I'm working on a No Limits army based loosely on the Reavers from Firefly.
Here are the ones I am currently working on:
The heads are Pig Iron, the arms are GW catachan IG, and a few lizard man arms as well as weapons. Bodies are GW Chaos.
Here are some earlier ones that I did. They are GW plastic Goliath's, with chaos heads for the most part.

Wonderful painting! :)
-
Thank you Hupp n at em. I appreciate your kind words.
Inspired by Tael's Hulk Hounds http://www.the-scythes.com/PROJECTS/HOUNDS/hounds.html (http://www.the-scythes.com/PROJECTS/HOUNDS/hounds.html), I created some space scavengers.
They are broken down into two groups, Spotters who look for good salvage to grab and to spot potential dangers and Cutters, who do the cutting out or removing the salvage. Here are some spotters.
Some cutters
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VC3d4QlMGtA/TmbQAXXCdoI/AAAAAAAACoM/4gHiB3ItESQ/s800/Hulk%2520Hounds%2520WIP%25202%2520%252810%2529.JPG)
A cutter with a "Long Knife" and one with a plasma cutter.
These were made from some plastic Necromundia and some Imperial Guard arms as well as some bits and bobs I had laying around.

Still working on painting the reavers in the first post. Since I only get to paint on the weekend (and I'm not the fastest painter) it's taking some time.
Here is a shot of some of the painted Hulk Hounds
As you can see I changed their bases. Skin tones give me fits...

I tried to paint the cutting guards a warning yellow/orange. I probably should have added warning stripes.
I like best how the knee pads turned out. I need to read up on some more tutorials on working with Green stuff. Some of the GS areas aren't as smooth as I would have liked.
Well this crew is ready to go salvage something.
-
Some interesting conversions there.
-
I agree! Nice stuff :)
-
Hi all,
Here is a WIP shot of the guys from the first post. The main colors have been blocked in and I just finished the washes/
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-A9PGDKerQa0/UQ1RADhGU_I/AAAAAAAADMk/lDQ5BxVUzpE/s640/reavers%2520WIP%25201.JPG)
I love them Pig Iron Heads :)
-
Lovely conversions great PJs. Also just dawned on me that those pig iron kolony rebel heads have great potential for a not Bane from the dark night rises.
-
Also just wanted to say kudos on the kroot shoulder pad as the helmet visor.
-
Great conversion work and painting. :-* Very inspiring. Keep up the good work.
-
Still working on my reavers... I admit, I am a slow painter...
Meanwhile here are some Space Rangers that I got many, many years ago via a trade. I think, but I am not sure, this was before EM4 got them. As you can see they are a bubble gum colored plastic.
Here are some of the painted.

Some squad leaders with some minor conversions. A head swap and a weapon swap.
And a close up

-
A good job on some otherwise uninspiring plastics!
-
I'm as done as I'm going to get with my reavers. I could add a few more layers but, I think I'm going to stop here. They are good enough for play.
Sorry for the poor quality of the photos. I have a new camera and I'm not quite sure what the problem is.

I remember having the Space Rangers boxed game stocked at one time in the games shop I managed in the early to mid 90's.
I think they were actually quite popular as alternative imperial 'stellar' ( ;)) marines.
-
Here is a the Reavers invading a science outpost... poor scientists... :(

very nice love the conversion work

Here is my next project. Still along the lines of salvage crew types.
I found these guys in a bit box
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Ffgc_ewwbx4/USJOU-s6YCI/AAAAAAAADOU/oQqsNXyhNLo/s640/new%2520guys%2520%25282%2529.JPG)
Here they are after they encountered the pliers of DOOM

I have some serious cutting, chopping, gluing and a wee bit of Green Stuffing to do yet.
-
Seriously nice stuff man, i love the guys with the visors they have an old school look! also the space rangers are fantastic!
-
Interesting. I just started some not-Blood Angels made from those space ranger models. I already bulked out my space wolves with them. Yours look fantastic.
-
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement! It makes me want to work even harder!
Perhaps some of you can help me with a question I have with the space rangers. The ones I purchased long ago are made of the stuff that model glue works on and are a pinkish bubblegum color. Some new ones I purchased from EM4 are a silver type plastic. I've read in some forums that model glue doesn't work on them. Is this true? What has your experience been? Is super glue the best alternative?
Thanks in advance.
-
i think super glue is the way to go with the space rangers, the warzone plastics are the same
-

I have a bunch of the silver ones. I use standard cyanoacrylate super glue for them. It works great; but I use CA for all my models.

The reassembly has begun!
Obligatory group shot.

One of the vets lost a leg and had it replaced with bionic / robotic one.
The premise behind these guys is that they find a derelict space craft and these guys go in first with their armored space suits and make sure there are no evil life forms waiting to eat the salvage crew that will come in after these guys make their sweep. Most of the guys will carry shot guns to discourage any left over life forms from eating the salvage crew.
The guys I'm modeling are a tough crew, but they are a (mostly) legitimate operation. If they find a live crew member from the ship that they are salvaging, they loose their salvage rights but most Mega Corps and Insurance companies will pay big bucks to have a ship and crew returned. Not to mention the boss of the salvage team likes seeing his name in the press...

Here is the latest WIP shot of the salvage crew.
I have enough torsos to make about 4 more, but I only have enough cadian arms to maybe make one, possibly two more. The shotguns are Marine Scouts. The Flamer on the Far Left is an old flamer with the nozzle of a new one I found in a bits box. I was pleased with the way it turned out. I'll have a cable go from the bottom to the backpack to power it.
The drone is one bough from some strange blue/grey aliens. They have modified it by adding a new sensor suite, some heavy fire power and some more light to light up those dark abandoned space ships.
The twin bolters are a bit bulky looking, and I'm not quite satisfied with the way it looks. I might stick two pulse carbines together and mount them on that one side.
Any thoughts?

