the things you mentioned can be done, though I don't think I'll be adding a fourth location.  I do think it'd be neat to adjust the campaign halfway through by adding new travel paths, such as a railroad company finishing a new set of track, or a new path being forged between previously unconnected locations etc.  I've always been a huge fan of house rules, so I hope players take the game and make it their own - adding or removing whatever they see fit.

The artwork is very nice to work with, and I'm making progress - not as fast as I'd have liked, but I've had a terribly hectic few days. Hopefully in a week or so, I should be done with fiddling on so as to make the cards printable double-sided - also hoping to get more on each page too, so as to reduce printing costs, whilst also keeping the file sizes down, so as to reduce download times - but without adversely affecting image quality.

The issue I can see with maps is folks like to name their own Wild West towns.   If you provide named locations player's own locations won't match.   Alternatively you could use historical names/locations but then you limit folks to a certain geography (border town near Mejico vice frontier town on the plains for example).

Jake, the only maps I would provide would be sample maps.  The players would be responsible for producing their own map for their own campaign (unless they were lazy, hence the sample maps).  Obviously, people would also be able to take old historical maps and convert them into a campaign map if they wanted.

The campaign would in no way be restricted to the sample maps.

Update:

I'll be hosting a game of Shoot N' Skedaddle at 6:00 PM (1800) at Fall-In! 2013 on Saturday.  Game will be for 6 players (maybe can cram in an additional player or two).  As I do at all conventions, any spare tables/space throughout the weekend, I may try to set up an additional game.  I may try to one or two on Sunday morning etc.  I'm like a vulture at conventions.

SnS boxed copies will be available for $30 - including a free set of tokens (something I do at conventions).  Even if you don't get in on the game, swing by the table and say hello!

For those of you who have received the current copy of the rules PDF, someone mentioned the text wasn't showing up on an IPad.  I'd like to get some feedback from various users if you can let me know if your PDF works and what you're using (windows tablet, etc., smart phone, ipad etc.).

That's a serious issue for me, but if it just requires a change of font for the iPad or something, I can accommodate that.  So, please let me know if anyone is having issues with the PDF's appearance and on what kind of device.  Thanks!

I'm close to having a "final" draft ready I guess.  Things that'll be added still:

-table of contents
-recovery roll rules
-more special rules
-scenario suggestions
-sample maps
-posse/gang sheet
-cheat sheet
-supporters/thanks/links page

Okay, so maybe not as close as I thought, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Only 10-15 more pages I'd guess! :D

I missed your game at Southern Front due to hosting another game at the same time, but one of the participants hosted a game in Durham, NC last week. Nice game. The gunfighting rules are great. The components are top shelf. I have some concerns about the close combat probabilities, but easily changed if necessary. I think you have a winner here.

Ah, you must have gamed with Ryan.  I intentionally nerfed close combat compared to a number of other games.  Like you said though, easily changed if players wish to make it more violent.  I find a few too many games make close combat much more deadly than shooting, etc.  Once SnS is done and I take a reasonable break, work on some other projects etc. I plan on likely coming back and producing a Plains War expansion which will introduce Indians and Cavalry as two new factions (hinted at by the prototype cards earlier in this thread).  Needless to say the Indians will be quite good at close combat by comparison.

I hope you enjoyed the games.  :)

Yes. Ryan hosted the game. After soccer season ends, I plan on gaming more with him in Cary. (You may remember me as Brian and Kyle's friend that also offered to lend you miniatures at Southern Front if you needed more.)

I did enjoy the game.

I actually had a different take on close combat.

The scenario was 3:10 to Yuma. I played the Lawmen getting a hostage (Bad-guy gang leader) to the train within the time limit. I had a Marshal (rifle/dual six-guns), Judge (sawed-off shotgun/derringer), Doctor(shotgun) and Cowboy (Winchester/lariat/Colt 45). The outlaws were a Shootist (dual six-guns), Lady with 2 six-guns, thug with a gun, Hired Gun with rifle and a rich guy with a rifle.

With a mixture of tactical play and semi-hot dice rolling. I killed 4 of the outlaws leaving only the weak, wounded "rich guy" while losing only the doctor. Steamroll right? The "return from the dead" outlaw card turns, reviving the Thug.

