Egads, what an OP!! I was about to post to say how amazing the first castle was, but then four more suddenly appeared. Lots of fantastic designs to steal, I really love the colouring and pattern on the roof of the last one. Thanks for posting your work, it's really impressive stuff!

Those are wonderful pieces of work! Thank you for sharing them. One question: do you prime or undercoat the blue foam before doing the main painting? If so, what do you use? I am finding that the blue foam swallows paint!

I managed to get mine on fleabay. The supplier does packs of a single thickness or selection packs containing a variety of sizes.

Lapin Rouge, are you JUST using a pen to make the stone patterns, or are you also using a knife or engraving tool to make the pattern deeper?

Amazing stuff. Really makes me wanna try out that blue foam.
One thing, how does that stuff stand the rigors of gaming?
It seems that it's very fragile and prone to get dented.

It's actually surprisingly tough and resiliant. Or it seems like it based on some rough handling on my workbench!

small foam board (3mm)  are fragile, but when you use 6mm + it's very resistant.
And white glue and paint make the stuff very tough when it's dried.
When i use 3mm foam board, i stick foam on cardboard what makes it very resiliant.

Of course, some pieces or details in balsa wood are a bit fragile, but i try not to make it too much.

There is 3 parts (for the moment) :

- Left : the house with removable flour and roof, also a staircase and furniture.
- Middle : the stable, with openable doors
- right : a barn with equipment and armament

The colours of the back wall is not finished, maybe i'll change for a brown like the house.

I had to sleep, but tomorrow the continuation :p

I like how you have sculpted/carved the large wooden beams. They are beautiful.

Here is the stable with ended roofs

Seen by the ground

Soon, the painting !  roofs will be black with grey clarification, pavement will be light brown.
For the meadow, i need some sands before finish it.
On the extreme right, i shall add certainly a dovecote.

Hi all,

i stopped the stable because i had to make a giant fortress for an order.
End of work in December or january...

Here, just 10% of the polystyren needed to the construction...

it was the second day of work, some walls and tower for the donjon in progress..

(http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/3515/1bnt.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/707/1bnt.jpg/)

And after 2 hours of work, you can imagine a little, the futur shape of the donjon.

The base is 40cm X 40 cm  ans the height is 30cm without roof.

This tower is based on a real tower in France, i'll show you soon which it is...

Hello !

Quote
One question: how do you get the blue foam sheet around the tubes? Whenever I've tried this, the foam just breaks up into pieces Cry

Hum it's a green polystyren ;)

it's a sheet of 3mm polystyren used as soundproofing material for parquet (i can show you a link but it's in French : http://www.castorama.fr/store/Sous-couche-pour-parquet-et-stratifie-PRDm548439.html (http://www.castorama.fr/store/Sous-couche-pour-parquet-et-stratifie-PRDm548439.html)

it's very flexible, and doesnt broke when you get it around tubes :)

Now the WIP of 3 towers :

A lot of work, the towers needs to be the same because they'll  be removable and exchangeable with another type of tower...

finally the fortress will be on a base of 120cmX120cm  and the table 180x180cm.

it's just the beginning :p and my english is not enought good to explain you now all the details :)

Do you scale down the board size to make the castle more playable? I just noticed that...

Hello,

Quote
Do you scale down the board size to make the castle more playable?

Indeed, the problem is the fact that the castle has to be playable, so i adapte as far as possible the size of the elements.

I build this castle with a plan supplied by the customer, so it's very difficult to follow  the plan while keeping the playability.

Let's go for the Donjon !

You can easy imagine the final aspect wich is the Caesar Tower at Provins in France (Tour César in French).

Only just found this thread. Your work is breathtaking. Your amazing skills at creating the castles is  actually surpassed by your superlative painting of them. The variety of basic colours you pick for your stonework alone is inspirational, but then the actual detailed painting the weathering, the variation of colour within each type of stone is pure genius. Hope this thread continues for a long, long time.

Hello !

Merci! Je ne parle pas beaucoup de Francais, mais je peux comprendre cette! Ce n'est pas comme blue foam ;)

Hi,

thank you for comments, that motivate me a lot ! :)

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, i'll answer as best i can.

i'll show you the finissions of the Donjon with "Plastiroc" a kind of clay with some plastic property...  Perfect to finish details and repair error :p

in order, with Plastiroc and without :

When this part of the work will be finished, i'll pass at the woodwork (doors, ground and beams for the roof). And i'll finish with the roof (and painting of course).

A stylized entrance will be realised at the base to show the wealth of the owner ;)

Hi !

Up with the making of the base and its pits anti-undermines

The cut part is kept because it will be used to fill pits to satisfy the playability

There will be a bridge also removable to allow to choose between the bridge or the filled pit.

