Hi, All!
I finally began construction of my new gigantic walker: Lord Smudgington Smythely-Smythe's Hydraulically Motorvated Sextupedal Land-Traversing Vacational Domicile...
I have started with the 'Core Room' which will be viewed from above at the centre of the finished model.
The final model will be about a metre long, and will serve as the gaming table itself for deck-type skirmishes and what-not.

I'm hoping to finish the walker by August for 'Call to Arms' here in Wellington, NZ. A lot of work still to do!
Rivet Count so far: 562!

For those of us in the solo gamer wildlands of Whakatane when is Call to Arms this year?
-
I have started with the 'Core Room' which will be viewed from above at the centre of the finished model
And to think I wasted a burned-out drill core for a dog gate axle...
Anyway, a nice start to be sure but it's a huge project so good luck 8)
-
Looks very promising 8)
Looking forward to seeing it progress.
cheers
James

I do like the idea of making the walker into the gaming board. Our Scottish Lead Adventuring friends did the same with a huge airship. I had a project like this in the back of my mind for a huge aeronef or aethership, but I'll probably never get the time or space to do it.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this project works out.
-
Great start :)
-
Will the madness never end? :o
Actually, I've a plastic shelf unit I planned to make into a multi-level game table, with upper levels open in the center, balcony like. Idea was space ship interior, or buried facility for non-V SF, but nothing to stop one from cladding the legs as 'legs'.
Hmm....
Doug
-
I love you for using a drill core in this.
-
...
The final model will be about a metre long, and will serve as the gaming table itself for deck-type skirmishes and what-not.
...
Just started drawing up what I might do to ape your project, and realized there MUST be a fortuitously open trap door on the 'belly' for a Luke-Skywalker-and-the-AT-AT-esque entrance!
FWIW, you can stop now on the rivets and still have more than I'll be doing... ;)
Doug
-
That does it Colonel! Fuzzy, Mel and I are arranging a trip over to NZ. >:(
-
That does it Colonel! Fuzzy, Mel and I are arranging a trip over to NZ. >:(
Are you sure that's wise? I mean, I half jokingly suggested it on another thread, but can the islands stand that much awesomeness in one place. lol
Ah, baggage restrictions will probably sort that out...
Doug
-
This could be the thread to watch in 2013, a good start!

This could be the thread to watch in 2013, a good start!
Without a doubt.
Looking forward to see how it turns out. ;D

WOW! What a lot to respond to!
Stu - I don't know. I'm assuming it's August, as usual.
Froggy - Erm. Okay.
Everyone else - Thank you! I shall endeavour to keep you entertained and all that stuff. I just hope I have the model-making stamina to finish the thing!
More progress pics, etc. in a few days' time.
All the best!
-
Inspired madness.
-
That's HUGE! How many rivets do you have in your budget? :P
-
Always impressive! I look forward to following this thread.
-
That seems to be something special ... ;D
-
Looks great. Recycled old power drill?
I am looking forward to seeing how this project goes.
-
Thank you, gents.
As far as a rivet-budget goes; why limit oneself? I've just added a further 303, with many hundreds (or even thousands) still to go!
Madness? Maybe... but I'm such a happy wee chap...
-
Superb start,keep the updates coming!
-
Thanks, Paleskin - here you go!

"Well, I've been busy."
Have to call you on that; beyond mere modesty.
Really, I keep promising myself not to be stunned. Or, skeptical.
The lamp parts hardly seemed plausible, but the result is BRILLIANT!
And I'm just going on about a detail... :o
Oh, yes, the porthole vignette is priceless!
Doug
-
Thanks, James - I really like the way that porthole shot came out too.
Doug - your encouragement, as ever, is greatly appreciated! There are many months ahead of me on this project, I expect. I hope to keep surprising and entertaining you!

Here's the latest - made good progress on the engine...