I've added the back packs to the salvage team and I moved them to some Fenris Bases I forgot I had.

I haven't had a lot of time to work on the salvage crew. Work has been keeping me pretty busy.
Here is a quick tutorial on some quick and easy rubble piles that I made before my move to Europe.
I took some old sprue and chopped it up along with some other bits and bobs I had laying around. I mixed it together with some spackling compound, a bit of white glue and some fine sand. I took the mixture and stuck it on an old gift card.
It looked like this after sticking it on the gift cards.
Painted it all back
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Z6UKPpE52Bo/R9CSxwTaGDI/AAAAAAAAAgk/G9Tm_yuHU7o/s640/Rubble%2520WIP%25202.JPG)
Dry brushed it grey and painted the few metal parts. Added some flock and tall grass and called it done.
Thanks for looking. C&C always welcome.

The weapon swap on the drone was a good idea- it does look far more balanced now.

A 730 point No Limits skirmish with Reavers vs Galactic Marines.
An outpost on a back water world misses a check in. Calls to the outpost are not returned. A squad of Galactic Marines are sent to investigate. Their orders are simple. Asses the situation, rescue survivors, retrieve the outpost data base, and eliminate any threats.
Turn 1
The Reavers start in the back of the outpost.
The Marines start just outside the main door.
The Marines loose the initiative roll and move first. They proceed with caution down the main cargo bay into the heart of the outpost.
The Reavers move not-so-cautiously down the port and starboard corridors attempting to flank the Marines!
Turn 2
The Veteran Marine Sargent takes up position outside one closed door, the Marine Commander takes the other door. The rest of the Marines, take position to fire in case the Reavers get through.
The Reavers continue their movement to the doors. One group of Reavers splits off and goes through the Cryo-bays to attempt to get behind the Marines, while others cover the door as still more attempt to get into a firing position on balcony.
Turn 3
Every time a Reaver steps up to the door he is cut down by the Sargent or the Commander. The Sargent takes out two Reavers while the Commander takes out three. The remaining Reavers make it to the balcony and spray the room below with automatic fire. Several Marines are hit, but their armor saves them. The commander is wounded.
Turn 4
Several of the marines open fire on the Reavers in the balcony, killing one. Two more marines attempt to use their jump packs to get into Hand to hand combat, but fail their landing rolls and fall flat on their tail (in front of the Enemy AND their commander!)
Turn 5
The Marines on the balcony get up and eliminate the remaining Reaver on the balcony, who, by the way, missed them even when they were on the ground in front of him. He must have been laughing at their fall.
The Marine commander enters the room and defeats the last of the Reavers that were there.
Meanwhile the Marine Sargent it overwhelmed at last and killed by the Reavers, just as the small group of Reavers breaks in from behind them from the Cryo bay!
Turn 6
In the chaos that ensues the Reavers slay another marine, but the Marines take their revenge and kill all but four Reavers! At the end of the turn the Marine commander has cut through the Cryo bay and has come up behind the remaining Reavers.
Turn 7
Two of the Reavers turn and engage the Marine Commander in close combat. Missing his armor rolls and saves, he takes two more wounds and is down! (House Rule: He'll be back, he's just critically wounded and out of the fight.) In their fury and lust for revenge the Marines quickly eliminate the remaining Reavers.
Ending
The Marines Medevaced their wounded, retrieved the data and eliminated all the Reavers. No survivors were found.
Reavers killed: 20
Marines killed: 3
Closing thoughts:
The marines toughness and armor was hard for the Reavers to beat. The Reavers strength is the teamwork skill that grants them +1 to close combat and strength for each unit with this skill in close combat with the same enemy unit. This was effectively canceled due to bottling them up in close quarters. It would have been better to let the Marines get into a larger room where their numbers could have turned the tide of battle.
Even though I lost (badly) it was a really fun game.

Love your work! And a very nice report :)
-
I've actually had a few moments to prime these guys.

I'm not quite sure what the thing on the right is supposed to be, I found it in a bits box for .25 cents. The object on the left will be a shield generator. It needs something, but I'm at a bit of a loss. Perhaps some wires from guitar strings?
And finally an old AT-43 model what will serve as a light mech for my Grymn mercenaries.

Hi Guys,
As I was rooting around in my miniature cases I ran across this gal. She is from one of the first armies I painted way back in the day. The base is just painted sand.
A few years back I got the bright idea to give them a dull coat and redo the base ala this guy.
But now I'm thinking of just scrapping that and giving them resin bases. Does anyone have any suggestions as to some resin bases that might work well with these guys?
I love Fenris scifi bases, but I'm looking for something different for these (guys and gals).
So any and all suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!
Just for fun, a shot of them together.

I've been traveling quite a bit for work and with one graduation High School and going off to college and an international move this summer I've been quite busy. I was able to push a bit of paint around on my salvage team.

Our big international move is two weeks away, so I had to finish these guys up and pack them. Here is the mech for my Grymn.