The problem was the Thug vs. the Judge. With 1 wound, the Judge was hopeless when based by the Thug. My Judge couldn't use the derringers. I feared leaving combat with the very high probability that I would lose the Judge and release the hostage/prisoner. I used the cowboy to try to lariat the Thug and used the Marshal to shoot into the melee. In the end all died. Fair result, but hardly thematic with the Judge representing a heroic figure. Even unwounded, the Judge would be terrified of a lowly thug in a throw down.

I did the math after the game.
A) Just a d6 vs d8 in close combat is nearly a 2:1 advantage to the stronger pugilist.
B) A d8 vs a last chance d6 (common for wounded figures) is nearly 3:1.
C) A d12 vs a last chance d6 is over 10:1.

Some house rule ideas that I considered to fix what I perceived as an issue...

1) Wounds can't drive close combat below d6.
2) Reducing the free blow suffered exiting close combat to 1 dice lower than the opponent regularly inflict. (d8 is reduced to d6.)
3) Converting the opposed dice rolls to all d12's.
+1 for d8 pugilists.
+2 or +3 for d12 pugilists. (Character by character assessment.)
-2 for last chance d6 pugilists.

While I haven't done the math for the third "fix", the odds seem closer to what I think more ideal.

A) 1.3:1
B) 2.0:1
C) 3.0:1

Just my thoughts, reflecting my preference for this genre of games to be decided by gunplay. I think flattening the differences in close combat helps achieve than end. I really like the game.

Cheers,
Robert

Unfortunately...what you described is part of why I designed the game like that.   lol

D12 vs. "Last Chance" = A normal citizen off the street suffers a broken arm...then gets into a fight with a trained UFC fighter.  lol  We know how that'll end 9 times out of 10.  :-X

Two characters of similar skill and ability share a decent chance of beating each other down.  A wounded character with poor Scrap to start with should lose horribly to a character who excels in close combat (the Thug being one of them).  I suppose the Thug can more accurately be labeled a big huge bruiser.  The Judge is not a great fighting character, whereas the Thug is almost solely useful in close combat.  So it will always be an obnoxiously difficult fight for the Judge - much more so if he's wounded.

That being said, I always encourage house rules if players want to use them.  If I understand your incident correctly, it may have been worth trying to rush more characters into close combat.  The outnumbering characters then all gain +1 Scrap, and when activated, the player with multiple characters is allowed to fight each combat individually in an order he chooses.

PS: Also, when revived the Thug should also have remained wounded.  That should have taken him down to Scrap D8 (making him much easier to tackle with a couple additional characters).

In the end, I encourage anyone to play it however they feel works best.  The beauty of games like SnS is that they are not intended for any kind of tournament play.   :D
Title: Re: SHOOT N' SKEDADDLE - PDF version printed for previews...
Post by: religon on October 24, 2013, 01:57:41 AM
Thanks for the response. I'm reassured that the math is well considered and intended.

As for the specifics of the scenario, the Thug was fought off once and killed. When revived, he came back at Scrap d8, wounded. The only relief the Judge could get was from the Cowboy who failed a charge test for close combat. The lariat had worked before, shocking the Thug and allowing the Judge to run off, so it was attempted again. (I'm unsure if this was official or Ryan's scenario rule allowing a lariat into melee and allowing a disengage.) The Marshal was too far off to join the fray. It was the underlying probabilities leading to scenario resolution through melee rather than gunfire that gave me pause.

Even had the Cowboy managed to double-team the Thug, he would need to fight the wounded Thug even (d8 vs. d8). The lariat stands the same 50% chance at no risk to the Cowboy and most importantly, doesn't trigger a fight with the Judge if the Thug wins the first fight and survives. With even chances for the Thug to win while the Cowboy fights first, the Judge would then only have a 33% chance of prevailing in the event of a second fight vs. the Thug (d6 vs. d8). (The first fight against the unwounded Thug was much more difficult for the Lawmen.)

