New project!
I've been asked by Andy at Ainsty Castings to make up a range of buildings to update his 'Old City' range. I'm thinking I can make up some basic levels and have a lot of different bits n bobs to change the style/height/layout of the structure.
Here's my ideas so far...
My idea would allow buildings of any height by adding more levels. I would have different styles of windows and doors that could be added on, chimney stacks for the side and different roofs to top it off! It would make building a city so easy! So here's my question....Is there anything I can add to this or anything you would like to see done?
Here's what I've started so far(still WIP)....
These are one of the base units I've built and a set of covered stairs that could be added to the side of any building.
The brick work is just cut up blue foam, which has its edges taken off by rolling it between your hands, then it's covered in polyfilla to act as the mortar.
Oh.. I also started some work for the 'knockers' for the doors....
Cheers for looking!
-
Nice "knockers" :D
-
How did I know that would be the first comment ::)
Now if I were a gambling man.....
-
They look great! And just when I'm getting into this building 'thing' :)
-
Looks like a terrific idea! Looking forward to seeing this develop.
So here's my question....Is there anything I can add to this or anything you would like to see done?
Signs! Tavern signs, blacksmith signs, signs for the fishmonger, butcher, baker, brothel, Fighters' Guild, apothecary,
adventurers' provisions store, hedge wizard, armour merchant...
Would be the winning touch to personalise your buildings (and others') even more, IMO. 8)
-
Brilliant stuff!
-
Excellent start and great idea
-
Looking good so far :-* :-* :-*
-
Bloody lovely brickwork! This looks like the start of something great.
-
Is there anything I can add to this or anything you would like to see done?
Bits wise: maybe some of those pulleys (+ crane hooks), like you still can find on older merchant houses, granaries and harbour buildings?
-
Fantastic!!
How about some type of 'store front'? Or possibly dormer windows?
Might be too 'modern' though.
-
Now THIS is a good idea. I'm actually surprised no one's done modular tudor/medieval buildings previously.
Some more items to vary shape would be good. Perhaps a version of your "ground floor" that has a recessed doorway, or other sort of recessed area that units could hide in.
Also add-ons that can be tacked on to the outside, such as that wing you created. Maybe another section with a flat top and a balcony, or even an open shed. For higher levels maybe a balcony?
-
Very nice so far, My main suggestion would be to do some of the main building blocks with one side consisting of a separate wall so you can put two together to make larger buildings, maybe you could also do a separate interior wall to divide the two up. Or better still provide a floor and four walls that are interchangable?
Other ideas, wooden beam base structure to build a market house/open blacksmiths, interior details, like fireplaces etc. keep the fantasy elements optional so the building can be used as medieval etc.
Will definitely get some of these to add to my scratch built buildings.
-
Interesting! I'll be watching this with interest.
As far as casting goes, how well do the materials you're using work with the process? They are similar to the materials I use, and this is something I've always been curious about.
-
Lots of great ideas we will definately incorporate a lot of these.
The Old City Range was a popular seller previously, being made up from modular units which meant you could have many different combinations of buildings, but I pulled it from the site last year as the moulds were past best and I didnt have the masters from when I took over Ainsty. Andy was an obvious choiced to reinvent this range for me and I am very excited about getting it going again.
Andy
-
So I assume these will be resin?
(I would hope for hardfoam like the Ziterdes stuff, but I guess that's unlikely)
-
Rah!!!
I kept trying to talk Mike into adding modular bits like this to the range. I said it would make it more attractive...
I'm defn up for buying more parts[1]...
( Please bring back the old components as well though!! )
"keep the fantasy elements optional" -- this. I'm after using them for fantasy, medieval, ECW and through to WW2.
What about dormer windows to add to the roofs? And a roof connector section so you can do T shaped buildings with a roof junction?
[1] Presuming enjobification at the time.

Signs. That's a good one! I'll get some different ones done. Some you can paint writing on and others of a more 3D nature.

No probs! Things to change the basic building shape! Check!

