Ok, as promised i've got a new project which i will be commissioning a whole bunch of figures for.
Although this is a personal project, and not a business venture I'm sure I will have some spare - the proceeds of which I will plough back into commissioning more greens.
If you are interested in any of the minis I post pictures of on here, mention so on the thread, and I will let you know as and when i have some available.
I'm not basing my figures on any specific background, but rather hope to produce some figures for my own project that others may also find a use for. I haven't even got a proper name for the project yet - Space Opera refers to the genre, but someone already owns the name "Space Opera" for miniatures.
First up will be the military - i'm thinking about 3 types:
1) Garrison/Security troops - relatively lightly armed, no real body armour - a cheap way of holding territory but not equipped for a full frontal assault.
2) Assault troops - full body armour, hand weapons, blasters, knives etc - ideal for dealing with sentries, boarding actions
3) Elite troops - some sort of bio suit, full helmet, better weapons. These are the guys you send in when the local garrison have lost control.
Once i've got a decent bunch of military figures, I will also commission some civvie types, again pretty generic (sorry no lasersword wielding monks).
If you've any suggestions, please stick them on the following thread (remember i'm after generic types of characters not specifics from specific films/books etc)

sculpted by Ian Mountain - will have swoppable heads - the officer also has a communicator option.
Have gone with tabs rather than integral bases for this project as I think they will go well with the likes of Fenris' sulacco bases.
Will post some size comparison photos once i've got some cast up.

Impressive. .... Most impressive. ;)

Cheers mate - just the start!
:D

I like those and could be tempted… ;)
It'll be interesting to see what else you have lined up.
-
Can't see the pictures (It's the multiple (?!) firewalls at this end, not your end,) so I will check when I get home.
Concept sounds really good, I will have to think a bit before I reply more, other than "Space Cops"/"SWAT" fit in where?
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Wow! ;D Very tempting, hopefully at least some of them will be available for us mere mortals at some point.
-
going slotta tabs is the way to go. Also found out recently if the fig can fit into a box with a hight no greater than 20mm its is about a 70% saving in postal costs. Found all that out the hard way myself yesterday. ::)
Is it going ot be like 70's and 80's tv inspired uniforms?
So 15 mm :o figures may have an economic advantage not foreseen? o_o
lol
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Well .... These will be 28 mm or thereabouts
lol
-
Is it going ot be like 70's and 80's tv inspired uniforms?
It's difficult not to be inspired by a whole variety of sources - on Frothers I've already been accused of producing heavily-armed UPS delivery men ...
:D
-
Nah.
UPS driver don't wear boots like that.
;)

Those kind of remind me of the crew of the C57D from Forbidden Planet. Where are the grizzled/mad scientist, his beautiful daughter, and their robot servant?

Those kind of remind me of the crew of the C57D from Forbidden Planet.
And here I was congratulating myself on some "generic" henchmen.... It really is impossible to come up with something that hasn't been done in some way shape or form..... lol
not my intention, and I don't have any plans for a Robbie the Robot, but a great film nevertheless.....{goes off to buy it on iTunes}

No shoulder pads I promise....

These look great. Looks like they would go well with the Crooked Dice Time Lift guys. Will be watching this closely.

Yep. Fine for people who like that sorta thing I'm sure. Personally, I have to say "meh", aesthetics-wise. Sculpts look good tho (no ham fists for one 8)) so maybe the more military types will be of more interest.

As and when they are made.... ;)
These are the first four, but will keep you posted as I get more (and when I have cast up).....remember this is a personal project, not a business, so although I will have some spare I'm not working to a timetable.

Assault troops
Full body armour, hand weapons, blasters, knives etc - ideal for dealing with sentries, boarding actions
Sculpted by Kev White, they will have 6 head options and an alternative gun option (the knives are for the lefthand).
Similar size to the other 28mm minis.

I will have some of these available, so if you are interested please stick your name on this thread and i will contact you when they are ready.
I plan on getting some conversions made of the garrison troopers, so may be a little while before I have some available, but Im sure you will agree that they are well worth waiting for.... :)

Nice mate, any reason you went for bare heads rather than helmets etc

Well, depending on the price tag attached I'm interested. Only in the assault troops, mind you (see my previous post in the thread).
-
I like the new Kev White ones too! Definitely interested. Yep, count me in. :D
-
Love those assault troops. Would be interested in getting some of them.
-
Beautiful sculpts. Very interested in getting all of them for my upcoming sci fi project.
-
Nice mate, any reason you went for bare heads rather than helmets etc
Yup, its what I wanted
:D
I might do a helmet for the "Assault" troopers at some point but I like them bare-headed.
The "Elite" troopers will have a fully enclosed environmental suit.... ;)
-
It shouldn't be too hard to replace the heads. Seeing as they are separate bitz to start with...
-
Yes I am interested in these =)
-
beautiful Minis i'm in for these as well as the first ones, and probably the next ones lol
-
Nice looking models, and very useful. I'd like some too.
-
Aye not bad there Matt at all.
-
I would also be interested in some of these Both sets for an upcoming Sci-fi project I have planned for next year
-
I think I would be interested in both types of trooper shown so far (please!)
-
Very nice! :-*
Depending on the price, I'd be in for some Assault Troopers please! 8)
-
amazing ! you wait years for "not Dune esque" minis and two lines appear at once !!!
would be interested in the assault troopers myself...
-
While I said it on FB already, definitely interested in these!
-

I hadnt thought of that but what a happy coincidence as I appear to have acquired a number of Revell Dune Ornithopter kits that are just the right size.....

Hei,
I'm also interested i the assault troops, sign me in ;)

I bought one years ago to do a Dune project. I got lucky and only paid $40.
Akky I'm really interested in purchasing some of your figs from this project. I got the girls you had done from your BSG project and they are great. Let me know when they're available. Thanks.

Thanks mate (and everyone that has expressed an interest so far).
As with the BSG project I'm using sculptors that i think are ideally suited to the genre and I think it shows in the end result.
In terms of timescale, the plan is this:
The 3 Kev White "assault" troopers, plus the 4 Ian Mountain "Garrison" troopers will go in a master mould along with another green that Ian is currently working upon - this will give me a whole bunch of masters. Rather than just make these available, I've asked Ian to do some conversions from the basic poses, to give me a broader group of figures - meaning you get quality AND quantity!
:)
As with all my projects, I'll be using Griffin to make the moulds/castings - they arent the cheapest, but they are excellent at what they do.
I'd hope to get everything off to Griffin in the next week or so, and then ask Ian to work upon the conversions - I will of course keep you all posted on progress on this thread.
The next stage, once the troopers are cast is to work upon characters - I've already got plans for various types: Leaders, Command staff, Religious types, Assassins, Smugglers....the list goes on.
-
…meaning you get quality AND quantity!
You spoil us!