Some of the disconnect between the story and the mechanics may have been that the Thug model was an elderly prospector with a single-shot rifle instead of Corporal Wallace (Mario Brega) of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. As the math works out, Corporal Wallace might be more of a Scrap d8 and a d12 reserved for an especially rank Grizzly Bear. :)

Cheers,
Robert

FWIW: In the mid-portion of the game, I drew a "Shootout" card allowing me the option to have my Judge with a sawed-off shotgun square off against the Shootist with 2 pistols. As I considered the option, Ryan advised me against it as the Shootist was one of the most deadly characters. I opted to have the shootout contrary to the advice and prevailed. I think the math supports my choice with about a 45% chance the Judge is killed in the first exchange and about a 65% chance the Shootist is killed. (I also got a free reload of the empty shotgun in the bargain.) That is how the Judge got the first wound as he directed another outlaw to Boot Hill.

Just the scenario you ran into gave me some special rules or exceptions to add to the rules.

I think a lasso into close combat is fine, but would suffer the same chance of missing and ensnaring the wrong person.  It would then Shock the target which I think would definitely allow a free escape from close combat - OR - the Thug would suffer an additional -1 to his close combat for the next activation of fighting (then removing the shocked token as per close combat rules).

At the time you guys played I didn't have the handcuff rules printed out - as they are now in the rules.

Now, I don't know if I typed it up, but when a group of characters in close combat outnumbers an enemy character, the characters who outnumber may leave combat without a penalty (until the combat becomes 1 vs. 1 at which point the normal rules kick in).  I'll have to see if that's actually written into the "multiple combat" rules or not.  This would have given you an option depending on the draw of cards and who activated first.

At the heart of your situation was really one of the best close combat characters vs. a non-combatant (while the Judge sounds all heroic, he's more comfortable swinging a gavel than his fist, is really more in line with the Town Person type of character - not really suitable for a fierce fight).

Glad you won the shootout - always dicey with a shotgun as you have one chance before suffering a reload action.  Every shootout I've seen has been wildly different...something that never ceases to amuse me.

Of course I think what we've learned here: Shoot the Thug.  A lot.*

*During a game at Siege of Augusta the Lawmen ran into a very sturdy Thug who was shot once...then twice...then finally killed...then revived...then shot again.  The players asked if they could go and shoot him directly in the head while he was down.  I allowed them to do this (though there were no more revive cards in the deck).  He gave them a lot of trouble.

 lol

PS: I toyed around with the idea of a character gaining a +1 bonus to Guts when charging into a multiple combat with an ally.  Do you think this makes sense?  More akin to run into a fight when your buddy is in trouble, less thinking about your own neck?  Or something like allowing a re-roll, or ignoring the Guts test altogether?

I was unaware of the 2 vs. 1 allows one of the characters to disengage. In my situation, would the Cowboy have needed to charge the wounded Thug to relieve the helpless Judge? This would have triggered two consecutive close combats in the order of my choice. Likely Cowboy then Judge. The next Judge activation would then allow him to escape if the Thug doesn't activate first?

The lesson to Shoot the Thug.  A lot. was readily apparent even to a novice player like myself. That is how the Thug was killed before his revival. (And ultimately killed the second time by shooting into combat.)

Bonuses on the charge roll or auto-success when joining a fray seem reasonable. I don't think it is enough to prevent the dynamic where d8 and d12 Scrap characters prey on wounded d8 characters and unharmed d6 characters. Few scenarios are going to allow second and third characters from joining a brawl with as few figures as this game typically places on the table. They are busy fighting off other characters. Convention games with turn limits, objectives or time limits also make large quagmires less of an option than in club or solo games.

Some gamers like the dynamic of shoot the bad brawler before he gets to you as a counter. I know that Warhammer Fantasy Battles has this as the counter to big monsters. Shoot them with a cannon before they hit your lines. It's a wildly popular game, but it seems the game's outcome is often decided by whether the monster can reach the lines before being shot.

With the Guts bonus for entering a fray, the following might keep Scrap d12 characters very powerful, but not such that players feel the need to stake them through the heart after they are killed.

Fight for Your Life (for all Characters)
Wounds do not reduce Scrap d6 below that threshold.

One Tough Hombre
Reduce the characters Scrap value from d12 to d8, however if he wins the close combat and has not already activated twice in the turn, he may use a future activation to trigger another close combat immediately. When the next activation card is turned, the Tough Hombre must place it in the discard pile rather than activate. Tough Hombres ignore wounds with regard to close combat (always a Scrap of d8).

Outside of melee, the game is pitch perfect...cover, Guts tests, reloads, the math, theme, etc. I wish to be constructive. Just my thoughts. I'm sure others think close combat is great in the current form.

