I've gotten through my first fire team of Eisenkern Stormtroopers and put my thoughts and pictures up on my blog:
First is a review of the stormtrooper box: http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-games-20-x-stormtrooper-box.html (http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-games-20-x-stormtrooper-box.html)
Next is a review of the accessory box: http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-games-stormtrooper-accessory.html (http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-games-stormtrooper-accessory.html)
Last is a write up of my first fire team: http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-eisenkern-fire-team-built.html (http://thecolorblindmodelpainter.blogspot.com/2013/02/dreamforge-eisenkern-fire-team-built.html)
Here are some pics of the finished fire team. I just wish I knew how to work my camera better so I could fix the field of focus.

Awesome. These look rather good!
-
Really like the paint scheme.
Simple yet effective!
-
Thanks for the review. Nice effective paint job on them and good conversions, especially liking the shortened rifle you did. Regarding the AT launcher/panzerfaust, back in the WW2 the panzerfaust was a singleshot, disposable AT weapon, maybe that's why the kit doesn't have any reloads for it either.
-
cracking Stuff again Roger :P Are they only "Sturmtruppen" in the Box,No "Kriegsmarine" then?
-
Cool! Real Space Marines! :)
-
ar very good nice models and paint work

Yes, only the generic stormtroopers so far. I imagine if you wanted to do Kriegsmarine or some other elite unit you could get it with different paint jobs or head swaps. Ski2060 from Dakka did an Ada in an awesome splinter camouflage:
http://ski2060.blogspot.com/2013/02/progress-despite-my-schedule.html (http://ski2060.blogspot.com/2013/02/progress-despite-my-schedule.html)
If I can find some good looking jet packs (i.e. ones that don't look like they came off of a space marine) I'd like to do some fallschirmjäger in the future with all SMGs.
Cool! Real Space Marines! :)
Oh, I thought that was Space MarinesTM now? ;D
-
A bit more in depth than my review! Nice pjs.
-
Easily the best sci-fi plastics in a long while. :-*
-
i must be odd, but i really dont like these at all!
-
Mine arrived today - beautiful minis. Fell in love with them the moment I saw the renders, and the final models live up to the hype completely. I love doing minor conversions to personalise my plastics, so the accessories sprue is like Christmas!
Minor gripe 1 - the Post Office will take a credit or debit card as proof of ID, but not to actually pay the customs charge - I had to pay in cash. WHYYYYY?
Minor gripe 2 - as everyone mentions, the cargo mules look a right pain to assemble. Three pieces for each leg? :'(
Minor gripe 3 - I would have liked some more SF-style weapons. Not keen on the Panzerfaust at all.
Majorsmith - what is it you don't like? The accessories pack comes with a number of unhelmeted heads, if it's the German-style helmets.
-
Thanks for the kudos rwwin. ;)
I'm still working on Ada. Final highlighting is going down with some VMC Middlestone over that VMA Dark Yellow, and it's looking good for all my meager talent.
I'm doing a Kriegsmarine unit with the older metal figures from Dreamforge for my SoTR 1949 Droptrooper army. That is, until the Iron Core rules come out. The Ada models I have are going to be used to fill out the squads with AT rifles.
I preferred the look of them over the stormtroopers, just looked a little more like drop troops.
I picked up one of the accessory boxes for the stormtroopers, and will be customizing my guys with all the awesome gribblies that come in that box.
I'm hoping that at some point in the future a Kriegsmarine box, or at least conversion box, will come out for them from DFG.
-
momotaro, im just not struck by them, maybe a lack of originality, they look a bit weeny as well, i must admit i like the more heroic sized figures, and wargames factory have pretty much done a set which look like nazis in space.
-

I've been out of historical WWII modeling for over a decade. I can't remember what was distinctive about the Kriegsmarine that you'd need a conversion set?