Exciting stuff! Can't wait to see them!
-
I should probably add that where possible I'll make the heads interchangeable, for extra variety - the feedback from the WW1 Russian Dwarf project was that this was what the majority of gamers preferred, making it easier to customise your minis without it becoming too fiddily (generally speaking I can't stand multi-part figures, but with a recess between the shoulders, heads are easy to do).
In the case of the "assault" troopers there are currently 6 heads on a sprue for the 3 basic troopers - all of the "garrison" troopers heads will also be swappable, and I will also add some additional head variants so you can mix and match. The majority of the characters will also have this option.
I'd also point you in the direction of the Crooked Dice head sprues, which seeing as Ian Mountain sculpted many of their range will mean that you can have an ape or bug-head trooper if you want.
:)
-
I agree about multi-part, on paper it looks like a great solution, in reality not so. Heads work well, as do other bits like something on a belt, or a back pack... maybe even a shoulder pad. ;D
-
There is some great stuff going on in this here thread :)
my question is... are you planning on getting any sci-fi Dwarfs sculpted for this?
Maybe equipped the same as the last human sculpts... and possibly sculpted by the same sculptor? 8)
-

No mate I won't be getting Kev to sculpt some sci-fi dwarves - I'll leave that to him via Hasslefree seeing as he already has that market cornered ....
I am toying with some non-human creatures though.... ;)

Shame about the Dwarf side of things but I look forward to the non-humans :)

Completely missed this thread before. Definately interested in acquiring some minis when they are available. 8)
-
Very interessting, i'm interessted in the assault troopers, they look very bad ass.
-
I'll second (or fifteenth) the interest! Both Garrison and Assault types are of my interest! :-*
-
Posting for interest! Project's looking great so far, wish I had disposable funds right now!
-
Hi Matt,
Very Interested in these! Thanks.
Best Regards,
Howard
-
It's difficult not to be inspired by a whole variety of sources - on Frothers I've already been accused of producing heavily-armed UPS delivery men ...
:D
Well, in the future, UPS delivery men can be like these ones... ;)
Interesting idea for a game...
Very nice figures, very interesting! I would like to know when I can buy them.
-
Why oh why does there have to be so many great looking miniatures in the pipework right now?
Those Mountain Security types are especially nice and could see multiple uses...
-
Three cheers for Akula!
Hip hip hurray! I second that! :-)
-
Great stuff!
Please let me know if/when available for purchase.
Cheers,
Paul K.

While the assault on the pocketbook is troubling, the real pain is missing something in 'flood'. Fortunately, I'm sure we can all depend on Akula to keep us aware. ;)

Great looking greens - watching this one with interest as I can always use some trooper flunkies for my bad guys ;)
Movie or series type dude in tank for this project?

Well my own project is more of a generic space-opera type project rather than related to a specific movie, or book..... but with regards to the film you are eluding to, I'm a traditionalist at heart.... ;)
-
I certainly like the look of those garrison troops and I'm up for some smugglers and so on.
-
The garrison troopers are grand - well, so are the others, but the stiff uniforms of the former - and the hats - make them very useful in some interesting ways. I second the Dr Who potential, although Space Opera would be my main use.
I'd love to see one of these painted actually. I'd go for light grey. Or rifleman green. Or sand? Blue?
-
Interested in these. Nice work by two of my favourite sculptors.
-
Would be interested in seeing some non-military types, to be honest.
Smugglers sounds good.
-

Smugglers sounds good.
Understandable - there will be non-military types on the list. The reason for focussing upon a chunk of military types initially is that it makes sense in terms of getting the moulds made. The figures todate are just a fraction of the military variants I'm getting made - they will give me some critical mass, and then allow me to start upon some civvies.... ;)
-
Sounds like a sensible plan.
:)
-
I'd be definitely interested in a set of the garrison troopers.
-
This is the fifth pose from Ian Mountain.
Ian is also working on some additional kit for me, including some more weapons - once these are done, everything will be put in a master mould, and then work will begin on a whole bunch of conversions from the basic poses, including the assault troopers that Kev White made.

This one is really nice, and has a lot of "aplications" in a Future Wars game. I want him!
-
And he even has a nice frown - excellent! 8)
-
Akula, these are very nice figures but if i might ask? how much did it cost to get them sculpted?
I know that Kev has a high price for commisioned sculpts but the rest?
-
Akula, these are very nice figures but if i might ask? how much did it cost to get them sculpted?

No disrespect but I'd rather not discuss the commission costs online - they tend to vary (even for a given sculptor) according to the brief, it's complexity and the number of sculpts you are interested in.
What I would say, re:cost is that I'm happy with the VALUE for money I've got from the sculpts I've commissioned, and with each project I learn a bit more.
:)
Over the past few years I've commissioned sculpts from Whiffwaff, Shane Hoyle, Bob Olley, Andrew Rae, Kev White and Ian Mountain - every sculptor has their own rates, but also IMHO a style that suits particular subjects. I try to pick the right sculptor for the right brief...the cost is secondary - for my Russian Dwarf project, Bob Olley was a natural choice....but for the style that White Knight wanted for his Dwarf project John Pickford was a happy fit.
It is natural to focus upon the cost of a sculptor, after all if you find someone "cheap" then you get more figures....right? ;) ....but for me quality is far more important, AND reliability. You can easily spend a couple of grand with a sculptor, and think you've got a great deal, with a whole bunch of sculpts, but from experience I'd rather pay more for a sculpt, wait longer, but ultimately get something that I'd be proud to sell on.
Sorry, as I know that doesn't answer your question, but the best advice I can give is this:
- Decide upon your brief - period & scale
- Are you working from a sketch or can you give a descriptive brief?
- Do you want complete prescriptive control, or are you the sort of guy that is happy to trust the sculptor to get on with it (if the former, you need to be specific, if the latter then if they interpret it differently then it's your fault not theirs).
My own preference is to give a loose brief and let the sculptor get on with it - I've already chosen (I hope) someone that suits the brief, and the sculptor knows better than me what works in a mould, so I let them get on with it.
I'd rather not turn this thread into a general discussion about sculptors, but I'm happy to answer any questions (except cost) on a PM, or contribute to a discussion if you want to start a thread in the Open Talk forum - I'd suggest the latter, as there are plenty of others on here that would be happy to contribute to such a discussion.
:)
-
Thank you for that reply Akula,it was very informative.
If I need to commission anything in the fture(dont think I will) I will look at it again:)
-
....then again, I could have just said, "you get what you pay for..."
lol
-
yes, lol

You know, after seeing this fig, I know what's "wrong" with the first ones you posted - the shirt collars. If all of them had this sort of tunic/uniform, I bet no one would call them UPS guys ;)
-
You know, after seeing this fig, I know what's "wrong" with the first ones you posted - the shirt collars. If all of them had this sort of tunic/uniform, I bet no one would call them UPS guys ;)
true, but then this guy is an officer, hence the high collar, and the tunic is right of centre (as per the first sculpt) whereas sculpts 2,3, and 4 are squaddies.... ;)

Yes, I know, but the collars are way too different, even for squaddies lol

It'll work as an officious civilian official, as long as no guns are added obviously. Might like to get one of those too in that case.

Please 'sign me up' for the Mr Mountain security guard figures, 2 of each pose. All superb :D

Are the assualt troops still available? If so I'll take a group.

Be good to see kevs end sculpts, might be interested.

I just remembered! These guys remind me of the starsip crew from Forbidden Planet!

Gonna raise my hand here for a set or two of the assault troops!

Ian is just finishing off some additional bits of kit for me - once these are done, will get the masters made (in order to have all the conversions made).
Once the conversions are made will get some castings, and let everyone know, so still plenty of time to register interest (and save up)
:D

Well it's so damned crazy it might just work!
-
Surely not! You are just so, like, old fashioned, man lol
It is a real shame that there aren't any little people/Dwarfs in your setting because the sculpts you have had made so far are brilliant... but I know that they would sit un-painted if I bought them and I wouldn't want to do that to them.
Good luck with this. Hopefully, all the interest may end up you re-couping your costs :)

Some additional kit sculpted by Ian Mountain for the Garrison troopers (& the Assault troopers for that matter): Holstered pistol, dagger, sword, rocket, carbine, "seismic device", med pack, backpack, and multi-purpose rocket launcher (anti-air/anti-vehicle).

