Title: new 20mm models with an african theme from s&s models
Post by: sandsmodels on February 27, 2013, 12:09:21 PM
hi all
we have an african theme to the first new releases of the year at s&s models
some of these are re-releases others are brand new and some have been waiting to be released for a while now.
first up is the olifant 1a mbt:-
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/new%20projects/DSCN3982.jpg)
this is the good old cent upgraded with a new engine, same sort as the israeli one so the engine deck is the same and a few other mods, could easily be used for an israeli cent, except for the rear turret stowage box, but we do have an israeli one ready to be moulded as well if you can wait ;)
next the ratel apc range, we have 4 versions so far:-
the ratel 90mm,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/new%20projects/DSCN4130.jpg)
the 20mm,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/new%20projects/DSCN4125.jpg)
the ratel 60mm,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/new%20projects/DSCN4135.jpg)
and the ratel command,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/new%20projects/DSCN4127.jpg)
now some suitable trucks, the iveco/samil 100 6x6,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/modern%2020mm%20vehicles/DSCN3194.jpg)
the iveco truck was originaly a german design used by west germany  widley used in africa and was licenced produced for the south african army as well as sold on the civilian market.
typical african mud huts,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/usefull%20bits%20and%20pieces/DSCN4691.jpg)
a small range of african mud huts given a more modern feel with not only a thatched roof but also some with a tarpaulin or corrugated iron roof or both.
to go with these new huts we also have some mud walling go make your village a bit more real,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/usefull%20bits%20and%20pieces/DSCN4692.jpg)
and some new armed african adults in the form of  some dismounted tank/afv crew,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/20mm%20figures/SampSMilitiaAFVcrew.jpg)
we have more armed african adults planned for 2013,
now onto the water with some new boats, ideal for fishing or pirates,
(http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t339/sandsmodels/usefull%20bits%20and%20pieces/SampSBoatsbow.jpg)
there are 3 types, the 2 pictured either open or with 2 bulkheads and a third one with a forward cab with separate roof,
so enough there to go on with until about april may when we will have a new range of separate head figures (the choice of head type will be quite big), suitable for a lot of cold war era armies including african ones as well as lots more cold war gb vehicles & tank/afv crews
anyone wanting a new list just email me
sales@sandsmodels.com
and i will gladly email you one back asap,
thanks

Ahem....

IVECO is Italian not German... it was a corporation created by the merge of the FIAT industrial Vehicle Division , Lancia truck (so they could just produce cars for the rich and stupid and no more seriouz things like the IZM...), OM (Officine Meccaniche) a truck company from italy, Magirus (german) and Unic (Unic chenilletes!) from France.

Now to solve the mystery... Samil took the license from Magirus before the Merge, so it is a Magirus Deutz/Samil not an IVECO!

By the way IVECO is part of FIAT like almost everything in Italy!

Well if you want an Iveco/ Magirus/ Samil 20 truck in 28mm Solido produce the very item in 1/50, it even has sand channels on the sides of the body. It comes with a silly little clear blue light atop the cab but that's easily lopped off.

we do have a small range of 28mm models but frankly the slaes of these compared to 20mm is pathetic so hence no new 28mm models planned for a while.
sorry but not enough interest in it for us.

The 3rd generation Magirus "Eckhauber" or later Iveco was never used by the Bundeswehr, Shaun. It was only for civilian use or military versions for export from 1971 onwards. They used to sell 7000 or so dump trucks of that type to the Soviet Union in one go for railway construction in Siberia too.
The vast use of the Magirus in Africa and Siberia is due to their air cooled Deutz engines which couldn´t suffer from evaporated or frozen cooling liquids.
But nice to see that truck again. There are only very few remaining as snow ploughs where I live.

Another 'the Emperor has no clothes on' moment. I often see models and think "I'd love one of those in 28mm", but that's the point... I'd want one, or at the very extreme three or four in some few cases.

yes it is a case of that.
we do have a 20+ club, (like our 15+ club) for 28mm models but even smaller vehicles like the m-atv has not got to 10 let alone 20 units so far.
we have had a few people say they want something but then never buy any, this does happen with 20mm but the other sales are off setting this.
a good example of this is our 28mm modern stowage, when we did the 20mm version lots of gamers  said we want this in 28mm, but the sales have been small compared to 20mm, most orders now for 20mm vehicles include 1 or 2 pks of stowage, but i can't remember when i last span the 28mm stowage mould!
28mm models are so much bigger so moulds and casting is so much higher and gamers buy so much less as you do not want too many big afv's on the table as it is not bigg enough.
i have been asked a lot for a cougar 6 or mastiff mrap but time taken and the cost of it does not convince me to do one as yet, it would have to retail at about £25-30 ea & p+p.
thanks