I can dig that. I know when I saw the kickstarter, my first reaction was "Ugh, not more space nazis!" From an aesthetic point of view, they are far from original, but damn they are well made. As far as heroic proportions go, there's a fine balance between reality and visual appeal and I think these models are closer to the sweet spot than what GW is producing nowadays.

I was referring to the DFG Kriegsmarine models from the first kickstarter for metal infantry models.
They have a different helmet, backpack, and armor styling than the DFG Stormtrooper models.
The models, and a comparison shot with the stormtrooper model :

Ah, I hadn't pledged to the first campaign and didn't realize they were different. Yes, some of those alternate bodies and back packs would be cool.
-
Are the metal ones available anywhere?
-
Not anymore that I know of. Mark may have some left over, but I thought they all sold out.

I got hold of a box of troopers on Sunday and must say that they are very sharp. I was a little disappointed that there were only the standard rifles in the box... but apart from that they are lovely looking minis (I will be getting the upgrade box to add a bit of variety at some point).
-
Shame about the rifles - though the accessory box looks pretty brilliant (and appeared to me to be a "must buy" if you do invest in the troopers).
I really need to come up with an excuse to buy these...dammit! lol
-
Very nice PJ (and on the metal too; and your right - they look good with the Striders!). I've got mine and started a few conversions and building a couple of Mules (fiddly build on the legs, yes, but doable). Pics on the blog.... http://dwartist.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/an-eisenkern-passenger.html
-
I've got my first mule finished. I used the "smart mule" head and gave it a couple of interchangeable pallet loads. One is Class V (ammunition) and one is Class I (Food & Water). Mark was dead on saying that the kit was fiddley, those tiny leg parts took a bit of patience to get together. I stronlgy recomend his tip to assemble the legs first and then attach them to the body.

Very cool...and oddly i think you could use that Mule for some pretty cool 6mm-10mm sci-fi stuff too (as a gigantic loader etc.)
-
Looks great - and a much better photo of a trooper

Thanks. High praise indeed. I must admit that I'm too lazy to read that 2" thick manual that came with my camera, so I put it on auto and hope for the best. I'm never sure how pictures are going to turn out.
-
Trick is to turn on your Macro setting - much better for small/close up work. Works a treat.
-
All of my pictures were taken with the macro setting. The problem I run into is with the auto focus.
-
No fan of "Space Nazis" but these look good enough to make an exception if I used this scale which I unfortunately don't.
Great work on all the figures.
Gracias,
Glenn

You must have picked up the ten man Rifle Squad? the 20 man Stormtrooper set has the other weapons.
@RWWIN Love the trooper and the mules!
@DOZING DRAGON Sorry those are OOP for now... They may see plastic some day but that will likely be some years.

I'm back with a little progress on my warthog conversion. I've now got an A-Driver finished and the gunner with dual machine guns in the mock up stage. More pics and info on my blog:

-
Very nice, good work on it.

That looks great!

It's been a long slog but I've managed to finish my stormtrooper support weapons. The kit wasn't quite as nice to work with as the basic infantry kit, but The results were still worthwhile. I've put a full review and more pictures on my blog.

I've finally taken the plunge and am starting work on my Leviathan Crusader. This thing is a beast, but very well designed and broken down. I've got the leg internals built and painted and now I'm moving on to the feet and armor. I don't think I'll ever see this thing on the tabletop, but it should still be pretty impressive on the shelf. More at my blog:

Yeah, when I first spotted it at a convention...I did think it was a bit "comically" big. I don't know when you'd use it - perhaps on one of those 30' long convention games or something. It reminded me of the WH40K Armorcast titans/gargants...neat models but useless for gaming.
-
Great start with the Leviathan Crusader! It will be an impressive sight to see.
Just wondering about another matter... could one of those machineguns used in the four-mg support weapon work as a support weapon for the troopers without too much cutting and slicing?