Cheers,
Robert

Question for the guys who have played the game or read the rules:

Moving Fast: Currently a character who moves MORE than 12" is counted as Moving Fast (which applies a -1 penalty to characters who shoot at them).  This is done so that mounted characters and only a handful of particularly fast characters can benefit from this - the few characters who have a Move value of 8", as opposed to the normal 6".

Would players prefer this be 12" or More?  (allowing all characters to possibly Move Fast if they roll a 6 when attempting to run?)

Initially I misread this to be 12" or more. It was brought to my attention by Tom just before he contacted you for clarification. I have been giving the modifier to anyone who has a 6" movement and rolls a 6 for running, just so everyone has a chance to move fast.

Legionaire - I'll be making that change to 12"+ (this gives most people a chance to run for their lives and I like that idea...I think)

Slaughter at Two Buckets River

To test a scenario for Fall In 2013, I managed to convince my brother to come over and game it with me.  We scaled it down from 9 vs. 9 to 6 vs. 6.  Without spilling too many details the goal here is for the Outlaws to flee across a Ferry crossing and escape off the board.

The board...(ignore the floor, we're rennovating the space slowly...it's a destroyed attic to a garage)

All of these pictures were taken after the game...merely showing the aftermath.

The river is another section of similar nautical vinyl, just cut out and laid on top.  It's quick and works, and since "river" scenarios will be a bit scarce, it's the cheapest way I could do it easily.

Highlights:
-Both posse and gang were rather shoot bunches (Shootist, Drifter, several Hired Guns, etc.)
-The Outlaw leader was gunned down before he ever activated...failing to guide a pack mule (loaded with precious goods)

The Bad Man was gunned down before he could even turn around...

The Lawmen get the Outlaws on the run and are about to catch them at the Ferry crossing when an ill-resolved shootout puts down one of the Deputies.  The Outlaw hired gun is shot down by the shootist...only to revive a moment later and wound the Shootist.  The Drifter takes a hostage and calmly walks onto the Ferry, with a prospector guiding the second packmule onto the ferry.

Once on the ferry the Drifter discards the hostage into the water, as he was taking up critical space.  The wounded Hired Gun operates the ferry, sending his comrades to safety.

The Lawmen watch as the Outlaws flee across the river.

The Hired Gun is finished by a Shootout with a priest, and the Marshal arrives late (having concentrated on special cards rather than moving into the fray).

The mended Shootist storms ashore, chasing down the Outlaws

In desperation the Lawmen's Shootist dove into the water, as the Priest pulled on the ferry, bringing it back.  The Shootist crawled aboard and shot as he was pulled over to the far side.  In a blaze of gunfire the Shootist storms onto the shore, killing the Hired Gun, and then the Drifter...even the pack mule.

The Ferry at Two Buckets River...a horrible ending.

On the far side of the river, two Outlaws and two Lawmen had engaged, with one of the Outlaws fleeing.  A Town Person had crept up onto a nearby rocky outcrop, leapt onto the roof of the Ferry house and had been firing wildly with his lever action.  He was shot directly in the face with a Shotgun and died, his body sliding off the roof.

The brave Town Person met an untimely end...

The bloody end to the fight.

The game swung wildly both ways and was rather poor luck on the Outlaws side (they lost a character from a special card while the Lawmen gained one).  While they seemed doomed, the Outlaws then made a miraculous return to the form, killing several Lawmen.  In the end the lone Shootist saved the day.  He was the recipient of no less than three consecutive "activate X" special cards...allowing him to go on a one-man rampage against the fleeing Outlaws.

Overall a good game, lots of laughs and typically impossible situations.  A few tweaks and the scenario should be set for Fall In.  With more characters per side, the mayhem may be even more extreme.

I have had the card decks at work for a while now, and bloody brilliant they look too!

I have left them there as I know I will be seriously distracted by them if I take them home.

Once BLAM is out of the way I shall be taking a 'proper' look and moving into the Old West in a more 'serious' way.

An AAR will not be far off, I reckon.

PDF Cards Available

Well guys, thanks to the brilliant work of Mr. Phil, I can now offer a PDF version of the Shoot N' Skedaddle cards.  Phil took the art for the cards and created PDFs for each deck, including backs, so the cards can now be printed double-sided.

