Title: John Carpenter's Vampires
Post by: Malamute on October 26, 2006, 02:59:53 PM
This film is on terrestrial TV tonight in the UK if anybody is interested. I will be setting my VCR to record it!

I know its not one of the best Horror films out there, but its still a bit of fun :)

I don't know the exact term in english but, that's the movie that start with a "Vatican Hit Squad" (something like that) killing some bloodsuckers in the desert, isn't it?

I believe you're right about the opening. I actually went and saw this in the theater and a friend and I had a good laugh. There are some moments that might translate well to gaming scenarios.

Yes it is the same film. There are some very gameable aspects to it. Especially the first encounter when the hit squad is searching the deserted house.
Also the fight in the motel when the Vampire lord comes calling! :)

In my opinion the film lost its way after that!

Its not really one of the best movies ever made   but i like it a lot because of the Horror / Action / modern western mix. The story has some nice ideas for game scenarios. I really like the idea of some soldiers of fortune hunting vampires for the Vatikan.

And its by John Carpenter. Funny, all newer John Carpenter movies are western stories in an modern setting. Take a look at "Ghost of Mars" and ignore the SF elements. Its a Western (and not a very good one).

But never never never make the mistake and watch part 2 - "Vampire - Los Muertos" This is pure trash (not the good kind of trash) starring John Bon Jovi. I had the strange wish to ripe my own eyes out my skull while watching it.

Oh come on Guys both films aren´t so bad ,they are that kind of films you can watch on a Sunday afternoon , working on your new wargaiming project´s.

but I agree with Malamute,  the film lost its way,but its still a bit of fun.

I have see ´´Hostel`` that was a bad film the first half was more a boring porno than a Horror films and the second  half was a  string together of    brutal scenes .
There were no thrilling and you allways know what will be next .

what kind of horror Filmes do you like ?

Vampire$ by John Steakly (the $ is intentional) was better than the movie. IIRC, the movie drifted apart from the plot in the book after the motel scene.

The first scene (at the deserted house) also differed substantially (with the Vampire Hunters in the book being much smarter). The book is pretty easy read ... if you even sorta liked the movie I'd recommend it.

I've always thought if they'd just stuck to the plot in the book, it' would've been a great movie (as opposed to the so-so one that it is).

Harpooning vamps and dragging them out by jeep winch into the sunlight
Plus the catch phrase "Crispy critters!"
It's awful I know, but what's not to like :D lol :D

The winching of the vamps to the sun is now a staple of several computer games and other films... That miniatures board game Vampire Hunters (by Dark Gate Games) also has a winch with remote control to be used by the hunters.

But for me the best thing in that movie was Sheryl Lee as Katrina!  ;)

I like both it and ghosts of mars. Much better than torture porn horror like hostel or human centipede.

Yep, even Carpenter's poorer, later movies have a trashy innocence (while still being entertaining gory) that has been lost with modern horror.