Both mech's together:
And the Rescue/Salvage Team.
Group Shot:
The Kid, who is the new guy on the crew. He was a junior officer in the Imperial Fleet specializing in Ships Sensors. Now he handles all the sensor scanning during rescue/salvage missions. With him is Turk. His strength and skill with a shot gun make him a valued member of the team.
Flash, got his name after bragging about how well he could handle a flamer, only to display that he had absolutely no skill with the weapon. For weeks afterward the Master Chief drilled him in its use and still refuses to let him carry anything but a flamer on missions as a reminder to not let his mouth make boasts his body can't back up. The Master Chief once called him a "Flash in the Pan" and soon after the rest of the team called him Flash.
Next to him is Monk. Monk actually belongs to an obscure holy order. Part of their vows is to help people in need. The credits he earns goes to his order and to other charities such as hospitals and orphanages. His head is always covered, and when not on a mission he is often fasting, praying, and when not chanting on a vow of silence. Which can make ship life somewhat... interesting. He is also a crack shot with the boarding shotgun.
The Master Chief is late of the Imperial Navy. Scuttlebutt has it that he was decorated several times for gallantry in action, and served in several major fleet actions. He has a bionic leg and bionic eye that were a results from wounds received in action. He is a smart, no-nonsense leader especially when it comes to the safety of his team and the successful completion of the mission. He is armed with an old Mk I flamer that has been heavily modified. The custom power pack provides an extra kick that can even burn through bulkheads.
-
So how did the move go? Any more updates on this project? I'm very inspired by what you've done here.

Whew, we have settled into our new abode, and my wife got me some Hasslefree minis for Christmas! But before I paint them I am forcing my self to catch up on some projects that were put on hold with the move. Soo....
I have quite a few EM4 Space Rangers http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html) that I wanted to finish up.
Cleaned up and with the conversion parts set out.
All the models that need to be painted with a completed one for reference. The silver ones are new ones that I got from EM4, the purple ones are from many, many years ago that I got on trade at an online miniature trading post. (I think the trading post was called the Bear Cave or something like that). I think the detail on the purple ones is a bit more crisp, but once I had them primed, I couldn't tell the difference.

C & C welcome, thanks for looking!

I'm loving those spotters and cutters :-*
-
Missed this thread completely - really like what you're doing with the figures and the WorldWorks terrain looks great :-* I'm building some of their Mars Station buildings at the moment, but I'll need to look again at their interiors.
Not sure if you ever found the resin bases you were looking for, but Antenocitis Workshop (http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/wargames-bases-basing/25mm-round-bases.html?limit=36&p=1) has some that may be worth looking at.

And... I'm done!

The painting scheme is fairly simple. Prime white, Base coat dark red, black wash, Middle red, highlight bright red. With the leader I did an extra highlight of red/yellow.
Here is a group shot of all 19 or so. This was the biggest group I've ever tried to paint at one time.

I really don't want to paint with red for a while...
lol I really know what you mean! Painting 'space marines' in numbers is quite a task.
I love how you have made use of those Space Rangers! I remember the boxed set from around 1990.

Lovely stuff!
May I ask what rules are you using?

Here is a WIP shot of my current project. 3 Maws from Hasslefree Miniatures. This is one of my favorite companies.
Drilling and pining. Normally I have no problems assembling Hasslefree Miniatures, but these guys were a... ummm.. beast to put together. I don't know if I mixed up the legs with different bodies or what, but I had a difficult time attaching the legs so all four legs would lay flat on the base. So I had to get creative with some green stuff and my bases.
Finally assembled
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3X8PntfyBmM/UygbJxwKh-I/AAAAAAAAEsM/O1e4YaLENcE/s640/DSC01633.JPG)
Siting on their bases, with GS done. At this stage the bases need some GS and some clan up.
And just for fun a close up of the bases. These guy will be used to terrorize players in my indoor games.

I finally finished up my Maw's from Hasslefree. I suck at flesh tones, but I'm pretty happy the way they turned out.

Love the Maws! Great job with them and the Boarding troops (the high Gorgets on them are ace).

Hi all,
It has been a while, but with working full time, having a family and going to grad school, not much time is left for fun stuff. We are on holiday and I had an opportunity to work a bit on my generic security squad types. The wifi here is really bad. It took me longer to up load the photos than it took to paint!
These are EM4 plastic troopers. I will have a squad with pistols, a squad with rifles, and a special weapons squad.
Here is the first coat of blue blocked in.
Squad leaders with special scanner and sensor equipment.

You may notice that I did some extra sanding on the GS hand held sensors to make them a little less bulky. The power cable is from an old guitar string.
The helmets and the chest armor, boots and gloves will be tactical black. Anyone have any good tips/tutorials for highlighting and shading black?
Thanks for reading, and as always C&C is always welcome.
-
Brilliant stuff. Excuse my ignorance, but what's No Limits?
-
Scifi rule set that is sort of open source-ish. I believe they are based off the old Void rules.
-
Is that a head swop in the last two pics, don't recognise them from the plastics sprue.
-
Is that a head swop in the last two pics, don't recognise them from the plastics sprue.
No, the EM4 Heavy weapon set comes with metal head/chest pieces that fit onto the plastic legs and back of the plastic trooper. I used the Heavy Weapons fronts for the squad leaders since they don't have the same armor torso look as the standard plastic front.
You can sort of see it here: http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html)

Finally finished a squad of my police/security team. I'm sorry about the poor pictures the lighting was bad and I tried to adjust the contrast.
Some support, for when pistols just don't cut it.

In hindsight, I probably should have painted the knee pads to match the body armor. I may do that on the next batch.
Next up, the guys with the rifles.
-
looking good.
-
nice, like the visors in particular.

Nice work. :)

I have been taking a small break from painting and I have started assembling the terrain I received from the Battle Systems Kickstarter.