Everything made so far, including these is on its way to Griffin for master moulding - Once i've got masters back, Ian is going to work upon some conversions for me....first batch of production castings will have a total of 18 "Garrison" and 8 "Assault" minis (the former will include some leader/character types).
:D

Very nice, cant wait! Just need to think of how I am going to do a dagger like a giant worm tooth! ;)

Right lovely.

Masters arrived from Griffin today!
Some are already on their way to Ian Mountain to work upon the conversions - once these are done I will get the production moulds made, and have some spare castings available....

Realistically I'd hope to have the production figures cast up in 4-8 weeks depending upon how quickly Ian can work his magic. "release date" suggests it's a business venture rather than a personal project, and while I will have castings available for those that would like to get hold of some their availability may be for a limited period of time, so if you want some, start saving now ;)
The reason I can't give an exact date is that Ian Mountain has just got the master castings today - he is then going to make a total of 18 conversions for me, with different poses, weapons, kits etc. Once these are done, the 18 conversions, plus masters of the original 8 minis will go in a couple of production moulds.
Its always been my intention to produce a comprehensive collection of miniatures suitable for space opera-type games, which is why the first batch of production castings will number 26 figures.
The plan is then to reinvest the proceeds from these, into commissioning the next phase of the project, which will include other factions, and characters.....
Needless to say, once I've got production castings available, I will let everyone that has expressed an interest on this thread know FIRST.....
:)

I'm impressed by both the level of investment and the forethought and planning your putting into these. (And not a kickstarter insight ;) )
Have you any idea to the pricing of them yet?
-
Have you any idea to the pricing of them yet?
That would rather be the question. They are very nice but not, say, $20 per trooper nice. Especially since I do think I will want helmeted heads for them and am not where to put the bare ones after.
-
Excellent! I'm absolutely loving ALL of those sculpts! I've got feck all use for them but I love them. They're just asking to be painted!!
-
Have you any idea to the pricing of them yet?
I've got a ball park idea, but until I've got the production moulds made I'd rather not say, as I need to set out which figures go in which mould, which in turn may affect the cost per spin.
They will be reasonably priced given the quality of the sculptors involved (so not $20 a mini ) - I'm working on not losing money from the project rather than maximising profits, with any proceeds going into expanding the number of figures available in the project, so that it grows in scale.

Sounds a great project. When you're finished I'd be interested in picking your brains and experience for help with a project I've had rolling around the back of my mind for a while.

Happy to offer any help or suggestions, as I'm sure are some of the other LAF'ers like White Knight and Matakishi (and the Prof. of course) who have also commissioned their own projects.
I'm fortunate that I've gotten to know a lot of decent sculptors though Frothers Unite, and am indebted to Frank Hammond (aka Mongrel, of Minden Miniatures and formerly Mongrel Miniatures) for some practical advice about how to plan out a project. Tempting as it is to just splash out on greens, you can save yourself a lot of trouble (and money) if you invest your time in planning before you start.
:)

Hello Akula
I also am interested in the miniatures. :-*
Please put me on the list for pre-orders. ;)
Many Thanks from Germany ...
-
You do realize that I don't need more temptation... right?
Very nice.
Gracias,
Glenn

They have come out well :-* I would imagine it must be very fulfilling watching your plans come to fruition. Well done for giving inspiration and for offering us a way in!

Lovely. I can't wait to get my hands on these. :-*
-
Cheers all - thanks for the words of encouragement!
I would imagine it must be very fulfilling watching your plans come to fruition. Well done for giving inspiration and for offering us a way in!
It is very fulfilling, and at the same time i'm having to rein in my usual meglomanical tendencies to keep it at a realistic pace.
Having said that i've already got plans for two more "troop class" classifications (you can probably guess the direction that these will take), plus a whole bunch of character-types. Both "troop classes" will have enough variety to field a self-contained force.
Of course to make them a reality, i need first of all to get the first two classes ("Assault" and "Garrison") produced - as I mentioned above I'm aiming to have production castings of both of these within a 4-8 week window (provided Ian can finished the conversions in time).
Once I have them cast up, all proceeds from them will go into the next phase - given the interest in these todate, i'd expect the progress on the next phase will be pretty swift, but i'm committed to expanding the project so that the forces are all rounded out, rather than just a token figure or two.

You are a scholar and gentleman.

Back from hols, and had a chance to take a quick size comparison photo, with a ruler (the squares are half inch in size).
All of the minis are in the 28-30mm to the eye range.
(Left to right: AKULA/Crooked Dice TLS/AKULA/Hasslefree*/AKULA)
No great surprises that they are similar, as Ian Mountain sculpted the first three minis, and Kev White the last two (*before anyone asks I've added the pulse rifle to the HF Grant mini).

Nice. Really looking forward to these! :D
-
Great miniatures, I'm looking forward to it. :-*
-
I see Corporate Security for my Aliens games have arrived! :D
-
The first painted examples of some of the masters (Ian Mountain is still working upon the conversions but I hope to have these shortly).
The paint scheme isn't the one i'll be using for my own project, but shows the usefulness of a generic range of space-opera/sci-fi figures (and seemed quite appropriate for the Fenris Games (30mm) bases I sent Paul)

Painted by Paul Sanderson (thanks again!)
:D

Oooh!
They look very nice!
:-* :-* :-*
And pretty much how I envisaged them looking all coloured-in and stuff.
;)
-
Looking good. I hear "apology accepted Captain Needa" when I look at the officer! I hope to purchase some of these fellows. :)
-
I hear "apology accepted Captain Needa" when I look at the officer!
lol
Like I say, my next terrain project is something slightly different, but a space station the size of a small moon is tempting now....

Can I get on board for some Garrison Troopers?
Maybe some future ninjas with laser swords??
A bear with a crossbow? And scoundrels, lots of scoundrels... :D
-
Can I get on board for some Garrison Troopers?
Yup. :)
Maybe some future ninjas with laser swords??
A bear with a crossbow?
Nope. :)
And scoundrels, lots of scoundrels... :D
Always a possibility. :)
-
After seeing these figures painted...can I stil get some of those Garrison troopers? ;)
-

Of course :D

I too would be interested in some of the garrison troopers... (if it is not too late)
Jim

Me too please.
-
Me too please.
Ian is currently working upon the conversions, so once they are ready I will get the production moulds made, and get everything cast up in one go 26 figures means two moulds-worth.
Needless to say, will post up photos of the conversions when ready - essentially they are to flesh out the first two forces "garrison" and "assault" before I move on to the next couple of troop types, which will have move of a hazmat vibe..... :D
-
Looking smart mate. I'm late to the party but the Garrison troops and Officer would be useful if there are some spares...
-
Matt, Count me in as a interested party. Everything looks great!
-
I am really interested!!! Very nice those Garrison troopers.
-
The first painted example of one of the "assault troopers" (sculpted by Kev White, painted by Paul Sanderson). This is a master casting - Ian Mountain is currently working upon some conversions for me. Can't really see from this angle, but his left hand is holding a knife.