Thanks.
I don't believe it would be easy to turn one of the quad machine guns into a support weapon. They are cast as a pair of two, top and bottom, so it would be a pain in the rear to cut them apart. There are plenty of spare machine guns on the two infantry kits though.

I've got the feet done. One small step for killer robots everywhere....

Have you thought about the markings for it?

Thanks. I've been thinking through some ideas but nothing firm yet. Right now I'm leaning towards something spare, like simple black or white ID markings.

I've now got the upper torso together. I've had to give up on the idea of detailing a cockpit and pilot, but I did manage to magnetize the extra exhaust parts that came with the kickstarter. Torso is in painting now and should be done by the end of the week.
This has been a fascinating build. Mark Mondragon's take on mold design, coupled with the innovative slide mold technology that Wargames Factory has used have created a new way of making parts. Take the gothic vent stacks in the picture below. They are made with a stacked set of round parts. On any other kit I've built over the years (Bandai, Tamiya, Hasegawa) these would have been cast in halves along the vertical axis and wouldn't have been able to acheive the deep detail in the grooves. It's not a perfect solution as now you have horizontal seams versus vertical seams, but it's an interesting take on the process nonetheless. I thought about puttying the joints, but I'll wait to see if the primer coat makes them blend a little more. I've looked at some pictures of painted Leviathans without any work on the joints and they don't stick out too bad.

"I've had to give up on the idea of detailing a cockpit and pilot" why?
-
"I've had to give up on the idea of detailing a cockpit and pilot" why?
My explanation won't make a whole lot of sense unless you look at the instruction sheet (steps 36 & 37 in the lower right hand corner):
http://www.dreamforge-games.com/Revised%20Leviathan%20Crusader%20Instructions.pdf (http://www.dreamforge-games.com/Revised%20Leviathan%20Crusader%20Instructions.pdf)
Here is the challenge as I see it. I had built the upper torso to step 36 where the roof goes on (part G2). In the next step you attach the "chest" part (J1) which sandwiches in the "face" part (I01). There is just enough room to put a decent 1/48 scale cockpit between the chest and face. At this point there is still enough room to slide the face part in and out. But then you add an extention to the roof (G1) which locks the face part in place.
Here's a couple of pics:
Here's the torso dry fitted together. As you can see the face (green part) gets locked in to the torso (primed black) by Part G1 (unprimmed).
Here are the face and top part removed and a possible donor cockpit from an old 1/48 Mig-29 kit. To make a cockpit that you could actually see after completion, you'd need to make part G2 magnetized, hinged or in some way removable so that you could get the face cover off.
Another option would be to glue part G2 directly to the top of the face so that they could be removed as a single piece.
It's all workable, I just wasn't sure I could pull it off.
-
hmmm...
-
I'd say just find a way to pin or mount the locking collar (the unprimed top piece) so it can be removed or pivoted up or out when you want to show off the cockpit. Or...failing that I'd put some lenses in the eye-slits and put an LED inside (plenty of room for batteries in that huge model). Then you'd have neat glowy eyes. I think amber would go well with the scheme you have going.
-
More progess on the Leviathan Crusader. I've got the torso painted along with the sword arm. I magnetized the arm so that you can swap between the standard sword and the special one that came with the kickstarter rewards. More info and pictures at my blog:

Love the muted colours and the weathering.

Looks great, the tank decals are a fine choice, they make it look a lot more military like in my eyes.
I'm looking forward to seeing it finished

Thanks everyone!

DONE!
Well not really, done-done, as I still have the base, the original smoke stacks and the left cannon arm, but done enough for now. Between Scout camp with my boys and three weeks at my parents house, I'll be cold turkey on hobby time for at least a month, so the crusader came in under the wire.
A more detailed write up on my blog, but this was a great kit all around.

Fantastic job all around. I'm cursing you because I now want that model. I don't need more projects, dammit.

What a wonderful job you've done, just excellent.

You can be really proud of that! Nice subtle paintwork.