Hmmm, I have to get mine assembled, too!
-
Excellent thread. Thanks!
-
Small update.
I finished my security detail armed with long guns (can you call a laser rifle a rifle since the barrel is not rifled?)
For some reason, even with a light, I couldn't get the pictures to come out right. The colors are a bit more vivid in real life.
In my games I needed something to represent a shield generator. A bit of green stuff, the part of a super glue container and some paint and... shield generator!
Next up? Some robotic support for the men in blue!

During the holidays I had a break from work and school and I was able to do a bit of painting.
Some robots to support my security team. These are EM4 miniatures. The smaller one's are Mark 1 support robots while the larger ones are Mark 2 assault robots. The theory is that the smaller ones stand off and provide fire support, while the larger ones can engage in close support and potentially rescue hostages, etc.

I think I am done with blue for a while...

Great stuff in this thread.

I finished another miniature, this was a Christmas present. I didn't realize how large this miniature was until I saw it IRL.
The lighting was off, so the highlights are not showing properly.

I found these guys in a bits box at a local game shop. I also used this opportunity to try out the Steel-Catwalk Grating Base Stamp from Happy Seppuku (odd name) that I received for Christmas. I used green stuff on the bases and then pressed the stamp into the base. I found the green stuff a little tough to work with, and it was challenging for me to get an even surface, so some of my initial tries are a little warped.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U6E_8U3ZpLs/VXArbsZFHqI/AAAAAAAAFBI/G7URFqnDCOI/s400/DSC01773.JPG) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G077wPWmMHk/VXArcJbVCUI/AAAAAAAAFBM/Oru2sg0jSYw/s400/DSC01774.JPG)
Anyway they are now ready to run around my space hulk and get all feral on some poor salvage crew.
The next batch are smaller 25mm bases and I used some old milliput I found in the back of my workbench. I found the milliput a bit easier to work with. One of the tricks is to figure out how much pressure to use when pressing the base into the stamp. Too little pressure and I didn't get a clear impression. Too much pressure and it was very deep and "wobbly".
After letting the bases dry, I trimmed off the excess milliput and here are the results.
Any suggestions on getting clear, crisp impressions are always welcome!
-
Great work on all these models. Both the sculpting and paint is very impressive. Looks like some fun times will be had with these.
-
The painting on those wolves is fantastic! I'd hate to see those coming around the corner in a Space Hulk. The idea of feral dogs in a Spoace Hulk is really cool. The bases are very effective too. The hex shaped one brought a smile.
-
Summer classes have ended, so I had a moment to paint up these guys. The bases are from the previous WIP post. I added a wash of GW Gryphonne Sepia and it gave it a nice rusty look. I'm rather pleased how the bases turned out.
And here is some close up's of the little monsters.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mxD1V21uQDI/Vby_4279pSI/AAAAAAAAFCg/CvoJLLlmcEg/s400-Ic42/DSC01913.JPG) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--x6a4NbSPx0/Vby_5cHHNaI/AAAAAAAAFCo/c_d3pZkoROE/s400-Ic42/DSC01916.JPG)
Next I think I will have to paint up some larger relatives of these guys. This was my first time ever painting an ork :)
-
I'm trying to work my way through the lead pile accumulated on my paint tray. Up next were a few odds and ends as well as some Hasslefree minis I received last Christmas.
The "not-Fred" was a freebie tossed in by the good people at Hasslefree and I was at a loss on what to do with him, so I painted him up as a lab-tech.
Here the lab techs can be seen in their lab checking out a newly discovered piece of tech being moved into the area by an Itoyo 950 cargo bot under the supervision of She-3P0, protocol droid and lab assistant.

Two more items are off the work bench! I have had these things for a while. I found them in a bits box at a FLGS while I was in the USA. I don't recall who made them or what they are called. Here they are as I found them and after I primed them:

I'm not quite sure how to imagine them for game play. Docile, brainless critters or something else. Any suggestions?
-
They look like GW figures. I will give the lizard man chariot a look.

The Holidays gave me a chance to pick up the paint brush, so I had an opportunity to start on some Assault on Black Reach Orks I have had for a long time.

Thank you for the kind words Bloggard!
You are right, they do look a bit dark. I tried to tweak them a bit and uploaded them again. Let me know if that helps!

My kids are awesome. For Christmas they got me some Cobalt-1 SF miniatures by Black Hat Miniatures.
First up some Ar-men who are going to serve as body guards. They have a lot of character and were fun to paint. There was a lot of flash on them, but they cleaned up nice.
Next up is Erkon and Manchos (I'm not sure which is which). One is a weird, mutant alien, while the other is an Aruk (Space Worm Man?!) who is his bodyguard. I imagine the little guy is a psi/force user genius type, while his body guard is a barbarian, smash it until it stops moving, type. There were a few problems with these miniatures. The small guy had a huge hole in his left foot and the big guy had a large air bubble in the back of his left leg. Nothing some Green stuff wouldn't fix, but I wasn't in the mood, so I painted them as is. Again, lots of character and a lot of fun to paint!