Excellent work Sir! :-*
-
Amazing stuff
Who makes the mini?
-
Gentlemen, thank you.
I can't quite remember where the mini came from - I think Reaper Chronoscope or Blue Moon. Could be wrong. Backpack and gun ar a conversion - he used to hold a cigar.
Bezzo - I am honoured, Sir. And no BS here either. It's always great to receive your kind words of encouragement and your thoughts on my work. Please keep it up!
I don't do this for money, or to fit with anyone else's vision of VSF, or to suit a particular game system (although I have prefernces, obviously). In fact, I hardly play any games at all any more. I have realised that I used to play the games as justification for making the models - as if I shouldn't make anything if there wasn't a reason! Nowadays, it seems I make the models first and foremost and if I manage to get a game or two, that's a nice bonus!
I started my blog with the intention of showing terrain, not vehicles. It bothered me (and still does) that so many gamers spend many hours collecting and painting exquisitely detailed armies, then pay little or no attention to their tables. How many conventions have you been to where two beautifully arrayed forces are fighting to the death for control of a few green lumps of polystyrene, some cotton wool on a twig and and eggbox covered in sand? Through forums such as this one and TMP, we can all view some lovely work by some truly talented individuals but sadly, the bulk of what is being used out there in Wargamer World is poorly designed and presented.
The point of my blog and my main reason for showing my projects on here and TMP was (and very definitely still is) not to show off something others cannot have, but to illustrate how simple the techniques required to produce something really good are. I have said before and I'll say again;
"This Ain't Brain Surgery!"
The materials I use are easy to come by and I'm really not using any techniques others have not used before. Maybe I take my designs and ideas to extremes, but I maintain that the only essential difference between a great model, a nice model and a terrible lump is patience.
Have faith in what the end product can look like if you take your time and pay attention to detail. The more detail you are prepared to add, and the more accurate in scale you endeavour to be, the better the result. It's not magic and you don't have to be a genius.
Don't get me wrong - I love to be congratulated on good work. Who doesn't? But I get even more satisfaction from hearing that others have seen my work, read my comments, and in some measure I have helped them to improve their own designs.
Sorry - waffling a little! Where's me pills?
Thank you again.
Colonel O'Truth
-
I've thought about it, of course.
I'd be happy to take commissions, but only where the client supplies a concept sketch or idea to be interpreted by me. I wouldn't want to work to someone else's blueprint - this is my way of relaxing. It's essential to me that it remains creative and fun.
Any interested parties may email me at ordersforthecolonel@gmail.com

While I was 'sputtering' in my previous post, I did recall sparing a thought for the boiler-to-come. Something like 'oh, not much there to work with...'
As if I actually could doubt; rest of being shouted 'Wait for it!'
:-*
Doug
-
I'll try not to disappoint, Doug!
Just added chimneys and Pole-Differential Potentialising Galvanetic Capacitors. Why not?

It's staggering to think this engine is ALREADY big enough to be an utterly dominating table centrepiece all on it's own.

Wooooow, words are just not enough!

I likey that a lot 8) 8)

Thank you, gents!
Fram - keep watching. It's going to get a LOT bigger!
Suber - I agree. Words are not enough. Add rivets.
James - Thank you very much. I just checked out your blog. Lovely terrain! I salute you, Sir!

No! Not the dreaded VSF Gamer's Lung! :o
He'll never be able to work in the balsa mines again.

You don't mine balsa, you ladle it... lol
One does, I suppose, wonder when it'll grow too large to sleep in the house...

Hi folks!
Sorry it took a while to update all this gubbins - I've been busy.