Needless to say I am really chuffed with how this whole project if progressing.
:D

That's lovely. Now leave Ian alone so he can get on with my stuff ;)

Great. :-*
I love the miniatures and am looking forward when I soblad these are available to buy. :D

Even though I have no use for the Assault Troopers, I can still say that they are rather fine sculpts!
:-*
Now please tell me when I can buy some 'Garrison' types..... :D
Need some Needa!
;)

That's lovely. Now leave Ian alone so he can get on with my stuff ;)
lol
-
Akula,
Wow... The Garrison Troopers are very good... I'm interested we you get some cast-up.
However, the Assault guys are AMAZING. I have wanted a Fremen(ish) force for a long time. Please add me to the group of interested folk.
:o :o :o
-
That's lovely. Now leave Ian alone so he can get on with my stuff ;)
Ditto! :D
-
Will definately be wanting some of these when they come out ;D

Paul Sanderson has painted the next two "Assault" troopers, so here is a group shot.

There are six heads on the sprue to allow for positioning/variety.
-
are you doing a duneish sort of project here akky?
The figures i'm commissioning aren't meant to be specific to an individual film, but they would fit in with a variety of backgrounds depending upon how you paint them.....take the first two garrison troopers that Paul painted grey.....the paint scheme gives them a Star Wars vibe, but they aren't Death Star personnel. Paint them in black and they will be more reminiscent of the bad guys from Blake Seven (minus the helmets of course), paint them in a sand colour and they might well serve as Atreides guards....
:D
By a happy coincidence I do have a Dune terrain project, and so I'm sure that my generic space-opera type figures will make an appearance in that project....I can see how you might interpret the "Assault" troopers Kevlar Body Armour as a Fremen still suit if you painted it that way, but clearly I can't call it that as I don't hold a license, and besides it isn't a copy of the film suit.
Next on the list are some chaps in Hazmat/fire protection suits....heavily armed of course.
;)
-
no allegation of IP infringement intended.
I know...I just wanted to make sure no one else gets confused :D
I am just becoming more enamoured of the figs. Garrison ones to be specific as they really are versatile.
Really glad you like them - the conversions will bulk them out into a more rounded unit, with another officer, a medic, squad support weapons.
-
Akula,
I am confused. Do you have a release-date for your stuff?
-
Do you have a release-date for your stuff?
Still waiting for the conversions back from Ian.
Once I have them, I will get all of the figures cast, and let you know they are available.
This is likely to be early/mid July.
:)

:D What a pleasure.

Paul has finished the last of the master castings from the first batch of greens, and i'm very pleased with the end result :D

nicely nicely... any female troops planned?
-
nicely nicely... any female troops planned?
Entirely possible, although not top of the todo list.
After the additional "assault" and "garrison" troopers are finished, "hazmat" troopers will be next. I do have some female "characters" are on the list as well, as well as various non-military types....ideally would like the project to encompass some figures that would be suitable for RPG-style games as well as outright combat games.
:)
-
Those suited troopers almost look like they're saying something? Mooradeeb is it? ;)
Very nice Matt sealed helmet options for the suited minis would be a good generic option?
-
sealed helmet options for the suited minis would be a good generic option?
Have plans for additional head options....different type of hat for the Garrison Troopers, plus at least one type of helmet (sealed) for the Assault troopers.
:)
-
Are you planning any nun type females in robes?
-
Somehow the robes seem necessary. Don't think you could tell a woman is a nun of she wasn't wearing 'em ;)
-
Very cool, love 'em!
-
Are you planning any nun type females in robes?
I do have plans for some non-military types, both male and female in long robes....depending upon how you paint them up they could easily represent members of a religious order, a court entourage, or ordinary civilians.
:)
-
Very nice. Saw that other lot doing minis fo an SF desert planet setting at Phalanx yesterday, and they were much better in the flesh than I thought they were from the photos on their website, but these are lush :D
-
Hi Akula. If its not to late could you stick me down for a couple of packs of Garrison troopers please.
-
Hi Akula. If its not to late could you stick me down for a couple of packs of Garrison troopers please.
Still plenty of time to register an interest, as I haven't made the production moulds yet
:D
-
Sweet i'll get saving then ;)
-
Count me in as an interested party :)
At least one of each fig!
-
I'll definitely take a set, if it wasn't obvious before ;)
-
I'm definitely interested too. Between Blakes 7, Aliens, Space:1999 and every other Science Fiction setting I'm working on, the real choice will be which project gets the new goodies. There are so many ways to use the garrison troops.
-
Not to sound like a broken record, but I also have far too many uses for a set of garrison troopers. I'm interested.
-
Very Interested in the Garrison Troopers as well
-
Quick Update - first six conversions of the Garrison Troopers by Ian Mountain, designed to bulk out the squad.

More conversions of the Garrison Troopers to follow, plus some of the Assault troopers, then will get the Production moulds made
:D
-
looking really nice, might have to get some of them :)
also look fine for classic 50' sci-fi 'Forbidden Planet' and 60's-70's TV :-*

Please count me also in. 8)
As said before: At least one of each fig!

....also look fine for classic 50' sci-fi 'Forbidden Planet' and 60's-70's TV :-*
My thoughts exactly.
They would work perfectly as minions in that genre.
;)
-
Simply fantastic!
How many Garrison troops are planned?
Trying to save my (now discontinued) pennies.
Might need a 2nd set.

"First wave" is 18 Garrison troopers (including a leader, Bodyguard, Aide, Medic, pilot, plus the cannon fodder, plus 8 Assault troopers.
I say first wave because I'm sure I will be tempted to add more poses if these are a success....
-
Those specialists are excellent!
-
Great Work. :-*
I love the Miniatures... ;D and want to have :D
-
I'm very interested in the Garrison troops and will pick up one of each (if the price is right of course ;)
-
I do have plans for some non-military types, both male and female in long robes....depending upon how you paint them up they could easily represent members of a religious order, a court entourage, or ordinary civilians
Civvies are always welcome. Tho long-robe-wearing ones aren't on the top of my scifi civilian want list.
I hope you are planning to make the heads on the assault troops and the civvies interchangeable. Namely I still have to find some bodies to put the original assault trooper heads on.
-
Civilians in long robes sound perfect to me. I've been looking for those for my classic Battlestar Galactica project. Now if only I can find Colonial Warriors.
-
consecutive posts that sum up everything I love about wargaming
:D
Will do my best to make some minis that people can find a use for....interchangeable heads makes sense, and I hope to have some variety in terms of civilians/characters and the like.
As with all my projects though its about support - I'm not a company, and this isn't a kickstarter, so if you guys like the first 26 minis when they are cast up later this month then please follow through on that support...any proceeds from spare castings will go straight back into making more greens.... ;)
-
I would be happy if I can support you through purchases. :D
-
I'd be interested in picking up a handful of the Garrison troopers if there are still some available. :D
-
I'd be interested in picking up a handful of the Garrison troopers if there are still some available. :D
I'll add your name to the growing list....still a couple of weeks off of having castings!
:D
-
You'll have sold out of the garrison troopers before they're cast at this rate! I'd say they were a success :D
-
I'm definitely interested but it will depend on the price as pennies are in short supply at the moment. If you could put my name down so I don't miss out just in case I do have enough for them that would be great.

Ok, a biggie today - another 12 conversions!