Yes... for the moment :D  i'm sure i can make more, i just need a place where i can stock...

Wow Lapin, I am surprised that the build keeps going. Loving what you ate doing with the place. But will the construction ever end, or could this turn into a never ending story? (I know it's for a client so I guess it will wrap up eventually ;) ). But will it envelop your stables first? lol lol

I like the bridge, the coffee stirers work well.

let's go for a final idea about the final terrain !

First, the base with pits and without (pieces cuted to create pits were kept to realize this option).

with pits :

without pits :

buildings without pits :

A lot of work again, but soon first coats of paint !

Hi all,

i'm very late in the construction but i can, to have a good final it's allowed :p

First couch of paint.
Construction is not over but i had to know where i'm going !
It's just the under coat, after i need to make 3 coats to have the final depiction.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/856/p5r2.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/nsp5r2j)

The Workbench (Tidied up well...) :

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/138/lyvl.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/3ulyvlj)

A door will be duplicated to be stuck everywhere where we need a door (first stage on the tower for the walls for exemple...)

The mecanisms for the movements of the pikes and drawbridge  are the real challenge. all what i made is weak, so i'll must be take a similar mecanims of Lego or Playmobile that I shall adapt.

Here are the last part of the forteresse under construction.

It's 2 walls and 2 small towers wich will be artillery position.

These towers are made differently that the others, it's a single block sanded and sculpted.

:p  books on castle allows me to have this result, and visiting castle too. But thank you very much ! i try to have the most real possible final effect.

here is the installation of all the elements.
some details, a remake of one wall and let's go for painting.

when the paint will be over, i'll go for woodwork and roof.

The  barbican will coming after with the stone bridge.

Yes it oesmake me want a castle as well, but there is no way I could store something as magnificent (BIG) as this one (never mind the effort/skill/time involved).
However what about a 'low relief' version of the gateway? Yeah, I might be able to squeeze that in. Note to self, 'Start taking notes from this article'.

Started in 2013...

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/661/40onL7.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/id40onL7j)

The painting is ended (i guess)
And the végetation is in progress. A great three will be placed in the enclosure, and some flocking will ending the bushes.

 8) nicely done Lapin. Did you finish that castle groundwork yet - or was that it?

What's next? You should have plenty of time for more terrain before any Bret update comes out  :) :'(

Love, love, love this.  When your making the buildings do you have a floor plan in mind? or do you just build?

Hi,

thanks :p

Quote

When it's for me, i have indeed the plan in my mind, and sometimes i just build :p   but generally I have the inspiration by looking at Hitory books, Tv reports, or watching old houses/castles (In France we have really really a lot of castles or manors). The inspiration is unlimited.

Now, my next project is to make a "little" church inspired of Holy-Gudule Cathedral in Brussel
https://www.google.fr/search?q=cath%C3%A9drale+sainte+gudule&biw=1680&bih=916&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=dc43VfXvMo31aKvngeAJ&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ (https://www.google.fr/search?q=cath%C3%A9drale+sainte+gudule&biw=1680&bih=916&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=dc43VfXvMo31aKvngeAJ&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ)

 :D

The plan and some walls are already made ;)

I'm not sure to understand the question, but if you are talking about the Rock, it's a expansive foam polyurethane wich I recover of plaster.
For the walls, i'm just sculpting the foam with a pen.

Yes, i'm going to try the eye catcher, i'll probably stick a picture in the  background with some treatment to have a good result (new experiment :p)

Looks like you are quite a good ways along with Helms Deep. It looks nice. I always like seeing the different takes on how people build it. How big is HD including the Deeping Wall, 4ft or 6ft? How big a circumference is the core part of Helms Deep? Thanks.

the core part is about 60 cm wide , and the wall too, so 1 meter 20 for the whole. But it's possible to remove some parts of the wall if the table is'nt rather big :)

Post by: Lapin Rouge on September 07, 2015, 04:08:10 PM
Hi all !

i'm actually making a command for SAGA, it's a Table 1,20m x 1,50m , the keyword was : Flexible zones  so I made 4 parts with engraved roads allowing a big modularity.

It's a WIP, i had to make some clear brushing and vegetations + Artificial water.

I had to make a small fort, a zone of dolmen, and a pond and some little fence.

The theme is spring

The customer wants a section city which will be on the part with crossing X.
The small fort can go everywhere, its size is adapted to be able to be to install matter or on the table without overflowing on the road.
It's inspired of the Braveheart fort at the begining of the movie, but with stone bases.

Hi all !

i changed a lot of things for the ground, the customer didn't like the The too angular style of roads...  and want and wanted more leveling.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/661/S351xU.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/idS351xUj)

as you can see, the level of the sea was lowered to create a real height

The construction of the fort is ended, stays the paint :)

Door is openable as in the braveheart movie, all the levels of buildings are accessible.