An engine room should be dirty!
-
An engine room should be dirty!
Once underway, but this is at inspection. :D
Must say, one look at this, followed by imagining the beast lurching, and I went looking for images of ships' stokers. I mean, you can see, if the walker sways or twists, the bunker could disgorge coal, smashing the stoker against the furnace. Most of the images I'm finding have a small pile dumped right in front of the firebox, brought up with a wheel barrow.
Lawd, what a mess!
Doug
-
I still try to find out how this machinery would work. I donīt really care, it looks totally cool and thatīs enough for me, but as an actual steam engine it doesnīt look familiar...
-
Not to worry; too oft I've betrayed doubt, only to have it utterly smashed.
'How could you say there's a worry of lurching? See? The engine room is gyro-stabilized...' lol
Doug
-
Thanks for your faith, Doug!
As to whether there will be much lurching, maybe that might be relative to the number of legs I build? (The clue's in the name...)
I feel that a six-legged walker would be somewhat less unsteady than a four-legged one, although possibly slower.
So glad you're all enjoying this one so far. Wonder how many of you will stick around for the months and months yet to come...
-
Very nice! I don't mind the lack of dirt, I've seen boiler rooms in action.
-
Wonderful riveting rivet madness! :-*
Bit early to ask about further plans maybe but are there any? :)
-
Bezzo - faithful as ever! I'm honoured, Sir!
Joe Fish - more rivets to come soon!
Pocoloco - BIG further plans! This thing is going to be absolutely HUGE! I've barely started.
Read back through my blog a month or so and you'll see...

-
Utter madness! I don't whether to applaud you or call the Arkham Asylum? :D Quite a project and with the set time-frame, all the more frantic indeed.
-
You would put such capabilities at the hands of the residents of Arkham?
Now that IS madness!
And, no, it's not Sparta... lol
Faithful continue...
Doug
-
O Colonel my Colonel...
just keep it coming. Best scratchbuilt stuff ever.
I hope to have some kind of an offer for something we discussed previously by the summer. My gaming budget is kind of spoken for through then.
-
will be using your building instructions for my wild west town wwx style, very cool looking, hats of to you sir.
-
Thanks, Mr Evil. Very pleased that my tutorial is of some use to somebody!
Please feel free to ask any questions.

Jimbibbly - Thanks. I like 'em too!

Perhaps it lost something in the translation. You are from Kapiti after all :)

Pardon?!
I'm British, Brian! I thought the accent might give it away...

Bezzo - you never figured that out?! Who but a Northern Industrialist would attempt such a monstrosity? I'm a Sheffield lad - forged from steel and riveted together!
Mila - thank you. Many more rivets to follow... I'll be taking a look at your Pulp Alley rules, too - they look cool!
Aldfrik - sorry! No guns!!! This is a civilian land-cruising walker... Inconvenient villages are simply stepped upon.
More very soon!

Be careful, Bezzo - vaporous attacks are notoriously hard to repel!
I never thought about the cathedral-resemblance, but Victorian architects did like the Grand and the Glorious... So I suppose so.

Aldfrik - sorry! No guns!!! This is a civilian land-cruising walker... Inconvenient villages are simply stepped upon.
Yes, one does wonder about a followup military monstrosity. Dreadnought? Dread-ful!
Forget the table; one has to wonder if the floor can stand up...

:-*
I like the way you are building outwards.
Why restrict yourself with a hull, when you can build to yours hearts content and then add the 'skin' when you decide 'enough is enough'.
Clever!

This project gets better and better :)
Can you let us have more information on the lamps you used?
-
absolutely wonderful!!! must see more!
-
What a crazy-big undertaking, and such lovely execution! I look forward to seeing this monster grow further. :)
One question: what tool(s) are you using for the circle cutting?
-
You sir are an artist. :-*
What do you think the overall size of the model will be?
Any size constraints, or is it already too big to move it out of the house?
Blodwin
-
Again I pull my hat and bow to your skills, sir. Honestly that will deserve a space in some museum or hall of fame of scratchbuilding.
-
Thanks, all! It's this kind of encouraging feedback which keeps me going at times when the scale of this project seems overwhelming...
In answer to all your questions, this is actually fairly light so far, being made largely of foamcore. In fact, I just weighed the engine room and core room together and they came to exactly 2.5kg (5.5lbs). the bulk of the weight is in the metal components of the core, chain drive and battery pack. I expect, therefore, that the whole model should come in under 10kg (22lbs) - which may sound like a lot, but for such a large model, is not really that much.
The point is; I'll be able to lift it.
I haven't limited myself to building within an outer frame, as Mason quite correctly observes. However, I do have a fairly clear idea of what I'm aiming towards. I've just never been a big fan of colouring within the lines - I like things to evolve.
The overall size of the model should be around 1200mm x 600mm (4' x 2') and I plan to make a board on which it can stand - although I don't plan to permanently fix it in place. A glass or clear perspex cover is also on my list, as I don't fancy the idea of dusting this monstrosity!
The LEDs came from Evil Mad Science: http://evilmadscience.com/productsmenu/partsmenu/574 (http://evilmadscience.com/productsmenu/partsmenu/574) I highly recommend them. Really helpful and great value! (If you're reading this, Lenore, thanks tons!) I expect that the final model (at this stage) will incorporate around 180 LEDs. I've used 39 so far.
I am also now projecting 25,000 rivets. But only time will tell.
The holes are cut with hole-punches I bought from SuperCheap Auto - a full set of 12 sizes ranging from 1/8" to 3/4" (they didn't have metric!) was only about $17NZ. I'll be showing these in my next blog post. They are so much better than drills - they don't tear the plastic and you get to keep the middle bit!
I hope that covers everything.
Once again, thanks. I've started work on the dome-roof (added 385 rivets...) and will be doing a new blog post as soon as I can. I'm moving house this week, so please bear with me!
All the Best!