Well after finishing my graduate degree, working for six months away from home and moving to a new home a month after getting back to Europe, I finally have been able to paint!
I found these guys in a bits box at a local game shop. They were missing their feet so I had to try to sculpt new ones. THe feet are a bit large, but when the subject is an alien, I suppose I can get away with it.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/X_WMagcXaGU-SESE5FAxKIxHKZELp7M3UpSj7Im7Py_pYqq7LYXeUG0JTmKe57kUALmPCI0zlw=w400) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eZCErZLORFi5eYaTVVF_ZZiJ0xYjYGVPYJPE-QaBBtigP67RdKUxhA-bYsSgq0FI-UH1yMUU8EUCahtwUD7Dd_Un3NJ9fNsCVLBlmKHoVVmp_10oDNwLlN7_qTyeMdQpnNREsj04tizfsd5lA1v4aWlBi-RygbS2M2F7YJT8kYvkC4NJdsaqtQh_jxirnTvj2ywbl68WGPUF5IAP2IqdYLvaDR8k1sPnXj9Ignk5GijXGM7w4l6QuFX5SumSzyJlUjK1Lgo4scjv_GfnxNs0wJpMY0rf_YpZFoJFKVw6PBzcpsNTZ1dHjiMjkxgpoJeKsifSSTwGlLU8mRb8OUK9-_uGRInmUongok7zbiQMdxPKNaO-6BsEhck64e_Grm7W9Ncznd2GwRfWq7G_huLHZaBXGlFMwLHcnOnQzGbYfjlppkJKBeTEtflZ9cao-LvF6-uBiSqfcvR9Nc6dkdnc3oH3qC1o_6x-CFaBteZLw61-JOLdYk2zPUaAiR7nVasmUx29PMNAXoj06-LG0V6quutNJgs4bwjryDA2pudp1QWXc6FB9XSWAvKQeo7tEPqaMEJ7qfskFEkqFqPTDsxQmGznBm5Q6kGTK0ufSz4S8-pyOi-pohZV=s676-no)
I've painted them up to be science / lab types for scenario games.
Next up a batch of Mantic Zombies!
I got about 15 of these guys from the first kickstarter that I'm finally getting around to painting. Having not painted in some time these offer an easy way to "limber up" and get back in shape.
The uniform came out a bit more green than I wanted. The next batch I will do a brown wash over the khaki rather than green wash. Hopefully this will provide a bit more contrast between the skin and and the uniform.
Comments and suggestions to improve my painting are always welcome.

On a side note, I just discovered Google is not supporting Picasa. It is a litter more complecated to link photos. Is anyone using another service that may be a bit more user friendly?
-
Yeah, miffed about the loss of Picasa :(
However, your photos should now be in google photo (mine were).
Navigate to the picture, right click on it and select "copy image location". This should give you a huge url that you can paste in here - at least it worked for me at the weekend.

Navigate to the picture, right click on it and select "copy image location". This should give you a huge url that you can paste in here - at least it worked for me at the weekend.
Yes, the url's it provides are HUGE! In Picassa I could also select the image size, now I have to remember the code for resizing the photos on the forum...
I was able to upload the photos from Picassa, but I suppose their is a way to do that from google photos. I'll have to mess around with it when I get home from work.
-
On a side note, I just discovered Google is not supporting Picasa. It is a litter more complecated to link photos. Is anyone using another service that may be a bit more user friendly?
You can attach pics to your posts here:
Below the editor window is a button called 'Additional options'.
If you click that, you will find the option 'Attach´, works just like attaching files to webmail.

In an effort to take better pictures of my miniatures, I purchased and inexpensive light box with built in LEDs. I got it for about 20€ on amazon. It bows in a bit on the side, but I think I can fix that.

I am using a Sony Cybershot Model DSC-WX50. I'm sure there are some settings that I need to tweak that will help.

Looking good.
I think the most likely problem will be that the camera is seeing all the white of the light box and adjusting the settings to take this into account. What you want it to do is to look at the dark figures and set the camera settings for them.
How you tell the camera to do this really depends on the camera - from a quick google yours looks to be a point and shoot style one, but hopefully it has a few settings to override the automatic ones.
Ones to look for adjusting the exposure, making it a couple of stops longer (i.e. let more light in)
Or look for one where you can set the point where the camera picks the light in the shot from.
Another approach is put in a base and background that is more neutral in colour, this will stop the camera from seeing so much white. You can either use some gaming scenery, or a graduated single colour (grey or blue are popular), you can print these off from the internet.
Its worth preserving as you are getting a good amount of light on to all sides of the figures (which is the main benefit of a light box)

Thank you for the helpful information Fred. I did see something that looked like an exposure setting. I plan on doing some more shooting in the morning and see if that does the trick. Thanks again.

I have a few games that will be played this weekend and I had a project that I wanted to finish up so I could use the miniatures for this go around. The paint job was fast and not as detailed as I would have liked, but I was fighting the clock.
This project started as I was putting together the Veer Myn I received as a part of the Mantic Kickstarter. As I assembled the Veer Myn I found that I had a lot of arms left over and then I remembered that I had some GW Skaven that I rescued from the Bit Box a local games shop. And I wondered.... would the arms fit?
So after a bit of surgery... They look like knuckle dragging reject runts of the litter... but I suppose that will work for alien space rats.

A few of the Skaven were missing tales so I tried to make some out of Miliput... but I think I should have used Green Stuff. The Miliput didn't want to stay on my frame work. Perhaps I used too much at one time or it was too wet. But eventually I was able to get to this (the one on the right was not one of my tail sculpting attempts):

They are easy to make this way. Just print them out, cut them out and bake for about three minutes. I was able to make many tokens (50+) using this method. I plan on using a black sharpie to edge them.

The gears are salvage tokens, the blood drops wound tokens, the cross hairs represent units that are targeted (+1 to hit) and the half circle thing is a scanner blip. (Units that have scanners can find hidden enemy units, but will not know what kind of enemy unit until LOS or combat with that unit erupts. So when a unit is discovered via the scanner, the "blip" token is placed in area of the hidden units.)
-
A recent game used my shrinky dink tokens. There were new players so we kept the game simple so they could learn the moment and combat rules. Each player was given the same unit and the goal was simple, gather as many "salvage" tokens as you can and exit via the starting area. The player who had the most salvage wins.
The players could gain salvage simply by moving into the adjacent square of the salvage token and loot salvage from a fallen foe.
Two of the players got so involved in shooting at each other that they ignored the third player who grabbed six of the ten tokens and exited the facility.
Here are some photos of the game in progress.
The players in their starting zones.

