A few of us from the South East England chapter of the LAF are getting together for a late medieval game on Friday.

Here's the table - a peaceful corner of the English countryside...

Cabbages grow peacefully in the fields...

A rider ambles down a country lane wondering where everybody is...

Beside the duck pond, stout yeoman discuss the cabbage harvest...

The village slumbers...

A man takes his dog rabbiting on the heath...

A woodsman crosses the burbling brook by a rickety footbridge...

All too soon, this rural idyll will be shattered by the tramp of boots, the thunder of hooves, the clash of steel and the glint of sunlight on armour...

Watch this space  ;)

On Thursday evening I shall be addressing my troops.  Having been bested by the dastardly Lancastrians on two prior occasions, I am expecting better from them.

On Thursday evening I shall be addressing my troops.  Having been bested by the dastardly Lancastrians on two prior occasions, I am expecting better from them.

Good idea, make an example out of a couple of them, snap off a spear or even better break off an arm or a leg. Tell them to expect worse if they lose. >:D

How big is the table??

2m x 1.2m (so a little over 6'x4' in old money) It's gonna be crowded lol

That terrain is stunning, did you scratchbuild the houses?

No, they're just a couple of the cheap and cheerful Conflix buildings.

Beautiful terrain as usual.
I can't help but notice that there is an absence of fly tipping though in this part of the English countryside. No straw palliasses discarded in hedge bottoms with those hard to dispose of abacuses, the scourge of the modern Medieval era. Not to mention a pile of old cart wheels :D lol

Wars of the Roses battle fought yesterday.

The Yorkists advancing from the north divided into two battles, the right flank under Damas the left flank under Silent Invader. Total muster: 128 foot, 20 horse, two guns with 8 crew.

The Yorkist deployment along the northern edge of the field.

The Lancastrians advancing from the south in three battles, the right commanded by Jimbibbly, the Centre by Malamute and the left by myself. Total muster: 123 foot, 27 horse, two guns with 8 crew.

The Lancastrian deployment along the southern edge of the field.

Lancastrian artillery commanding the bluff with a view across the river

Yorkist artillery directly opposite on a low knoll. Looks like an artillery duel is in prospect.

The right of the Yorkist line – mercenary cavalry, Burgundian guns, the tawny & cream livery of Henry Pierce of Hackneye, and Milanese mercenary foot.

The centre of the Yorkist line – the apple and cherry sours livery of Edward Woods of Hockleye and the powerful retinue of Sir Edward Mortimer of Rocheforde

The left of the Yorkist line – the mercenary company of the Red Feather and the prickers and scurrers of Tyrell of Halstede…

Strangely, the Lancastrian commanders have subverted military theory by grouping their cavalry in the centre of their line facing the impassable fast-flowing section of the river, and placing large bodies of infantry on either flank… Hmmm…

On the Lancastrian left, the Howard cavalry are thrown forward at once to sieze the western footbridge…

Whilst on the Lancastrian right, the Tenchley cavalry race for the eastern ford…

As their longbows follow up, the Howard horse take shelter behind a spinney as the Yorkist guns begin to rain stone cannon balls on their advance, slaying Sir Thomas Howard’s page…

Meanwhile (reverse angle shot!) the Tenchley cavalry meet a nasty surprise as they splash across the ford… Mortimer has raced forward his large body of infantry to greet them. A fierce hand to hand engagement ensues…

Sir Robert Tenchley of Staffhurst urges his men forward from the rear – this did not stop him becoming an early casualty of enemy longbow fire from across the river…

The Howard infantry are over the western footbridge and advancing on that strategically important cabbage patch…

Under the covering fire of the Lancastrians’ Savoyard guns high on the bluff, their mercenary Scots pikemen cross the western ford…

The Howard foot bravely advance on the cabbage patch, taking heavy casualties from the Burgundian guns to their front all the while…

Little do they know the strength of the reception committee that awaits them in the sunken lane behind the hedgerows and fences…

Meanwhile, the Yorkists throw forward the fast-moving prickers and scurrers of Percy Tyrell of Halstede…

The Mortimer longbowmen of sieze the vital heights of Middle Hill…

As the Scots pikemen on the north bank of the river advance towards Middle Hill, they are faced by the dispiriting sight of the Tenchley cavalry, minus their Lord, fleeing back along the south bank to where they started from…

Brave Scottish fellows, they push on regardless…

Meanwhile, Sir Thomas Howard unleashes his cavalry through the cabbage patch against the men of Hackneye defending the fence. This proved a costly mistake – especially for Sir Thomas, who promptly bought it! Yes, still early in the day, and already the commanders of two of the three Lancastrian battles are dead! Going well then…

Luckily, the Howard foot and the Stafford bills of the Duke of Buckingham (handily arrived just in time from eBay) are rushing forward to reinforce the desperate situation…

The Scots pause to assess their chances of dislodging the Mortimer longbows from the top of Middle Hill… An inquisitive cow looks on.

The battle of the cabbage patch is joined in earnest, as the battered Howard cavalry give way to their supporting infantry…

The eastern end of the field. Not quite sure what’s going on here… Bibbly seems to have thrown his forces into a defensive perimeter… The Foyles of Crowhurst at bay…

The host of Mortimer of Rocheforde tramp across the eastern ford…

Title: Re: Medieval Battle Royale III - coming soon :)

The view from atop Middle Hill… The Tenchley foot have now forded the river to support the Scots…

A lone Tenchley horseman turns to fight a desperate rearguard action against the prickers of Percy Tyrell of Halstede

The cabbage patch is swinging the Lancastrians’ way as the defending men of Hackneye are gradually whittled down by arrow and bill… Lone surviving horseman Ralph de Corlay keeps the Howard standard flying…

At the opposite end of the field, the Yorkist company of the Red Feather swarm across the eastern bridge where they are met by Lancastrian horse, led by Sir John Osney of Outwood.