Bezzo -
Those rivets were from Liverpool, if I recall correctly. Mine are from Sheffield.
I rest my case.

Oops.
Mine are still from Sheffield!

Stunning work! This is a thing of beauty! :-*

Jeepers this is amazing. Nice work!

Again, awesome work. Nice to see a fellow kiwi here too :D
-
...sorry to disappoint, Old Chap... I am but a foreign interloper.
Thoroughly British, don'cha know? Just doing my best to rebuild the Empire from within...
-
Good to see a wannabe New Zealander then? Oh, I'm so confused. lol
-
Reminds me a bit of the folk who've lived twenty years in a state, picked up the accent, and are still a 'transplant'. That, or my mother's last husband whose name was Kurkowski, but he was German. Not sure...
Let me know if you start doing tā moko.
REALLY impressive work from a relatively simple technique! Of course, lovely in execution; one needs the eye to see how those curves will fall into place. Impressive piece of scenery on its own, and almost a throwaway detail. :o
*woof*
Doug
Edit: And, really, a move would leave me a fortnight resting my nerves. To actually accomplish repairs AND further work... ;)
-
That roof is already looking good.
When it is finished it is going to be the nuts!
:-* :-* :-*

Rivets
English
'nuff said 8)
Dunno; we had a fellow that did scratch 40K stomper, battlewagon, and others, using chopped bamboo swab sticks to cover same. That madness isn't JUST English. I'm a quarter-bred, and it hasn't hit me.
Must. Put. Down. Daub. Paint...
Doug

simply awesome, all my respect.
-
Whatever, I find this thread riveting.
-
I know Doug - it was meant light heartedly and very tongue wedged in cheek.
Just say the name Isambard and try NOT to think of rivets lol
Dear fellow, had hoped you understood I knew it perfectly. And, I must sincerely apologize if you thought otherwise.
It's obvious, even with strong British genes, I'm perfectly happy to let someone else apply the rivets... lol
Isambard... Nope, you are quite correct!
Doug

I think this is my favorite part so far 8)
It screams VSF to me.

Thanks again, folks.
Brian - the roof is removable.

Since this appears to be modular in construction, I think you could use the engine room as a "Crystal Palace" or "World's Fair"-type exhibition hall for the massive engine. Plop that down in the midst of Hyde or Regent's Park, let everyone else weep for shame, as they aren't British. :P

