Title: Sinewgrab's New All-Encompassing VSF Topic (what's this? an update?!)
Post by: Sinewgrab on February 28, 2013, 01:04:59 AM
So, to be honest, I am a lazy twaddle at heart, and due to the likelihood that I will be using the entirety of my VSF collection as a single gaming army soon (in a FUBAR campaign), I decided to start a single topic in which all of my updates for VSF stuff will go.  For those who wish to look up old stuff, check here:

VSF Norway

And now, to make up for the boring stuff, since a large number of voices have been raised wanting a group shot, here is the best I can do at the moment...and it took me a while to set up.  I didn't realize how much I had collected, and then when I realized that there are still 10 unfinished Lennsmenn cavalry, 30 or so unfinished Lennsmenn on foot, 5 clanks, 2 new 'scout' sized 'nefs, and other odds and ends...

And 3 slightly closer versions...

And for those who are sharp, yes there are some unseen by LAF eyes models here.

My Bulette with Howdah, used by the Lennsmann to move supplies from town to town.  The big females keep their mated males docile with pheromones.  I built it with some  plates I got from Ramshackle.

The Norwegians, tired of being fried where they stood by the Cephalopod Heat Rays, built their own.
Made from a pair of cannon I bought off Ebay that turned out to be much larger than I thought, so could not be used for the original purpose, now have a disc and a pen-end glued on.

And for the long range fight,  a slightly repainted Warmachine gun: the Jotun Cannon.

I highly approve.  I want to see how you stat these out for FUBAR.

Also, come to Charleston sometime so we can play.

Sinewgrab, you cannot use 'lazy' and that pic is one single post - that's a brilliant contradiction!  :D
I'd seen bits and pieces of the collection in the disparate threads, but the group shot is stunning. Love the artillery, which I'd not seen before.  8) 8) 8)

Man, that's pretty amazing when you put it all together. Not that the bits we've seen haven't been great in their own right, but the total collection (apart from the massive list of things you're still working on!) is quite awe-inspiring.

I second Froggy's call for a visit to Charleston - I'd love to see the photos of that mighty clash!

I'll try and post my stat cards for them here later for you.  I'd love to play you, but you do realize we would have to try to get further away from each other and still be in the contiguous United States, as I am in Beaverton Oregon?

That is actually kinda how I felt when I was putting it all out - did I really convert and paint this many models for this?  Next I need to get my small group shots of the Prussian and Martian forces in here as well.

Landship?  No, good sir, that is the His Majesty's Carrier Aeronef the Gungnir, not some mere landship.  She just sat too high when she was on her stand to get a good shot without shadowing all of the figs below her.

My apologies, my good man.
It was remiss of me to assume that His Majesty would be in possession of a mere landship.
Consider me chastised.

Awesome. I love this army. And I sympathise. I've been painting VSF Dutch for the last three years almost exclusively and have far too many to play in one game. It is a lot of fun though. :)

Maybe you could meet on Route 60, somewhere between Kansas City and Denver? That looks about half-way...

Any LAFers in that vicinity want to offer to host this epic showdown?

Just realized some of my new stuff is in the group with no close-ups...whoops.

Today, while I was waiting for some paint to dry on another piece, I built a quick backdrop to use whenever I am taking photos.  Looks better that way.

And closeup of the Gila Monster Heavy support.  Captured by the Lennsmenn, it provides support for caravans along with the bulettes.  Shortsighted and nearly deaf, thye lumber along eating anything that gets in their way.  They have been known to attack canyon walls, eventually creating a way through due to the stubbornness.

Grrr...

This model is a Giant Squiggoth for the Orks from Forge World.  Nice model.  THe gun is from some where else - the Lyzards Gryn, perhaps?

And here we have some of the more esoteric Mercenary creations - Swordclanks.

These are Dreamblade figures - Sworddancers, I think.

And my prize for today's work, the Scout Aeronef Tanngrisnir.

Scratchbuilt to resemble a small version of Gungnir.  It is both a companion vessel, and acts as a shuttle from the Aeronef carrier to ground forces and back.

Well, on/near I-70, I imagine space could be found at Recruits, April 5-7, 2013 in Lee's Summit, Missouri (Metro KC). VSF_Gamer, Commander_Carnage, and moi would be there salivating...  ;)

And one of the better buys I have made in the last few months.

