Title: London's Mall circa 1890

My Web-Fu has totally failed. I'm looking for images (any format) of The Mall, London, circa 1890. I have a period map that implies it was grass, with rows of trees lining it, but would love to see photos, drawings, paintings, etc to support that.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

You could try something like the Illustrated London News :

but you would need to know of an event (parade etc ?) that featured the Mall to have a chance of finding it.

There is at least one Mall procession, but it's 1919 :

Otherwise, Punch magazine might be another option, but it's needle in a haystack time.

Have you tried asking one of the London civic bodies ?

Great map Tommy - this will be invaluable for all sorts of VSF and Gothic Horror games.

Anyone know where I can find a late 19th century map including Kew?

The best maps I've ever gotten are the Godfrey Edition of Old Ordnance Survey Maps for London. I have several (Holborn, The City, & The Strand - 1873; The West End - 1870; Westminster & Victoria - 1869). These are at 14" to the mile.

They also have a series at 1 yard to the mile for parts of London.

Another good source is http://www.OldHouseBooks.co.uk

They do various nineteenth-century London maps. The one I have is a Stanford's map of 1863, really detailed and very atmospheric, scale 6 inches to the mile : but the level of detail leaves you either getting out a magnifying glass or scanning the parts you want and blowing them up.
