With the aid of my tech savvy gaming buddy Jay, of "Jay's Wargaming Madness" http://jayswargamingmadness.blogspot.com/ (http://jayswargamingmadness.blogspot.com/), I have created my very own blog focused mostly on my hairbrained attempt to kitbash my way into medieval wargaming in a Westeros setting.
I welcome your comments, thoughts, suggestions, and feedback there. Piccies of my forces to date tomorrow.
Still waiting on those Claymore Castings to make their way to California.
See it here:

Hey Doowopapocalypse, that's a great link and exactly the spirit of support I'm looking for! Looks like he's in a circle of German gamers I've been following for some time.
Thank you!!
-
Very much looking forward to seeing this progress. I love all things ASoIaF!
-
This looks great! But surely it belongs in the Fantasy board...
-
Hammers, that's a fair comment that I'll leave to the mods. Here's my logic for posting it here:
- I'll be using historical models for this setting and I want opinions and advice from historical gamers.
- I'll be using historical rules with no fantastical elements.
It's essentially a historical game that just alternative history and not really fantasy - i.e. magic and mythical creatures.
Again, I'll let the mods decide.
-
Strictly speaking it is fantasy... but as it's a bit divorced from WH, LotR and anything with Mages, Goblins, Orcs and
all that shit what have you, I'd personally prefer to see it here. Having said that I think the same about Bruegelburg too and that's been consigned to Fantasy.
Maybe we need a "Fantasy (the hard stuff) Board".
;)
-
Very interesting... I'm a big fan of Game of Thrones, although I prefer the books to the TV series. I shall follow with interest.
I'm with Arlequin - although GOT is an invented world, the fantasy elements are pretty minimal (okay, apart from the dragons - but they're really bit-part players in the cycle so far).
It's really just an alternative medieval setting. Not that different from me making up a lot of fictitious Lords and retinues for Wars of The Roses... :)

...and white walkers. And giants on mammoths. And green fire. ;)
I am being facetious. It is no skin off my nose at all.
-
Okay, I forgot about those... :)
-
... there's a dwarf too. Just the one... just sayin' :)
-

They're just shorter, stronger humans - sometimes with beards. Didn't you see The Hobbit? ;)
-
lol
An actual dwarf does not make it fantasy.
Emilia Clarke on the other hand... ;)

Yes... so wrong but so right. :D
-
For green fire read Greek fire
For Mammoths read shaggy elephants (they're cold bless em!)
For Giants read... very large people(?)
For Dragons read... Dragons
For undead read...unstoppable levy reinforcements
For Others read...Others
OK I'll grant you the last few have little or no historical equivalents, but do any of you lot recall Wargames Research Group's attempt to do a Lord of the Rings adaptation of their early WRG rules called 'The Lidless Eye'? Such things are doable with a little creativity.
Captain Blood is right. This is an excellent framework around which to accumulate Pseudo-Historical shiny new toys to game with. I'm having a hell of a fun time converting barbarians, celts, saxons and vikings into Wildlings and Ironborn and Feudals, HYW and WOTR into bannermen. And yes I do have a Giant and a mammoth.

Excellent! Are those the Fireforge cloaks? If so, they work better on the Perry WOTR figures than the do on the Fireforge knights! ;D

Affirmative x 2!

Yay :)
-
Oh lordy, that means I'm going to have to get some Fireforge knights as well as the Perrys!?
-
Those look great, I might have to order a box of knights tonight!
What size are those bases? 40mm?

Glad to contribute to someone else's impulse buying!
Yes, 40mm Renedra.

Like what you are doing with those Lannisters, even though I really dislike them from the books.

Yeah, they're dickish. But Tyrion's fun.
-
I don't think they're meant to be too likeable. lol The boo-hiss villains that everyone loves to hate. But Tyrion isn't so bad, for a Lannister, and stick with Jaime for a bit...
-
But Tyrion's fun.
Speaking of the little one, anyone found a suitable miniature for him? I was thinking of using one of GW's hobbits, but I'm not totally convinced.