So, I wanted some wagons, and while I don't have any hitching poles or tackle on them, that is because I couldn't come up with anything that both looked good, and was still able to work with whatever critter I decided to have pull it, which, depending on the game or the scenario, could be a horse, one of my bulettes, or a mechanical something...so I just built a base that has a space for whatever I put there. So long as it has one of my custom cavalry bases, it'll work.

The kicker is, these were $2.95 US each.  Because they are pencil sharpeners.  I pulled the sharpener piece, plugged the hole in the back with a barrel or chest, and poof, here we are.  Are they super detailed?  No, but certainly good enough.  And they scale well.  Here is one pulled by a bulette rider with a soldier escort.

Where do you find them?  You may ask, and...

And I don't know about the whole mett halfway thing - I hated Kansas when we were there for 3 weeks, and I associate Missouri with my best friend's now ex-wife, so I'd rather not see what raised such a two-faced cheating (insert expletive).  Maybe Nebraska? My wife has family in Hayes Center...

Wow, Hayes Center is about as much a jaunt as KC to me, and nearest hub is Denver, I think.

But, we'll keep thinking...

Wagons are a quick and dirty, much to their credit. Good find!

The problem with copper shade is the necessity of a covering of rivets, and on a Conestoga, seems right out. Need to save them for sensible tanks, and armored ducks and bunnies....

PS I will remind all of the WWI Museum in KC,MO. I found it worth a trip on it's own. Even bought a t-shirt!  lol

Coaches are quite well served by wedding cake decorations, and easier to convert, but I suspect the pencil sharpeners are smaller. Prolly good 15mm or such fit.

I will say that looking at the selection of sharpeners has been a bit of an eye-opener. I've found a few on occasion suggesting use, but, when you tend to see a few at a time at truck stops and dime/dollar stores (those in other countries who know geographic-appropriate terms, please speak up), you don't realize how many may be useful, as long as you're willing to fit them to near-appropriate scale and period gaming.

The not-Titanic ship might do service for 1/2400 naval, for instance.

Always good to 'see with new eyes...'

I haven't ordered the stagecoach yet, but I might.

My latest Aeronef creation, Tannsgrisnir, the scout Aeronef used as a shuttle from Gungnor to the ground.  Armed with 2 light cannon.  I built as a small version of Gungnir, and I am quite happy with it, actually.

Great, I'm promoting inter-scalar amity, and you go all scalist on me!  :D

Truly awesome work continues! You'll be needing panoramic photography equipment for future 'group' photos.

And, it'd take a bit of swapping, but would do lovely at 15mm at that.  ;)

That's why I mentioned 15mm. The One True Scale.  ;)

Actually, I am a scale heretic. I game (or plan to game) VSF in four different scales at present. In reality, I have some decent forces for both 15mm and 28mm, a few 1/1200 ships, and the start of my 6mm forces.

Blasphemer.   ;)

I tend to maintain just 28/30mm.  I prefer painting those figures.  I have some 6mm, but only as pieces for my maps.

And it will take some work to get everything into a photo from here on out - it is quickly becoming the single largest gaming project I have ever collected.

Even above my Fallout game, which is 4 bins of terrain, 4 terrain boards, and a hundred or so figures.

So, I am doing a map for a Mars FUBAR campaign using the hexes from Planetary Empires and Mighty Empires from Games Workshop, and I wanted to show where some of the armies will be using Epic/6MM figures.

Then I had an urge...

Made from Balsa wood sticks and the little center bosses from old school GW shields.  I am actually quite proud of hos close I got it, considering it is less than 3/4 inch long.

And we add for the native forces, the Tusken Guardian beasts.  I haven't decided on a name for these yet, though I keep referring to them as Temple Lions.  I need guards for my Shaman, as people realixed that picking him off made the Tuskens easier to fight (in FUBAR, I gave the shaman the special ability to let any native force within 24" use his Activation when rolling to activate - and the difference between a 3+ and a 5+ is significant).

These will be able to absorb some of the shots coming the shaman's way.

Also up today, the latest addition to the Free Norway First - some newer sculpts from Brigade Models.

And my biggest bad boy, the Jotnar.  Luckily, only a few of these wander the mountains of Mars, and while less intelligent than Trolls, they can be trained if you find them early enough.  The natives call them Mountain Kings, but the Norsk call the Jotnars.