Nice looking rats.

I head out to a week of summer camp tomorrow and I finished up these guys just in time. I'm in the middle of packing so I grabbed a few photos with my phone. I apologize in advance for the poor quality photos.
The swarm of critters that will attack my unsuspecting players.

These critters are fast, but relatively weak... one on one. Get a few attacking at one time and the players can quick get overwhelmed.
I wonder if I should tell my players that these little guys are vulnerable to AoE weapons like shotguns and grenades... or should I let them figure it out on their own?

Great job on the repurposed Skaven. The Ver Myn are excellent too.

Hi All,
A small update: Summer is a very busy time for us but I did have an opportunity to finish these guys.
Engineer G'Orbin: "M'Lord it seems some of your retainers have not been taking proper hazmat precautions again... I'll stand over there while chastise them."
Sith Lord Bob: "Stand aside, minion, while they suffer my wrath for failing to wash their hands!"
Captain Malus: (Thinking to himself) "Why did I sign on as a body guard for a Sith Lord?!"

And the lightsaber blade is from where or made from what?
Grimm
It is acrylic rod that I purchased from Hasslefree (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=acrylic-rod-%252d-1.6mmx50mm-%285%29-%252d-red~hfacr16r&category=accessories~acrylic (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=acrylic-rod-%252d-1.6mmx50mm-%285%29-%252d-red~hfacr16r&category=accessories~acrylic)).
It was too transparent for my tastes so I worked it over with some sandpaper to make it a bit more opaque.
Cheers

Things have slowed down a bit and I've been able to work on the Forge Fathers that I picked up as part of Mantic's Kickstarter.
I really liked these guys, they were easy to assembly (the shoulder pads were a bit fiddly) once I found some instructions online. There are still a few parts on the sprue I have no idea what they are supposed to be.
Anyway, here is the entire crew.

Cool to see some Deadzone/Firefight/Warpath models once in a while!
I have a small Deadzone project in the funnel as well, but it stalled along with all my other hobby activity early spring this year - I hope to resume work somewhen during this winter, and seeing your work is one of those small nudges towards picking up the brush! :)

My Christmas present to myself is some of GW's steampunk dwarfs to use as high gravity world miners/pirates.
I am slightly concerned the GW "dwarfs" will not look particularly dwarfish against Hasslefree and other ranges. If they turn out to be too large, these guys look like they would serve the same purpose.
Are they restic or plastic, because I really hate the Mantic restic >:(

I would love to see your high gravity world miners/pirates. Very cool concept!
These are plastic that I received as part of the kickstarter.

Those look cool :) ... The Mantic Forge Guard are great miniatures (but the gap between the torso and legs is annoying and needs a fair amount of filling).
If anyone needs some scale pix for Mantic/Kharadron etc. I have some here:

The images are straight forward... you just have to ignore all the other stuff on there (please :o :D ).

Finally some drones.
The small one will act as a shield drone for the command unit and the ones with the "ear" fins will server as targeting / scout drones. Mantic only included two of the "middle" pieces, the parts the connect the base to the drone. So I had to come up with my own solution to attaching the other drones to bases.

Those look cool :) ... The Mantic Forge Guard are great miniatures (but the gap between the torso and legs is annoying and needs a fair amount of filling).
Yes! I can't imagine why they would make such nice models and then not take the necessary steps to insure they pieces fit together well.
-
I was able to push a bit of paint around last week and I finally reduced my lead pile by 5! I've had these guys for about two years and I'm glad to have a chance to paint them. I love Kev White's sci-fi stuff!
I had some space wolf decals I thought might be cool looking on them. And I attempted to use some Vallejo Decal Fix. I followed the online directions, but I don't think it worked as intended. Anyone have any experience with this stuff that can give me some pro-tips or suggest a product they like better?

Hmm... haven't used Vallejo's stuff, only Micro Set and Micro Sol
There's a video about the Vallejo product here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJE58XWVKak
-
Maybe the problems where with the decals themselves? The crossbones/skulls ones seem to be the old ones, from the Bike Squadron. If they are old you can get some yellowing on them :\
-
Nice stuff there!
The Engineer is indeed a Star Wars "bendy plastic" figure from WotC. They're the little engineers on Utapau in RotS who start to work on Obi-Wan's fighter when he lands, just before he fights Grievous.
And a fine paint job too, if I may say so!
Love your Asterian Marionette droids, I think I painted mine exactly the same way! Cracking models too - restored my faith in Mantic.
-
Part of the issue may have been that the decals are indeed old while another part may have been my inexperience with decal fix.
The problems were with the ones placed on the shoulders. They were lifting a bit because of the curved surface and one edge seemed to "bead up" and I had to work it a lot with the brush to finally get it to lay flat.
Can someone explain the difference between decal fix and decal medium?
I've heard of micro set and micro sol and I'm not adverse to switching to those products. Is there a tutorial on their use you would recommend?
-
I used this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pFcTb2lJWw
I don't use a lot of traditional waterslide transfers (LBMS 'stickers' work in a different way), but am currently prepping some Warlord Games (ex Immortal) plastic hoplites for which waterslide shield transfers are supplied in the box, so I expect to pay around with Micro Set and Micro Sol when they are painted.
-
And here's another one, about decals on shoulderpads using Micro Set and Sol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQiDs9nI7P4
-
Thanks for the tips! I think I'm going to buy some Micro set and sol. Do you need to put a layer of gloss varnish on the model before using those products for a better seal? It didn't look like it in the video.
-
I usually use a coat of gloss varnish before putting any decals on.
-
It is recommended, yes.
I don't remember if the video says so, but it is also a good idea to seal the transfer with varnish after it is dry (but you probably knew that).
-
Just finished my "Dogs of War" squad. I received the leader and two heavys for Christmas and had a chance to paint them up. Easy and fun to do. I forget where my beloved wife purchased them, I'd be interested in adding a few more to the squad.
Anyone know who made them?
The bases are from Fenris.

