Title: Playing 40K RT
Post by: Suber on February 22, 2013, 03:24:35 PM
I've been trying for so long gaming back the classics. I managed a campaign of Rogue Trader with a couple of friends. Of course, the first battle of that campaign could only be the 'Battle at the Farm' which appeared in the rulebook. We recovered our old minis (I've already shown you some of my Orks (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=50296.0), soon there will be more) and went for it.

The Crimson Fists were painted by my rival:

The scenery was quite simple. We also refused to use anything too elaborate. If we were using old minis and old rules, we had to do everything old style!

The game was fun indeed, trying to call back all those infinite special rules which applied almost under every circumstance. At some point we realized that we had done it wrong, however. We had set the Orks way too far from the farm, so it was utterly impossible for them to achieve their objectives.

Not even by chance, as a matter of fact. So it was not a very tense game after all, but it was plenty of fun. The following pic could have been taken 25 years ago, but it wasn't ;D

I enjoyed it, that's the better thing that can be said about a game. It really made me think a little about how much has this game changed along the years. And not for good, IMO :(.

You can see a little bit more over here:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2013/02/playing-rogue-trader-battle-at-farm.html

I'll be posting all the battles of this campaign to let you judge about the old-vs.-new-school ;).

Great stuff, Suber!

That took me back a bit.
Quite a bit!

I really like the look of everything.
Really Old Skool!

(I see a couple of the original Marines in there.
Damn, I need a few of those....)

Amen to that.  8)

I am currently writing an AVP game mod based upon Necromunda and 2nd edition 40k (which still had much of the RT flavour).

Great post. I kid you not, I was thinking about painting up some Crimson Fists a few hours ago, for the sole purpose of playing that scenario  o_o

I'm glad you like it :)!
Well, maybe the rules were little friendly :-I, my pals and I used to say back then that the rulebook taught you everything... but to play >:D.
However, that was the game at the moment, it was almost (or most probably) the only game this kind we had at that moment, it took some years for other wargames to arrive and settle. We were entrapped by it. So I still have a place in my heart for RT.
It was refreshing, specially if you are used to later editions of 40K and the monstrosities that are 'mandatory' to play with. People, rediscover RT! ;)

Yeeeah... well. I don't know - I think it's not the rules the make RT great, but rather the atmosphere and all the tables you can roll on to generate plots and so on. In fact pretty much everything in the book but the hard and fast 'how to play' rules.  lol

But I'd echo your 'rediscover how to play loose but tight' - just like Led Zeppelin or old games.  :D

Yeah, I started out 25+ years ago with this stuff.  I played a RT game a couple months ago, its amazing that a game was that damn fun 25 years ago has devolved into the craptastic editions of today.  Kind of a shame, really.

Post by: Suber on March 08, 2013, 11:57:33 AM
Totally agree, seriously. Let me bring you another battle of the campaign. This was the very first RT scenario in a White Dwarf, I believe; it belongs to WD#94, the battle for Jadeberry Hill. It had this kind of art:

The Orks had to go into the tunnel under the hill, and the marines had to avoid it.

I'm not telling you the special rules for this scenario, as they are for Game Master's eyes only, just in case anyone would like to play it (naive of me? Maybe, but I don't lose the hope of bringing back this game alive). If anyone is interested, just PM me ;).

The game was really, really fun again, exchanging shoots and laughing at the results, with the marines trying to contain the horde.

Maybe the most absurd/hilarious/RT thing about the game is that, during all over the battle, the scores were always negative. The Orks got a score of -5 points and the marines of -3 (having been down all the game, even with a -22 points! ;D)
Have a look at the whole battle here:

(You won't regret, believe me ;), trust old reliable Suber... :D)

Great stuff, I still have my old RT minis and rules.

I played a game last year (without the 40K universe) and had a blast.
Title: Re: Playing 40K RT: New Rynn City Walls
Post by: Suber on March 21, 2013, 10:58:22 AM
New battle today. As the rulebook and White Dwarf provided no more scenarios for Rynn's World, we developed some of our own, this is the first one:
The Orks begin the siege of New Rynn City. But once they have built their mighty Gargant, they realize that its legs are too short to go over the city walls! :D They have to blow up them first. So they will need a Squad standing next to the wall for a whole turn and then roll a 6 in 1D6 to make their 'bom' explode. But there is another problem! The city Mayor has hired some discontented Orks (RT times...), so nobody knows who will they fight for. Both players roll a dice each turn, the one with the highest score controls the Tuncoatz that turn ;D

So let's battle! Crimson Fists had Captain Cortez (before he got that awful 3rd Ed. mini) and a mighty Dreadnought:

It all begun with a massacre, but things didn't turn out well for the Greenskins, as they didn't get any reenforcements (for each killed squad, you roll a dice. With 2+, a new Squad comes to the battle. But rolling a 1 means no further reenforcements will assist you; and that's exactly what happened just at the beginning of turn 2 >:()

Only a single Squad managed to get to the walls and stand there for a whole turn (settin' da bom!), but I rolled a miserable 3 instead of a 6, so it exploded prematurely leaving the walls intact and killing the boyz :'(. The efficient Space Marines managed to kill or disperse the rest, so with no reenforcements, there was nothing to do.