Disclaimer: The PDF version of the cards was created for people who wanted to play on the cheap or international buyers who can't stomach the obnoxious cost of shipping stuff from the US.  Unless you have access to free high quality printing, it may end up being more expensive producing the cards in this format than simply buying the pre-made cards.  PDF+Cost of printing on quality card stock+card protectors = more than simply buying the cards directly from Gamecrafter (if you're in the US).

The PDF cards are available directly from me, so please PM me.  Cost is $10 for normal gamers, but $8 for anyone who PMs me here through Lead Adventure.

Will the game eventually be available in a full, hard copy set?  I used to be able to print with impunity when I was working, but since I've retired, I no longer have that luxury.

I doubt it.  However, since the rulebook is technically a PDF file, I know there are "self publish" sites which you simply upload a PDF and you can order a printed book version.  I have no idea of the cost of this kind of venture though.  Perhaps it's something I will research.  Shoot N' Skedaddle has been a serious learning curve for me, running everything essentially by myself.  I've made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I'm eager to learn from them and streamline everything next project I decide to take up.

In the final PDF form there will be a quick reference sheet of some sort.  I do believe that one of these and a quick read through of the rules would do fine by most people.  Now, I won't rule out a Version 2 in a year or two, maybe if I find a way to get in touch with a proper printer or manufacturer.  There is nothing I'd like more than to offer a boxed copy of the game with all of the cards, dice, a small printed rulebook etc. for $45 or so...but without doing a production run of 5,000+ copies this just isn't a reality for me at the moment.

SnS as it stands now:

Rulebook: PM me directly for a current copy - in proof-reading/finalizing stages now.  Rules are fully sufficient for Skirmish gaming.

PDF Cards: PM me directly for a paypal invoice.  $10 for a copy, or $8 if you PM me through Lead Adventure.

Game Cards (No box): https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle  ($24.99)

Game Cards (Boxed): https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle-boxed-version-  ($30.00)

To get them to hold shape if you use weaker paper you can simply buy the card protectors - would work pretty well.  Get a box of ones with different colour backs to identify the decks.  This would prevent you from needing to print the front and back of each deck.

I figure some people will be printing them out in B&W on "the cheap" so to speak.  Play a bunch of games, and if you end up really liking it, pick up some proper cards later if you think you'll get your money's worth.

By all means post pics, and of course opinions.  :D

New PDF sent out to the test-reading audience.  Honing in on the final version (though it'll be updated as needed in the future).

Also, per request by a couple of people I've added a Blank Card expansion to the Gamecrafter site.

https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle:-blank-card-expansion

^This provides players with a large load of blank cards from each of the decks, and includes stickers which can be used for dice values if desired (though this may interfere with shuffling of the deck, it'll work fine if you have card sleeves).

Hey everybody,

Given some feedback and some further playtesting I decided to modify the Close Combat system a good bit (the January 7th PDF contains the latest version).  As such, this invalidates a single character card, the Prize Fighter.

The Prize Fighter's special ability currently read: The Prize Fighter may roll two Scrap dice and pick the highest result.  He also rolls normal Strength damage even when unarmed.

This special ability should now read: The Prize Fighter rolls two Scrap dice in Close Combat, allowing him to strike up to twice per activation.  The Prize Fighter uses his normal Strength value when unarmed.

As this change was rather unforeseen (last minute rules change...ugh) I have purchased a set of 30 new Prize Fighter cards.  If you desire, please get in touch with me and I will mail you a new one when they arrive (a week or two).  If you're not interested in receiving a replacement card, please simply use the new special ability (you can also simply mark out "...and pick the highest result").

Sorry for this.  I had no real plans of changing the system this late in the game, but I do think it plays better.  Humble apologies!

Hey all,

Sad to see that "no one has posted in this thread in 120 days..." message on my own thread!  lol

Anyway, been really busy and working on some other projects but with school winding down I'm going to turn more attention SnS and try to finish/finalize the PDF etc.

I've started hosting the current rules PDF for free on the Gamecrafter pages with the cards.  From now on rules will be updated via this site and I'll put notice on the blog or via email that a new set is out, instead of emailing a group of people the rules.  So anyone who's been too lazy to email me about rules - feel free to check them out for free.

https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle-boxed-version-

^Link is at the bottom of the store page.  Each updated set will include a date (month/year) so players can keep track of what they've downloaded.

