First up a Happy New Year to all my friends here on LAF...
It has been a couple of weeks since I frequented the site in earnest and with Xmas now behind us I thought I would share the limited progress made on Pirate Island.
Things are starting to come together and a full round up plus lots of photos can be seen on the blog.

Very imposing 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
It's looking great. I can't wait to see it develop further. ;D
-
Really like the fort - those card bricks must have been murder though.
-
That is a great piece of terrain, nice to see it full glory after having followed its construction progress.
Can't wait to see how you tackle ther rest of the town.
-
Cheers guys...started on pirate town this afternoon... :)
-
Sneak Picture of Pirate town - started on Sunday night
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/DSC_1077.jpg)
Planning on doing adobe style buildings so they can have multiple uses
Eric

You can't go wrong with adobe 8)

James

cheers
James
I second that. :D
-
No messing about by that man!
You have certainly got this well under way, Eric.
Nice work.
:-*
-
I've considered buying some Adobe structures - then building temporary (removable) Spanish tile roofs for use with them. I have several sizes of Spanish tile plasticard already.
-
Wow, that was quick! Going to be a nice looking town.
-
Just ordered a few large plastic windows from a railway model company - doors I can manage but putting windows on 10+ buildings will be too much hard work.
Eric

Eric
Nah, where's the fun in that? Do it the old fashioned way. I did and it has taken me about 5 years to build my adobe town and its still not finished. ;) lol
-
Dont have five years...want to finish this in the next two months lol
Eric
-
Looking really good.
And this may be of interest to all. Since I have a few more than ten buildings - closer to 100 - to provide windows and doors for as part of my wild west project, I have been experimenting with using adhesive packed paper and a draw program to create "peel and stick" windows and doors. I'm thinking to add 3D framing to some of them (all?) but allow the paper images to provide the "detail." The big challenge is permanence of the adhesives. I'll check and see if I have some photos and, if I do, post them over at my blog:
http://steeplechasingzebras.blogspot.com/
If - when - found, they'll be posted under the buildings tab. There are some photos of the wild west buildings in a very raw state under the wild west tab.
But, again, Eric, very nice work. Don't know if I could do the card bit, though. It would be in 15 mm and I think that would drive me crazy.
-
Fifteens away - nice blog...
good idea about printing but I am looking for something 'raised'. Once the windows I have ordered turn up Ill let folks know how I have got on..
cheers
Eric

-
very nice building!
In my opinion, the grass and the other green parts are not at the level of the rest of the structure, though. You might experiment a little on those before the rest of the buildings!
-
Think you are right..back to the drawing board on foliage
eric
-
Feck sake Giles, you really don't do anything by half!! Looking good!! :o
That just about sums it up perfectly!
Great stuff, Giles!
:-*

A giant rodent! Run you fools! lol
I find your work really impressive, it will look gorgeous when finished. :)

I'll get my cloak.
You've got it wrong Bezzo, he's going for a thatched roof!! That's a before shot, later the hamster will be given a coat glue! ;)
-

Naughty, Mr M!
lol
Dont let James know that you wrote that, he gets a little sentimental about using fur whilst building.... ;)

If he wants to be a wargame hero he needs armour. Today I bought some hamster armour (yes - it truly exists) and I think Basil should wear it.
lol lol lol
You NUTTER!
Stark, raving mad, I say.

-
Dont let James know that you wrote that, he gets a little sentimental about using fur whilst building.... ;)
Only a little ;D

James
-
Thanks for kind offer with the battle armour but I can't get mrs shed to sanction the idea...basil is very old and quite arthritic, sending him into fake battle might literally kill him.