Am really chuffed with how well they've all turned out - and i'd like to thank Ian and Kev again for their support!
All 18 Garrison troopers and 8 Assault Trooper variants will shortly be heading off to Griffin for production mould-making so i'd hope to have castings in approx. 2 weeks time - needless to say when I do have them, I will post on here.
:D
-
They are brilliant. Get your finger out and sell me the moulds.
-
Get your finger out and sell me the moulds.
lol
Sorry mate, not going to happen ;)
-
Dear sweet baby jebus!
Love love love the Garrison troops.
-
Love that Pilot and Bodyguard.
They are all good but I MUST have those two.
Now please stop teasing us like this.
Just damn well get them cast, man.
>:(
;)
-
Nice pilot Matt, not keen on the missiles but apart from a 'quiver' store no real other option to show ammo. Be good to see these cast. :D
-
Have you ever been excited about something, but you can't find the words to express how excited you are? That's me, right now.
I'm excited!
(Maybe more exclamation marks would help.)
-
Can't wait to get my hands on those 18 Garrison troopers ;) 2 weeks you say?
-
2 weeks you say?
Or thereabouts... Griffin are very reliable on turnaround, so as soon as I've got them cast up, I will post on here, as I'm excited about getting my hands on these as you guys
;)
-
The new guys look fantastic, I think I'll forget the money issues and get some of these regardless or else I'll just be kicking myself. Awesome project AKULA :D
-
I can see myself buying alot of these :D
-
top stuff...
will the bodyguard be growing his hair and going the assault troops?
-
Holy Crap. This gets better and better. Please don't let my name fall off the interested parties list. Those most recent convos are amazing.

More wonderful work; I like them all.
One thing irks me slightly; the pistol holster on the pilot looks a bit misplaced there; it's on his right shoulder, but with a righthand draw, which would make it rather awkward to draw. Might I suggest moving it over to the left shoulder? Or alternatively, flip the holster to make him into a leftie?
All in all just a very minor gripe though; this range is getting more interesting with each update! 8)

rewatched a certain Space Opera at the weekend... now need Patrick Stewart holding a pug in one hand and a rifle in the other...
-
Masters plus conversions have gone off to Griffin for mould making today....will post on here once I have castings available.
:)
@Daeothar - clearly the pilot is a bit of a poser, rather than a combat vet....easily fixed with a sharp knife if it irks you. ;)
-
No problem; he might well get shivved when I get him then :D

Not sure how I missed this image, but glad to see some proper facial hair options.
-
As I mentioned, they've gone for mouldmaking so I won't be making any changes to the greens now.
It is the most minor of changes to a casting, as the holster will stick out from the shoulder, so if its easily altered if you really want to.
;)

Don't worry; I'll be gentle...
He'll never know what hit him :D

Another new green - this one from Zorro
"The Brute" is 37mm to the top of his head, a muscle-bound gargantuan, or a genetically-enhanced freak, either way i'm sure that he will find employment as a torturer for a regime somewhere in the galaxy....

Will be a little while before this chap is available as the current couple of moulds are full up, but I've got more greens planned....
-
Yet another excellent sculpt, not sure I'd have any use for the fella but he does look cracking.
-
Any word from the casters?
I'm an impatient git, I know... :D
-

I'm an impatient git, I know... :D
Spoke to them Friday....only one mould in front of me in the queue so should be sorted this week.
As I may have mentioned once or twice, I will let everyone that has posted on this thread know once they are cast ;)
-
I'd really like to get hold of some of the Assault Troops and commander when they are available.
-
My order has gone out. :D
-
I ordered what I deemed was a sensible amount due to my funds but then saw sense (or went nuts) and ordered some more! Really can't wait to these to arrive and to see what new eye candy Akula brings us :)
Edit: Just got my first batch (Assault Troopers) in hand and they're simply glorious, so glad I got these.
-
I figured I might get another day's grace to contact everyone that has expressed an interest....
lol
To anyone that has posted on the thread, but hasn't heard from me, will PM you shortly with details of what is available and how you get hold of it.
;)
-
Very nice generic forces. Good, as noted, for most any combat SF setting.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
The figures are excellent :-* Got mine today :D
-
The figures are now available - no renders, no kickstarters, just actual metal castings....
:)
If anyone is interested in getting hold of some, please drop me a PM, and I will respond asap.
I've also got some castings of the following two figures still available, sculpted for me by Andrew Rae.
Old Man

Are the old man and infiltrator meant to represent someone specific?
-
Are the old man and infiltrator meant to represent someone specific?
Nope, they were from a different project of mine, but any resemblance to anyone is entirely coincidental.
:)

Slapped a bit of paint on some of the new figures:

Not sure about the girl, but the old man looks a lot like Dr. Yueh from Dune, if he was 25 years older.
-
The figures are arrived.
Great.
I'm excited. :D
Thank you very much.
-
Waiting patiently across the pond...
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Received my package (Kansas, USA) today, they look great.
-
Everyone that has paid has had their parcels dispatched and so should be receiving their goodies shortly....
....unlike your typical Kickstarter (where you will have probably forgotten what you'd ordered by the time it turns up).

Package arrived a couple of days ago; great stuff! 8)

I got mine as well. Great minis and lots of extra bitz too.
-
Very nice minis, to bad I can't spare the money right now. :'(
-
I received the assault troopers. They look fantastic and very clean casts!
Thanks Matt.
-
Mine finished their journey across the big pond yesterday, and I must say they are VERY lovely. Now I just have to figure out which project will get these beauties. It might finally be time for "V"
-
Mine arrived in the Midwest USA today! Debating currently on exactly what role they will fulfill.
Militia?
Armed Response unit? (Alien Control SWAT)
Military Police? (The Knives re-defined as "shock rods," "Burn Sticks" - for penetrating chitin or thick leathery skin, psychic scramblers, or paralytic/sonic disablers.)
Elite Special Forces? Uniform could be nano-impregnated Ultra advance "Ballistic Cloth" armor...
Gracias,
Glenn
-
All orders received and they are such great sculpts :D
-
Just a quick headsup, looks like I may be away after this weekend for a week to ten days, so if anyone is after some of the minis in a hurry drop me a PM in the next couple of days....
;)
-
Mine just arrived across the pond.
Fan-fan-fantastic!
Too bad the good ole boys at the Canada Border Services Agency dinged me for extra fees...

Just got mine today (on my birthday no less :) ). Absolutely lovely figures. Glad I grabbed some.
Thanks Akky!
~Eric
-
Mine arrived on Tuesday, though it took till today to get them from the post office. Fantastic miniatures, and an amazing shipping speed. I only ordered them on Friday. I've already cleaned up three test figures. Hopefully I'll have something to show off soon.
-
Am glad that the "first wave" has been so well-recieved
:)
I still have some spare castings if anyone else is interested (drop me a PM for details)....
The good news is that all of the proceeds from the spares is going into commissioning additional greens....
Next up on the todo list are some elite gas masked troopers, hazmats, some religious types AND some vehicles .......
;)
Pictures and details as soon as I have them ready to go!
-
Can... not... wait... ;)

Could just be a genetic throw backs. Like my friends kids has blond hair and he is native Mexican with a little bit of Spanish mixed in.
-
He, he true. I know that I am too simplistic here, North African pale skinned redhaired desertdwellers are indeed prove me wrong... ::) ;)
-
Very nice looking indeed, I know the scheme is that complex but can I ask which colours were used on them?
Checked with Paul, and he confirmed the following:
Assault Troopers: P3 Battlefield Brown highlighted with GW Zandri Dust.
Garrison Troopers. German Camo Beige basically, highlighted with white.
Bases: GW Zandri Dust as the base, then a few drybrushes with white. The GW Zandri dust ties the uniform to the base without going OTT on dusty washes and obscuring detail.