But surely they would be "weep[ing] with shame, as they aren't British" already? :D
Splendid work Colonel - more please!
-
Hmmm...
Speaking as an Englishman abroad, I long for the the days when foreign folks wandered the streets all day, crying and wailing in envy of the British Empire , far too stricken and downcast to be any kind of a threat to Her Majesty. Must have been a pitiful sight...
Perhaps we should have built more greenhouses?
-
The real terror will come when he reveals that this is all actually life size.
And that the engine works.
-
And that the engine works.
I still havenīt understood the engineering of it. Steam engines look different. Actually I donīt see one apart from the boiler (if thatīs what it is). However it looks totally cool and perhaps I am just too ignorant to gain the insight that VSF has nothing to do with physics we are used to. I really like this project more and more!
-
I am not sure if it couldn't represent a steam turbine of sorts
-
I am not sure if it couldn't represent a steam turbine of sorts
No, thatīs my business. Not one that is not constructed in a way that is related to actual physics...
But steampunk is a totally different thing of course. Who knows what they know!?
-
Personally, I only build 'em - I have no idea what makes 'em work!
The way I see it, realism tends to restrict one's drive to keep adding more cool stuff. Who knows - by the time this thing is finished (and I am perhaps a quarter of the way there) we'll all be able to see what it's doing...
I suppose I should care more, but I'm having too much fun.
-
The way I see it, realism tends to restrict one's drive to keep adding more cool stuff.
Keep it that way. I often wish I could still have the perspective I had when I was a child. So many miracles have been lost since...

I'm thinking it could pass for a dynamo. We started seeing steam powered dynamos being added to ships in the 1880's for electric lighting.
It looks awesome! :-* :-*

Brilliant :o

It makes tea, obviously ::)

Whoah! Brilliant stuff, there, Colonel - mad, of course, but brilliant :-*
-
I've been looking forward to the latest instalment. Top stuff as ever!
-
Still awesome stuff coming out of here... :o
-
Excellent! It's always great to see your work.
-
Bezzo - since you ask:
There will be six legs. Hence the name - Lord Smudgington Smythely-Smythe's Hydraulically Motorvated Sextupedal Land-Traversing Vacational Domicile...
The whole vehicle comprises three distinct parts - Engine Room (at the rear); Mansion (centre); and Bridge (front).
There are still some general concepts I am playing with, but I will beresolving them soon, as the Engine Room is almost finished and I want to start work on the Mansion. The Bridge is a bit Top Secret right now - sorry! Don't want to spoil any future surprises!
The whole model when finished will be approximately 1200mm (48") long and 600mm (24") wide at its widest point (the Mansion Deck).
As I have now passed 10,000 hand-glued rivets without finishing even a third of the model, it is anybody's guess how many I will end up at.
I do not expect to finish this project within the next year. Please be patient!
Everybody's kind words of encouragement are keeping me going on this. I really appreciate it!
More soon...
All the Best!

We have used the term insane in the past. Obviously, we don't know the meaning of the word. We are schooled.
Merest crumb of info on occasion must suffice.

And I thought a big false moustache would have everyone fooled...

Except that in a football crowd I would be the only one wearing a suit...

OK - here's more!

Thanks for sticking with me on this - there's probably still a year to go!

Yet more stunning examples of your work.
:-*
Those pictures are truly stunning and that boiler just seems to grow and grow.
It looks wonderful as it is, but I just know that you wont be able to resist tinkering some more... ;)

"Tinkering some more" Mason?
To say the least!
So far, I have not yet completed the rear one-third of the vessel...
-
James - thank you.
I'd love to finish this before I have grandchildren...
-
I suppose the best compliment is how much I'd like a tour of the engine compartment.
I really wonder where I can pick up tickets.
I wish I had something so neat to share with the grandchildren I DO have. ;)

Brill. Most impressed sir!

Thanks very much, Mr Dragon!

God, it's beautiful. Just the engine room alone is worthy of an entire game.