I'll do my best to keep bits historical although I'd say my style is a bit cartoony/fantasy.
Thanks for all the great ideas guys! For the casting, I've made a bit of chimney stack which will act as a test piece to make sure everything will go ok!
I've also finished one of the doors. I'll make at least 3 interchangable doors...

Thanks for all your help guys!
-
that's a very promising work!
Those are clearly not-historical looking walls, but for a fantasy settings are just... perfect! With the filler in the gaps they just look awesome!
-
Great looking stuff and the modular idea is brilliant.
When moulded and cast will the buildings be solid pieces or will the interior spaces be usable?
-
This is a great idea. I can't wait for these to be available. Some of us aren't as clever as Theomar Pius.

My guess is hollow. Mostly to save on moulding costs, but the gaming opportunities are a nice bonus there.
To build on my previous comment, I'd like to just add a general bit of advice to try and keep "fun for gaming" in the back of your mind somewhere (hence my suggestions for recessed areas and variations on shape). Placing a bunch of rectangles on a board to form a town is alright - and certainly you DO need some plain squares/rectangles (honestly, that's accurtae for many medieval/tudor buildings). But having more irregular shapes and levels will offer more possibilities for gameplay.
It's tough to balance, I know. Too wild and you lose the modular aspect.
I do like that suggestion about having some way of combining buildings. Not sure how well that'll work out though - something to think about after the basic building shapes are done!
-
Cheers guys!

I'm going to send a couple of bits to Andy this week to try. I'm hoping they'll be hollow, I'm building the floors in the bottom of these.
@Fram- I've got a couple of wee ideas, since I seen your last comment mate. I'll do my best!
-
Greeeeat work so far! :-* :-*
-
All will be hollow and we may even get some new interior pieces to fill them
-
Great stuff, Andy.
:-*
You definitely have a recognisable style now.
:D
In bound PM regarding these.
;)
-
These are bloody beautiful! Very promising indeed. Keen to see this line develop.
-
Great ideas and executions; really good reasons to follow this thread. May I suggest to keep an eye on some architectural basic rules even when working on fantasy buildings? The corner stones have to be of some believable thickness to prevent the house from destruction ... :)
-
Awesome would love to see more!

Any reference I can find, Admiral, doesn't seem to show it much different from what I'm doing.

Do you mean the corner stones should protrude a bit more from the wall or should the whole wall be thicker or should the corner stones just be a lot bigger than the other brickwork?
Cheers for the nice comments guys!
Here's the insides. I've kept it pretty basic. You probably can't see it in my crappy photo, but there is wood grain, planks and nails inscribed onto the plastic card floor/skirting!

I think this piece is finished. A second doors also been done....

Cheers for looking!
-
Wow. Impressive indeed.
-
Some impressive work there, Andy!
That stonework is really well done and as for that skirting: I have seen modern houses looking less well tended.
:-* :-* :-*
-
These are going to be great.
-
Love this, the patience to do it brick by brick is impressive.
-
Lovely!
Very inspirational!

This coming from the builder of one of thee best boards ever!! ;)
Cheers guys!
My thinking with the other levels is going to be roughly the same as for the ground floors, ill leave the fixtures separate. So I'll do different styles of windows, double and single that'll fit into the same spaces on the model. It's only are start for ideas and I'm afraid it's in pencil....
I found this on the net as well which I find very inspirational for this part. The windows in the top middle pic are different from anything I'd seen before...
And here's the start of one of the upper levels...
I'll put some more timber down the sides.
-
Beautiful. :-* Can see I'm going to need a lot of these.
-
Lovely will definitely use a few of these in my new project.
For further inspiration you could look here: http://www.wealddown.co.uk/
Just down the road from me, I am going there in a couple of weeks for researching some buildings I wish to make, if you like I could publish them as a thread here.
-
Superb Andy!

