Title: Source for Plains Indians Appearances?
Post by: the trojan bunny on February 10, 2013, 06:18:36 AM
Can anyone recommend some good sources (whether online or printed) for info about the tribe specific appearances of the plains indians? In other words, tribe specific clothing, warpaint etc. I have heard "Mystic Warriors of the Plains" is a worthwhile book to track down. I also have some Ospreys and general books on the subject of the plains tribes. Looking for much more appearance specific sources.

Thanks!

Just type Plains Indians on your web search. You will get plenty to look at. I do have a number of books at home, but am on at work & will need to make a list to post later.

Mystic warriors of the plains is THE book to try and get hold of. I am not sure if it is in print anymore.

As Herbyf says Google images by Frederick Remington, Frank McCarthy and Howard Terping and you will have all the references you need.

I wonder if the George Catlin (spelling edit) books would be useful?

Gracias,

While expensive, Osprey of course had a few selections - one simply called PLAINS WARS (INDIANS?) etc.

This is an interesting sight especially if you hunt through the photos and on line collections sections.

Aren't they making an appearance at Carnegie Hall next weekend?

 lol

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Regarding George Catlin's images - good for early 19th century but not so much for later in the century.  And for those who don't know, Magua's face paint in Last of the Mohicans was a direct "lift" from one of Catlin's paintings of a plains Indian.

Point taken.

Depends on when your games are set.

Most of mine involve the Spanish and end before 1820...