This is when I was ambushed with an idea for converting this figure, but I like how this one came out too much to convert, so I started looking for another one.  Prices on these are ridiculous.

Too close!

And for today's lesson in Martian fauna, we introduce the Landhai.  When told by the natives that they tended towards herd behavior, but were most dangerous when they were without the female, Doktor Fabius began investigating how to domesticate them, seeing them as a replacement for the horse in the harsh deserts of the Martian north.  Already adapted to the cold steppes, these creatures she found were controlled by scent glands near the female's hindquarters, and she was able to create an elixir which was similar enough for farmers to raise the beasts safely.

The female lays eggs, which then hatch tiny legged beasts (the anklebiters) which seem to fight among themselves until there are only three left, and then they cluster together.

Later they will begin to outgrow their legs, and start burrowing.  This is an intermediate stage, where the mother will leave the remains of her dinner near these 'chompers' and they will continue to grow below ground.

They emerge, and then began to grow into the ridable beasts we know today.

And best of all, they taste really good. Remember, a safe farmer is a happy farmer. Wipe down with Fabius' Fabulous elixir before doing your chores.

I don't create monsters - I create ecologies.

The little ones are from Angel Barracks, the next size up is a group of 'Chompers' from the Privateer Press Monsterpocalypse game, and then we have some D&D mini that had no discernable head, so I pressmoulded the heads of the chompers and cast those to add on, and then of course, we have the bulette minis.

Oh yes, this has sceanrio written all over it.

Raid on the herds by natives, both to deny them to the Earhters and to capture some for their own use.

Starving natives attack, seeking food.

Skirmish between European forces, bent on controlling the region for agriculutral and military reasons. Killing the livestock costs VP.

So, I resurrect yet another of my ancient threads with more Norwegian models.  I increased their troop capabilities with yet more Sleipnir class Steam transports.

And in case of a need for heavy weaponry, we have the as-of-yet unnamed Sleipnir variation with a big gun...

And since no human would be crazy enough to be up there manning it, I created automatons to do so.

All based on Chimeras from EE, and the automatons are from the Mage Knight line, with some added features.  I am exceedingly pleased with a purchase I made on Ebay that gave me about 100 various golems and such from the game a while back.

Woo! It has been a while since I added anything here, but hey, here we are.

I picked up some of the Houston's guns Nordenfelts for my ships.

Well detailed, and certainly worth the price, which is very reasonable at 2-2.50 each for 3 barrel and 5 barrel.

I also completed the second of my Scout Aeronefs, the Tanngnjostr, with its oversized one-shot cannon, and side Nordenfelts.

And some Redoubt sailors to man this and others...

Feels good to do some more Norwegians after a long break.

I just can't believe I let that slide, but not finding an appropriate response in ALL my posts.

He is a converted Inquisitor from GW.  I disliked the weapons, so he got an open hand and a double barrel shotgun.  He flies the KVN Viking, searching for interesting archaeological sites, mines, veins of metals, Liftwood stands, and such.

Apparently, he is from the West Wind GHM0006, "The Doctor and Reporter".  The Steam Kavaleri are Brigade Models WW1 Belgian cavalry riders mounted on Warmachine Grundback Blasters and Gunners.  I had the idea for them some time back, but never finished them until recently.

Tada! New stuff!

I finally actually bought and painted the Hinterland sailors I originally was going to buy when I purchased the Redoubt Astro-Hungarians.

I needed more sailors for a game at Enfilade in May, and realized I had never gone through with my original purchase, so I remedied that and painted these up to match the redoubt sailors.  I love Jason's ideas.

And more!

The last of the sailors...

Some mechanics to help with all those 'Nefs...

And an experiment...

So, I originally chose the WW1 Belgians as the closest uniform I could find to a historically accurate Norwegian uniform of 1880 to 1900, and they did actually use shakos still, though they were shifting to pickelhaubes and kepis by 1885. However, I am not the richest of men, and I wanted to expand my forces, so I started looking at what I already owned, and some time back I traded one of my converted priate ships for about 80 RAFM Space: 1889 british, but found the idea of painting british very blase'.  So, this happened...