Those columns on the bottom right actually remind me of Ratniks Breugelburg cannon! That's a good association! lol
-
Cheers guys!
@Elysium64- that's some good stuff on that site mate! Thanks! Feel free if you want to post it.
@Fram- I'll try and get some different styles of chimney for the top of the stacks and to add on to the roof.
-
Saying that your work here is going on the right direction, that it's great, you're producing a beautiful house, etc... would only evidence my lack of words to describe the magnificent job you are doing. :-* :o
-
Excellent work there Andy, bringing your usual style to the project. Almost time to give up the day job! :)
-
Any reference I can find, Admiral, doesn't seem to show it much different from what I'm doing.

Sorry for the delay, Andy. I didn't keep in mind that you would fill in some of the joints, so now everything looks fine. Protruding corner stones could be an alternative or variation.
:)
-
Thanks very much guys!!

I would love to! :D ;)
Just a wee update. The first of the upper floors is pretty much finished. Just a bit of tidying here and there. I've also made the first of my windows. This will end up being the most basic design. I'll try something a bit more ambitious next...

VERY NICELY DONE! Your door(s) & windows are OUTSTANDING.

Cracking stuff Mr M!

Stoning work matey 8) :-*

Polyfilla is just your average plaster, gap filler bud. Pollyfilla on the other hand is stuff Taxidermists use to stuff dead parrots! ;) :D
Sorry, bad joke!!
Once you make up the bricks it doesn't take that long. I wouldn't say much longer than other methods with foam. I wasn't accurate with my sizes. I just cut a bundle of bricks, rub them between my hands to take the edges off, viola! I used to scribe my brickwork into foam, but I prefer the look of this.
VERY NICELY DONE! Your door(s) & windows are OUTSTANDING.
Cheers man! I'm going to try and get a bit fancier with some other stuff and try and make single and double doors that can be stuck on the outside of buildings as well. I was also looking at a lot of Tudor furniture pics.....
Cheers guys!!
-
I'm getting a bit further with this now. I've finished the first attic section. Where the roof runs front to back on this one, others the roof will go side to side. I didn't think it was worth putting support beams in the loft space, my thinking is that would take up too much room...

I made a bit of an arse with my measuring!!! :-[ The first base section is away to Andy, to try casting. My problem being, I hadn't thought about stacking the upper levels properly!! The first upper floor section I've done had support beams running horizontally across the bottom AND top, when you stack that you end up with a double beam between floors, so I've cut the top one off! This means it now looks right. Now my only problem is I planned to have the levels a standard size, allowing me to make 'one size fits all' levels allowing me to make a chimney stack section, etc in only one height! Now I'll have to have bits that go with the base units and bits that go with the upper levels!! :'(
Here's some other wee bits as well...

This is one of the new windows I'm working on. I've still to do the frame of the window in green stuff, so here's my question....I was planning on doing arches and stuff to make it look fancy, but this won't allow it to be reversible, should I just stick with a simpler, square-ish frame to allow it to be turned upside down?

Most oriel windows are arched but bollocks to it mate, it's for fantasy as well and I'm sure no one else would notice :)
cheers
James

Liking your progress!

EXCELLENT! The trap door & the turret window look WONDERFUL!

It's missing a bit of something right now, but I think if you divide it with purely vertical beams (mullions, I think they're called?), with slightly thicker ones where it meets the wall it should look just fine.
-
Impressive work :-*
-
looking great :-* :-* :-*
But they need to looking a bit more piratety :D

Do two?
One reversible with square frames, one non-reversible with arches?
-
Ok, a few different varieties it is then. This ones just a rough wooden square-ish frame. I still need to do the reverse side....

Drool...

yeah! :-* I missed this thread. Great quality here.
Interesting project to follow. Keep going Andy!

Mould for the test pieces made today

I'd be interested in just the windows and doors.

Wow, looking good. Nice detail in the windows!

Thanks guys! I'm going to try and get a few different ones on the go. I started work on one of the double sized windows. These will fit into the two single slots for the windows and hide the bit of wall in between. Still WIP, I've got to finish the front frames and roof....