The Turncoatz were on one or other side each turn, so it was real fun; they weren't decisive but made a point of randomness and stupidity. Real RT.

The whole battle and some more pics can be found here:

Let me know if you like it! :)

I love the idea that the Orks build this huge Gargant and then when they're done they realise the legs aren't long enough. That's very Orky.

Your battle reports really give a sense of the fun and excitement of the games.

I love the idea that the Orks build this huge Gargant and then when they're done they realise the legs aren't long enough. That's very Orky.

And they didn't think of using the Gargant to demolish the walls either! :D

Don't wanna repeat myself every post, but playing RT again is truly refreshing. Each game I play I'm most certain that I don't want to play 40K but RT or 2nd Ed.
In a couple of weeks I'll try to show you another battle, once the Orks get into the City. Dun-dun-dunnnn... ;D

Sorry! I didn't see your question! (need a shame blush emoticon)
We used the rulebook for the first game, the ‘Battle at the Farm’. There were no more scenarios in the book, so we used the WD#94 for the second battle, it was the first ‘expansion’ for the game, the ‘Jadeberry Hill’. Since then, a friend designed the scenarios and acted as Game Master.
In fact, I’m bringing you another battle developed by him, full of RT spirits. He just got inspiration from a TV series (‘Fringe’ in this case) and brought this scenario to life. Just as things were made back in time.
Crazy Mekboy Waaagh’tek Bigshokk (;)) conducted some experiments on young Orklings with some kind of Squid drug called ‘Kortaxifan’ to enhance their mental abilities. Some of the younglings developed extraordinary psychic skills.
This morning, Waaagh’tek Bigshokk and his Gretchin assistant Aztrig misteriously teleported to the human city under siege. Da Kortaxifan Boyz will have to infíltrate the city and retrieve their ‘father’…
There were lots of crazy fun special rules. The Ork squad had some psi-powers, and lose them randomly each time they took a casualty. But they managed to get mind control over humans (wich begun to shoot each other!). Each turn the Mekaniak was just fiddling with buttons on his ‘Teleporta Field Device’ so he randomly appeared in different parts of the city, while his ‘children’ were looking for him from here to there, fighting against the corporate guards from Massive Dynamics and the Space Marines reinforcements.
Here you have some pics.

I have a complete report here:

I have also noted down all the special rules, in case anyone wants to play the scenario. Read them ONLY if you are the GM, the players must not know some pieces of information! ;)

Hope you like it, for me it was the most exhilataring game I can remember. Let me know if you fancy playing it!

This is the last battle in this campaign, the final Ork assault on the human city. Marines will have to hold the spaceport as long as they can and allow the civilians to escape. Orks will have to... just act Orky.

Our GM designed some crazy rules. Orks had a Gargant to provide ordnance during the game. At the end of each Ork turn, the Gargant opens fire. Buuuut... Ork comm systems don't work as well as Greenskins would like, so heavy interferences make it possible that the shot doesn't aim at the designed target...
The Game Master would set the artillery template blindly, following indications from both players. Yup, both Ork and Imperial players begun to shout 'Right, right -left, left! Not so much!' and so for 5 secs. The GM did whatever he heard -or more likely whatever he wanted, as it was absolutely impossible to follow any instructions amongst that cacophony.
Advice: this activity is not reccomended for shy players, freshly newcomers to a gaming group, people aware of what the neighbours will think or in general any grown-up people. Thanks Gork and Mork that wasn't our case :D

Ork technology proved to be quite messy. During a teleportation action, an Ork squad suffered the Warp risks and one of them was possessed by a demon!

We had some fun moments, the most memorable was when the Ork Buggy made a 'die hard' ram attack on the Space Marine Land Speeder.

Well, it was totally great, I always recommend playing RT, not the current game. More fun, more story, more soul.
The whole report is here:

Let's see if I now dare to go on 2nd Ed (that's the farthest Edition I plan to play) ;)

Fantastic looking games, I started just before the switch to 2nd Ed so I haven't played more then two or three RT games but I loved them. It's such a shame they went with the direction they did with the rules.