Hmmm... Hope the nurses are cute...
You can have the nurse roll dice for you. Or... build a robot arm for the giant walker and make it roll dice! ;D
-
Yes. That's exactly what I should do, as this thing isn't complicated enough...
-
On a side note - I had a dream about this walker last night!
-
Umm...
Should I be flattered, or move into the Witless Protection Act?
And: does this mean you know what the final thing will look like? Because I'm still guessing!
And: did you count the rivets?
-
I know it was present as I remember looking at the engine room quite clearly*, but it was kind of a nightmare as I had turned up to a game without dice, tape measure and miniatures(!)**.
* It was beautiful.
** But this is exactly what I'm doing at tomorrow's club meet... intentionally. ::)
-
That is quite simply the most breath-taking Hymosex Latvadom I have seen this season, sir. I fear I must collapse upon the chez longue forthwith, lest I be overcome by an attack of the vapours. Miguel! Fetch my temple rub this instant!
-
Cubs, none of this has anything to do with Latvian strippers! Tell Miguel you bring you a fresh monocle - your phrase book must be out of focus!
-
Filth and smut, I've never heard the like.
I shall have to oil myself up and go a few wrestling bouts on the lawn with Miguel and his brothers to release my tensions.
-
I love this thread. lol
-
Sorry to say that following Cubs' example, I have now ruined my lawn with the oily footprints of muscular Latin Americans.
I should get back to rivets...
-
You know what people say about going off topic?
But I expect you need a break from all those rivets.
Are you sure you'll have a wide enough lens to fit in the finished model? Or are you going to paste together several pictures?
It's Very Nice!
-
Concerns about the piccies?
We're all still wondering if the floor underneath the table is shored up sufficiently!

Awesome. I was going to ask for a mini in a pic for scale, but I managed to spot that tiny dot on the screen.

Aeroneff?! You must be joking!

OK - here's a bit more.

Fram - the simple answer is that I am not. The stairwell is purely for show. I don't intend to let it be 'used' by miniatures.
-
I dunno. You could get one of those 'stair walking penguin' toys, substitute weighted figs... lol
Doug

Doug, the brilliance and resounding practicality of your suggestions never fail to amaze me.

Doug, the brilliance and resounding practicality of your suggestions never fail to amaze me.
No, really. I DO recognize sarcasm when I hear it... lol
So far, the amazing goes all one way, you know. ;)

Dare I ask how our friend the Colonel has been doing?
He's not been active here since 13th March.
-
Sorry, gentlemen!
I am alive, although I have not been very active. I apologise.
I have been indulging other creative interests, which have been taking up a lot of my time and energy.
However, I can assure you that I fully intend to continue work on the giant walker and other projects.
Thank you for your concern.
All the best!
-
Phew! Good news. 8)
Ditto. I was afraid he'd taken umbrage at my lack of pestering. I can never get it properly fine-tuned.
Doug
-
Good to know all's well. :)
-
Did you ever come back to this?
Inquiring minds...
(apologies to those who thought there might have been an update)
-
The Colonel hasn't been active on the forum since May 2014, so I imagine the answer is no. :'(
-
I figured as much, since the last entry of any sort on his blog matched the last update here.
Even if he abandoned this, I would have loved to see more of his little projects. Those dinosaur-towed death rays and such.
-
And I sent a note, just yesterday, to let him know, even if he never returns, he's still remembered warmly.
Doug
-
Hello gentlemen (and ladies, I assume)
Thanks so much for the various enquiries, notes and messages of concern at my silence!
I am still very much alive and well, surrounded by unfinished and somewhat dusty projects.
It seems that time has raced by while I have been very busy elsewhere, indulging in music and performance.
I have every intention of continuing the giant walker and other creations, and I have done a small amount of work in the last year, including a few commission bits and bobs, but I can make no promises at this stage. That said, there will be periods in the next few months where the band will not be recording/writing/rehearsing/performing quite so much, so I hope to avail myself of those opportunities and don the Colonel's pipe and moustache once more...
I do miss you fellows!
Please bear with me. Nice to know I am not forgotten!
-
That's good news! Glad to hear all is well. :D
-
Hurray!
-
Oh smashing news! Every so often as I scanned the latest posts I wondered about you and your large construction. Glad to hear life is full and rewarding, I wish you well with your music opportunities.
Doug, well done mate, that's a good effort sending a note. What a place this community is. :)
Regards
Matt.

I'm glad, I've finially caught up with this topic!
I've been toying with a Mortal Engines style project for quite some time. Now I've found your's I don't have to kill myself building one.(I can just live the dream through your's.Time saved job done.)

Thanks gents! It's truly heart warming to be welcomed back with such enthusiasm!
I've just built a giant gearbox and the rivet count has passed 11,000 - watch this space...

simply stunning work

Great to have you back! :) That walker is a thing of beauty, I missed seeing it develop.