I bet my money on "Ar-men Command 2" from Black Hat Miniatures. Sadly I cannot find them on their website anymore.

I bet my money on "Ar-men Command 2" from Black Hat Miniatures. Sadly I cannot find them on their website anymore.
Thanks, Von der Tann,
I found them here: https://www.blackhat.co.uk/ (https://www.blackhat.co.uk/)
It looks like they have sold a lot of their 25/28mm range including their sci-fi range to Bridge Miniatures.
From Black Hat Twitter Feed:
25/28mm Ranges Sold
We have today sold the majority of our 25/28mm ranges to another company.
This does NOT include the 28mm Chinese Fantasy range Tales of the Dragon Kings which we are still producing but does include the following ranges:
Samurai
3 Musketeers
Gladiators
Robin Hood
Shattered Isles Fantasy
Cobalt-1 Science Fiction
Mutants and Madmen SF / Superheroes
The new owner is in the process of setting up a new company and will be using these ranges as a basis for this new venture. As soon as the ranges are available again we will add the information to our website. As of today all the ranges are marked as out of stock and we can no longer accept orders for them.
This is part of a small change of direction for Black Hat and myself. I have been running a new Toy Soldier company Imperial Miniatures alongside Black Hat for a while now and am finding that I have been so busy with both ventures that I simply do not have the time to develop new products which is the fun, interesting side of the business.
This has meant that Black Hat has suffered as I have not been able to expand ranges.
I will now have more time to release the new figures that have been sculpted and moulded for Martian Empires and it will also enable me to have the time to concentrate on and give proper attention to the 15mm ranges, the 54mm Toy Soldiers and the Coat D’arms paint range.
Many thanks
Mike Lewis

The first two citizens of Sulfer Slag Oasis. Old Amos and his half-eldari daughter Spring. When asked about his daughter Old Amos just smiles and gets a far-away look in his eyes. People that ask Spring about her heritage often get shot.
Old Amos is an EM4 ganger with the heavy weapons option. The lead parts are kinda neat and have nice detail. Spring is an EM4 ganger with an old GW las-pistol and a hasslefree head swap. I didn't notice that they don't have ears and my feeble attempt at making ears led to pointly ones...

Two more members of the Sulfur Slag Oasis community are done. Please meet Slick and Sly. Slick is sporting a jaunty red beret and a surprisingly modern (if large) laser pistol while Sly is wielding an older model bolt gun. The addition of a foregrip helps make the recoil a bit more manageable and the homemade ammunition makes the reduces the firepower considerably compared to military loads. Nevertheless, they stand ready to welcome honest traders and defend their home from bandits.

Furiously trying to finish my armed civilians before the weekend (camp starts next Monday and we usually have time for a few games).
Grace and Carlos bring a bit of style to the community as well as a bit of extra firepower. Carlos and his light machine gun help keep the traders visiting the Oasis honest.

Padre Pio and Clint are the founding members of the community. Some say that he is a religious leader of some forgotten sect who was sent to the hive to atone for some sin. Others say he is a deserter who saw too much of the horrors of war. Whatever he is, he is the undisputed leader of the community who is quick to defend the members of his little flock with tactics and skills that rival even the constabulary.

Here is a shot of the entire community. I'm looking for more miniatures that may be a good fit to add to the collection. Any suggestions?

Very nice. The miniature painting is great. And I love those terrain pieces.

The terrain bug has bitten me again (and my semester is winding down so I have a bit of free time).
The start of the project...

Interesting ideas. Always nice to see what others make,

Phase 2: Bridges/Walkways.
I found this new (to me) stuff called PVC rigid foam of PVC foam board at a local shop. It's 3mm thick and is easy to cut. If anyone has any tips on working with this stuff (gluing, painting, etc.) please feel free to share your experiences.
Anyway, on with the show: PVC foam board, granny grating, and paper templates to start.

good start on the terrain

Those cooling towers / vents are very clever and look good too. Great way to get some dense terrain onto the table top.
-
Doing a bit of painting before I put it all together since some areas that are visible will be hard to paint when assembled.
Some of the grating painted.

After working furiously over the Christmas break I have most of my towers and bridges done. I've added a few posters to give it a bit of color and a "lived in" look. I still need a few tower platforms that are large enough to have a small skirmish on and a better stairway.

The magnets seem to hold the bridges in well and they are fairly sturdy. I'm not quite sure what is the best way and store these new terrain pieces... I guess I should have thought of that ahead of time lol.

I had a few GW products that didn't fit well into my homemade paint station so I bought a few 15ml bottles off of Amazon and did some transferring. The GW washes transferred with no problem. Some of the paints took a bit of coaxing but now I'm enjoying a bit more control when adding paint to the wet pallet.
Anyone else do this? Do you have any tips and tricks? More importantly, why doesn't GW use dropper bottles??