Hi !

Thanks, and it is not finished :) ! I have just finished the main part works, I softened the slopes of all the hills to make them natural, now : place for the paint !

There will be also 5 elements containing trees and 5 more with different fences

The most hard for this model was to agree on the style of grounds with the customer :p  (3 time modified)

Hi all

Yes Lego bricks are very usefull In model making :D

Not a spectacular progress, but the main part is over, let's go to the paint job now !

The element city has paths which travels it with footprints and wood boards to protect from some mud, entrance of housing environment are with paving stones or small discreet staircases

All the hills have them slopes which were softened to give the most natural possible aspect. The vegetation will come to break what stays unatural.

- Furrows(grooves) + footprint and horses drawn in some filler

- Dark brown paint

- Brilliant varnish

The gloss varnish makes it look very wet, especially when used for the high traffic areas and when juxtaposed to the dry areas.

Hi all !

thanks :)  yes the mud looks like really wet, sometimes i do not dare to touch :p

I began the vegetation, it is going to have  3 more flockings in more different spread, if the effect mud remains too much pronounced I think of making a light dry brushing of a little more clear chestnut just to limit the difference between the "dry" elements and "the dustman"

Hmmm, i'm ending an Helm's Deep  for a customer, then i'll end a medieval Japan big scenery for a customer too, he began but prefers that I finish the work :)

Must be pictures next week !

At the same time, i'll soon propose in series a lot of little scenery for cheap but interessant i guess ;)

Exemple :
- Towers and walls dimensions old fortress GW for 15€/unity
- Houses (15cm x 8cm x H=10cm+5cm roof) 18th until contemporary period from 17€/unity
- Leguminous cultivated fields (10cm x 10cm) 7€/unity

The "catalog" is going to fill out periodically  but it's not the good section to speak about :p  if you have questions do not hesitate to PM me !

I'm working on my Cathedral too :)

It's ok, i used Liquitex Spray, it's an acrylic paint and there is not enought  solvent to damage the polystyren.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/908/JYYiv0.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p8JYYiv0j)

It's just a little part of the new commission for the SAGA table.

I have already sent a hill, fences (x10) and the 2 fields on the picture.

As you can see, a tower is in progress which the last two floors will be accessible.
A Roman style church will be created, sections of river, a lake and a waterfall are also planned...

Hi all !

let's continue the work

The tower will be an important element soon ended. the wooden part and the cob part are accessible and the roof is of course removable.

The inside is in a rustic theme

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/905/7INhd2.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p57INhd2j)

Rivers sections are in resin. The customer wanted depth so i changed.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/910/573UJV.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pa573UJVj)

The lake is deep and the resin is dry, soon a  scratchbuild boat taken in the resin will come to finalize this scenery before flocking and details.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/911/C8dMRo.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pbC8dMRoj)

the waterfall in wip ;) ....

I know you've probably got something for the waterfall, but have you thought about clear silicon sealer for the waterfall? What you do is run vertical lines in parallel on a piece of plastic card (or something the dried out silicon won't stick to). Use a tooth pick to rough it up. Drag it one direction. Once dry it can be cut and stuck in place with more silicon. You can also put touches of white silicon in there for foam.

Dried silicon removed from plastic card

And in place with varnish on it and the river....

The rustic bridge adapts itself to the river, and the waterfall too.

i use extruded polystyren and balsa wood. You can find materials in DIY

Quote

I'll build th whole Cathedral but it's not really Notre Dame, it's more a mix of a lot of french gothic cathedral.

The nested arches forming the cathedral portico are stunning! That's the sort of thing I'd kill to see available laser-cut and engraved from 3mm MDF. Sure, it would weigh a ton, but it would be precise, gorgeous, and (best of all) practically bulletproof.

There's a MakerSpace in town I think that I need to visit - a Gothic portico and broad stairs would make an impressive display-shelf backdrop and set...

Hi !

WIP of an order with to the program:

- Ruins

- Hills

- Rivers

- Forests

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/921/47kJvJ.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pl47kJvJj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/922/DZC5nz.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pmDZC5nzj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/924/kDHOog.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pokDHOogj)

Various sizes of ruins were typified classic,  there will be  vegetation and I have a last one whom I have to make, but in the basic idea that gives that.

Forests are classic with mix of  tree  and there will be bushes + small rocks (pebbles in trees were removed)

The bases of rivers are made.

Hills will come later.

The whole will be with the green flocking

Lovely stuff!  8) Have you ever considered using blu foam? It's denser and gives a better texture in the end.

Cracking! :-* Can I make a suggestion? If you use 1/16" solder for door knockers it means you can cut the ends straight. .....and it's easier to manipulate.

Hi all,

Little update with a personnal project.

It's a European medieval castle with the same base of the Japanese.

