Title: City scape updated 24/05/13
Post by: ilikepaintinglead on February 28, 2013, 11:24:59 PM
This all started after Ramshackle games kickstarter caught my attention which led to an evening pursuing Curtis's awesome terrain and vehicles and eventually led to me backing the whole rules package and I will probably be putting through an order when I get paid. I thought I'd get an early star on some vehicle construction for the upcoming post apocalypse.

The current vehicle is based on the chassis of a 0.99p shop car and tractor, a ton of plasticard, printer parts and pretty much all of my super glue :-)

So far I've only added the base coat of silver and various browns:

I intend to add some chipped color over the rusty base and add some verdigris and even more weathering to jazz it up and make it less brown.

Here's a couple of shots so you can get an idea of the size, (my mini's are on 30mm bases)

The turret on the back is made from plastic card and watch parts and has a magnetic washer on the base so it can be removed. The magnet I used was salvaged from an old pair of headphones and is built into the roof of the truck so hopefully I can build different attachments in the future.

One amazing thing that I discovered was that the bearing in an old PC fan with the blades removed was a perfect fit for the underside of the turret so it can be fully rotatable:

Here's a few more shots of the truck:

Absolutely brilliant -- a mobile fortress! That should put the wind up other scavengers.

Brilliant stuff! I may have to pinch the idea to construct some vehicles for my rusty robots project!

All the best!

@ spacecowsmith: Thanks very much get yourself down the poundshop/dollar store for some cheap toy cars, I'm going to buy up a couple more tractors at the weekend.

@ krieghund: thank you :)

@ Scurv: Viva indeed! Yes I'm going to press gang the second team into service on the Killdozer

Hey thats awesome! I really like the feel of it. Is it a ride or a shelter? It looks lived in!  I like it. I would maybe add some orange runs of rust, and a bit of silver around the doors?

Thanks very much, I think it's both technically it's an armoured mobile home :-)

The paint job at the moment is only technically the undercoat, I'm going to try and jazz it up over the weekend and make it a little more colourful.

Nearly finishing painting up this beast:

It still needs a little more work on the details and the tires need messing up but otherwise it's mostly finished.
As I was paid at the weekend I blitzed the town for some supplies for the next round of vehicles and came back with all of this:

The Humvee looking vehicle and the tractor were both from the poundshop along with both rolls of the silver wire (2 rolls for £1).
Another discovery that I made in my local Wilco's is picture hanging wire (the small brass loops next to the tractor) looks almost perfect for 28mm rope, it's made of multiple really thin pieces of wire already pre-coiled into an almost perfect rope effect, I love little discoveries like this.
Also over the weekend I popped into Pets at Home to nab some aquarium plants to carpet my post apocalypse.

I'm trying avoid green for any foliage as I imagine my post apocalypse to be set on a nuclear wintered planet covered in chemical deserts and ash wastes and any plant life has evolved or changed to extract chemicals from the soil or air hence the crazy colours.
Also that means that any objective markers or mission's can be based on capturing green oasis's or lone green plants etc, also the brightly coloured plants should contrast really well against a grey terrain board covered in rusting detritus. I'm debating whether or not to add some 'land coral' like this sort of stuff, mutated giant coral that's moved inland as much of the seas have dried up.

I've already separated and based up a couple of plants on washers, they still need their bases finishing:

That's my progress for the weekend let me know what you think.

Cheers everyone! I knocked up a post apocalypse display board to show off any future mini's or vehicles I throw together.

It's a £1 canvas frame from Poundland that I covered in Wilco's Flexible brown wood filer:
http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/fillers+sealants/wilko-wood-filler-flexible-ready-mix-brown-330g/invt/0158725 (http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/fillers+sealants/wilko-wood-filler-flexible-ready-mix-brown-330g/invt/0158725)
I'm sure there's a cheaper solution but it's just what I had to hand. I find using flexible fillers works better on terrain pieces as you get less chipping and with it being brown hopefully any damage over time won't be as noticeable.
When the filler was still wet to add texture I pressed in some small stones and a few bits and pieces of scrap. Once dry it was base coated black highlighted grey and then slapped with various rusty/chemically colours and the 'chemical puddles' gloss varnished.

Hey all sorry for the gap in posting, here's what I've been up to recently.

Firstly I placed my first order with Pig Iron Productions:
http://www.pig-iron-productions.com
I went for some Kolony Ferals and Kolony Rebels to flesh out my post apoc
My order came in super fast time and I can highly recommend their customer service!

Also lastly for the painted stuff this week I have some rezolution Dravani Shamblers that I picked up on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rezolution-28mm-Sci-Fi-Blister-Packs-APAC-Dravani-/190780417047?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&var=&hash=item2c6b662417
I'm using these guys as a sort of Toxic zombie in my post apoc setting.