Had a chance for three games this past weekend! One was a larger battle that was called due to time :'( the other two were quick arena deathmatches.
An important processing plant has been taken over by a horde of filthy alien bugs and the heroic troopers must liberate for mom, apple pie, etc. etc. It is Space Rangers and Forge Fathers vs Nids. My young padawans all wanting to play against me. The game mat is from the Battle Systems Kickstarter and the terrain is a mix of paper terrain and homemade stuff.

Turn 1
The allies win the die roll and go first. The Dwarfs ignore the advice of the human commanders and rush to the middle of the factory in an effort to get to the high ground. This proves fatal as the stinkin' nids with their bug guns take down the heroic Forge Father leader who elected not to take cover. First blood is drawn! In this image you can see said Dwarf leader moments before he is shot.

Again the allies gain the initiative and move first. At this point, the game was called due to dinner being served at the facility... But everyone had fun and that was the goal.
I liked using the game mat, it has 1" squares that made it easy for the new players to move, fire and plan their strategy. I would like to get a larger mat, perhaps 4'x3' mat. I've seen several online, but I can't quite seem to find exactly what I want.
Something that's station or hive like that has 1" grid marks. Does anyone know of anything like that?

Nice looking game

What's interesting is that your homemade terrain made out of grating and yogurt containers looks just as good as most of the 'professional' resin stuff out there. Very cool.

So cool! I had missed the finished terrain, I love it!

After working for a month I finally got a day off and enjoyed finishing up these guys. These are the last of the AoBR ork troops. I have the Nobs and the boss to finish but they can wait. Next up, some Aruk! It looks Like Bridge Miniatures is now carrying the Cobalt-1 Line! https://bridgeminiatures.com/product-category/cobalt-1/cobalt-1-aruk/ (https://bridgeminiatures.com/product-category/cobalt-1/cobalt-1-aruk/)

Love the dark skin tones on those Orks, Bahir!
As far as the Cobalt miniatures are concerned, I just received my order of Ar-Men and some Marines from Bridge Miniatures and I can say that I was delighted with the service (and the casting on the minis was top-notch). They were fantastic to deal with - can definitely recommend them!
Just as a by-the-by - is that a Praying Mantis prowling along behind the Ork gang?
-
Hi Hawkeye,
Thank you for your kind words.
Yes, its from Ral Partha. I found it in a bits box at a local game shop. It's stamped 199* the * is illegible.
-
I liked using the game mat, it has 1" squares that made it easy for the new players to move, fire and plan their strategy. I would like to get a larger mat, perhaps 4'x3' mat. I've seen several online, but I can't quite seem to find exactly what I want.
Something that's station or hive like that has 1" grid marks. Does anyone know of anything like that?
No 1" grid, but the Deepcut Space Hulk mat (https://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-space-hulk/ (https://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-space-hulk/)) has the station/hive look about it and comes in 3'x3' and 4'x4' options.

Three more Aruk to add to the gang. Now that Bridge Miniatures is producing them, I may pick up a command squad.
These were purchased from the company that produced them before Bridges. There was a lot of flash, and some miscasts parts. The leg on the little dude was misshapen, the guy with the ax had a hole in his leg and one of the troopers had a hole in the corner of the shoulder pad. But overall they have a lot of character and they were fun to paint.

To Mr. Happy I've added a life support system (gotta keep the "water" in his tank fresh) and a screen where he can display images/text etc.

It has been a while, with school, work, and international travel for work. While I was in the USA a friend of mine gave me some 3D prints of some models he printed off of his resin printer. I was very impressed with the quality and now I have an itch to get my own printer.
The models are from Thingverse and the designer was Brexit. You can find them here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3028475 (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3028475)

Two more minis completed.
The first is a brain in a jar by Reaper Minis. I've added a life support system to the back and a computer interface to the front. In the jar (it is hard to tell from the photo) is a vent that goes to the life support system in the back. I will be using it as a special character called Mr. Happy. Mr. Happy is an organic computer with Psi abilities. He is a repository of secret information that individuals prefer not to keep in the usual computer systems that could be hacked. While Mr. Happy can communicate telepathically, he(?) prefers to use machine-generated speech with accompanying emojis on his forward-facing display. Mr. Happy is always accompanied by bodyguards.

The second miniature is from Mantic Games. It is the Teraton Brawler from the Kickstarter and I am using it as a heavy for my Grymn assault squad. He (she?) adds some much-needed close combat firepower to my Grymn mercenary unit. Compared to the Grymn, this guy (gal?) is huge!!

Your Mr. Happy and Dark Jedi are both brilliant work, lovin‘em.
-
Last Month was Game Night and we tested some WIP rules for Jedi in the game. It was a fun night, and a few of the Jedi abilities were a bit OP and need to be toned down, but it was fun nonetheless.
The game consisted of three teams that needed to retrieve critical information from an industrial complex computer. The team that had a unit in control of the computer at the end of the turn won.
The setup: Bottom of the photo some Ar-men and a grey Jedi, to the left Mr. Happy (Grey Jedi) and some security forces.

Turn 2: Two of the gangers mix it up with the Ar-men. Shots fire and blades slash but somehow no one is injured. Using his men as a meat shield, the sith uses force leap and jumps to the computer to retrieve the data. If no other unit can get into base-to-base contact with the computer or kill the sith, the sith team will win!

Small terrain project that I completed, a water treatment plant for my hive community of Sulfer Springs Oasis.
I'm trying to make it modular 6x6... but I didn't notice until I was done this one was 6x5 :'( Next up, some type of generator room (this time 6x6 lol).
Shortly after starting out.