Your productivity is amazing.
You put most of us to shame.
Indeed, I can only dream to produce at such a pace and to such a quality. I think I would need to have a shed first though :D
Missus wouldn't be pleased to notice that I have taken up the whole work room for my projects :D
-
Excellent stuff Eric!
-
Looking great :)
-
Wonderful! Beautiful! Lots of nice '-ful' words!
-
thak you for the praise - it makes it all worthwhile :)

Giles, is it? Well, then, Giles, I just went to your blog and read your Setting Scenarios post. It is possible, however unlikely, we may be long lost brothers. That is so in synchronicity with my own thinking on how to design a game, though mine tend to have quite a few figures in them. Still, the essentials of scenario design remain the same despite the size of what's on the board. Certainly, there will be some adjustments but, all-in-all, it is, at least for me, just as you say. Though I always try to inject a dose of humor as well. And I love the extra 'bits and bobs', or what I sometimes call the 'atmospherics' of the game. Nothing wrong with a straight game, but I like to add those bits, a little more spice into it to enhance the flavor. Good show, sir. And, as always, excellent modeling.

Hi Fifteens away – yes the real name is Giles
Thank you for your positive comments with regards to the latest posting on my blog. It is appreciated.
For those of you eagerly waiting the next instalment on Pirate Island I am so sorry that things have begun to drag.
The chief culprit has been the weather, with temperatures barely rising above freezing the shed is no place to build terrain. I have now finished all of the Pirates (some 100+ figures) and of course the Pirate Ship.
Taking advantage of Ainsty Castings March deal I have also invested in a couple more boats so hopefully they will arrive soon. If you haven’t seen this 20% offer head over to the site now you still have a few days left. 20% off a £75 Warship certainly makes it an attractive deal – I bought the small boat and the merchantman for under £100 including postage.
In addition to the weather both work and family commitments seem to have stepped up a gear so again less time for major construction.
-
lol lol lol lol lol
Promise some progress will happen soon....
-

Bloody hell!
You certainly dont take any prisoners, do you, mate?

-
but my standard of painting is somewhat less than most of the quality here on the forum...I prefer short bursts of extreme activity and wonst stop til the job is done (even if half baked)
Shed Equation = speed and quantity are more important than quality ;D
No painting tonight but I have started to build the papisse box
-
I've been tempted by the Ainsty graveyard for some time. Your rather splendid work on it makes it even more enticing!

More to come very soon :D

Hi Nick

Hi Folks
There have been a few questions with regards to the rules I have been using for the ships.
Prior to answering this question it probably makes sense to clarify what I have done with the M&T rules to configure them for my games...
In terms of units I have treated Pirates as irregulars – with four separate actions per turn.
They have an aggression of 3+, defence of 4+ and shooting 5+. Pirates will be armed with pistols and hth weapons unless designated as musket armed troops.
All the other units are fundamentally the same.
I have tweaked the morale rules – figures are less likely to flee in the first round unless the unit is decimated.
To speed things up a six always hits and one always misses. Saves are on a 5+ unless in hard cover in which case this is reduced to 4+
Leaders now duel – a challenge is issued at a range of 12 inches – the duel must be accepted. The duel is card based with the player with initiative choosing an attack card versus the other players defence card. There is some skill in this as each attack delivers x points of damage and can only be defended by a certain number of cards.
The Ships
Ships are classified into three categories for speed – fast, medium slow. They move at the beginning of each card deck (ie no card) – at present the speeds are 8, 10 and 12 inches. Speed can be reduced/increased by 25% each turn and a ship may turn up to 45 degrees.
This does mean that these boats are ponderous but it does prevent them from scooting across the board.
Ship/fortress guns cannot target figures they must either target other ships, buildings or terrain features. Guns are classified into light, medium and heavy. All have the same to hit rolls governed by distance, target size, and skill of gunners. Land based guns are more accurate.
Cannons inflict structural damage as per M&T. A location roll is made to see if hull or mast/sails/rigging is hit. Not surprisingly hull hits knock out guns and steadily wear down ship. Mast shots affect speed. Gunners may target either with penalties to hit.
These are very much work in progress.

Thanks, Giles.
Much appreciated.
Gonna need some palm trees myself soon.