Lookin' for reviews...
In addition if anyone gets around the playing the game I'd love to see some reviews posted on the Gamecrafter site, either page (boxed or unboxed)...and if you've picked up the Blank Card expansion please comment on it etc.  I'm looking for genuine reviews not buttocks-aimed-sunshine.  :)  I'd just like to see some reviews on the Gamecrafter page for people who are looking at it.  I think the pages need a bit more traffic.

Any help would be appreciated.  I hope to have more PDF updates soon!  Also, if you've been running SnS send me some pics (post here or via email) and let me know if it shows up at conventions.  I like featuring peoples games on my blog as well.

I have had the cards etc for ages, but just have not had the time to read the rules and get playing with my group yet.
I have used some of the cards as random events in games and may well use them during the BLAM game.

Maybe a review of the cards without even playing the game may be useful anyway, as they can be used independently of the rules and may well generate a few sales for you....?

They are a quality product even without using the rules.

What do you think?

Hey guys,

After being emailed by a fellow in Romania I finally managed to get the PDF version of Shoot N' Skedaddle cards on Gamecrafter for a whoppin' $7.  This should help with foreign customers who are interested in the game but can't stomach the cost of shipping - and they no longer need to email me in order to get a copy!  Cost has also dropped $3.

As mentioned before Gamecrafter pages now carry the rule set as a free download.

Shoot N' Skedaddle: PDF Version
https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle:-pdf-version

^PDF version of the cards. (all 184 cards included optional printable backs for double-sided printing etc.)

NOTE: As mentioned on my blog and the page there, the PDF cards will require 27 pages of printing as there are 184 cards.  So if you plan on printing them on nice heavy duty paper etc., the cost will likely exceed the $25-30.  The PDF is intended to serve foreign customers, since international shipping is around $25 itself!  If you live in the states, buying the standard cards will likely still be a cheaper option.

However...if you want to buy the game and print the cards out on simple paper, by all means spend $7 and give it a whirl!  lol

Mr. Elbows:

I came to this discussion just lately, as I've been looking into all the various Old West rules sets as a prelude to jumping into the period.

Got the PDF of your rules, and like them a lot. I especially appreciate the dice roll system for tests: the idea of a constant to-hit number (5, in this case) with different dice to vary the probability is an elegant system, eliminating the need for cumbersome charts, while catering to my affection for games with lots of dice.

Considering your philosophy in developing this system: I notice that you do not use the d10. I am interested in what prompted your decision to skip it: including it would have made the probabilities more linear or arithmetic (6-8-10-12-20, or +2, +2, +2, then jumping to +8 changing the sequence), and omitting it as you have done makes them more exponential or geometric (6-8-12-20, or +2, +4, +8). Having dabbled in the past with writing rules, I am fascinated about decisions that game developers make. I would be interested in your thinking in this case. No criticism here, just curiosity.

Absolutely.  In fact I started with a D10 and had a D12 as the final step initially.  Like you I was doing the linear thing "+2, +2. +2. +2 etc.".

However, upon doing the math you'll see the issue here!  If we need a 5+ to successfully score, this results in the following:

D6: 33%
D8: 50%
D10: 60%
D12: 66%

So you have gaps of: 17%, 10%, and 6%...so the increase in skill actually gets you less and less of an advantage.

D6: 33%
D8: 50%
D12: 66%
D20: 80%

Using these dice your steps are now: 17%, 16%, and 14%.  This means that the advantage of gaining a dice is a good bit more linear.  Now, the original logic makes sense if you're simply using stepped dice for say, opposing rolls.  Ie. a character rolling a D6 vs. a character with a D8, etc.  However with a constant success number which doesn't deviate, I prefer the increased steps to be a bit more linear.

For instance if we used the old system, and had a character with a shooting skill of D12 and two sixguns.  You'd always be willing to drop to a D10 (penalty for shooting both guns at once) because you'd lose a mere 6%.  Whereas going from a D12 now down to a D8 you're dropping 16% per shot.  So in the end I just wanted to keep the gaps between levels more consistent.