How riveting to seeing progress again on this marvelous build!

Boom boom.
-
Huzzah! He's back!

This will simply be one of the most beautiful of human contrivances. Still drooling.
-
That many rivets you deserve a coffee. I will shout you one week after next when I am in town again.
-
Hi Brian! Coffee is always welcome!
Thanks all you chaps for your comments - here's more...
I've added a gable arch and gearbox. Rivet count is at 11,317!

Delighted, old boy, but, alas, I've read her write of her passions for another, words that rang too true, and shall simply walk away and pine.

I should have no fear, for I possess a Faraday Vest purchased from Messers Cartmell & Murton, proprietors extraordinaire!

As said on Firesign Theatre, 'it's been such a long exposition', but have you started anything on the fore section?

Thanks gents!
I have no intention of shuffling off this mortal (Tesla) coil just yet.

The only thing I have to say is WOW!

Will the forecastle/cottage/bridge be on a derrick/turret arrangement, so the Great Beast can turn its head?
It goes without saying that this is one of the greatest step-by-step build threads in the history of LAF. Thanks for sharing your madness, sir!
-
I really haven't thought as far as the head in detail, my friend! But I promise it will be impressive.
And, thank you. I hope we don't all get bored before I finish this monstrosity!

My question referred to the sketch; are you planning on carrying the Crystal Palace motif forward? As I've said before, skepticism has been killed too oft in the past to push the issue. ::)
Well, that's all right then!
Right, like there was actually a question... lol
Doug
-
Hi Doug.
Yes. Both the mansion section and the bridge will have glass barrel-vault roofs.
Given that the engine room's roof has over a thousand rivets and is significantly smaller than the mansion will be, I'm preparing myself.
I have some other very ambitious ideas regarding these elements, but I don't want to publish them yet, because things may change as the machine develops.
I expect to start the msnsion soon, and the bridge in maybe a year!
-
Absolutely splendid to see you carrying on with this monster project 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James

Lovely side galleries. Now the scale of the thing is really beginning to take shape.

Yes. And I haven't seen my dining table for a while.
-
I hate to throw a spanner in the works! Seeing your sketch, would the whole thing not be better on tracks? You might have to change your thread name mind you! It could be 'the biggest ever landship' or 'the biggest ever tank'?
Its going to look amazing either way mind you! :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Huge wheels might be more fitting?
cheers
James
-
Frankly, tracks or wheels would be far too easy. Where's your sense of adventure, chaps? I've spent a lot of brain ache contemplating how on earth I'm going to do the legs...
And I like walkers.
Nice try though!

Yes, bonkers all the way - but the right kind of bonkers! ;D Superb as always, Colonel! :)
-
Thanks chaps! Always nice to be appreciated for the marbles one has misplaced - I'll try not to let you down!
I admit, this has become an obsession - I hate to say I'm going to do something and then not do it. And once I have an idea, it won't leave me alone until it is done.
Interestingly, Bezzo, along with the Crystal Palace, a number of Victorian piers were a part of the early inspiration for this project. I also looked at the iron work at St. Pancras station, along with Leeds, York, and other Victorian stations built under cover. (Unfortunately, the station at my home town of Sheffield is not so grand - we produced all the iron and steel, but every other bugger benefitted!)
The development of iron work engineering by men like IKB and Paxton allowed for massive single-span roofs which give those places a cathedral-like quality which I always found awe-inspiring as a boy. I remember them fondly.
The original idea for this massive rivet-festooned project was that I was going to build a Victorian moon base, set upon legs like those at Brighton pier, and with barrel-vault roofs along all the passageways and bio-domes. Somehow, my sketches inspired me to turn the whole thing into a vehice instead.
I may still do the moon base one day, when I have a few hundred thousand rivets and five years to spare.
On the other hand, if anyone else feels like having a go, you'd better get started...
-
It's a thing of beauty, Bezzo!
Great minds and all that...
Sadly, my new (and much beloved) home of Wellington, NZ, does not boast such grand Victorian Architecture, but we do have a rather lovely railway station.
It was opened in 1939, and was the largest building in NZ at the time (it seems quite small now) and you can see it owes a lot of its design to the Victorians. I rather like it.
The arches and glazed roof are in evidence, but none of the ornate iron-work: the more austere 1930s minimalist style has taken over. Nevertheless, it has that lovely echoey quality that railway stations ought to have.
-
Another delightful update.
Have you thought where this beauty will be placed when finished? Because it's not something to be kept out of sight in a storage box.
-
Another deliteful update.
Have you thought where this beauty will be placed when finished? Because it's not something to be kept out of sight in a storage box.
I have no idea! Currently, my Wild West town, 'Leadwood' resides in its boxes. I think I've taken it out twice in the last year... I've even thought about selling it to someone who'll get some use out of it.
Think I'll finish this thing first and then worry about why on earth I did it!
-
The good Colonel will no doubt construct a Victorian style glass cabinet for it. And an extra wing to his house in order to accomodate for the said cabinet o_o
-
As a matter of fact, I am considering a Victorian style glass cabinet... Might be expensive though!
Maybe I'll just sell it when it's done. Shall we say $1 per rivet, chaps?
-
You realise this legendary item may well live long in well deserved fame after we're all dust?