You could possibly look to something like this guy from reaper -

Liking the look of this!! I've been playing with some conversions mixing the Fireforge stuff and perry's they do fit in very well.

When it comes down to it, they're all a bunch of nobs (not just the Lannisters) but I think that is why, personally, I like the books, as they're all more Human or believable; all of them having sides that are pretty repulsive, with their own dark episodes some darker than others, whilst having their own good sides.
-
I've used a couple of 'big haired' heads from the Bretonnian sprues grafted onto an armoured WOTR body for Jaime Lannister and a jupon wearing Perry WOTR figure for Tyrion. Tyrion has been 'modified' as per previous threads with considerable success, but they are currently WIP...
-
Okay, time for some Northmen...

They look great! What are the donor parts??
-
I see Perry WOTR and Gripping Beast Hirdmen parts in there - I have some very similar assemblages...
-
Also some Fireforge parts if I'm not mistaken especially the first body on the left
-
They look great! What are the donor parts??
Yes, as called out above - Fireforge bodies, GB Hirdman heads, Perry WotR arms.
-
Finally received my Claymore Castings Scots pike. I'm very pleased with them (a few headswaps nothwithstanding) and I'll order the mounted and foot knights in the near future. I really like them.

I didn't have time to set up the light box. Just shot them on my paint table.
Some further thoughts over at the blog-thingy: http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/ (http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/)
Moving it along...

Looking good, the claynore minis are a real treat, and very nice to paint, like then alot.
-
It all seems to be coming together very well. :)
-
Am loving the Claymore figs and the Fireforge conversions

A old friend, who happens to be a skilled graphic artist, has kindly agreed to help me create banner sheets for this project. I just uploaded them over in blog-town.

Thank you, Mr. J. But I anticipate a fearful case of the slows when it comes to painting.
We shall see...

Wow, those banners looks great!

I like these - just a shame I've hand done all my own! :? lol

No other than wearing black. That's their thing. They forego all sigils and allegiances and don the black.

Aye, that. Here's their coat of arms. ;)

Oh yeah, Suhke, that's the biznez!! Nice work with both the greenstuff detailing and the banners!
-
Your banners look excellent! Really love them. Are they hand painted?
-
Indeed Mr J and I have all the main Northern factions represented - just not enough standard bearer figures at present, though I'm making a start on the Greyjoys and the Ironborn
-
Great stuff. Any Mormonts upcoming?

Minor update over in bloglandia:

After weeks of working on my thesis and business travel, I'm moving my project forward again - not least through the efforts of talented friends. Artwork for the banners and shield transfers has been completed and, last weekend I got in my first game of Dux Britanniarum (using War of the Ring models as proxies, of all things!). I'm still stymied in finishing Stark and Greyjoy forces for another month until Fireforge releases the foot Templars and Teutonic knights.
Three pointed banners will be for Rob/Ned/Lord Commander, two pointed pennants for noble sub-commanders like Greatjon or Rickard Karstark, the rest for within units.
See Lannister and Greyjoy here:

They look great, can't wait to se them on some models!
I really need to continue on with my own project, this might have been the push I needed, thanks!

Yes, push on, Tomek!! :)

Really great job ! Can we buy this banners ?

Well, well, well. Will wonders never cease.
The muse is upon me once again after almost 3 years. Coming back here and seeing all your fantastic work has played it's part.
Honorable mention to Neil/Sukhe_Bator for some commiseration and mutual encouragement.
I've refreshed my blog with a down payment of my intentions with the hopes of holding myself accountable and building some momentum.