PS: The "Last Chance" equates to roughly 11%, where an "Unstoppable" test is 94%! (however...since this is as good as it ever gets there is always a chance to fail a roll/action).

Hope that makes sense!

I guess this is just an isolated example but you'd get those percentages with perfectly linear steps by just using a D6 and different target values like we did in the 80s. lol

Yep.  The goal here is that the stats are all linked to colour-coded dice.  So it makes it a little easier than adjusting the rolls of a D6.  And, while silly it adds a little bit of excitement whenever the big bad D20 comes onto the table.  lol

Particularly at conventions "Okay, so you get to roll two red dice...".   lol

At the beginning of a game it's easy to say "okay, every single dice roll in the entire game, the goal is 5+".

Post by: Dolmot on July 03, 2014, 11:48:54 PM
For my convention game I made custom D6s, otherwise blank but there are 2, 3 or 4 sides with a 'hit' symbol (colour-coded according to the number). The only rule is that you pick a combination of colours and need 'hits'. Therefore the only difficulties appearing in single-die rolls are 33, 50 and 67%. Obviously there could be 17 and 83 too but I didn't bother for reasons.

Admittedly it does require making custom D6s from blanks. However, who knows if there was wider request for such dice. At some point it might make sense to order a real batch.

Hope that makes sense!

Absolutely! This is the difference between a casual observer (that would be me  ???), and someone delving deeply into a system, analyzing it inside out. So an---apparently---exponential sequence is needed to achieve a truly linear result. Excellent! I told you it was an elegant system....I just didn't know how much!  :D

it adds a little bit of excitement whenever the big bad D20 comes onto the table.  lol

Exactly right.  :o

Just remember it only makes sense if you're using a solid immovable goal number.  lol  All the math goes out the window if you need different target numbers, etc.

In fact if one is opposed to using different dice, you could easily "translate" the system over to D6's only.  It'd be quite simple.  Just require a little change of math and some of the percentages would change a bit.

PS: Dolmot, I'm a big D6 w/ icons whore.  I've ordered waaaaay too many dice sets that I've made for Blood on the Sands etc.  I may even be using that system for a dungeon crawl game I'll be doing eventually.  I love icons and icon combinations being used for skills and attributes.  That's a whole new method of math though.  For a tank game I was making (abandoned) I had similar icon dice, and again with an icon on 1 side, another icon on 2 sides, and a third icon on 3 sides etc.  The only issue there of course is the additional cost of dice - though I use the big blank D6s with sticker icons I can design/order.  Good stuff.

I'm a big D6 w/ icons whore.   The only issue there of course is the additional cost of dice - though I use the big blank D6s with sticker icons I can design/order.

There just was a successful Kickstarter by Custom Game Lab (here in the States) for custom design-yourself d6s. I bought 3 dozen, and have designed dice for the  British, French, and Indian for Muskets and Tomahawks (French and Indian War) using  an icon for the "1" and period fonts for the rest of the numbers. The Kickstarter ended May 12, so we haven't got our dice yet, but when I get my finished product I'll let you folks know. In the meantime, you might want to keep an eye on the company.

The cost for the dice was hefty---$1.39 apiece---but I too am a dice whore and it's well worth it to design your own dice. This company may be of interest to you game designers out there, as I'm sure prices will come down over time as they ramp up, and of course bulk orders will also probably lower unit prices. I've already designed new dice for Academy Games' 1812: excellent little board game  :), but (sorry Uwe!) their dice are ugly.  :(

Yeah I've gotten with Chessex who will do custom runs, but for around 50 dice with six sides the cost becomes around $2.50 a dice or more!   lol  I'd have to be super set on my dice before investing in something like that again.  I recently sold off about 30 sets of Chessex dice...I never met a set of dice I didn't like.  But reality hit me and I figured it was silly to have sooooo many dice.   lol

I still have plenty to spare...

I'm really intrigued by these rules. I downloaded the PDF yesterday and read through them several times. I really like what I am seeing. To the point that I am going to order the cards from Gamecrafters this afternoon. Kudos. It's quite nice to see some rules with originality.

Mister Droid,

Thanks!  Feel free to email me (address on Gamecrafter) or PM me here if you have any questions.  I also like posting up games on my blog so if you end up running any games in the future, take some pics.

Cheers!

PS: I'm actually working on some SnS stuff as we speak...