Also recently I grabbed one of these on ebay for my next post apoc vehicle/terrain:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bob-The-Builder-Rubble-Playset/dp/B008I20AT8/ref=sr_1_9?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1364394298&sr=1-9

I'm not 100% sure whether or not to have it as a static terrain piece and build a series of shanty shacks on the back or leave it mobile and add a series of gun towers to the back?

As you can probably see in the images above I also threw together a little bit of post apocalyptic terrain in the form a mini bunker made from a piece of packing foam:

Here's a few more arty shots of the new mini's and the bunker:

Very cool stuff! I always love your painting style and it fits these models very well. The truck is a great find, I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of it. Whatever it will be, it'll be good I bet! The scenery is lovely but the urple plants make it look very psychedelic. Not in a bad way though  lol

Awesome mini's. I love the post apocalyptic feel you're getting through the use of cheap 'found' materials!!  ;) Great work and awesome finds. For my 2p, I think you should turn the big truck into a shanty town like rivet city or megaton! I don't think post apocalypse could find the diesel to turn that motor over, hahaha.

Cheers everyone for the positive feedback!!!

More post apocalyptic bits and pieces for you this week. As it was payday recently I decided to have a mooch around town and see what the retail gods would offer up for my painting table. First up I popped into TK Maxx and grabbed this from the toy section for £4.99:

It looked roughly the right scale for 28mm figures so I gave it a shot, once painted up should work really well as a terrain piece. Here are a few shots of the pieces and the with some mini's so you can see for yourself:

I also popped into Model Zone for quick look around and came out with a couple of airfix kits that were on sale, £1.99 for this little WWI tank
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m86/headnhalf/P1280642_zps4b96b0c1.jpg)

and £15.00 for this beast of a kit:

I think the Russian BMP should be easily apocalytic-iffied, it is a little on the large size (1:35 scale) but looking at the seating on the sprues they look about right for a 28mm arse.

As I've not put together any airfix kits for about 15 years I started with the WWI male tank and with a little tweaking ended up with a mini one man post apocalyptic flame tank. Most of the additions are Ramshackle games resin parts and with a little extra plasticard.

That looks very good, especially considering the scale difference. I may need to get me one of those. I was in Modelzone on Saturday and picked up some other 1/72 stuff, but I missed that one.

Cheers, I wasn't sure about the WWI tank, I was sure it was going to be tiny and unworkable but for £1.99 it was worth the risk.

Long time no updates  :)

Recently I had the pleasure of hosting my fellow blogger and actual real life friend Phil of Monsters and Machines blog fame (http://monstersandmachines.blogspot.co.uk/) for a game of SOBAH - Fear and Faith (Battle report up on his blog). The weeks leading up to Phil's visit were spent frantically trying to put together some kind of tabletop and pulling together all the random bits of terrain I have secreted in various boxes.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3669/8764775331_f1c453f943_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96058744@N08/8764775331/)

It wasn't quite finished in time for the game in that the two buildings in the top right of the pic along with the two white buildings aren't fully painted and weathered.
I won't post up the full battle report as you can pop over to Phil's blog for the full report, I'll just post up some pics he took during the game and try and breakdown the separate elements that made up the board. To start with the gaming table is made from two large framed canvases bought from Hobbycraft when they had a buy one get one free offer going. Both canvases were undecoated in black craft paint and then 'highlighted' using a sponge with various shades of grey and brown paint. The roads and warehouse carpark were a quick fix made from self adhesive floor-tiles chopped up into road sections, in future I'd like to make something a little more 3D but in a pinch they work pretty well.

Shot of the small waste ground behind the warehouse. The fences are home made from cocktails sticks and wire mesh. The caravan came from Wilkinsons as part of this set:

The junk is a mix of Black Cat bases and Pardulon resin items:

Interior of the Warehouse (http://www.sarissa-precision.co.uk/store/cityblock28/)
I'll put together a proper review of the warehouse a t a latter date with a list of the modifications I made/
The pallets came from ebay:

The cardboard boxes on the left of the shot are small wooden cubes (again from ebay) that I added to with a black pen and a little brown wash.

I'm really happy how this all turned out all the small elements really came together and much fun was had.
If there's anything that catches your eye in the pics above drop me a message and I'll let you know where you can get it or how you can make it. After madly rushing to get all this sorted out in the build up to the game I've kind of burned out on the post apoc / zombie side of things so have dove back into the pile of fantasy mini's.
With making progress and actually painting some mini's in mind I've decided to bulk base and undercoat everything that is currently in my draws that way I can dip into the draws and anything I pull out should technically be ready to go. I'm also aiming to go cold turkey on the ebay and purchase front so I can actually catch up.

Wonderful looking board!

Edit: woops, never mind! I found the size and material further down the ebay site.

Really inspiring. It's why I'm taking so much time preparing my boards, scenery an minis these last months, to have the same joy you have playing with yours !

Congrats  ;)
