Title: Chinese compound
Post by: OSHIROmodels on January 26, 2013, 05:25:11 PM
Small commission for a nice chap on this here very forum  :)

The two Chinese buildings I have on my website plus some scratch built walls and a simple gateway. Normal ground work and the buildings were inked with a mix I've made recently because the old GW isn't on sale anymore (the new ones are crap).

It's a mix of matte medium, flow improver and some water. The medium and flow improver are in thirds and then there's about a sixth of water and the rest is made up from Vallejo inks, black brown and green (no ratio for the inks, just whatever takes your fancy).

It's not exactly the same but it does the job better than the new ones and the Vallejo one their own.

Excellent work you,ve really captured the feel of the period. I particularly like the way you,ve used the whole tile . Question : is this a cork place mat turned upside down ? as I often use them myself, very well done sir !

That is great work, as always, James!

Which old GW ink(s) did you used to use?

Finally, the only change that might be worth thinking about making would be to model doors for the gateway.

The inks before they released the whole new set a couple of months ago.

I did think about doors but it's primarily a gaming peice and they tend to get in the way.

With great patience  lol

I literally sit there for 15-20mins bending it to the shape easing it ever so gradually as it would snap or fold if done too quick.

Very nice! Do those beautiful curved roofs come off to allow access to the building interiors?

How long does it take you to scratch build a model like that?

'Fraid not.

How long does it take you to scratch build a model like that?

It depends on what is involved. Not the best answer I know but the most accurate one. This one took about 8-10 hours but it uses buildings from my catalogue.

No you wont, you'll cart it around and it will get damaged.
Far better to give it to me and I will take proper care of it, I'll give it a loving home where it will fit in properly.

No messing about just bring it round tonight and I'll say no more!!!!

Great compound, looks awsome!

What did you use as base?

If you're looking for the old GW washes try the army painter washes. It's more or less the same formula GW used. They only have the brownish colours though.

I have been using them and find that, although the colour is similar, they need a few layers to achieve the same effect and so can build up a little.
I have not used them that much, though, to be fair, and may just need more practice.

I hope you don't mind if try to "copy" it later this year...  ;)

VERY nice work! Try Secret Weapon Washes - they have at least 10-15 different colours - available in UK from Bascrafts. Really nice stuff...better than Vallejo's new washes even.
