Title: Modern British Army Vehicals- What colour?
Post by: Rob_bresnen on January 02, 2013, 01:41:58 AM
I cant to paint some Land rovers for my British Army FOF force. The theatre of battle is in a west African country similar to Sierra Leone. I am guessing British Army vehicals in that part of Africa would be green- but what colour would be the most suitable to use (Vallajo, GW etc)

The vehicles used by the British in Western Africa (Sierra Leone) around the time of Operation Barras were indeed the standard green colour, as they were deployed rather hastily from the UK when the situation there deteriorated:

But since the green colour has quite a range of tone under differing lighting conditions, I suppose you could take some liberty in the colour green.

I think VMC 70850 (Medium Olive Matt) or VMC 70866 (Grey Green Matt) for instance could both work...

It will depend on how much notice your troops had.  Very short notice and the vehicles would probably be black and green camouflage or plain green overall.  The actual shade of both depends on when and where it was painted, how much thinner was used, brush or spray paint etc.  Camouflage was done by the unit.

Given a bit more time a scheme like this one in Kenya might be used.

In Africa colours fade.  Dust distorts the colours.  Sand and vegetation rub the paint.  So you really have a wide choice of colours!