The fierce running cavalry action along the river…

Bird’s-eye view of the eastern half of the field as the battle unfolds…

The thorny hedge held in the Yorkist centre by the doughty men of Edward Woods of Hockleye

Henry Tudor tries to sneak by the hamlet without being noticed…

Having seen off the last survivors of the men of Hackneye, who turn and flee the field, the brave (eBay) billmen of Buckingham, storm onward to seize the Yorkist guns, driving off and slaying their  Burgundian crews. This, right under the noses of the Yorkists’ mercenary cavalry. Suicide surely!

Meanwhile the rascally Milanese turn and advance down the sunken lane to fall on the exhasuted remnants of the Howard foot in their hard-won cabbage patch…

Sure enough, on the knoll, the Mercenary horse make short work of Buckingham’s remaining bills…

But in a sudden turn of fortune, the Hockleye defenders of the thorny hedge in the centre of the field, are now assailed by a large Lancastrian body, who unleash a withering rain of longbow fire against them…

In short, it’s all getting very confusing…

The Yorkist commander is alarmed to see the remnants of his mercenaries streaming back across the eastern bridge…

On the Lancastrian left, the reserve is committed – the cavalry of the deBrasseys of Tandridge and a company of Flemish mercenaries are pushed forward across the river…

The obligatory beer bottle shot…

And still Ralph de Corlay holds the cabbage patch alone! (He died shortly afterwards).

With the Flemings in support, the deBrassey horse smash into the mercenary cavalry of the Yorkists.

And that is pretty much game over at the western end of the field.

The Yorkists defenders have been worn down to virtually nothing by the relentless Lancastrain onslaught, while the Lancastrians still have reserves to bring forward and roll up the flank.

In the centre, the Lancastrians have taken the hedge and the lane, and it’s only at far the eastern end of the field that the Yorkists have any strength left, with Mortimer of Rocheforde holding the upper hand in the battle around the hamlet.

A graceful Yorkist concession shortly follows and the Lancastrians generously decide to spare the survivors summary execution.

That table is delightful!  No, no, it's brilliant!  No, no, no, no, there are no words in the human language to describe its perfection.  So I'm forced to make one up.  And I'm going to do that here:

It's scrumtrulescent!

Amazing stuff!

@captain blood: the horses you've painted look spectacular! I'm even more impressed by them after seeing this pictures! Very smooth looking transitions.

What rules did you use? I gather they're very much of a move and fight each single figure skirmishy kind.

True visual feast - figures and terrain in (top class) harmony.
Thanks for sharing - very inspirational stuff.  :)

Thanks gents :)

I should point out that most of the Yorkist army was provided by Silent Invader, so he shares the plaudits on the painting front.

What rules did you use? I gather they're very much of a move and fight each single figure skirmishy kind.

Yes, they are a 'grand scale' skirmish set, 'By Arrow, Bill and Sword', written by Steve (Silent Invader) and available from his webstore as a free download...
See this thread for more details and rules discussion: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=48144.0

Truth be told, although we did use a few movement trays, a skirmish-style game involving 300+ individually-based figures like this, does require an awful lot of lifting and shifting of little men!
The upside is that it looks so much more realistic to see figures bunched into natural groupings, rather than all those improbably straight lines of multi-figure bases beloved of 'traditional' wargamers...  ::)

Congrats, Captain! This reminds me of the old Peter Gilder battle pictures of times long gone, although both terrain and paintwork have clearly been taken into another age.  Perhaps one advice for the defeated: instead of drinking Czech beer, try this dark Hungarian one next time; the name is almost identical, but it guarantees victory, I can assure you it ain't called "demon" without reason!   lol

Quite.

A happy medium might be the movement trays from Warbases (http://www.warbases.co.uk/#/dux-brittaniarum/4566290181), who do some more irregular looking ones. They apparently make them to order too.

 :D

Just to add, the way that the rules play out is that in multiplayer games with different engagements taking place all over the table it doesn't need to be a case of strict IGOUGO.  For example, during one turn both me, Malamute and Captain Blood took our activations at the same time, with me attacking Jimbibbly and Malamute, while Malamute and Captain Blood attacked Damas.  So while there can be a lot of individual minis to move and trays can really help especially in the early stages, it doesn't have to be the case that players 2-4 or whatever twiddle their thumbs while player 1 carefully positions each mini.  ;)

We did make one change to the rules, which was to improve the effectiveness of the longbow but I'll cover that in the rules thread .  :)

Absolutely awe-inspiring stuff.  :o :-*Who needs a playstation or computer when you can have this?!
Obviously, some treachery has taken place to ensure this Lancastrian victory. lol

Not sure I've seen this in England! Looks rather tasty though, so I'll keep an eye out for it  ;)

I've just noticed in this picture I took, the Future Wars collective are keeping an eye on the medieval action from the safety of their display cabinet  lol

I particularly like the idea of Lara Croft watching a Wars of The Roses encounter  :D

How did I miss the second set of pictures? Amazing!

Even though you have, what was it, some 300 miniatures? on a fairly regular table size it doesn't seem too crowded, I like that.