Cheers for that :)

More painted examples by the talented Mr Sanderson.

(Left to Right: Pilot, Medic, Trooper, Aide)

Sweet. I really like the medic. That is some nicely painted white. I hate painting white. :D
-
Painted first couple of mine, just to test paint scheme for them:
Very nice miniatures. Definitely need to purchase more of them in the future.
-
It's good how a different paint job can really change the look of these, it shows just how versatile they are. Mine will be getting painted up as security personnel for my Aliens sci-fi corporation. I can't decide how to paint them yet though.
-
Nice job on those in their Caladan colours.
-
Lovely Paint job Nimrod - nice to see an alternative paint scheme
:D
New Green time!

An evil little Dog. :D
Without a tail?
@ Nimrod
Great painting. :-*
-
An evil little Dog. :D
Without a tail?
Maybe that's why he's so evil and bad-tempered. Consider how dogs like chasing their tails, and pity the pooch that doesn't have one. lol
Very nice sculpt. A much better pet for that vile Baron than that scrawny cat.
-
Its funny what tickles my miniature fancy this far down the miniature rabbit hole (thats the rudest sentence that I have typed for quite a while) but I think that the dog is my favourite part of this project so far. And this project isnt short of high points :)
I would love to get my hands on a couple of those pooches.
-
An evil little Dog. :D
Without a tail?
Sounds like my old Pembroke. Didn't look much like a crocodile tho even if he was capable of doing a very good impression of one.
-
I received the last of the "first wave" of garrison troopers back from Paul Sanderson today, so thought i'd take a group shot of the bunch together - am sure you will agree he did a top job of painting them!

I have some shots of my first three Akula Troopers. These are test figures to see how this color scheme looks. I'm happy to say I think they work. I haven't finished the bases yet, but I wanted to show them off right away.

Colours work really well IMHO - are you going to put some sort of insignia or similar on the helmet?
:)
-
are you going to put some sort of insignia or similar on the helmet?
:)
Yeah. There would be one there but I ran out of time. I did a big photo session on Friday morning that included my Blade Runner stuff and these guys. To get these guys in I skipped the helmet design. I'm considering a basic shape in red, ala the red star on communist helmets, or caution stripes on the visor. I thought about going with the Star Wars style pin stripes and shapes look, but that seems too busy for the clean look of your figures. Now I'm over thinking this. I do that sometimes.

Quick update:
A couple of WIPs by Andrew May....
The plan is that these wont be carrying weapons, and so would do as court flunkeys/functionaries/civilians

Also, Ian Mountain is working upon some Elite(gasmasked troopers)....
;)
-
Sci-fi civilians!!! We need more of them. Nice work by Andrew as usual.
-
I can feel my wallet getting lighter ;)
-
This is getting good :)
-
Sci-fi civilians!!! We need more of them
Sure. Not too keen on the whole long robes thing personally tho. Fits the background I'm certain but not really my cuppa. Will have to wait for more finished versions to pass judgement tho.
-
Great! Release-Date? 2013?
-
I know what these guys are supposed to be, but I can't wait to use them for classic Battlestar Galactica. Caprican civilians celebrating the peace treaty with the Cylons. It'll be a daggit crushing good time.
-
Great! Release-Date? 2013?
When its finished ;)
Hopefully in 6-8 weeks, maybe a bit quicker.... Have also got the alien hound and "Brute" greens earmarked for the same mould, plus maybe the troopers that Ian M. is working upon.
-
I've just finished my Camp Commander - which gives my Sp*c* M*r*n*s someone to dance with. :)
He has a small personal organising bot too

-
He looks very camp; nice job! :D
-
lol. Nice job mate.
Are you going to give him a pink buggy...?
-
It's not pink, it's Fuscia. Talk about clashing...
-
I got my shuttle in the mail and it is exquisite. The little weapons buggy i bought looks fantastic as well. As soon as I get the bird painted I'll post pics.
-
Dammit!
November and the end of wedding season can't come soon enough.
-
I agree - these are nice, and have been following this thread for a while.
PS I also have the problem of brides drapping themselves on my painting table wanting their picture taken. So annoying.
-
I received the last of the "first wave" of garrison troopers back from Paul Sanderson today...
Anxiously awaiting the "second wave" now... lol
-

Currently being worked upon:
3 x male civilians
3 x female civilians
4 x "Elite" (gas masked) troopers - first greens of a new type
I can't give an exact date for completion of the above, but hope to have them all for mouldmaking in c4weeks time.
Finished, and waiting for a full mould before casting:
-Casualty figure (for Medical Buggy)
-"the Brute"
-Alien Croc-Hound
-weapon sprues
Vehicles masters currently being finished, or awaiting casting:

LOL, so true, KS are for man who are not believing in their own products (at least not enough to risk their own money...)
:D ;) ;) ;)
-
Very nice aliens. Will definitely need to buy them, when they become available. :)
-
Looking forward to the Civilians and the Elite troopers along with the Brute. Also interested in how the vehicles will turn out.
-
Great stuff!
Those greens look the business.

-
Might definitely want Redshadow's worm...err...thingy. Quite possibly some elite troopers too. The civilians WIPs shown earlier weren't too much to my taste tho.
-
LOL, so true, KS are for man who are not believing in their own products (at least not enough to risk their own money...)

My wish for Christmas is, that copplestone Discovers Kickstarter. So maybe a range will be more than started. All his Range Need some kicked Start or will be stoped After some blisters ;)
-
I recently started a fresh blog, just to review my miniature purchases etc.
http://miniaturesofakind.blogspot.co.uk/
Todays entry is a little brief review of some of the garrison troopers I purchased. I have included a scale shot with a hasslefree miniature and a shot with a Maxmini head just so you can see how flexible they are.
I am really looking forward to painting mine, they look as if they'll take paint so very nicely! :D

That would be interesting. He's my favorite sculptor but I hate the way he butterflies around to new projects.
Really liking the new sculpts Akky, well done.

Wonderful work - I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the new civilians.

New vehicles freshly cast up in resin - 3 more buggy variants, and a Drone.

Will get some crew made up for the troop carrier.
-
Despite having made and cast these, this is the first time I've seen them all together... I'm kind of impressed in a surprised way rather than just vain.
I think the drone is my best master yet, so thanks for the faith in my abilities Akky. ;)
-
Lovely, gents! 8) 8)
What about making a pilot that would fit in the Drone? Have a circular base to him so he covers the turbine?

