Title: Contents of RAFM Space 1889 Box Set
Post by: XCIV on February 25, 2013, 07:12:34 PM
Can anyone tell me what the contents of the Legions of Mars Box set is? RAFM's site has no photos of it, and no description of contents.

$29.95 on literally blind faith is a bit beyond me at this point.

You get a leader figure with sword and 1860's Navy Colt, about 4-5 Shield Gunners in armour, a Gashant and rider, 5-6 Martians with halberd-like weapons, 5 Martians with muskets and a bunch of figures in helmets with the fantastically named 'Coddling Choppers'.

It's about 20 miniatures all told, although I have a set I bought from RAFM and a donation from Dewkabuk (thanks, guv'nor!), so I forget what goes with which. They paint up really well and have stood the test of time. Well worth buying.

But they are tiny compared with every other figure manufacturer.

Not every manufacturer. The smaller, older Foundry stuff isn't far off and the Perry stuff tends to be a little on the small side. Plus, who says Martians can't be smaller than humans?

Personally, I wouldn't buy the humans though due to the size and we already know I gave the Martians away  ;)

I am looking to fill in a few cracks in my Martian forces.

I mix RAFM with Parroom, just not in the same units.

Plus, I use the old many races of Barsoom trick. Different sizes? Pffffffttt. All the canal Martians from around Mons Olympus are that size. Everyone knows that!

There are 20 pieces in the box. 18 foot figures, 1 Gashant plus rider. The Martians were large for when they came out so they fit in nicely with a lot of newer stuff. I think there were only 3 maybe 4 sheild gunners per box. I bought 10 boxes years ago when they were going out of prodution the first time.

I always took the gashant w/ rider to be the leader, mounted. *shrug*

As the Martians, especially the Hill Martians, showed a strong sculpt influence, nay, copying from himself, of elven figures, I oft look upon larger elf figs for possible replacement.

Not sure how I feel about Martian 'stunties', though...  ;)

PS Of course! Those diminished natives are obviously showing the detrimental effects of outside influences! Drive out the corrupting Red Devils!

This.  The GDW Martians are much larger than the humans they were released with, and will scale just fine with 28mm humans.

They used to scale up well with the metal GW Wood Elves, particularly the Wardancers (especially the figures with the Mohawk hairstyles - the original Space 1889 Soldiers Companion book even shows some of them painted as Martians).

Martians are oft portrayed as tall but skinny, due to the lower gravity.

I like 'em that way, but, we are but pawns in the manufacturers' complex game. lol