I think, as a 'equatorial' uniform, this may be something I can do to freely add a significant number of models to my Norwegian army, and it doesn't look half bad.  Opinions?

They're blonde Nordics! You can never see the eyebrows anyway!  lol

Hiatus for most of a year, and I'm still at 'Wow. Just Wow.'

Wild about the lasses, and think your 'get by' Brit expansion is brill, but those mechanics take the cake for me.

I'm not going to have to wait another 7-10 months for further goodness, am I?  lol

After all, thems that can, do, thems that can't, whine until you show them something else shiny.  ;)

These are all I have, though.  I was too busy trying to run to take a lot of photos.  We had Norwegians against Martians and British, and the Norsk took the day.  Too many guns compared to the others, and I actually actively reduced the amount of firepower compared to what I put on them originally. Gene felt they were too powerful - and he may not be wrong.  Everyone at the table laughed when I told the Norwegian players to play like they were pre-civil war Texans with Aeronefs when they were trying to decide how aggressive to be.  It is, in my opinion, an apt comparison to how I view their place on Mars.

That nef scenario at Enfilade was about grabbing a band of civilians, right? I was wondering how your little gyrocopters off the big carrier nef performed during the battle.

Great building! Wish I'd seen it first. I'm looking for buildings like that for pirate scenarios. Would that building happen to be cast by one of the vendors that sells at Enfilade?

By all that's holy! Has it really been almost a year since I updated?

Today's prizes are some 'Highland Martians'.  They are actually Oni no Sanru from the old Clan War miniatures game, but I painted them a lighter green to set them apart, and use them as a Green equivalent to the Space:1889 High Martians, that had rudimentary flight.

The bases have magnets in them, so that I can use them at the same 'level' as my Aeronefs, and give them the appearance of flight in game.

And the leader of the Green Nation, some guy I haven't named yet!

Heh, I never thought of wing tattoos.  Cool idea.

Also new to the Norwegian forces, Kaptin Hedda Gabler, head of the 'Privateer' division of the Norsk aeroforces.

She is a conversion of a Warmachine Cryx character - Skarr, I think - that I replaced her horns with a press molded shako, and replaced the stupidly large sword with a more elegant 'feminine' weapon.

A new Red Martian raises his head here...

And I like to track down real names from the time period to use, and act as though the person "went Free" when Norway left for the Red Planet.  This one seemed appropriate.

Agreed!

Truly GREAT game of Martian Alley tonight Neil! Wonderful scenario. Even though it broke my heart to see our beloved Princess of Helium flying away in the four arms of a winged green man, and not being able to do anything about it, that's a great set up for a rescue scenario to follow!

By the way, in the Pulp Alley forums rules section there is a thread from June 2013 in which Dave Phipps says that a character can run and shoot in the same activation, with a -1d penalty.

Awesome figures and ships, man, a total pleasure to play with!

Why you gotta be like that, man?  Always the lawyer!  Oh, wait....   ;)

Yeah, I found that last night when I got home.  What, 4 (maybe 5?) years I have been playing, and I always thought running ended your activation...

Your game went well on Sunday too - just a bit too many people.

For the rest of you, an AAR will be coming soon to a thread near you!

Resurrection!  So, I have been working on fantasy, WW2 and post-apoc, but I did come back to my VSF love as well.  I am putting on a follow up game to the one I did last year at the upcoming Enfilade convention, and have been working on some added figures.  To go with the nasty-bad flying Martians, I did some shading over some Monsterpocalypse figures.

The game is going to be Pulp Alley, so the two big guys will be sidekicks, and the little buggers are going to operate as a gang.  The first big rodan looking beast is just washed over the original paint job, and the second was one of their clear plastics with a new paint scheme.

As female associates to the green flyers, I found some Harpy figures, and added another pair of arms...

And I have a new mountain top for them to live on.  I plan on putting polyfill around the base to use as "clouds".

Made from a Galactic Heroes toy, I think.

And, of course, and other Aeronef - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=99849.0

It's just the West Coast - we do have airplanes here, you know.  It isn't just horses and stagecoaches.   ;D  Come on up!

Yeah, that's what I said when I suggested a meeting 'twixt thee, Froggy the Great, and me. Look on the map; KC's about mid-point between us all.   :D

Ah, well, someday...

Oh, wait, I have to actually finish a project first, don't I.  ::)