You realise this legendary item may well live long in well deserved fame after we're all dust?
I'm flattered that you think so - and you're assuming I'll ever actually finish it!
It's a nice thought.

SSSSHHHHHHHHHH - there's trams in Auckland!
-
von Lucky would you have asked Michaelangleo
"Mikey when you have finished 'David' where are you going to keep him?" lol lol
Just as long as he doesn't quote Rex Harrison's Pope Julius II in The Agony and The Ecstacy!
"When will you make an end?"
No rush, REALLY!
You'll just have to say 'when I am finished!'
;)

Are there?! I wouldn't know. I'm in Wellington.

Okay, you're safe:

Sell it to the city, after all you've given them another national treasure!!
Wouldn't that be grand? little kiddies going for rides, screaming with excitement as they go up and down town. Tourists flocking to see the amazing Lord Smudgington Smythely-Smythe's Hydraulically Motorvated Sextupedal Land-Traversing Vacational Domicile, at its home in Wellington. You'll take all Sydney's tourists! Then we shall have to claim your Australian anyway ;)
:D
Matt.
-
What a horrifying thought!
I'm British, Sir!
-
Donating it to some sort of museum thingy might be the best option for such a big artwork. Places like that take on large ship and architectural miniatures, why not the Lord Smudgington Smythely-Smythe's Hydraulically Motorvated Sextupedal Land-Traversing Vacational Domicile.
Or else you could sell it as prop to the nearest steampunk bar.
-
I'm British, Sir!
So were we. ;)
-
Okie Dokie... I finally finished the rear balconies and wall of the engine room!
Yay for me!

Hi all, if you clicked hoping for an update to the thread, apologies.
No update to this thread since 5 May 2015 and the blog 20 June 2015.
Does anyone know what happened to Colonel O Truth (his last visit to LAF was 11 July 2015)?
It's a shame, I really hope this gets finished one day - such an inspiration.
-
Well I hve been waiting to see how this would develop! In some dark days I thought I might never see it grow!
But it was well worth the wait!
Yay for me!
Damn straight
-
Colonel has posted a few other times more recently, though not this thread, obviously.
I assume Real Life[tm] continues its issues, but we all agree even what was done was gobsmakin'!
Best wishes, wherever you are!

Sorry for the long absence.

No need for any apologies.
I think we are all just glad to see you back again, Sir.

Lovely bit as usual, Colonel, but I'd have suggested a couple of plastic glasses (admittedly can take a bit to find kind that DON'T taper in at the top) and card cylinders as easier work.
However, main point is, I suggest, you DO! :-*
How often do I need to contact you that you'll know 'not forgotten?' ;)
Doug

Thanks Doug! Always nice to hear from you.
I have more in the works right now, so I'm not planning on disappearing again... yet...