I really love the drone! My fav out of them all, it might even make a 15mm flyer . . . . Superb stuff Phil.
-
I think the drone is my best master yet, so thanks for the faith in my abilities Akky. ;)
Am very chuffed with all of them, but especially the Drone....would definitely love to get some more made (as you know) but guess I'd better see if there are takers for my spare of these first.
:)
What about making a pilot that would fit in the Drone? Have a circular base to him so he covers the turbine?
Might be a bit uncomfortable.... ;). Seriously though, sizewise would look a little odd piloted, but a slighter larger one-man flyer could be a possibility.
All of the buggies/drone are meant to fit in with a generic background, my thinking was that they can be controlled by the tablets the officers/medics carry, and could be transported in small pods aboard a spaceship, making them cost efficient for a colonial governor...certainly the garrison troopers are meant to give the impression of control "on the cheap".... why have expensive pilot training, when you can have a grunt with a tablet clicking on a target....weight/space for a pilot can be used on fuel & weapons.
-
They look sensible for the outlined purpose. Not sure if I can afford to get any tho :?
-
The vehicles (and figures) aren't meant to be based upon any background in particular. The vehicles are to give me a more "rounded" force for my games.
I do have a Dune game planned for Salute, so doubtless some of the figures will find their way onto the table. The game will be based upon the Harkonnen attack during the film.
As for rules....
....haven't written them yet (but when I do they will be free to download as usual).
:)
-
I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with rules wise.
-
The rocket launcher vehicle is brilliant!
-
Finished, and waiting for a full mould before casting:
-Casualty figure (for Medical Buggy)
-"the Brute"
-Alien Croc-Hound
-weapon sprues
2 questions.... :D
Is the casualty figure based on a Garrison trooper?
Are the weapons sprues for the Garrison troopers?
Hopefully they are close to completion :D
-
I'm late to the party, but good show Akky.
I can see these guys in a number of roles:
Arrakis obvious, SW imperials, Firefly Federals, or any number of Dr. Who planetary forces - Kaleds for example.
I found this thread while searching for Forbidden Planet models. Though FP is mentioned here a couple of times, these models are not really suitable. The long sleeved uniform in FP has shoulder pads and a ribbed front; the short sleeved uniform is worn with a flat American style forage cap and has, well, short sleeves. If anybody know where to get FP style models, PM me!
(BTW Robbie the Robot was available until recently from Black Cat Bases - sadly they are currently (Nov 2013) unreachable.)
-

The casualty figure is pretty much covered by a blanket/bandages and so should be usable for all sorts of things.
One weapon sprue is of the carbine that the garrison troopers use, but there should be at least one other weapon sprue with some different options....
Just waiting for a couple of bits to fill a mould....the gasmasked troopers/civilians are still being worked upon, but at this rate I'll have two new moulds in the near future, rather than one.....
:D
-
Hopefully I will do more to my Garrison Troopers tonight to be able to get a pic up of them, but I am painting mine to look a bit like Babylon 5 security.
The reality is they are exactly what Akky intended, very good generic troopers.

Yes!
Although I still don't have the foggiest idea for my color scheme... lol

New Greens for my little project

The initial brief was just for a couple of civilians, but had some dollies made, so depending upon the paint job they could either act as court flunkies, priests if used as a group etc

No plans to at the moment....they are in a mould with the assault troopers, so if I sell the heads separately, I'm left with headless assault troopers ;)

Hi Akky
I've enjoyed following your project very much. Do you intend on doing a set of elite troopers in radiation suits at any point? I'm very tempted to buy some of your figures in the new year but I'd need the right looking opponents for the garrison troopers if you know what I mean.
All the best,
George.

I've just recieved some guys with gas masks, but troops in full hazmat suits are next on the todo list, so I think they will suit your purposes....

These will be going off next week for casting along with the male/female civilians, the Brute, the croc hound, the space wasp, a garrison trooper sniper, and casualty figure. The space slug will also be cast up (in resin).
Next up on the todo list will be some more character figures, plus some hazmat troopers.

Nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Looking good, this is such a cool range of figures :)

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. The new elite troopers look superb and I can't wait to see the hazmat troopers. I think getting some of your stuff will be a priority as soon as I get some cash in the new year. The whole project is one of the best things I've seen.
All the best,
George.

Really great looking range of figures and wish you luck with it. I'm itching to find a way of using some of the figures in my Future Wars collection.

Lots of great stuff in this line! Can you give me an idea of what the price would be for the set of figures depicted in your signature? It looks like the perfect armed ships crew to my eye.
Thanks!

Oh, and congratulations on a great range.
:D

Wow, I know you had made all of those but didn't quite realise the scale of it until you posted that piccy.
Glad I got some, they are going to come in very handy indeed - and very nice they are too. :)
-
I got my space wasps painted. I made three very different bases and colour coded them for ID during games.
These are quite spiteful mini's, cleaning them and painting them involves contact with those spikes so expect some ouch-ouch-ouch moments. I mixed up the wings on mine for variety but I'm not sure you can see it. Also spent too much time working out how to paint the wings, I tried some pearlescent medium which is an expensive way of not just mixing some, more effective, white and silver. In the end I've gone for an off-white highlighted with silver with a gloss varnish, although in the photo it does look solely silver.

Nice painting, the red eyes make them look really pissed off. Wings look great.

Congratulations! A brilliant range.

Thanks for posting Phil - nice work.
Have still got at least a handful of each sculpt, so if you want some PM me while you still can

Just finished the drone, although there's a hair in the photos which I've since removed... >:(
I have to say whoever made this model must be one hell of a chap - charming, handsome, a hit with the ladies, loved by animals and small children. I bet he even has a fine moustache - I'd like to shake his hand. 8)

Weapons have a bit of a contemporary feel so they can be used for zombie games as well as sci-fi but easy to modify if you want them for sci-fi games (just trim the mag or green stuff it).
:D

ooo they look good definitely for Zombie and SciFi games :-*

I'll be modding those guns slightly but otherwise lovely stuff as usual.

I've been prepping metal figures from all sorts of manufacturers lately, and all I have to say is that I love Griffin castings. Love.
So sick of damn mold lines, from just about everyone these days. You made a great choice :)

Gotta agree with you, Doc: Griffin are great!
My stuff came back from them with virtually no clean up required at all.
Top drawer.

Completely agree - I couldn't see the point in getting the best sculptors I could find and then using a second rate caster.
There are other decent casters around but Griffin have never let me down.

Hazmats inbound....Griffin have done me proud again.
Will post photos when they arrive, but it means I will have castings before Salute....

Yup have to agree with all re Griffin. Getting crisp castings AND your greens back in a great shape too is very satisfying.

A big box of castings just arrived from Griffin.
Hazmat Troopers (Sculpted by Ian Mountain)

PM me if you are interested - still have a few of the previous waves of castings also.
:)
-
Lovely stuff and PM sent
-
They look great, will have to get some off you at the end of the month
-
A few (very quickly) painted examples of the Hazmat troopers....I could have gone for all sorts of colours....yellow, blue, white, red, but I happened to have a can of black primer to hand.
:)

Pretty much what mine are going to look like :)

Excellent choice with the black ;)

Collected a (second) box of goodies from Akula at Salute. Good to put a face to a name. :)
Just one painted up so far:

A Garrison Sniper, slightly converted using a Crooked Dice head, to fit in with a group of 7TV miniatures.
The rest may take me a bit longer.... Hopefully the latter part of this year, but in a more "sandy" colour scheme. ;)
-
Great paint job on him, love the detailing on the face.
-
Lovely paint job Paul - was good to meet up at Salute!
:)
For anyone else interested, I still have a handful of spares, just drop me a PM if you want details.