A Mordor Rampant AAR and perhaps some photos of my recent terrain efforts over the weekend.
TDG
Cheers fellow adventurers!
-
Welcome back to the blog!
-
Thanks, Commissar Taggart! "Number Six!"
And thank you Capitano Sangue, for the transfer to a more appropriate board! More to come later today or tomorrow.
-
Okay, I had much grander ambitions to post some work in progress this weekend but here's a teaser: Greyjoy elite (Lion Rampant foot knights)
I need to relearn how to scale these photos in Photobucket.
More to come as I knock the rust off my photography (used iPhone on these as it was getting late), Lightroom and Photobucket skillz.
Speaking of knocking rust off, I have not painted an actual figure in a couple a three years or so. It's less like "falling off a bicycle" and more like "use it or lose it". I had to work hard to get into a "growth mindset" and focus on learning and re-learning. Generally pleased as a warm up exercise.
With all the talent in these forums, it's easy to get self-conscious or intimidated. I keep reminding myself a) just enjoy the creativity of it and b) compare only against myself with an eye to getting better.
-
I hear ya...every time I take a few months off from painting I have to pick the first 2-3 "sacrificial" figures when I get back into painting. lol
-
Very nice Wade. That works very well. Suitably menacing >:D
-
He looks good! I really like that you are not going the straight "Ironmen are Vikings" route. :)
-
A couple of Stark tests (household foot serjeants):
One of the things I had to re-learn is that white is a tough pigment to get to look smooth. Many thin coats...
-
Looking good so far... I'm loving the colour on the inside of the pelt cloak on your Stark - so often overlooked. When my Mum once cured some rabbit skins the resulting skin side was a lot paler/greyer, but I guess it depends on the skins and the curing technique. I'm thinking ahead to my Boltons >:D
I agree with you DG about painting, I'm still wrestling with acrylics years on after moving from a lifetime using Revell/Humbrol enamels... Getting the tones right, sometimes just getting even coverage can be tricky. I find whatever colour I use just adding a tad of white helps the consistency and opacity no end. It doesn't help much on white though! :?
I like the 'waterproof' look on the cloak of your Ironborn. I am an unashamed Ironborn=Vikings man, but having discovered only recently that I only have the equivalent of 12pts worth of GB Vikings for 'Lion Rampant' AND I have a surplus of Fireforge foot to build, I may well be shamelessly following suit with some armoured Hybrids... ;)
-
very nice figures :-* :-* :-*
-
Well,
Here is my 24 point Lannister retinue that I am having painted while I work on Greyjoy retinue in parallel.
More details about this over at my blog.
http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/ (http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/)
Updates on my Greyjoys and some terrain projects soon!
-
Well, well. A first unit of elite Ironborn for my Greyjoy retinue plus Victarion and Asha.
My wifi at home and Photobucket are giving me fits, so I'll leave it at this and count myself lucky.

Next in queue...
6 of 12 Ironborn warriors or "Fierce Foot"
And, 6 scouts or "Bidowers"

Woo! They work a treat :-* lovely. Would love to see close ups of Asha and Victarion... They look brilliant.
And the new figures all look great too. Are the bowmen metal? I don't see any plastic parts I recognise there... Either that or you have been particularly ingenious with your kitbashing!
Well done. Coming on apace now :)
-
Holy moly they look fantastic! :-* Those banners are really lovely! You got me really jealous there... ::)
-
These are looking great DG!
-

Thank you for the kind words. The bowmen are from West Wind Productions Arthurian line, Saxon bodies with hooded Pict heads. I chose these almost 3 years ago when I started this project. If I had to do it over again, I might have gone with the Conquest early medieval archers. I'm trying not to get distracted by over-thinking.
There are some somewhat closer shots of Asha and Victarion off their command sabots on my blog-thingy.
http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/ (http://dilettantegamer.blogspot.com/)
I'll try to get more. Victarion is a GW Dark Elf Corsair special character, chosen for the kraken helm, obviously. He's wearing a sea dragon cloak that I didn't rightly know what to to with. I considered filling all the scales smooth with putty and making it just another oilskin cloak like the rest of the reavers. I ended up opting for green scales with gold highlights, presumably from some exotic creature around the Summer Isles. I'm not wild about it, but it works well enough for now and I don't want to get bogged down agonizing over any particular miniature. I need to move the whole retinue forward. And behind that, the Starks. And behind that...
-
very nice blog
-
I'm loving all the squiddly diddlies. I like the archer figures too...
-
Well, ever-so-quietly, I'm returning to this project and hobbydom in general after a 9-month digression into real life preoccupations.
Need to photograph and post the Lannisters I had painted to speed this over-ambitious project forward.
-
Hurrah :)
Back in the saddle.