Seconded! :)
-
You lovely Scottish genius. I don't even play fantasy stuff much and I want these :)
-
Oh, I'll be wanting these when they're ready! :o
-
Absolute fantastic!!!!!
My best compliments.
-
Thanks guys! I'll do my best to live up to those standards!!!
I've finished one of the more tedious bits, one side of a roof. And I've also completed another upper level to. Making hundreds of roof tiles is a right royal pain in the bum, but I like the irregular look of cutting them yourself. I've also put some beams on the inside of the roof. You can't really see, because everything thing is in white plastic, but I have cut a wood grain into the plastic on anything that's supposed to be timber. Hopefully this will all be worth it when it comes to painting these in the future!!! o_o o_o
Roof half way through...

I'm dying to try a base section on this set up, I'm just waiting for it back from Andy. I hope it looks the part with it on!
-
Cracking work mate :-* :-*
Go on, put a coat of primer on it, you know you want to lol
cheers
James
-
Stunning.
-
Really, really nice. You are indeed an incredibly talented bloke!
-
I cannot wait for these to be released.
-
8) Cracking work, looking forward to the release :)
-
Hot stuff! :o ;D Love the detail your putting into it!
Nice work making individual roof tiles!! Thats mad determination.
An out there idea to dismiss like a fart in an elevator... Would it be worth makking the windows see through since your putting floors in there and heaps of inside detail work? ???rather than painting the windows "glass" Colour? Mold holes and then provide an acetate or something with the kit??
Amazing work, it has so much character! :-*
-
Great stuff, Andy.
I love those windies, gotta have some of those when they come out!
(I dont even have any plans for more buildings just yet, but these are so good I just want to use them).
:-*
It may be worth mentioning that, (when they are released) it would be a good idea to list the dimensions of each piece in the catalogue, for those that scratchbuild their own stuff but would like to use some of your fine work in their carbuncles.
;)
-
Oh, it has an internal loft! You beauty!
Any plans for a partially ruined roof section or balcony, basically summat to get skirmishes firing through/from?

That windows idea is probably a good one! I'll do a simple one, like the first square window I did, without glass and I'll do a ruined one too. I think people can maybe add their own clear plastic to act as broken/unbroken panes of glass. Cheers for that!
The original remit was to update the 'Old City' range. It had a lot of ruined building parts in it. I'll do ruined upper floors and roofs and stuff like that guys...

As long as we ALSO get the original bits back in production.. I need a load more of them...

REALLY sorry for the threadomancy! I've been waiting for a couple of test castings to come back and I've had a couple of other wee things on the go!! Anyway time to get this done!!
So Ainsty has the first of the 1st Floors and a window. So far that's 3x 1st Floors, 1x Ground Floor and now 2x roofs. I've also made up a see through window.

I had a MAJOR accident with one of the roof sections!! Over time they warped! I tried using a hairdryer and bending them back, but one broke!! :'( :'( I now turned that part into the first ruined section seen as it was WAY beyond repair!

Those are a lovely set of knockers you have sculpted on those doors.
and those windows, :o wow! :-*
Good recovery on the roof, but it's a shame it happened at all. :'(
Cheers

Loving all the detail work :)

Brilliant stuff.

GREAT WORK! I LOVE the windows & doors.

This is incredible! It is the very type of house I have been looking for for my Gierburg table. All those individual taverns and stables and what not are nice and all and good for adding scenery to an army game board but they don't work for setting up a proper skirmish level table with narrow alleyways and stuff. This is exactly what we need. I can't wait for these to be released a I will be sure to buy at least a few of these.
If you are still looking for inspiration for variety, I really love the half-hipped roof and bardgeboard on one of Stronghold-Terrain's house fronts:

Something like this would be super sweet for these too!

Cheers gentlemen!
I've got a wee small update on a couple of bits. Nothing dramatic, just another tiled roof half done, a double chimney, a wee metal chimney and a bit more of the side chimney stack.