I'm delighted to announce that I've agreed to sell my space opera project to an interested party that will ensure that the figures continue to be available in the future.
It's not my place to confirm the buyer at the moment, but I'd like to thank everyone that has supported the project over the last year or so and seen it grow into a comprehensive group of figures.
I will post details of my next madcap scheme shortly - needless to say all of the proceeds from the sale of the space opera project will go towards new commissions.
:)
-
I tried a couple of times to contact you in order to purchase some of these.... do you still have stock? Or do I now have to wait for the new ownership to release them?
Thanks,
KONNOC
-
I hope its hasslefree. I've been meaning to get some more stuff from them. It would fit nicely in their range too.
-
Can you tell us if your next madcap project is related to this one? :)
-
i'm gonna say reaper...i imagine they would love to expand their range with these :)
-
My money would be on Crooked Dice, as this range would fit well with theirs.
-
Congrats Akky. Whomever it is, I'm glad I'll still be able to buy them as I have to round out my collection. Will this include the excellent resin vehicles?
-

On page 14 Uti Long smile asked Akula (teasingly) to sell him the moulds.
Ian Mountain sculpted for Crooked Dice also.
My money is on Crooked Dice as well.

Sorry but I won't be selling any spares now - you will have to wait until the new owner has them in production.
Will this include the excellent resin vehicles?
The vehicles have gone to the same buyer.

My new project is something completely different ;)

With all due respect I hope it's not interesting at all, I've spent too much money on your madcap projects :)
-

Me neither, so when someone likes a model I mastered and cast I have to commend them. ;)

I only have a little work left on my flyer and then I should be able to post pics. I hope I do your work justice.
-
Well, I think the guys who are working on shattered dynasties are behind this 8)
Check battleboards.co.uk ;)
-
Nothing to do with me, the Shattered Dynasties project still progresses though, although i did like Akula's range, my money is on Crooked Dice buying them up.
-
I hope its Crooked Dice or Hasslefree, it would compliment either of their ranges well.

You've got the drone or the bigger craft?
-
The bigger one. I'm done except for figuring out how to weather the metallic paint job I gave it.

I am sure it will be in a "size too far... I mean, big..." for my uses today, (unless you switch to 15 or 3 mm,) but the ones I got from you earlier were excellent and should sell easily once I get pictures of them ready.
This has been an interesting set of figures to follow and I know whatever else you do it shall be interesting and well done.
Gracias,
Glenn

Well, I for one would like to thank, Akula.
He took a niche miniature idea and made it successful. He gave us lots of new minis, we would not be able to buy, without his vision, contacts, and lets face it money to invest. Then he was able to sell it off, so it would still be available to us the public and collectors in general. Now he's onto a new project, and I can't wait to find out what it is.
-
Thanks mate, it was a pleasure to see the project grow.
I'm still not able announce the new owners of the space opera range, but if you are interested in my new project, I've started a thread on it below:

Of course....you could always click on my signature.... :D
-
I love your miniatures.
As soon as you can tell who bought your miniatures and they are available, please do say so.
-
No word yet on the new buyers?
I need require more Garrison troopers.
-
sorry for the Necro-post, but whatever happened to these figures? I would like to bulk out my forces...
-
I was recently wondering the same myself.
-
Almost 2.5 years with no update as to who the new owners are... :'(
-
From my understanding there will be in the near future.

2017ish near future? ;)

Well, now, if I said that I would give everything away wouldn't I? And where's the fun in that? ;D
I shall ask the 'source' if I can say . . . . ;)
-

Usually he gets it from the bottom of stones he finds on the beach, but this time of year it's definitely christmas crackers...
-
Crab claw, seaweed, murmaids purse and plastic spinning top.
-
I shall ask the 'source' if I can say . . . . ;)
On the basis I still can't say anything, I'd suggest that would be a NO.
The new owner is perfectly capable of letting everyone know in their own time, rather than having someone post something on pg32 of an old thread......

There was a recent post by Artemis Black on DakkaDakka in the Hasslefree thread that some of you might find interesting. I had asked about the 'Archbaron Drumpf' miniature that Kev showed on Facebook, and Artemis indicated that there will be a Kickstarter launching soonish.
It's a collection of minis, mostly not by Kev, that we have combined to form 'The Akulian Empire', another force in our sci-fi universe along with the Grymn, Galactic Navy and the Freebooters.
The Akulian Empire's home planet is desert-ish, they are a warring empire and heavily influenced by religion despite supposedly being a triumvirate ruled people (Politics-Religion-Armed Forces). So we have some monks and bald priestesses. We have their regular troops. We have some combat suits.

Very good news! :)

Why does it need a kickstarter? Surely the stuff is sculpted. Ok might need to rejig moulds but it seems a little unnecessary. Just release the figures.

Capital to pay for remoulding and resin/metal for the initial casting run?
To see whether there is a market for them - why pay for everything only to find out there isn't demand for it?
To generate buzz and publicity?
Kickstarters get much more attention than just advertising.
There are lots of reasons :)
-
Yes, even at manufacturer's cost any significant number of castings quickly adds up to a nice chunk of change. Fine if you are only talking a dozen castings. And then the question is how many to order. 50? 100? 500? And don't forget to tack on the shipping fee for a very heavy box!
-
Not to mention sussing out which subsets will do better than others. While many Necromunda players have been doing head swaps on the latest genestealer hybrids to make Van Saar gangs, I've seen them chomping at the bit for models that fit more closely with the original vision. And hey, if there's sufficient interest, maybe Kev will do an appropriately bedecked lady or two. A KS will give him a couple of weeks of comments from people with skin in the game to get a feel for things.
-
Glad to see the range is finally seeing the light of day again, I have more than enough of these for my own uses but it would be nice to see some new characters.
-
I've waited a long time for these to come back. Kickstarter just adds to the length of time until I get my hands on some.
-
All I'd say is that when I decided to sell the range, my priority was to find someone that I felt would look to expand the project further.
I don't currently have any involvement with the KS or the project going forward, other than as an interested bystander....but, I expect that this will be my first ever KS that I choose to participate in, as a punter.

Hey guys.
Yes, we're the new owners :) The reason for the delay is the same answer as 'why a kickstarter'. It's because we're not going to just release them as is.
We're expanding them and they simply never got to the top of Kev's worksheet. So as we recently hired a new sculptor he has started work on some extras. Nothing too fancy, some extra male and female religious 'monks', there'll be some additions to the basic troops and the combat suits. There's an 'Archbaron Drumpf' by Kev that'll be part of it too.
We're rejigging our sci-fi minis into 4 categories - Galactic Navy, Grymn, Freeboters and this new lot which will be knows as the 'Akulian Empire' ;)
It'll be a short kickstarter with a short turnaround, not some giant sprawling thing. Kickstarter is good to get a small project off the ground that needs entirely remoulding and rejigging etc.
-
Good to hear. Any idea when it's kicking off.
-
That's really great to hear, will definitely be jumping in on this one now.
-

Nope, depends how many new sculpts our new guy can do and by when. When we have enough new minis we'll launch it, it'll likely just be a week to ten days and have very few unsculpted stretch goals. Just wanna get it launched all at once.
We're genericising it a bit with the extra sculpts, more general sci-fi tropes, that still fit into an Empire run by the Triad of 'Political/Military/Religious' and hailing from a desert home planet. First job was some more religions types (With an eye to them being not particularly sci-fi so they can be used elsewhere, similar to the tropes used in Stargate for the Ori).
Next up we'll add some more variants to the existing troop types then some alterations to some of the others. Add in a few more specials and we'll be god to go. So cross your fingers on our new sculptors speed :D
(If you're interested in his skill level then we're releasing his first sculpt for us tomorrow, Ainiel, a fantasy elf).
-
I should also quickly add that the 'hazmat suits' were removed from the Akulian Empire and repurposed for the Galactic Navy with a weapon change and some extra doodads. So if you liked them as is, then they're gone now sorry.