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/cluDiQ.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pncluDiQj)

There will be stone crenels but the covered way will be wooden.

The entrance will have a wooden drawbridge with a stone facade + crenels.

I shall add removable roofs on the entrance and the dungeon which will have platforms to be able to put figurines, and why not a machine for the dungeon.

Hi all,

a little update of the WIP

i painted the whole and i add the drawbridge, I will make the mechanism later.
The painting seems different between the slopes and the wall but it is due to the lighting, in real it is not nothing.

Hi all,  lets go for a little update

- Tuto for the mecanisme of the drawbridge

- some vegetation

- A door for the dongeon

We begin with a staging to realize the size and playability of the piece:

A small up with the last castle in date, almost finished it lacks a last layer of resin for the moats, and 2-3 small strokes of paint here and there.

The Keep is removable, the roof of the barbican also as well as its wooden floor. The drawbridge can be used with a winch system. And everything is removable from its base (moat).

Soon more pictures "on stage"

I think you forgot one detail (which I also forgot on my most recent ship project) somewhere aft of the mainmast there should be a windlass for hauling the equally huge ropes on a ship this size. I think there's space for it between the hatch and the cabin, should you feel so inclined.

Are you planning on building additional sections?

it is actually an order, so I only did what was requested, but you're right it's a detail that I could have offered.

For the moment he wants only these 2 parts, but if ever he wants the front, I will propose this idea!

thank you

Hello and thank you,

for water I use Prince August artificial water

https://www.prince-august.net/terrains-vieillisement/fx/eau-artificielle-transparente (https://www.prince-august.net/terrains-vieillisement/fx/eau-artificielle-transparente)

but i think Vallejo is the same

really very practical

HI all,

today, a new project...

i make the Bridge of Pont Da Barca in Portugal for a mate at work.

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/5iEAXU.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pn5iEAXUj)
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/cjPZqv.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pocjPZqvj)

So I decided to do everything in one block, which is not necessarily the best idea ...

I started with a length of 80cm and a width of 10cm, the dimensions were reworked in agreement with the customer because he wanted it to fit in a car and be massive.

Once everything was prepared and traced, I started by cutting the parts of the big arches as well as the smaller ones, the cutting being very difficult on 10 cm thick, I had to rework all the errors with clay.

the top is a tangle of herringbone paver, but what you see doesn't appeal to me and will be doing it all again by hand.

For the moment only one part is done, and little by little the rest will come :)

Hi all,

arrival of future lampposts and guardrail barriers. Very satisfied with the quality of the candelabra!

I will see how much the rest of the mechanism costs for the light, otherwise it will be without, if some have little advice I am interested!

The answer was it gets most of its rain in two weeks. Then it is a wide river.

Others are canal setups or where it's more that there's marsh that spreads out from the banks, so a lot of the buildings are built further back with more expendable structures built down along the banks themselves.

Hello,

Ooh, that's going to need a big river!
indeed, i'll make a large river, maybe with epoxy, but if it's to much i'll use the glue technic.

in this precise case, the bridge is 160 meters long, for 5m wide, as the model was going to be too big, I adapted the dimensions. Otherwise it is indeed a very long bridge.

Here is the progress of this Sunday, I wanted to engrave the remaining stones but it will be for this week, the structure is almost finished anyway.

Final assembly before painting!

In 3 steps:

-gluing of the set

-implementation of a layer of cob to simulate the mud and solidify the bases

-sanding

Thank you, it is not finished yet but I will try to give as much realism as possible.

Quote

indeed it is empty in the current state of things, but there will be the barriers and the candelabra at the end, as well as 2 sculptures in the center of the bridge (as on the real one).

the barriers and candelabras are visible in the last photo.

here is the progress with the painting little by little:

several shades of brown and green (seaweed) for the river bed
several brown and black washes for the rest of the building and the road

To be continued: last masonry, paint touch-ups, water in epoxy resin and vegetation (3 small work sessions normally)

Hello everyone,

while waiting for the end of the bridge, here is the last castle to date.

Very simple, it was mainly made to test some techniques 😛, rather satisfied with the rendering.
Removable keep, roof of the barbican also, drawbridge usable with its mechanism provided for this purpose.

I had made a base with a moat, but I removed it, some defects in the resin and a height which was not satisfactory to me meant that I did not keep it.

Gosh! Very impressive. Which sort of gaming are you going to use it for? Or is it a display piece?

it's a display piece for a client.

it's the bridge of his town.

here is the continuation of a castle under construction, I worked on the cob, I rather like the rendering

Hi all,

I'm back after quite a while to show the progress of castle number 7

For me it is almost finished, I will add a tad of vegetation, paint corrections and perhaps coats of arms / flag coat of arms to bring everything to life, as well as some furniture.
