After drooling over and playing with Za Zjurman's brilliant Hickory Flat I found myself with a bad case of Old West town envy. So I placed an order with Sarissa to start my own little town. I'll try and create slightly different buildings than ZZ so we can also combine our towns to a city.
The first building is going to be Mr. Lee's Laundry. (I'm thinking Bob Murch's Dr. Koo. :D) The sign still needs to be painted and I haven't figured out what to do with the roof yet but the basic build is done.

I've started my second building. It's the office of William Henry Oakes, physician. Since ZZ has the undertaker it felt only right for me to get a character that can keep people alive.
I wanted to try and do this a bit more fancy than the laundry building. So I've added some balsa and I am actually quite pleased how it turned out. Then I blatantly stole ZZ's wallpaper idea and stuck that on. So here are two pictures of a wall in progress.

I have finished this one as well, apart from roof and sign, so more pictures to come.
So far I am enjoying myself!

Welcome on board ;D
Looks good Groove. Is that shoe-polish on the balsa-wood? I've been thinking about some weather rules for Fistfulll of lead. We can try them out next week...
Regards,
Za

Shoepolish and badab black on the mdf, just devlan mud on the balsa wood. :)

Telling you, this stuff is like a sickness...I thought I was done, then I knocked out a rules set, and now I'm planning on building/buying several more additions to the town...
-
Nice start there Groove.

Glad it's not just me ...... Old West is the new crack cocaine. o_o

Likewise. I picked up 4 Aetherworks buildings at Cancon 2013 in the Bring & Buy (really, really good buy) and was contemplating one of the in construction versions but had second thoughts.
Nice start there Groove.

The town is inspired by Broken Hill Australia but mostly because when thinking of a good name for my town the TV series Flying Doctors popped into my head. lol
-
I have been to the house of one of the men who "discovered" Broken Hill. Needless to say it was very large and very nice.
-
I imagine the proper Broken Hill...wasn't?
-
Nice start on the buildings. the interior details look good.
Completely off topic is Broken Hill where part of the original Mad Max was filmed?
-
Ah, okay - so not unlike Tombstone (one of the more successful silver mining areas). Cool. I'd be lying if I said I knew jack sh_t about Australian history, especially that time frame.
I'd also like to learn about the turn of the century Russians who were so enthused with American Old West stuff that they had copy-cat clothes, firearms etc....in Russia!
-
Yes, Australia as a Wild Westy background is underrated, who can forget Mick Jagger as Ned Kelly or Quigley Down Under....... :o
-
Let me know how the weather rules turn out. I've done a sand storm and rain to limit visibility, etc.

I finally finished the two first buildings and I decided that I wanted to hand paint my signs. So here are Mr Lee's Laundry and the office of Dr. William Henry Oakes.

I'm also quite pleased with how the roofs have turned out. I used some asphalt that's used for train model building. And since this basically a big sticker it takes about 5 minutes to do a roof. Result! :D
I'm putting the finishing touches on building 3: The Land Office owned by Reed & Reed and I have started construction on building nr. 4: Lady Heather's Bar & Hotel. It's all slowly coming together. ;)
-
I guess that would be 'Lady Heather's' lol
-
Looking good Groove, could do with some bigger pictures though... my eyes are getting old lol. Guess I will see them in the flesh tomorrow.

On the subject of Australian "westerns" The Proposition is quite a good one.
-
the buildings are looking good.
as for Aussie Western inspiration, Wild Boys has just started in the UK on TCM (taking up the time slot left by the end of Hell on Wheels). I know it aired in Australia back in 2011, but i've no idea if its been on in the US. I also remember some kind of serial drama that was on in the 90s/00s. it really didn't interest me at the time as it seemed to be day time tv melodrama, so i never really watched it. Google-fu tells me it was "Snowy River" or some such thing. probably not interesting televisual entertainment, but might prove inspiration for the setting.

GREAT stuff Mate! Can't wait to game with them!

Broken Hill's greatest Wild West moment came in 1915 when a couple of Indian Muslim (now Pakistan) camel drivers went berserk and shot up a picnic train outside the city.
With a bit of creative tweaking it would make a great little scenario.

@Starkadder That looks very interesting. I'll have a proper look and see what I can come up with. :D
-
I finally managed to get the third building done. Hope you like it.

I named my town Broken Hill after the town in the series "Flying Doctors" and I thought I would continue to reference TV series I like with all the buildings in the town. Three buildings so far. Anyone want to guess? ;)
-
I absolutely love the interior you've built on your buildings. Fantastic stuff!
-
Can't wait for (your) Indians to take this town next! ;)
-
Sounds like we have some trouble with the locals...
-
Nothing the valiant Pinkerton men can't handle. (Or so they keep telling me). lol
-
Right, building no. 4 and religion comes to Broken Hill. I've even managed to put a bit of a raised floor in for the preacher to preach from. I'm quite happy with the end result. :)

I've also got some furniture now from Frontline Wargaming so I'm not done yet. lol
Thanks,
Groove

:o That is stunning Groove. :-*
Ps. Misses Za also likes the church.
-
I'd imagine you have a suitable pistol packin' preacher... lol
-
Yep. Although he mostly specialises in shotgun weddings. lol
-
That's a great setting groove. I have been tinkering with an outback post apocalyptic setting, and have just been inspired by red dead redemption. I'm thinking of mixing the two ;)
I bought some aetherworks lasercut buildings and am inspired to make a grand hotel. Perhaps a narrow gauge railway too. What else do you guys have planned?
Cheers
Matt
